  • Just How Scary GOOD Was Allan Donald, Actually? | Most Aggressive Bowler.
Allan Donald also known as White Lightening is one of the best fast bowlers in the history of cricket. His formidable skill and intensity were such that even the sturdiest of willows quivered at the sight of him. He was the first South African player to take 300 wickets and has claimed 272 ODI wickets. But exactly how good was he? Let's find out.

Surely one of the greatest fast bowlers in test and one day cricket history. Had the pleasure of watching him in a test match at Adelaide Oval in the 90's. His bowling approach and action had the balance, coordination and silkiness of an elite track and field athlete combined with the aggression and fire power of a prize fighter.

I remember that Donald v Atherton battle so clearly. My brother shouted to me from downstairs "Get down here now, Donald is actually trying to kill Atherton!" He wasn't far wrong and there's a section of Atherton's autobiography about it. After some time, he and Donald made their peace with each other that evening and I believe Atherton autographed the incriminating glove - complete with ball mark across it - and gave it to Donald. Years after, I still watch recordings of that spell and it is truly terrifying.

That's the quickest I've ever seen him bowl. He had to have been high 150s. It was actually too quick for the opposition. That period around 89-91 he was at his absolute fastest. When he got into the SA international scene he had to sacrifice a bit of pace for control as he was the lone strike man as well a expected to bowl long spells.
