- Just How Scary GOOD Was Allan Donald, Actually? | Most Aggressive Bowler.
Allan Donald also known as White Lightening is one of the best fast bowlers in the history of cricket. His formidable skill and intensity were such that even the sturdiest of willows quivered at the sight of him. He was the first South African player to take 300 wickets and has claimed 272 ODI wickets. But exactly how good was he? Let's find out.

Hey Cricket Lovers🏏, who do you think had more impact on South African Cricket, Allan Donald or Shaun Pollock?
Shaun Pollock
DONALD- Pollock could bat but he was painfully slow towards end of career, his average as a result flaterred by the fact that no runs scored of him, but also no wickets
Bro ... 90s were great indeed ... But 80s were no less .
WI fav 4 , lillee Tommo , imran , Wasim ,
I think Pollock was the better all round bowler overall though who would I pay to watch? Donald every time and twice on Sundays.
Not Graeme Smith, Jackques Kallis or Hanse Cronje.
Knocking Sachin’s middle stump with the ball moving inside…..unforgettable….my favourite bowler….we used to mimic his action as a child
He is one of the greats
Yes these 90's cricketers were really gr8
After getting hit for 3 consecutive boundaries Donald bowled Sachin with him in perfect forward defence. That's just etched in memory...
True
@@Hindusanatan192 Aisa koi batsman nahi hai jo un bowlers k khilaf struggle na karta ho. As far as pull and hooks are concerned he stopped it due to various injuries
Surely one of the greatest fast bowlers in test and one day cricket history. Had the pleasure of watching him in a test match at Adelaide Oval in the 90's. His bowling approach and action had the balance, coordination and silkiness of an elite track and field athlete combined with the aggression and fire power of a prize fighter.
One of the best!
1990s cricket was incomplete without the running battles that Alan Donald had with Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, and the Waugh Brothers. Quite unlucky that his team usually ended second best against the Aussies in the big matches of the decade.
Yeah!
@@indrajeetyadav6591 it is very much strange for why waqar Younus and Allan Donald are not listed in Fastest bowlers category?
@@SilentPatriotic Maybe Shoaib Akhtar and Brett Lee overshadowed them.
@@SilentPatriotic Even though it's not easy, many bowlers have bowled 150 and not really recognised for it.
My favourite fast bowling technique ever. What people don't realise about Donald is that we only saw Donald after South Africa was reinstated into international cricket. His career should've been longer and he would've then far more wickets had he played earlier.
Exactly 💯
Which people don’t realise? Every genuine cricket fan knows exactly how much we missed during SA’s exile. And Allan’s earliest years were just a tiny portion of that.
Even as an Indian cricket fan loved that delivery to Sachin.
Imagine if he played longer ...him and Dale Steyn in tandem would be nightmare for the opponents 😂
🔥🔥
I was at Eden Gardens in '91. We thought the first ball was a dud and didn't leave Donald's hand....then we saw the keeper pass the ball to the slips...Shastri had no chance...he was bowled by the 3rd ball😂😂
🔥😍
🇿🇦As a South African I love this👍🏾💯
South Africans have produced one of the best cricketers. love from India 🇮🇳
@@shatadrupaul3870 🇿🇦So too India 🇮🇳
Thank you so much!
90s South Africa was different, there was not a player who wasn’t a legend in that team , with the likes of Cronje , Boucher , Pollock, Kallis, Rhodes , Klusner, Symcox , Cullinan, Fannie , Kirsten , McMillan, Donald , still my most fav days of cricket ❤
@@endlessthespokesperson6876 even our 2nd World cup campaign was led by a fellow south African ❤️
Allan comfortably belongs in the list of the greatest fast bowlers. I wish we could’ve seen more of him in Australia.
True!
@longjohn5322 your batsmen won't feel the same he was their nightmare
90s was the era of best fast bowlers. The likes of Donald, Akram, Waqar, Ambrose, McGrath, Shoaib, etc were just unmatchable and if I may dare to say we won’t be seeing such quality of fast bowling again.
🔥🔥
Shoaib not in that list 😀..
Why?@@shansenani
@@justamazing9219Because his achievements don’t come close to the others.
@longjohn5322 okay give us some stats and proof
My son and I received the SA Cricket Team at the Air Force Stn, Gwalior on 11 Nov 91 on their first visit to India. Everyone on their plane said only one thing: Pray for us. In the match, the wicket-keeper would stand at the 30m marker for Donald. In comparison, Snell seemed like a trundler.
I remember that Donald v Atherton battle so clearly. My brother shouted to me from downstairs "Get down here now, Donald is actually trying to kill Atherton!" He wasn't far wrong and there's a section of Atherton's autobiography about it. After some time, he and Donald made their peace with each other that evening and I believe Atherton autographed the incriminating glove - complete with ball mark across it - and gave it to Donald. Years after, I still watch recordings of that spell and it is truly terrifying.
True, One of the most terrifying spell!
Some 30+ years later I have fond memories of going to watch Australia v South Africa in a ODI. To this day I have never forgotten Alan Donald, the white ball looked like a blur coming out of his hand. The sound of the ball hitting the bat, or the batsmen could be heard through out the packed SCG. He was enjoyable to watch !!
🔥🔥
I imitated his bowling action as a kid, and got a lot of compliments from coaches through my schooling career. It was his intensity that set him apart, even when off form, you still felt like something could happen with every delivery
Exactly
There have been plenty of quicks who are scary to watch when you are live at the ground, Alan Donald was one of a handful who scare me through the TV. Intensity was always turned upto 10.
🔥
Only if he ran that run on the last ball agianst Australia in '99 world cup things would have been so much different. Unfrotunately whenever I hear his name that final delivery comes before my eyes.
I really don't blame him for that
All Time Favourite❤.. One of the Very Best... with Ambrose- walsh , Mcggrath and Akram younis brothers
One of the best
the way Donald bowled Tendulkar out..was both lethal and spectacular at the same time
Exactly
Possibly the most imitated fast bowling action in the world.
Yup, no doubt
Very competitive and lethal...Even Dale steyn was not as impactful as him. Always bowled for wickets
One of the best fast bowlers during that period. He had good pace line and length. Players like lara sachin and ponting struggled against him. His bowling action was different and so batsman found it difficult to understand his bowling.
Nice little documentary! Wow, what pace! Thanks for uploading this, awesome work!
Thanks man🔥. It means a lot!
Following you since last year , but never saw you so dissapointed. Can't see you like this, stay strong brother 💖🇮🇳.
Thanks for your concern man😃🏏
Many people concur that Donald was the fastest bowler in the nineties.
Yesss
I'm South African but nevertheless the most underrated fast bowler - his stats speak for themselves- 4.5 wickets per test match and jimmy andedson less than 4 - his average of 22.25 also excellent- 73 matches and 332 wickets if i remember correctly
He is not Underrated
@@oscar5584 partially agree- but he is never mentioned in the same league as Ambrose, McGrath, Akram etc.- definitely underrated by Shane Warne if you look at his 100 greatest test cricketers and the bowlers such as merv Hughes ranked above him- but then again waqar younis is also underrated by Shane Warne
@@francoisvanwyk8361 you could say forgotten but definitely not underrated, even Ambrose is forgotten. I started my cricketing journey as a leggie watching warne during the early 90s but it’s due to Alan Donald I started bowling pace copying his action and almost perfecting it. Sportstar covered him in numerous editions and released his fantastic posters in the middle page during that time. I use to tear Alan Donald pics from my school library 😂 white lightening is a legend
@@oscar5584👍🏻 fair comment- the reason I made the statement is that I have never seen him picked by anyone in World XI -except by Darren Gough I think- McGrath, Akram, Ambrose have been included by many- so in my opinion he is not regarded as good as they are, same goes for Waqar and Shane Bond- I'm S.African but I also loved Allan like you- beautiful bowling action
Man, that's such a well made video..make a video on Darren Gough as well.
Thank you so much! Sure will make one on him too.
My hero when I was young.. His rythem is just so smooth
Exactly
Amazing info. I'm South African and grew up with Donald playing on the TV hehe😂. Thanks for the video
Hey man, I just wanna say well done on the video. Very well thought out and presented with really good information. Loved it, thanks!
Thank you so much🔥.
By showing that level of play, they did not get that level of salary in South Africa. Like west Indies and Pakistan.
Before Shoaib Akhtar Donald was the fastest bowler of world cricket.
Yeah
He was one of the greatest and the most fearsome bowlers who could turn the match around. Steve Waugh in one of his articles had stated that he was the only player Hansie Cronje would rely on during anxious, nail-biting moments.
He in my opinion the best bowling action, basically perfect
Agreed
He terrorized Tendulkar, Lara,Waugh brothers in their prime .
yes!
thanks for this video, it was well made . From Australia
Thanks a lot😃
Aggressive bowler... Funny runner.. I never forgot that semi final...
Thanx for the video dude ❤
My pleasure, please suggest other videos you want to watch😊
Allan Donald was furious bowler in the world.
Yesss
As a Safrican, I consider Donald one of the greats. However I watched Atherton and Russel batting at the Wanderers to save the test for England! It shows Atherton's skill, courage and determination. I think he carried his bat in that innings and was at the crease for hours, to end with a score of 180 odd n/o! One great bowler against one great batter! Modern gladiators!
yeah
Our former Coach 🇧🇩
Thank you Sir 🤍
Every 90s kid's favourite bowler!
His running & his bowling was full of energy..
Exactly
When South africa joined the international cricket in 1992 Donald was in mid 20''s. If he was teenager he would be considered greater than Akram and Macgrath . He did not need assistance from the pitch to trouble batsman , he was very lethal with line length and pace ! Donald was a white lighnening every ball he bowled with his beautiful Rythm looked like the kiss of death for batsmen !
EXACTLY!
Donald and Steyn when they were both good would have been scary !
Yeah, just imagine if they had played together🔥
It was a long time ago and i was still in high school but I still remember that spell he bowled to the Mike Gatting Rebel team in 1989 in the Joburg unofficial test. That's the quickest I've ever seen him bowl. He had to have been high 150s. It was actually too quick for the opposition. That period around 89-91 he was at his absolute fastest. When he got into the SA international scene he had to sacrifice a bit of pace for control as he was the lone strike man as well a expected to bowl long spells.
Yess, he was on of the best
i think the best body line bowler i have ever seen another in recent years is mitchel johnson
My first sporting hero!
🔥🔥
Absolutely worthy!👍
My one of the favourite bowling action is of Sir Allen Donald
Great legend white lightning Allan Donald odi Economy4.1 at genuine fast bowling is best of best, medium fast can hav dis r bit under Economy but real fast bowler will always concieve more runs in da era Donald played, dats Economy adding his wickets is unheard of he had found dat goldielock genuine pace while not compromising Economy,True Modern day Marvel of Vry Great Allan Donald

a legend alright. Some of those balls were really brutal.
Yess, a LEGEND
Lovely video. For the sake of historical accuracy, perhaps show the flag of the nation as it was during the relevant time.
Glad you liked it!
I used to like him as a 9 year old 😊
Please make a video on Michel Holding,Andy Roberts, Brett Lee & Chaminda Vaas

I always thought Alan Donald, would have a big breakfast 🍳🥞 whilst getting angry eating it, before GameDay.😅
😂
Allan Donald is one of my all time favorite, but if you're saying that he chose Cricket over Football or Rugby then probably he was not good at either of them 😂.
He was fierce as hell...... Though he is a real gentleman off the field
Yeah
most satisfying bowling action.. I used to copy him a lot in my teen years
My most favourite bowler!! my inspiration
🔥
😮😢😊❤ DONAALD SIR I MISS YOU
I wish I could bowl with his aggression with genuine pace it is what makes the game more enjoyable too watch maybe not play. If I'm talking about pace it's sadding for me for reasons.

90s decade bowlers , batsmen will surely think twice to attack them . Batsmen will sweat a lot without rest while playing against them for sure . Bowling lost its picture completely now .
Yeah ,cricket has become batsman friendly

White lightning....
Grew up mimicking Donald, we used to smear ourselves with white things on our faces, grew up in South Africa when Donald was big in the 90s pity he was crucified for what happened in 1999 Semis against Australia in that final ball, our best fast bowler until Steyn
He is a legend🔥
We all had copied his action atleast once
The most dangerous bowler of all time,"BROCK LESNAR OF CRICKET"😂😂
