EVAP Vent Solenoid Code - P0446
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- Let's have a look at this Chevrolet Cobalt that came with a code P0446 for the EVAP Vent Solenoid Performance. I have notice that most people will get sucked into the trap of changing parts based on code definition instead of code setting criteria. Let's have a look at this car and see how the code could send you down the wrong path if you don't look at the EVAP system as a whole to make a fast diagnosis.

Hi everyone!
I’m mechanic my self, working in this field for many years, 20 years
I definitely support this guy. He knows his shit very well.
Watch the way he explained things .He doesn’t just change parts, he actually troubleshoot the problem first and most importantly he explained everything in detail so well .
Good work buddy.
The fact that you're such a conscientious person that tells it straight is a great thing to see. I'll never get tired of that. Honesty is something that kind of slips by the wayside in some shops. Thanks for the video.
Just wanted to say thanks. Ive been chasing a p0446 code on a aveo for awhile. Swapped out both the vent and pressure solenoids and still had it. Went over every line and seal on that fuel system and couldn't find a leak. After watching your video i checked the data and it showed the car thought it had 16" of vacuum in the tank. Pulled the sensor and checked output voltage and sure enough it was stuck at 5 volts open air or pressured up. Cheapest part i have ever bought for that car. Thanks for the informative video.
i'm going through the exact same problem on my aveo right now. i've been chasing codes left and right trying to figure out exactly what the problem is, and p0446 has been there for a WHILE. finally caved and went to a mechanic after watching this video and what do you know, that's the problem. i'm waiting for the shipment and it was very easily one of the most cheap parts i've spent on this forsaken car. i thought it was just me with the aveo problems.
Excellent Job! Your understanding on how the system operates is what lots of mechanics lack. I use to work with at a Chevy dealership with about 10 mechanics and my observation was that only about 2 -3 out of them were were really good at diagnosing the less common problems that needed to be dug into further. Some were only good at R&R.
The most useful tool in your arsenal- can't be purchased, and will never fit in a box= *Experience.*
I thought you were gonna say oneself.
I don't know man, i can make people people fit in really small boxes, mob boss style! Ya know?!

Hey Eric, just had to come back to this video after a few weeks to thank you for making this. I've been very slowly attempting to fix my p0446 on my Chevy Malibu. I tried all the obvious -- the fuel cap, easy to reach sensors, etc.. As you know with the NYS inspections, gotta get that money light off by any means possible, so I gave up and brought it to a mechanic who ALSO couldn't figure it out...... And it ended up being the fuel tank pressure sensor. Thanks again for making an in depth video on this, I can finally stop getting parking tickets for having an expired inspection 🎉
What were the symptoms of your car? Would it shake and stall?
@@NIGHT-tj7ksgreat question. I’m perplexed. I replaced the vent solenoid on my 07 Colorado because it was cracked. That’s took away my check engine light for a while. Now it comes and goes but still persistent, p0446. Is it possible that the canister is clogged or still leaning towards tank pressure sensor
South Main you are such a great resource of auto troubleshooting info - thanks again. Now had a similar issue - different fix. Last couple of days we bought a used 06 COBALT. Lots of miles but good price. Test drive of the car showed no engine light, everything was OK, ran smooth and good. Next day the engine light came on, now I don't have the high end code reader you have that does all those tests, mine just shows the codes. First thing I had to do was figure why I had no power on the OBD port to my basic code reader. Like alot of vehicles this is powered by the 15 amp fuse for a cigarette lighter. Now even though this car didn't have a lighter, it still had a fuse for it and sure enough it was blown. I think it powered the AUX 12 volt plugin port as well ?? not sure - or at least the one on the dash. Any ways quick fix on that, new fuse and now the reader had power on the port. Codes came up as P0300 - misfire, P0446 the one we are talking about here, and P2101 throttle body position performance? Anyway I checked with RUclips and of course went to yours first, and OH MY, well I guess lets get started. First I started thinking? We also just filled the tank with gas yesterday and the 446 code is related to venting I wonder if the gas cap is bad, removed and it looked brand new, Cleared off abit of grime on the seat and rubber made sure it was back on tight. Went in and cleared the codes and they did not return - still fine today. Just wondering what may have cause the misfire code and the TB position code? no worries right now as they have not come back either.
Test no guess! Great video! I needed to change that sensor for my truck and it drives better and I can pass an emissions test in my state. Thanks again!
Thank you. I have been fighting a "service engine soon" on a 2005 buick lesabre.
That's a great point about looking at the fuel tank pressure solenoid first. Your commentary is spot on, it all made sense and the test was simple. Thanks again Eric.
Thanks Wyatt!
The Ford trucks we had used a similar system. Once I learned the relationship of the fuel tank pressure sensor, the vent valve, the purge valve and other components, it became easier to diagnose Evap problems. Then came the 2009 Dodge Avengers, with no shop, Internet, or documentation support. Luckily I only saw two of those!
Great Video!
oldie but goodie. bought a fl. 05 c1500 with the money light on and tighten gas cap message. and the classic po455 code. trying to figure where to start without a high dollar scan tool. your vids are helping. stand by.
The Gatling gun approach can be very hard on the customer's pocket. I can see now that tackling these issues without a basic understanding of the workings of the circuit in hand and the ability to select the proper tools for diagnosis will lead to unnecessary mutilation and replacement of functional parts.Great practical video for anyone with an itch to shoot first and ask questions later.
I have a very similar 2007 Cobalt (vs 2008). It has a P0446 code. I recently purchased it and it has had the code since then. I don't have a fancy scanner, but I'll keep checking what I can. I tried a new gas cap with no luck. I had noticed that while filling with gas it tends to shut off before it gets close to full. I pulled the charcoal canister off thinking it might be plugged, but I'm able to blow easily into any of the 3 ports. After blowing into each port, I cleaned the vent filter internal to the canister while I had it out, but it wasn't that dirty.
While I had the charcoal canister off I tried to blow into each of the three Lines that connect to the charcoal canister. The big Vent line is easy to blow into (just vents to atmosphere). I can't blow into the little Purge line, but that makes sense as the Purge Valve at the engine is N.C.
I then removed the gas cap and tried to blow into the large line that goes to the gas TANK, but it felt like I was blowing up a stiff balloon. It would build pressure and then blow back in my face. Look at 6:04 in the video. This large line also has a Tee fitting in it that connects to a 3/8" line that goes up the fill tube and connects into the fill tube just below the restricter plate/gas cap. Maybe the large line to the gas TANK has a rollover valve or something with some restriction, but the 3/8" line probably does not. Is there a reason I can't easily blow into this TANK line, or is this a sign of a problem (blockage, etc.)?
If there is a blockage this could explain the shutting off while filling, and perhaps the P0446 Code.
I'm thinking about doing my purge valve an doin the sensor in the canister these cars are really funny can you smell gas fumes after idling a bit in the car just curious??
When it costs $200 to have a mechanic properly diagnose which of the 5 $20 parts are the problem, I'll save at least $100 and just do some parts swapping.
A P0446 does not usually indicate a stuck open vent solenoid.Maybe stuck closed as 446 is excess vacuum. Pressure sensors ,plugged canisters etc. Here in Illinois in farm country lots of plugged canisters and solenoids from gravel/dirt roads
This helped out a ton! This was the only video I could find that actually had the same issue as my Cobalt SS. My code was actually P0455, but it indicated that my Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor was bad, which it was true. Thank you so much!
Great! I have a P0446 on 2006 Sierra. The evap vent coil resistance was open, changed that. P0446 returned after a few days, but the new coil is still good. Have to check the pressure sensor, or maybe the canister is plugged. I've wondered how much air is pulled thru it, as the outside air is poorly filtered and I live on a dusty road. Maybe the air flow is so slow the dust falls out and does not enter the fuel tank. Have to Find the failed part, and change that. Won't guess.
Nice diagnosis & fix! You're right about testing b/c sooner or later the percentages get you and in comes a car serving humble pie to bring us back to why we test first. DTCs diagnosis on a scan tool is an art in itself determining what it really means b/c the PCM is just reporting what it sees. PCMs are notorious for reporting crank sensor faults and in reality it is the cam sensor that is bad. Performance codes or calculation codes can be fun. I hope that wiring mess was not a garage b/c it should always leave the shop the same or better than it arrived. I ordered the AESwave kit after I seen you using it and I love it! Used it yesterday on a P2135 fault and found the spread terminal doing drag tests with the kit test leads. Sweet kit!
Yep, not understanding how the systems work and interact can cause a wild goose chase. See it all the time where someone went to Da Zone, and they tell them Code PXXXX means you replace part YYYY. Then the light pops back on and it's the same code....
It's like a P0300, "oh that means you need plugs or cap/rotor/wires" Maybe, but it could also be a bad fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, bad intake gasket, vacuum leak, exhaust leak above the O2 sensor and more. Knowing what that code is and how it is processed puts you ahead of a large percentage of folks.
***** CNY 28 miles from Cooperstown? Do you know where Johnstown is at? It's 35 miles from Cooperstown and I lived there until I joined the Air Force.
Hayward's Automotive Yep, was just there today! I'm very familiar with NY as I was a supervisor for the NYS Lottery for a while.
Eric, I'm starting to miss the opening tagline: "Welcome back to the SMA channel" ...
You ever was working around the canister before you made a mess ! Good work !
Test, don't guess! New SMA slogan!
wish it was everyone's motto!
Thomas EXOVCDS check cold start solenoid
DJM, i have the exact same problem with my 99 suburban..did you ever figure out what the issue was?
Thomas EXOVCDS Hi my name is Christian I hope you can get back to me. I'm at my wit's end with a p0446,p0442(small leak) I have the evap canister out of the car when I plug the vent line, vps, and open the bypass the canister will not achieve vacuum unless I plug the air vent port. This does not seem right to me is the diaphragm on the canister side broken? The vehicle is a 2004 Toyota Corolla. Any response would be greatly appreciated.
SWEET THANKS, even though Im having a P0401 code the "jargon" in this video will help me track down the prob. I've replaced the EGR Valve, reset the code and it popped the next day. My next move is to clean out that passage it connects to.
this video is a few months old I watched it when you first uploaded it and had a p0455 evap large leak detected code on a 06 cobalt Friday. and remembered watching the video looked at the ftp volts while doing purge and seal test it was stuck at 1.4 volts didn't change. didn't even hook up a smoke machine. thanks for the vids man
Hey someone who knows issue and understands operation good going man. Canister valve was open but you were able to close it huh . Okay got it kind of known it was what ya found . The springs in the vent solenoids must be crap. Mine is stuck open .
Eric - thanks for this video. THUMBS UP ! I found that I had the exact same failure on a 2007 Saturn Ion with code P0446. The vent valve still ok and the evaporative fuel pressure sensor was frozen at 4.90 V. The sensor was also warm to the touch - so i suspect that it had some sort of internal short going on inside.
So glad they stopped environmental inspections in my area ;) Fixed! lol
but Eric parts changing is so much fun, playing Swap-A-Roo. Getting it right the first time is such a buzz kill and it hurts the big box stores bottom line. haha Nice fix!
I think ScannerDanner did a similar video about EVAP systems. Also a very good one.
he is great.
You sound honest.
Eric, Hope you and your family had a great vacation! Glad to have you back.
Awesome diagnostic work 💪👊🤙
That ftp sensor looks just like the one Nissan uses. I have had a few of those go bad as well. It usually reads high on Nissan as well when they fail.
You end up with a evap leak DTC for some reason. But you get kicked out of the "system closed" leak test (using smoke machine) because the computer thinks the pressure is too high and aborts the test.
Yep the vacuum test will kick you out if the pressure drops to much
I had a 2006 Saturn Ion and salt ate through the wiring back there.
Nice OBDII scanner really accurate!! I have the same issue on my 2001 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2 LS V6 check engine P0446. They change the vapor canister, purge valve at the back and front engine. Plus 2 vacuum hoses in front of the engine and fuel pump. But still it keeps trigerring check engine P0446. The mechanics cannot figured it out!!! Please help
Could be faulty selinoid at the canister on some cars is it a cobalt
I'm having issues also damn gremlins
Your cap visor is in the way, when I was watching and learning from your video
I know!, he should have either removed it from his head or twirled the visor to the back of his head! 👌
Great video! Thanks for taking time to show. I wish there would be more people like you guys.
Thanks for explaining. Great vid! Thank you!
I have P0442, and I changed the purge valve and that didn't resolve the issue. Should I install the EVAP canister vent valve?
Good one Eric. Now as far as the electrical tape up under there. How do you address this with the customer? Do you show them the hack job? Do you just mention it as the client pays your bill? Do you offer to fix it as this could result in problems later (At a cost of course)? Or did you just fix it up real quick and say nothing? -John
Thank you for your knowledge! 04 pontiac grand prix gtp definitely saved me thank you please keep thon informational videos up
Thanks very help full
"test don`t guess" i love the quote .
Hey! So I'm in the market for a new scanner. How are you liking OTC Encore? It looks like an awesome scanner.
I'm sure you knew this Eric but in case others don't know yet. You can force a self test by warming up from a cold start with the AC and all the fans turned up to high for 3 minutes then drive a little. The self test will complete within the first block after that. This is on most GM's I believe. This will fix problems associated with battery disconnections which can prevent you from passing certain tests during a smog check. The advice to be driving around under 55 or 60 for a certain number of miles to get it to self test simply does not work. Most of the so called 'certified smog experts' simply do not know this fact because they are stupid and did not do their homework.
We don’t have ANY shops like this where I live
thanks man
from QATAR
Had a P0446 on my Saturn 2.2 the wiring harness was connected but hanging loose im pretty sure one of the wires within the harness was broken
nice one mr O.another no parts fix keep up the good work.
I’ve got an 02 Monte p0446 code evap system vent control circuit and since the time my check engine light came on my gas gauge is all over the place sometimes is this connected absolutely right?
Like the UH STICKER ON THE LIFT👍🏼
I had the same issue. I have a 00 lesabre and it threw a code for a evap fuel tank pressure sensor high circuit so I just replaced it.(p0446 or p0457 something like that).I now have an intermittent p0440 code which is a general evap leak code. I am assuming that the sensor was bad, but now the system can actually detect a leak lol. Not to sure what it is. Don’t have access to a fancy diagnostic tool. I’m assuming it’s a venting problem thought because when the leak is detected and the light comes on it is when my tank is at around a 1/4 tank. When I go to fill up the tank and take the gas cap off i can hear air being sucked into the tank. I also found out when I have the car in the on position and the fuel pump is primed and I am filling up with that code on it cause fumes ( and gas when I am pumping) to be pushed out of the gas filler.
Any ideas anyone?
Hows are ya, been watching your videos for a very long time. Like the vids and has helped a lot. I have the code P0466. I have changed the lines and also the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor and still have the code. I checked my gas cap and it seems to be working ok, gasket not damaged. I have noticed that the purge valve is making like a pulsing sound which can be heard inside the cabin with the radio off. I tested it and disconnected no air passes through, when connected it has vacuum; but the pulsating sound, I am not sure if it’s normal. I mean it could be but not sure if you should be hearing it inside your truck
As always an education. I was looking at picoscopes website, they have some good case studies, which were victims of swaptronics, which were free to read.
They have a great web site
Eric, great video as always. Am I mistaken or does that fuel tank pressure sensor look alot like map sensors that you would see on just about any 90's gm vehicle?
When changing wheelbearing, what to do if you push out everything but the outer bearing shell? Like its really fused in the hub.
If you mean the outer race, if you can't press it out and the bearing is bad, take a welder and run a bead of weld around the middle of the race, OR use a dremel type tool to cut a groove across the race. Both will cause the race to shrink enough that it will come out.
Take a hack saw blade or cut off wheel on grinder grind in it a bit an take a chisil an hammer give a good whack usually will crack an slide off after good luck she was bad been their
The tape on the pigtails was because these wires always get chewed on by mice. Very common with these cars
Great Video EricO! You are a great source of info my friend. Education is something no one steal from you. Thats what I preach to every new tech and older techs alike. Someone can steal your tools...and yes they are an important part of our job...but what you retain in the ol noggin is even more important !!
Man, i need you on my Silverado. Got a 0442 code and a 0455. Almost certain its the vent valve solenoid.
Another great video .Thank you
On my 2013 Chevy Malibu I have no codes but live data shows my evap system vapor pressure shows minus 112kpa.. what could be the issues guys..
Edit, what I did was clean the gas tank cover and put some silicone grease around the gasket and tank and seems to work..will see how long it will stay..
Hey Eric just worked on a 2006 with a broken belt tensioner and man o man was it horrible! Serpentine belt tool doesn't fit because of the motor mount and after you remove the mount there isn't enough travel to install the new belt. In the wheel well had the same problem, no room because of the CV Axle! Had to raise the engine up to get my ratchet in.
Yeah they seem to get tighter and tighter
Rent one from autozone and cut it in half. Needless to say, it's yours now, but works perfectly....
I'm curiouse now if this was faulty would this cause the engine light to come on an start flashing when i hit 4 to 5 thousand rpms and start acting like are limiter or starving for fuel?????
Thank you!!
Good job. This video helped me.
well at least i seen what the part looks like for -2 seconds, and saw the meter the entire video fml
What make and model is your scan tool what do you think of it looking to buy a really good one but cant figure out if I want otc or snap oh or bosch there not cheap so want your opinion
Hey Eric-o from New Zealand. Thanks for the great vids keep them coming...
2nd comment from New Zealand!
Badgertronix haha where you base?
North Canterbury somewhere
Third comment to Badgertronix in New Zealand from Canada . 🍺🍺
One thing I never see written anywhere about the Vent valve. Is it open or closed when car is off. I assume it is always open, and only closes for the Leak test. But it isn't directly stated anywhere that I can see, it is left as an assumption.
im think my code po446 is a bad purge valve,,stuck open but one person said pi446 can never be fixed with a new purge valve. he said to clean out with air pressure.? any suggestions?
P0446 is the only code coming up, could that by any chance cause the engine to shut off at random times but be able to start back up?
Good info, thank you.
i wish you were my tech in vancouver wea...great job
sweet pids on that scanner
I have 2010 Denali when I remove fuel cap that vehicle shut off its self quickly please suggest me about this problem thanks
looks like I replaced my evap purge control valve when really I should have replaced my fuel tank pressure sensor. A rat must have chewed some wires in my car because I keep getting evap purge control valve circuit open and I see rat droppings. I went on replacing parts like a dingle. I should test the voltage to the purge valve to see if its even getting anything that will tell me if a rat ate the wires going to that. Any ideas?
i have a 98 integra gsr and i have about 7 codes of dtc wichbis like evap codes and the only thing i notice is bad is the charcoal canister is sun cracked but when taking it to the inspection they tell me it cant communicate with the computer
Good info as always. Just that most of your testing equipment never seems to fit my backyard budget.... ;p
Tourq(android) + $9 bluetooth obdII scanner will get you a long way. Can't control thing but you can read most if not all data pids.
does not give access to fuel pressure sensor which is key for any evap work
On fords and gm vehicles i have tried it on does (install the plugin "Torque scan")
Here is a screen shot (i dont have obdII handy but you can see what it showe values avaliable on my ford)
postimg.org/image/4d4i6lmi5/
do you need a plug in? I need one for toyota, =/
I am currently diagnosing a P0446 on a 2002 GMC Sonoma. I also have a "healthy" 2003 GMC Sonoma of my own. I tested the vent valve on the 2002 and it works properly, open when off, closed when on. The purge valve also seems fine (no vacuum when closed). The pressure sensor on the 2002 reacts to testing (it's not "stuck") and shows near zero pressure when the cap is off. I suspected the canister was restricted so I compared some pressure values between the faulty vehicle and the "known good" one. With engine running, vent valve open, and purge valve at 100%; the tank vacuum on the problem truck goes down to 22"Hg but on the good truck it only goes down to 4.3"Hg. This seems to indicate a restriction of the vent path through the canister. Anyone else have this experience?
eric you gotta give the people what they want, wheres a toolbox tour!
I have a 2005 Saturn Ion. Does my car have that sensor ? I started changing small parts with no luck. The canister is about $400. will be the last part I try to change.
Is it possible for that code to be thrown from the vehical being washed underneath, it cqme on directly after and went away after drying out
simple awesome demonstration
I have a 2005 Cadillac Escalade with the 6.0 VORTEC in it and I get code p0446 evap vent valve circuit malfunction, I already replaced the vent valve solenoid under the truck and the purge valve on top of the intake and the code still comes back? Any ideas thanks and love your channel.
YOUR THE MAN...NICE
Will that solenoid being faulty cause pressure to build in the tank?i have to remove the gas cap the release pressure constantly?? also it makes like a burping type sound.any suggestions would be appreciated.
98 f150 4.6
Great video, cool test light. Can you give the product info for the test light?
Does a 05 lancer has a power power evap port so I can use a smog machine
Hi can you tell me name of the diagnostic scanner to test, thank you
Really dumb question, but I cant get the 90 quick connect off. The one with the green plastic in it. What's the trick? Please help
I have a 2001 chevy lumina , that code came up but also my car smells alot like gas in the back by where all that staff is any suggestions on where I should start ??
How common are Cobalts in your shop and what type of problems do they have? I ask because I own a 07 SS and haven't had any major issues with mine.
Nice work
Hello. In your introduction, it was mentioned that there is a high failure rate. Were you referring to the fuel tank pressure sensor itself? Or just the evap system in general?
i just to know do u know how to take out of a 2004 jeep grand cherokee death wobble to fix it plz help me with it
I have a Chevy s10 4×4 with a P0446 replace fuel pressure sensor and same code still comes up. Plus I get a random miss fire 70 mph then goes away at 80 mph can you give me a direction to go.
Mr.O Is there any specific readings from a scanner that you can determine if it's the canister, the ftps or the purge controller under the hood, or do you have to scan regardless of the readings
Would an issue like this cause a crank-no-start but only on warm humid days?
NO
Is a vent solenoid the same as a purge solenoid?
@sma what if theirs no codes and my tank pressure build's up and shuts the fuel pump off when filling up? Is that tank vent solenoid or evap purge valve or possible faulty pressure sensor? Please help me I watch Ur vids and I'm subbed
