Thanks for this tribute! Not many people know that Jonty had to fix his batting technique to get rid of his hockey tendencies. Once it was fixed, he averaged 50 in Tests before concentrating on ODIs.
I have watched jonty's fielding with great enjoyment, I named my cat jonty because of his Aarial abilities. I'm From England, a great English tennis fan but I think jonti, for me, was the best.and he was always smiling he really loved the game. From a 73yr old female fan called gerry 😊 Saw this 2024 December.
What a team that was where Jonty Rhodes had fielded with his exceptional ability beyond Cricket play imagination and Late South African Skipper Hansie Cronje with his flair to hit the balls for super sixes & I feel fortunate to view all those exceptional matches.
The best fielder! His fielding was like a batsman getting a hundred or a bowler getting a 5fer! He changed the complexion of the games with genius fielding moves
When Jonty was in the field - you could see the batsmen fearing to take the normally "safe" single. He was phenomenal - taking down brilliant batsmen that was on track to score huge numbers of runs when there was not a real chance for mere mortals to take the catch or runout.
That 90s SA team was something else. Kirsten, Gibbs, Kallis, Cronje, Boucher, Rhodes, Klusener, Pollock, Donald and De Villiers. They were good at tests and incredible at ODIs. Its sad that they didn't win any of the Word Cups in the 90s.
They came very close in 99 world cup. Klusener was the man of the series I think. I remember that tragic semifinal where klusener celebrated prematurely and the team lost. And in 2000 match fixing scandal hit Cronje among others
You my good sir, are a legend! Thanks for the memories and honouring Jonty! Literally the only cricketer renowned for his fielding though he was a great batsman too! I stopping bowling because of Jonty, spent more time on my fielding and bought his pants when his fashion line dropped 😎

@@outandaboutintheworl do Ponting or Jadeja have world record catches in a match? Do they have 100 catches in ODI... No!! So Jonty is the best undoubtedly and undeniably. Just give credit where it's due.

Thanks for bringing attention to Rhodes, I feel he is often forgotten as time has passed. In the 90s Rhodes' fielding was legendary. Square of the wicket I still don't think there has been any better since when it comes to saving runs and catching. I think Ponting was better at direct hit run outs and as an all-round fielder. None was better at saving runs at cover than Ponting.
A GREAT VIDEO with a great commentary track for one of the GREATEST LEGENDS of the game …..the only real magician to ever play the game….. All hail Jonty Rhodes …….🙏🙏🙏
First of the great fielders was Colin Bland of South Africa. Then there was Clive Lloyd of West Indies, both magnificent in the cover point and mid wicket regions hitting the stumps nearly every time. Then came this fella, Jonty Rhodes. He was like a fish out of water, taking catches horizontal from the ground and his hitting of the stumps running batsmen out was extraordinary. I do apologise I forgot to mention Derek Randall of England who was in the same mould as Lloyd & Rhodes, brilliant fielder.
Thank you so much for this video. Very well done. Jonty is no longer a man, he is a legend and one day he will fall into myth but his name will last forever.

Jonty was the best fieldsman iv'e ever seen. Ponting was a great run out man (as was Rhodes), but Rhodes took some of the best catches of all time. He was dynamic in the field & set a very high standard for world cricket.
I had the very good fortune to attend an ODI between India and South Africa at the Wandersers. Sitting high up in a stand at the golf course end, Alan Donald bowled so fast, I could hardly see the ball. In one of Alan's deliveries, the following happened. Alan Donald steaming in, delievers the ball, the batsman hits the ball and Jonty is on the ground having taken a spectacular catch. I recon this happened in less than half à second. I did not even see the ball. I did get to see Jonty play in several other games and he was a delight to see fielding at baçkward point. He saved many runs for SA with his fielding wizardry. Absolutely South Africa was kinda one of the top teams in terms of bowling and batting - but likely not in the top three or four... But Jonty Rhodes changed that with his fielding. Jonty revolutionised fielding.
Changed way of fielding in the ground. The catch shown before inzamam run out was super stunning, confidence he had in running out inzamam was phenomenal.
Jonty rhodes in an interview said that suresh raina is a very good fielder. He also said that diving in indian grounds is difficult back then coz of less grass cover.
I watched his first class debut season in 1988 when fellow university student club cricketers kept talking about his running between the wickets and freaky fielding. So we went to Kingsmead where Rhodes for Natal made a good score against Western Province ..later he fieldes and i was unlike anything I had ever seen.in terms of speed across the turf , anticipation and acrobatic catching. He built up a huge local following with fellow cricketer/rugby player Errol Stewart who was similarly athletic. Haven't see anyone since Jonty with the same explosiveness, agility, speed in that point /cover point area.
Jonty was an all-rounder without needing to bowl at all. On his poor days he used to save 5-10 runs plus holding onto all his catches. In his good days at least a game changing run-out, gobbling up half-chance catches and solid batting contributions.
a great fielder can indeed turn the tide of a game, just like a great batsman or bowler. Thanks again. Your passion for cricket really shows in your videos
Throw Andrew Symonds in the mix too, Symonds was a better out fielder than both Ponting or Rhodes and almost as good in fielder. Never seen any other player dive on his chest following a ball to the boundary, gather the ball and bounce back to his feet without using his hands. Had a much stronger arm than both Ponting and Rhodes too.
I captained Jonty when he was just a 16 year old and the talent was already there. He played his first game for us, (our 2nd team) in a Sunday league, as he played school cricket on Saturdays, and scored 170 something not out. Incredible cricketer and a superb young man.
