I'm 10 years late to the party, but thanks for making this video. Great explanation of how the evap system works. It was the first one I've seen that I truly understood. Well done!
Thanks for the video. Fixed my 2004 caddy escalade rear vent solenoid, with my son, at night, in freezing Temps, up in canada. Backed my caddy up on ramps, lowered the spare tire, and thanks to your video, gotter done.
I can only echo the comments below. This by far the best instructional video in the automotive repair catagory. And I am a HD mech so I often seek out video info help and I found this presentation very easy to understand. Thank you, Stephen Hunter
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing I have a GMC Sierra 2009 and today 04/2014 I just have the P0449 code on again. In 08/2010 They tested the pressure system and they found an internal short in the vent valve. They replaced the vent valve part 19207763 and reset SES light.
I just replaced this piece on my 2011 Denali. I completed the task in my driveway without ramps and jacks, very simple task where if done yourself could save you hundreds in labor fees. Also my Denali did not require me to use the wire harness but I had it on hand just in case. It took me about an hour and a half but as I stated the job was completed with very limited space to move around.........Great video thanks for posting. My vehicle had the same fault P0449, I am not sure what code it has now but the engine light is still on. I also replaced the fuel cap and I disconnected the battery terminals after both items were replaced. I am some what mechanically inclined but I don't have a scanner to pull the codes however I plan to order one from amazon. Crazy thing is I am told that I cant even turn the engine light off without such a specialized tool.
Yes. You need the scanner. The scanner will ask if you want to reset. This clears the code and should turn off your check engine light (unless you have another problem).
Just watched this video for the first time. The picture quality is excellent. My setting is on 360p. I liked how you spit the part down the middle to view. That's professional instruction.
Great video. Please make more. It's been a while since the last one. Keep them coming. I love how you preach investigative diagnostics. That's a really great thing and contributes to showing people that throwing parts at a problem is the wrong wrong wrong thing to do. Thank you.
your description of the system was very informative sir the easiest explanation on you tube thank you so much for your video :) you've been a great help
I like how you explain everything. You have to have a lot of patience to explain and demonstrate and show how it works. Great job on that. I wish you would be an instructor in college
Very good video, but for those of you who are saying hey I replaced this and I still have a code what could be the problem, you should always get a mechanic to look and test your issue, so you know what the problem is, once you start replacing parts without knowing for sure your just throwing money away in a sense, but I feel new parts can never hurt
Excellent ! Well explained and showed as true PRO of our Trade ! He uses the right tools to Test and verify the Operation of the component.!.You Should write a book one of my favorite You Tube Subcriptions !
One of the best videos I've ever watched. The man flat-out explains everything perfectly step by step other should take notes from him. I had the same code but I got lucky cuz it was my gas cap
Hey, thanks for taking the time to do the repair right. Wish you were working around here, too many jackleg outfits and I have to do everything myself (if I can). This is the first video I've seen that took the time to actually verify the code first.
Thank you for the info! I Have this code on my Chevy Blazer currently.. I've been trying to learn more and fix my own problems. Hopefully I can figure a little more out and maybe fix the problem now when I look. Helped me understand so much more..
Nice to have you back, Duane. I sometimes envy your deep diagnostic toolchest, with bidirectional control and the ability to compare to a known good device. That said, with what you've explained, fixing this would still be possible with more simple tools and techniques.
My P0449 and P0455 (vent solenoid and large leak) were due an open in the solenoid coil winding, so the solenoid could not close, so no vacuum would build. The vent valve in normally open, and is commanded to close by the ECU. The replacement unit had about 20 ohms resistance. I cut the end off the bottom of the bad solenoid, and the valve moved freely and sealed, it just had a bad open solenoid coil.
excellent video. long buy in depth brought me to the conclusion that my selinoid is ok. as it is clunking. so I need to move to. took my gas cap off today. for 2 days CEL has been on after displaying tighten gas cap on display. 04 chevy suburban 5.3l. awd
I had a stuck vent valve solenoid on my 04 Silverado. No need to buy a new one, just unseize the old one with compressed air or a wrench once u take it off.
I had that 499 code on a 06 Silverado. It wasn't hard to determine it was bad when its in th middle of January and you look up in there and see where that water had froze and put a split down th side of that solenoid switch. Kinda done away for th need for a lotta testing. LOL. But these videos put me on to what th problem was. Them evap systems can be a pain
Thanks for the video. Knowing GM I'm sure that part is from an offshore supplier who was the lowest bidder. I also see that fine vehicle is beginning to rust away from the salt already.
HEY DUANE AWESOME VIDEO!!!!! I JUST DID THIS ON A 2000 CHEVY IMPALA 3.8L....I HAD CODE P0440,,,,,THE CAR WOULDN'T ACCEPT GAS AND IT WOULD FALL ALL OVER THE FLOOR....TOOK THE VENT HOSE OFF AND GAS PUMPED WITH OUT A PROBLEM....I TESTED THE VENT SOLENOID AND THERE WAS NO CLICK....REPLACED IT AND PUMPS WITH NO PROBLEMS :)
Dissecting parts is good education for knowing how parts work, and if you're like me you dissect nearly everything that goes bad just to see how it works and how its made. When you know how things work you can diagnose problems more accurately. It appeared by looking at that solenoid, which looked like a typical continuous copper winding around a magnetic core, that you could have done a simple continuity test on the two leads with a DVM at the proper ohms scale to see if it was bad. No continuity, which would more than likely be at a high resistance on that winding, would mean it isn't any good because the circuit would then be open. A shorted circuit causing too low of resistance would then have to be compared to a known good solenoid to prevent a false diagnosis.
When installing the new ends onto the male end, you don't have to push on them to release them. You just push them on and the tapered end automatically expands the ends for you :D Hope that helps.
I HAVE A 2011 HHR WITH THE PO449,, CHANGED VENT VALVE STILL HAVE CODE,, BUT NOT PIG TAIL DONT KNOW IF THE PIG SHOULD BE CHANGE,, BUT IT PLUGGED IN.. ARE THE VALVES NORMALLY OPEN AND CAN BLOW THROUGH THEM UNTIL POWERED ON? TY FOR THE VIDEO..
very informative video,Thanks. Confusing at about 5:30 when you mention negative pressure. I assume you mean vacuum and mean vacuum bleeds off not pressure. I have removed 100s of these valves just to clean them out. Most of the foam filters are full of dust, some have as much as several spoons full of dust. Cleaning and blowing out the hoses usually fixes this code, and yes I have replaced a couple of the valves, and I am so disgusted that a car company would change the plug and you have to buy a pigtail worth more than the valve.
What if I've already replaced the purge and vent valves and p0449 is still there and I don't have a fancy diagnostic tool? What else would cause that code?
I had the same problem with my 2006 Silverado. Chevy has a TSB on this fault, but basically too much dust gets into the vent valve and it has to be replaced. Pick one up at autozone and save $100 over the dealer price.
Excellent, clear as a bell. But How do we test the power wire without the expensive scan tool? I guess we can test the solenoid with a battery connection...
Duane, Thanks for your video, Nice to see ur video after long time. Learned a lot from you .. have one q, U said Vapour are stored in charcoal canister, agreed, and vaccum suck the vapour from canister, agreed. why do we need vent solenoid, why it is normally open, in other words if it is open, will it the vapour escape from vent soloenoid. can u pls explain
Hi, I have a big question. I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado reg. cab. Had a evap code P0049. When I tried to exchange, noticed that the vapor canister line that goes to the Vent Valve Solenoid was clogged, so I removed the clogged line, and put a new line to the new vent Solenoid, connect the item and turn on the truck, in a few minutes, the vent solenoid start leaking gas. I don't know what is the issue, I thought was the fuel pump because the gauge always said is full. so I change the fuel pump and same issue, leaking and gauge said full. so I don't know what to do next. please advise.
Awesome video! Thank you Im getting the P0449 on my 08 gmc sierra, but also a P0455(gross leak) Could that be because the solenoid stays open and shows a leak? Or would it be 2 separate issues?
l have a 2007 Chevy Silverado that won't start sometimes, but only when it's humid or raining. It sounds like it wants to, but doesn't. P0449 is the only code that comes up on the scanner. The pressure is good, new spark plugs and wires, new coils, new PCM (couldn't get any codes with the old one). Is not starting sometimes one of the symptoms of this code? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
I changed the spark plugs in my 2007 GMC Acadia and now its randomly misfiring. I changed the coil packs that was misfiring and that p0300 code went off. Its still running rough and idling only when im parked or stopped at a light. If I change this canister will that make run normal again?
I wish I had seen this video before a shop told me that the code was because of an EGR valve....that didn't resolve the problem. It would have saved me $400
I'm 10 years late to the party, but thanks for making this video. Great explanation of how the evap system works. It was the first one I've seen that I truly understood. Well done!
Best how to and info video I've even seen. Really appreciate the elaborate details, visuals, and explanations.
Thanks for the video. Fixed my 2004 caddy escalade rear vent solenoid, with my son, at night, in freezing Temps, up in canada. Backed my caddy up on ramps, lowered the spare tire, and thanks to your video, gotter done.
Just repaired my 2010 Suburban with AC-Delco part 214-2149 using the information you shared. Thank you very much.
I really like it when you cut the old one apart to see how it operated. Very Good Job. Buffalo, NY Dave
Best car video I've seen. Remarkable level of detail and explanation!
Best youtube video on the subject, hands down!
Love you old timer mechanics!
the experience and knowledge is priceless

I agree. Well done complete video including troubleshooting 101 basics.
Best video I've seen on this issue!! Excellent job and THANK YOU!!
Excellent overall diagnosis and explanation of how to thoroughly diagnose and repair the evaporative emissions system.
Thank you very much sir

thanks, that was very informative, especially the end when you showed how it supposed to work with the cut open one
One of the best mechanic videos i have ever seen... if not the very best.
Good job. Subscribing

3 1/2 minutes into this video and I just want to say a HUGE thank you.

I like how you explain everything. You have to have a lot of patience to explain and demonstrate and show how it works. Great job on that. I wish you would be an instructor in college
This just happened to my 2008 Impala. The dealer also replaced the harness. They actually had 3 codes. PO455-00,PO454-00, and PO449.
as always, a great teaching lesson by the skillful teacher...
Awesome video Sir! Very informative and clear. Applied this to a 2003 Sierra 5.3
Thanks for the great tutorial. Now I can fix my customer's car properly tomorrow! BTW, I can hear the click on the new solenoid
Very good video, but for those of you who are saying hey I replaced this and I still have a code what could be the problem, you should always get a mechanic to look and test your issue, so you know what the problem is, once you start replacing parts without knowing for sure your just throwing money away in a sense, but I feel new parts can never hurt

Man! Excellent video! I love the end where you cut it open!
Awesome videos, thank you for your info on so many problems, very professional, thank you again
man that was very informative and very thorough you did a great job I appreciate your help keep up the good work
Thanks u. Your video helped me expand my knowledge as a technician
This is a GREAT video!!! Exactly the type of educational videos I enjoy!!! Ty and good job!
One of the best videos I've ever watched. The man flat-out explains everything perfectly step by step other should take notes from him. I had the same code but I got lucky cuz it was my gas cap
Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to comment
But how would a gas cap cause the p0449 code? It would usually be a different code like evap leak code.
Hey, thanks for taking the time to do the repair right. Wish you were working around here, too many jackleg outfits and I have to do everything myself (if I can). This is the first video I've seen that took the time to actually verify the code first.
Thank you for your time and efforts here. It was very helpful.
Really nice job explaining how to test and fix P0449 code.

Excellent explanation, valuable teaching!!!
Este es el mejor video bien explicado paso ah paso.
Thanks for that video..... Awesome and a lot of good information, I love it.
well done, thanks aigan.
Now thats a great video. Always wanted to know how that system works. You explained it to a tee. Great stuff thanks. Not that difficult after all.
I like these evap videos, these p0440 kind of codes are such a pain

Best illustration of this fix I have seen. Great video. Thanks
I have a po449 on my 08 sierra, thankyou for the indepth video.
Thank you so much for your video god bless you
Great video, very detailed explanation.
Excellent presentation....Thank you !

thanks again , will be looking at this through his coming weekend, thankfully its not a performance issue code

Thanks for adding your comments
Good to see you back.
Thank you very much indeed, very well explained.
Very detailed and helpful commentary on codePo4449. Thanks
those are the arms of bigfoot.thank you.good video
Great video! Figures that they don't include the jumper, thanks for the tip on that.

Yes. Pull the connector & apply power & ground to hear if it operates.
Great video , and very detailed making it very simple for anyone to do their own fix. Puton our 08 LTZ Suburban it works great, Thanks so much!!!!

the lines going to the canister fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and the other hoses etc...
a cracked one certainly
What if I've already replaced the purge and vent valves and p0449 is still there and I don't have a fancy diagnostic tool? What else would cause that code?
video was very informative, thanks for posting!
This was so perfect I’m subscribed thank you
Great video, thank you.

Do these solenoids work on 12 volts or 5 (or whatever) volts? Awesome video. Very well explained. Thanks.
Once again thank you VERY much
Excellent, clear as a bell. But How do we test the power wire without the expensive scan tool? I guess we can test the solenoid with a battery connection...
God bless you always
pretty cool explanation keep it up
You are the best!!!
Now. Charcoal in a aquarium has maxed out after a week.... I can't picture the charcoal canister absorbing fuel evaporates lasting any longer.

Could that be because the solenoid stays open and shows a leak? Or would it be 2 separate issues?
tighten your gas cap or buy a new gas cap
chevrolet malibu 2006 evap code p0449 is inside fender left. solenoide
Great video! Thanks again!
great video thank you..
Thanx. What if the canister solenoid is working properly and still get the P0449 code? Any suggestions or videos?
What's the part number for that little hardness adapter? I need it for my 2007 avalanche..
