  • Let's have a look at this 2004 Chevy Truck that was dropped off at SMA from another shop that was having trouble diagnosing the classic P0446 "EVAP Vent Performance." Honestly folks the GM Purge / Vent type systems are the easiest systems to diagnose. Take the time to look at the videos below put out by Mike Becker from Wells Vehicle Electronics and educate yourself on these before throwing parts at it. Some of the best vids on the web IMO. -Enjoy!

I commented on your other EVAP vid - P0455. I chased that money light rabbit to no avail. Saw this vid and decided to check the fuel tank pressure sensor. I could check & verify voltage but that was it. Replacing the vapor vent solenoid and purge valve didn’t correct the fault so I ended up at the fuel tank pressure sensor. I did not raise the bed or drop the tank. Sure as heck the sensor tip broke off. Got the soft sensor seal out and was able to wiggle the new sensor in. Did the specific GM “drive cycle” a couple of times and the permanent P0455 was gone. Much appreciated!!

My 3500 Chevy Express was throwing this code. Changed out the evap sensor after watching this video. Fixed it in my driveway for $45. Toughest part was having the patience to lower the tank in order to get to it. Thanks for the info and doing such great vids.

Thanks again for a great video on how to actually diagnose a problem, verify it using data THEN change out components. Great editing and thanks for showing the relevancy and application of wiring diagrams. ATTABOY SIR!!

Eric, you are so technical in your approach and knowledgeable especially when you indicated that the system will check on leaks after the facts and this genius," lucky you perfect businessman".

Great video, very easy to understand. Got to give GM a little credit for not over complicating things. I like simple!

Don't feel bad about EVAP videos every now and then Dr. O. You see them a lot but most of us rarely see them so it's a huge help to watch you diagnose them. OTC better get their poop together and make their scan tools more responsive. No excuse for that crap. Thanks Dr. O!

i always enjoy how you explain how the system works, what is wrong, why it is wrong and the repair itself. the confirming of the repair is always a valuable touch to the end of the video so that we can see what is normal and correct. thanks again eric !

Hi Eric what no Mrs O in this Vid? one of the reasons i like watching your channel is the helpful everyday tips you provide. In this one breaking the plastic nipple on removing the sensor. not only did you show the way you resolved the issue you explain why a drywall screw works better than a sheet metal screw in plastic. Keep the quality Videos coming.
