Chevrolet Suburban: EVAP Code P0446
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 апр 2021
- In this video I have a look at a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban that came in with the SES light on with a code for the EVAP system. P0446 was the code stored in it. This one was a pretty easy fix -Enjoy!

Kind of an old vid from this winter folks that I kept in the archive for a couple reasons.
-First was the video quality on it sucked. Sorry bout that, I often get distracted working and forget to check on the camera.
-Second I wanted to make sure the customer had no issues and indeed the vehicle worked prefect, ran a full drive cycle and it has been several months with zero problems.
-THIRD and most important I wanted to get another Chevrolet in with this exact EVAP system on it with the very small purge line to the tank and canister so I could see the decay rate on it. Indeed these do bleed down very, very slow compared to the later model GM's with the larger line from the tank to the canister. Any how, more of a self reassurance thing I suppose. At any rate-Enjoy!
Good Post follow-up.
As the owner of an 02 avalanche with the small line, they bleed down very slowly, and these tanks suck to take out! I changed my fuel pump, wasnt fun.
Mr. O. This seems like simple diag and test.....how do the other shops get stumped so easily?.....awesome vids as always......love the channel and your way of diag.....and also love the little quips
Thank you for the followup.
jackburner8107 Flow chart for other shops: evap code, wing a gas cap and a vent solenoid at it. No bueno, to Sma.
I wonder how many of us are not professional mechanics that just like watching the channel 🤔
Wild guess 500k subscribers, 499k amateurs, 995 parts shotgun operators( me too) 5 folks who understand electrically controlled feedback systems and all the software needed to run all the tests to diagnose them.
Shade Tree Mechanic here enjoying a pro diagnosing a system I've never had any (known) issues with!
☝😆
Most of us probably. . . . I wish these were available when I was young, it might have changed my career path.
Same here... Not a mechanic.. I enjoy watching Eric walking us through his thought process and eliminating possible problems, etc. Not to mention his jokes!
sometimes in the video description it'll say 'for entertainment purposes only' and I'm like hey no problem.
Eric kicked the bucket and lived to tell the story. It's a miracle.
I was a mechanic for 48 years. Retired now ...but I love watching this guy work his magic.
Standing on a non Osha approved bucket! Hilarious!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your humor.
"If I can do it... you can do it." I'm a six time stroke survivor with a brain injury. I'll gladly pay someone cause I no longer have the ability. But Eric, I love watching your content and I love what you put out. Keep rockin' brother.
As a certified proctologist I really appreciate your diagnostic methodology on the vent and purge valve.
Best story ever. Was working on my moms old ford something years ago. Doing a simple plug change and knocked the broom handle off and the hood fell flat down on my head. She came over and lifted the hood, while laughing 😂
"Woah! Sorry about that!" (puts hat back on) had me rolling with laughter. Dunno why... anyone else..?
The look on his face 🤣
He was out of uniform :)
Couldn’t recognise him with no cap.
Yeah me too lol
Wow! Three SMA videos in three days! Must be living in a new alternate universe of SMA All Day! Thanks Mr. O. Much appreciated.
I am indeed fortunate to live in South where cars do not rust away like up
North. I did not really know how bad it was until watching your videos
and seeing the problems you encounter daily. It would just break my
heart to take good care of my car and have it rust away in 10 years
or less. Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder and see the
repairing of car problems. Blessings to you and family. THANKS.
Yeah, I live in the South West where cars last till you crash them.
Mom, thanks for making SMA possible! Right place at the right time.
"Lubricate the rubber and slip it down in until it hits..."made me blush.

I almost spit my coffee out while Eric was telling the story of almost hanging himself with the driveshaft. "Mommy heard her baby screaming." Too funny. It brought back memories of dumb things I have done over the years that could have gone wrong very quickly. Thanks for the good laugh this morning Eric, glad it all worked out.
I enjoyed the process and the tips. Yes, working on Southern vehicles has it's advantages. :)
An SMA video is the perfect complement to my morning cup of coffee. It's going to be a good day. Thanks, Eric!
What are moms for. Good thing that didn't happen these days; she take a picture first
and then want to sue the manufacturer for having to big of a driveshaft, i.e. hot cup of coffee
no she wouldn't take a picture, she would make a video and send it to WORLD'S FUNNYESY HOME VIDIEOS, win $10,000 of which the kids gets NOTHING
TikTok classic!
😂
So true!
And mom was thinking "There's Eric, dangling by his ears again."
What could be better to have breakfast and have your brain wake up to this? Thanks, Eric.
I can think of a few things..lol😅
That is the funniest thing I have ever heard! The image of you with your head in between the drive shaft and vehicle shiming down . Then the buck disappears!! 🤣🤣 that's is a hell of an image. I bet your mom was splitting her sides!! That's is hilarious! Thank you for sharing that story. I just woke up and watched this video. Thank you for making me laugh right when I first wake up. Your awesome brother! Love your video's ❤😁🤣
Words of wisdom from the great Kahuna, "Never memorize anything you can look up ... it just wastes brain space."
It's actually something einstein said I believe which even more impresses me about Mr O
Eric I'm 71 years old and made so many things wrong and I'm still making them, you on the other hand are awesome and I love the problems you encounter and fix them.
Had to replace the fuel pump in my 02 Yukon. I removed the rear driver side seat, drilled a hole and found the pump location with a borescope. I made a fiberglass panel before cutting a hole in the floorboard with an air chisel. Replaced the pump, painted the cut area and the fiberglass panel with a marine coating. Installed riv-nuts and bolted the panel down.
Any future work on the pump or accessories should be super easy. 🙂
I thought that the laws of car repair said that whenever you need to lower the gas tank they have to be full.
I think that's only when you have to remove them.
Fuel pumps only fail when the tank is full. That's why I never fill mine more than half way. I figure my fuel pump should last forever.
...well, "ya can't lose 'em ALL!!"
@@andylucas8262 ...you might be on to something there(!)
"...is the tank HALF EMPTY- or HALF FULL?!"
@@daleburrell6273 there's not half of empty its empty!
Keep em coming Eric O! You’re spoiling us!
There are no moments more special than those very special times between a mother and her beloved son!
Of course I had to stop the video because I was laughing so hard. Thanks for sharing!
As an IT administrator I really appreciate your troubleshooting methodology. I wish more of my tier one techs understood it.
As a industrial technician dealing with a lot of instrumentation. I find your troubleshooting totally applicable to my line of work. "You are the shit" lol
Eric O is never a failure. Sometimes parts fail to perform as expected. Don’t beat yourself over the head for that. Nice job
thanks for clearing up some of the mystery of evap systems, and the safety moment.
Im beginning to believe that NAPA is in fact a Sponsor of the Show, your just playing mind games with us.
Man I love this channel. The repair processes and the back stories are precious. Keep going, Eric.
Doesn’t matter if you can show it. You did an excellent job at explaining as usual
that's what SHE said lol
Whether from winter or yesterday, we always appreciate your videos, Eric. Thanks!
Great Video, I enjoy how you talk us through your thought process & how you work your plan.
Clear consise & to the point! Thanks Eric!
I have this week off, I appreciate that you are releasing so many videos just for me.
I was in the middle of watching the mazda wheel bearing then you post and i had to watch it Lol
Yeah, we have to keep in front of this barrage of videos! 👍🔧🧰
I just subscribed after sleeping to these videos since February. I'm comforted by them.
EVERY video I watch of yours, I feel like I have been to school.
Thank you. We do have clean vehicles if they have not come off of the dirt roads. We have very few vehicles this old still left..
Bout fell off my seat bout the prop shaft hanging story
Glad your still hear yo
Thanks Eric. I needed this for future reference as I have a 02 suburban that I bought new. Yes, you guessed right I am in Texas! She is almost as clean as when I bought her. Love your videos, please keep them coming. May God bless you and your family
One man shop here in the UK, love your videos and easy going nature to diagnosis, subscribed!
I’m glad you explained about the video shaking because I thought I was going to have to quit drinking in the morning! Coffee, of course...
The old purge, seal, and ship routine. Thanks Dr. O!
I literally have a p0446 on my 03 silverado and a long crank. Exactly what I needed! Thanks Eric!
Felt like I was drunk and watching this video LOL I kept trying to focus on the blurry picture. I enjoy learning from a great Mechanic, I watched the no start silverado videos and found I had a bad ground on the truck I was working on Thank You Eric O.
Excellent video on this fault code, thanks for the demonstration.
Excellent video, Eric. I’m old school and your explanations help me understand EVAP systems.
LOL by today's EVAP systems, that is old school!!!!
Wish I knew of a mechanic on my side of the country with your skill and knowledge
Does not matter old video or new they are all super.Keep them coming Dr. O.
Eric, that was a funny true story with a happy ending. Keep up the great videos, between you and Iivan of PHAD ,the two of you are great teachers about troubleshooting automotive problems.
Totally thought my contract got outta place and was checking it then I realized it was the video... still great none the less
Good morning Eric. Thanks for the video!
Great video, as a young tech this helps out a lot thank you
Thanks for another awesome video Eric! I've been learning a lot of great stuff from ya, hope you and the family are doing well!
amazing stuff . i’m learning lots here
I'm a professor of Communication, and instead of music while grading papers, I simply come here; best decision ever.
I cannot do anything that might capture my interest whilst doing other things important. Not saying I can't multitask, I certainly can. But anything mildly entertaining when I should be working ensures none of that work will get done.
Your troubleshooting is great, especially on the electrical issues. So is your humor and storytelling. The mental images I get during your stories are excellent. The image of you shimmying down between the muffler and driveshaft on a bucket, then hanging there by your head was very vivid. Sometime can you draw out the evap system on your whiteboard? Keep up the excellent videos!
Got a Colorado with the P0446 today
Your video from a few years back was absolutely perfect for diagnosing
Loved the comment that not to just throw parts at it according to the code description.
After watching that video a few hours ago, this one popped up new
Trying to figure out if my Solus Legend has the capability to function the evap system. (I’m sure it does)
Noted on the diagnoses, it had cleared the drive cycle and failure was later after the IM completion according to freeze frame data.
Thanks man
“Window regulator, don’t fail me now!” As the owner of a much-loved 2002 Tahoe, I know that sound and have had that exact same feeling every time I hear it.
In a perfect world I'd find a way to scoop up South Main Auto, your house - barn - tractors, Mrs. O and the kiddos and transport you to some small town in North Texas. Rarely any snow! No salt! No rust! No state income taxes! You'd be able to actually work on vehicles back into the 1990s... And I'd be able to bring some of my fleet to South Main Auto - South when I really need you. Congra-rats on over 500k subs, and thanks for educating and entertaining us for years.
Thanks for the video, I picked up an 01 suburban last year for the wife and kids to truck around in , Rust free from AZ. We live in Iowa not rust free area not as bad as your area but still plenty o salt on the roads in winter so now we shall see how long the old beast shall last, also it's a 32 gallon tank on those beasts.
22:28 I'm all ears. That's what happens when your bucket kicks out across the workshop.
I'm now the proud owner of an SMA t-shirt. Great stuff.
Great start to my day! Cup of joe and sma video.
I've had a few GMT800s, current is an 04 Suburban Z71 5.3 Flex. Had it for about a month or so, was waiting for the infamous evap codes, finally got one in the p0446. Of course I don't have a "big fancy scan tool", but I have smarts and I can backprobe and test. I don't have an extended crank, truck runs just fine. I was never a parts cannon guy, but I would replace whatever the code said...been doing mechanic work for over 14 years. But since I found your channel over a year ago, I test and take my time before I spend money on parts. However I know how failure prone the fuel pumps are in these trucks. And I have no idea what brand fuel pump is in my truck. But thanks to Mr O, I have wonderful videos like this that lead me in the direction I need to go! I have learned SO much from watching your videos and have become way more confident and comfortable with testing and diagnosing these days.
😳😎Man, you are the beast on these videos and how you track these things down, Great job Eric!!
Love your show, you are the man. Congratulations on your new front and machine
Well sir, another great video. It showed me that I'm not the only one with a 2003 Suburban (Z71) with a P0446 code, and that I have just changed my mind about digging into checking it out myself. I had a mechanic replace "A sensor" last year just before all the COVIDD crap started, and 4 weeks later the Check Engine Light was back. Then the shop closed due to COVID. Great, no warranty work on that one.
Then I heard a couple a months ago, that if the mechanic uses a cheaper non-OEM sensor, it's probably the cheaper Chinese version that dies within 2 to 4 weeks...BINGO ! But the shop is usually closed due to COVIDD now. Well crap, thus the desire to just do it myself. But I have no car lift, and am NOT a mechanic, although I have plenty of tools to do it. So, off to the local Chevy Dealership to pay $1,000 I don't have, on top of the $300 I payed the mechanic last year. It is always something.
Ford had a similar system on the 03 - 04 light duty (F150 - F350) trucks except for the sensor location. The 97 and 98 GM minivans were very similar also. Good fix Mr. O.
That suburban was clean for an 03,Good job mr O,thank u sir 👍
Mom to the rescue. Great and very informative video Mr. O
Morning coffee with with SMA , great information and videos Thanks stay safe
Again, another great video, very professional as always...I loved the story about your ears 👂😀👌
Love the “Birdseye meat nugget” view!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
Fuel tank related stuff always makes me pleased that BMW was smart a couple of times in their design. From what I've worked on, E30s and E36s you just pop the back seat cushion up to have access to the fuel pump and junk. E34s you access it from the trunk.
If you can't blind them with Brilliance baffle them with bull great show as always keep them coming
Eric. I sure wish there was a practical way to have you work on my transports. Alas, I am in Colorado, so there you go..?! You are unique. Thanks for all the info and entertainment. You also are a fellow good man & dad, which I appreciate. And of course... you are doing it all wrong. : )
Hahahaha....”wasn’t OSHA bucket....” Eric you’re the best man. NAPA wake the bleep up and sponsor this man.
Eric, we would love to have you and your family living and working in North Georgia, NO RUST!
his business depends on rust! lol
ah your at that age with many of us that has to prioritize what we can remember. Great video, I thought I was losing my vision looking at the Autel until I realized it was the camera out of focus. 📸🙂
Another good day.
Possibly the vent valve filter half stopped up with dust and dirt. I had. To replace the vent valve. On. My 2003 Silverado 2x in less than 80,000 miles. Another great video from Eric O. Thank you
Wheres that located?
Eric has been in business for 15 years and has zero complaints on his BBB profile. That must be a miracle for an automotive repair shop.
Eric must be paying the BBB to keep his squeaky clean image as a mechanic.😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Eric, you know darn well the fuel pump is just fine. The tank only has a 1/4 of a tank of fuel. Fuel pumps only go out when the tank is full and the tank straps are rusty.
How many GM pickup trucks have you seen with a bed modification for pump access?
Started watching,my wife is working from home so got the look! married men will know, from her and had to pause for about twenty minutes can’t believe how many views were posted when I was away, anyhoo back again her ladyship on to something else now, oh the joys of married life hurry up government and get people back to the office it’s affecting my viewing time, great post Eric
I chased that code on my 04 silverado loading the parts cannon with the tank pressure sensor the canister vent solenoid no change ended up taking the charcoal canister off the truck and blew dust out of it for about 5-10 mins and so far that has fixed the issue
I started with the Vapor Canister Purge Valve on a 2000 sub drove 80 miles CEL then the canister vent solenoid drove another 60 miles CEL again finally bit the bullet pulled the 2nd row seat cut an access panel for fuel pump and replaced the fuel pressure sensor. Good luck
You are the best when pronouncing Chevrolet!
Dr.O I believe you have reached legendary status. Time to build a detached bay for yourself with HVAC, no phone, no compressor and a door you only have a key for. If a test light, paper clip and scan tool can’t fix it, ship it to josh.
Thanks for posting Eric - good info
Eric is so good that science must find a way to replicate him many times over 👍
Oh yah, number one failure, I would never consider bringing my vehicles to you! NOT!!!!! An absolute pleasure to see this type of workmanship!!! While drinking my morning coffee.
This is quality work!!!! You are good SIR!!! I should wish we had soo good mecanics in Norway!!!
Lubricate the rubber! LOL. Love you Eric O.
I'm from southeast Texas & have an 04 Tahoe with practically no rust on it. I was recently working in Iowa & I lost count of how many people looked my Tahoe & said I can tell you're not from here because of how clean & rust free it is. Thought it was pretty funny.
Great job Mr O.
As the former owner of a 2002 Suburban here in the rust belt of Michigan, I feel attacked by this totally relatable content. I had PTSD watching Eric drop those tank straps knowing how much of a pain it is to replace the captured nuts when they pull loose. I had to put a new line set on it because of a leak from a rusted section where it crosses the front of the tank on top. There is no room to work on anything up there. My filler neck disintegrated when I pulled the hoses off the tank. It is partially rubber and part metal. Just replaced it all with rubber hose. Ended up just replacing a section of the hard line with flex tubing and connectors (I believe Eric has a video on that as well) because the body has to come off the frame to get the whole line set run up to the engine. Thank god the newer ones have coated lines that don't rust as badly. I now have a 2011 Suburban and both the fuel and the brake lines are pristine.
Okay, here is my comment. Thanks for the video, always a learning experience.
Don’t know how, but I stumbled upon one of your old videos of you shooting, while I enjoy your normal videos, it would be nice to see another shooting video 👍🏽
