April 14th 2022, USS The Sullivans is taking on water after a reported serious hull breech. The leak is stabilized for now. You can help by donating to the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, or by donating to your local museum ship to help preserve these vessels for future generations.
It has been fixed and I toured on it yesterday! The inside is closed off sadly, but they said it will be sent elsewhere in the next year to be refurbished and returned once done
In August 1995, the second USS The Sullivans, DDG-68, an Arleigh Burke class Aegis destroyer was launched at Bath. Maine. She was christened by her sponsor, Iowa school teacher Kelly Ann Sullivan Loughren, the granddaughter of Albert Sullivan, who was lost on the Juneau. Kelly still keeps up with the crew. The ship still serves proudly today
Michael Sullivan that’s very very very inaccurate. Those two Alreigh Burke class destroyers and the Japanese destroyer would have obliterated the aliens the second they opened fire. Overlapping fields of point defense and supportive fire would have ended the movie in 30 seconds
As a cub scout I once got the chance to camp out on the sullivans ( or the littlerock) the ships are beautiful even today. I live very close to buffalo and visit the ships on waterfront every so often.
my father was on the USS Sullivans 1943-45. He was Radarman First class. He was 18 years old. I imagine my grandmother, no communication, just weekly the war department visiting her South Milwaukee neighborhood and giving a family a gold star to put in their window-- as a sign their son had been killed in action. My father would make it home. The whole neighborhood gathered around as he got out of the car, his mom rushing to hug him. They sobbed. not a dry eye amongst the neighbors. A feast was planned. My father took off his Navy uniform. And ate an Armenian buffet
Who is here after USS The Sullivans is now partially sinking in Buffalo? This is a sad day, I hope Wargaming put part of their earning they've earned in this video to save them
At almost 80 years old, I am the youngest of the 5 Miller brothers who proudly served Our Country. My brother Harold was in Africa during WW-2. My brothers James and Eugene were in the Korean War but separated because of the Sullivans. At the time, Eugene got very sick and according to the Sullivans’ agreement, Eugene was assigned to a non combat zone and eventually sent home and given an honorable discharge. James however stayed in and was in the Vietnam war. As my brother John and I became old enough to enlist in the Army, the Army separated us. James was in Japan, John was in Germany and I was here in Buffalo on a missile base during the Cuban Missile Crisis. We all came home safely thankfully but Harold, James and Eugene have passed away. John and I are at the tail end of our journeys and will join the others and once again become the 5 Miller brothers.
This was the only ship to be named for a whole family rather than one single person (like Issac KIDD, Allen M SUMNER, and so on). The Juneau brothers all served aboard said ship, and were lost in the naval phase of the Battle of Guadalcanal. Five brothers… five brothers who’s spirit lives on and fights on.
I was stationed at the US Coast Guard base Buffalo when the Sullivans was brought in we escorted her into the dock where she sits now and boarded her for a safety inspection and subsequently I toured her after she was permanently installed at the dock at the Naval Park along with the USS Little Rock.A huge piece of a naval history. If you ever get a chance to see the movie the fighting Sullivans it'll help you better understand why her name carries such a great honor.
Fletcher Class destroyers have alot of history. I would love to see a episode on the USS Johnson of Third Fleet, Taffy 3. This destroyer is very famous in my mind as it, along with (I think) 2 other destroyers held off the Yamato , along with various other Battleships in the battle of Leyte Gulf. The actions of this ship saved 300k soldiers of the sixth army led by McArthur on the beach of Archipelago. Very awesome stuff. By the way, if anyone has found some cool videos on it copy a link below.
A book is being written about the Fletcher Class destroyers, USS Nicholas 449 and USS O'Bannon 450 and their role in this event and the signing of the peace treaty on the Missouri.
I am very glad i was not alive in that horrible conflict. However, it was horrible for millions of people, not just the Sullivans. Singling them out as more worthy of a moment of silence than any of the other tens of millions dead is downright disrespectful though
If not everyone can have it, why should anyone? Your argument seems to be 'its not disrespectful because other ships were named after people'. The way i see it is that every ship you build and name after a sailors you reject thousands of other sailors as worthy. That just isn't something i agree with
First off great video! 2nd off, Subs could work well in WOWS...imo. Not having that really takes away from the DD play.We can't control ANTI aircraft. We can't control depth charger/headhogs. The only thing we can control are guns and torpedos. 2 main gameplay categories from the dd are left out.
PhlyDaily Each time you try to post in the forums of WOWS about adding gameplay, the assholes, or fan boys jump and say "nah, the game is fine as it is". WOWS could be much better adding more manually systems (not removing the current automatic ones optionally), this would make the game much harder to master.
Sagara Sousuke dude. adding things into the game at this stage is not adviseable, especially things that may be potentially game breaking. WoWs is yet to be released to the public for stress testing and grind abuse. I dont say i dont support phlys idea, but give the devs more time. thx
ISAFMobius18 agreed they have already tried it.Also destroyers with smoke screens and troll amounts of torps is enough i don't need invisible subs messing up my day with destroyers and Carriers running around already doing it.
I imagined myself as one of the last 2 remaining sullivans before drowning, I feel the pain that they had, it must be horrible to see 3 brothers die while knowing that your last brother and yourself will get the same fate
I learnt about the Sullivan brothers in Saving Private Ryan, their deaths were a tragedy but weren't in vain because they saved many American family from going through the same thing. RIP 🙏🙏🙏
well the one whom should be considered as one of the best Naval Legends is no other than USS Enterprise, Yorktown-class carrier she has fought nearly from the Pearl Harbor to Japan and nearly engage in every major battle in the Pacific which no other ship had earn so many battle
Angelo Agriam I think they are only focusing on ships that have lasted to become museums up to this day, since Enterprise was scrapped, we might not see anything on her.
I have been looking for information about the DEs the forgotten little boys. My father was on the USS Hodges DE231. Your work is superior quality so thanks.
Taffy 3 was a battle formation, most of the Fletcher Class were either lost during the war,or broken up for scrap I think that O'Bannon was one that was lost, the USS The Sullivans is only one of four that survived, and now is in Buffalo,NY
When i mean taffy 3, i mean an easier way of saying, johnston, samuel b roberts, hoel and all the other ships involved. o bannon herself had quite a few interesting stories
One VERY important detail was "Not" mentioned in this video ( Sadly ) . . . when the mother of the Sullivan brothers commissioned the ship baring her sons names, she was to have said . . . "My boys are back at sea ".
My neighbor & friend served on the Evans(DD-552) recently died. God, the stories he told. My favorite now is-After being hit by 4 Kamikaze's, he was chosen along with "about a dozen" other sailors to remain aboard while the ship was towed home. I wondered about his memory, but if you google DD-552 you will see her being towed into San Francisco with "about a dozen" sailors standing on the bow. I love that picture of him and his ship, coming home after surviving one of the most violent Destroyer vs aircraft actions of the war.
Fun fact, the small TF that protected the Houston nicknamed themselves the "Streamlined Bait Division". My grandfather served aboard USS Ingersoll DD-652 during that same action.
I've visited the USS The Sullivans twice now in Buffalo, the second time I noticed the displays had changed and the ship looked to be in better shape. I'm assuming that they are continuing to upgrade the museum and make a visit an enjoyable experience. My dad was with me both times, he had served on a DE during the war, and after Okinawa was transferred to a Destroyer, and during the Korean war he served on the cruiser Worcester. There is also a DE on display in Albany New York that we visited as well. Both ships are anchored in fresh water which should insure they survive a long time without any serious problems.
The navy kept news of the brother's deaths a secret to preserve security. When the Navy finally got around informing their family, v two months had passed. The Navy sent three officers to their parent's home to inform the family. When they arrived, they were greeted by the Sullivan's father, who had been preparing for work. The ranking officer told Thomas Sullivan, "I have some news about your boys." " Which one?" Sullivan asked. " "I'm sorry," the officer replied, "all five."
A sad story. I had a neighbor who was on another ship and saw the Sullivans ship go down. I remember the movie, its hard to say how much of it was fiction but it was a great film.
Coming to this video because of the ship sinking in Buffalo port. Maybe WG can support recovery for this historic ship. I am not American but respect the firepower they have built over the years of human to human warfare.
There are actually 4 Fletcher-class destroyers that still around, 3 of them is in the USA. The fourth is USS Charette or it's current name INS Velos, in Palaio Faliro,Greece
To put it mildly: The Sullivan brothers are why no family can have all the male members of a family serve on the same ship, at the same time -- because it is the idea that, genetically, if every drafted, and related, man died in military service, then the family they were a part of could not continue the genetic line. It is also a large part of the inspiration behind "Saving Private Ryan."
@@robertyoung3992 : I dont know who the Niland brothers were, but who I'm referring to were actual sailors killed in the Pacific Theater. While I was in Navy basic, we went through a naval history course -- and the O'Sullivan brothers came up as a tragedy during World War II, when they all died because they all were serving on the same ship. As a result, the US government does not allow more than 1 sibling to serve with another, nor do they draft the oldest male in any family.
The USS The Sullivans needs YOUR help! It's currently damaged and taking on massive amounts of water after a winter storm...please donate to the charity so we can save this historic ship!
Why we don't have more fletcher destroyers preserved around the nation, I will never understand. Grandpa served on the USS Melvin for the first year of the war before he was moved to a LST
Donnie Montoya well should you ever see this response, that many fletchers is a lot of steel. Steel we could use in other ships or vehicles. They were also not as glorious as battleships or carriers and they were aging badly, even by the end of the war. They didn't really have the displacement or deck to be given missiles, a very common post war armament, they were outgunned, outmanuevered, and aging, and so very few were preserved.
Talks about USS Sullivan (DD537) *Thumbnail shows otherwise* Me: When can we get a Modern Agis Destroyer for April fools equip with radar guided CIWS and tomahawk cruise missile WG?
I think the USS Laffey ( The ship that will not die) should be the next Naval Legends video, considering she survived kamikaze attacks and bomb strikes in WW2.
+NoJokes11B It applies to families who have already lost their sons, and now daughters in battle. For the sole survivor policy to have an affect on you, a sibling of some sort must have died in combat for you to not be drafted, conscripted or sent to war.
Fletchers were among the 77 destroyers lost in combat during the war in the Pacific against the Japanese Imperial Fleet. Read Blood on the Sea. It gives a good accounting of the circumstances and the battles they fought and were lost in. 👍🏻🇺🇸
Wargaming produces their own music, and none of the songs here appear in the games. It's likely these songs were produced specifically for Naval Legends, and will not be named nor released any time soon.
great video series. u guys should check out the story of the fletcher-class USS Johnston. She pretty much took on the main Japanese fleet single handedly
The Samuel B. Roberts didn't have a very long moment of glory, but she proved herself in the same battle that the Johnston did. The story of Sammy B.'s fight would be a cool one to hear too. "The Destroyer that Fought Like a Battleship."
great videos. I have a few requests though can you guys please make a video for the USS Enterprise (CV-6)? if that isn't a legend ship i don't know what is. also, I think a submarine video would be great, maybe the USS bowfin in honolulu or the USS pampanito in San Francisco (across the bridge from WG NA west)
oh! I'm guessing they mean that the Sullivan brothers were greater than their parents because of what they have done. Yeah it does seem like an insult.
+Michael Evans They didn't say lesser. If you listen carefully they say Aletta. Al Sullivan's (the eldest brother) son, James served on the Fletcher class USS The Sullivans and Al's granddaughter served on board the Arleigh Burke class USS the Sullivans
Again thanks for the great video! Another ship I have been on ! She anchored next to the Little Rock! !! Wonderful time at the shipyard! A must see for anyone interested in WW2
Off topic i know, but can you please tell me whats the song playing at 2:00? And Keep up the great work on the game! you're doing a fantastic job so far and i love the beta!

A moment of silence for the Sullivan Brothers, and all those who went down in the name of their country...

The Legend Of The Sullivan Brothers!
They really need to cover the USS Laffey II. She's the DD sitting next to USS Yorktown at Patriots Point. The ship that wouldn't die.

+NoJokes11B It applies to families who have already lost their sons, and now daughters in battle. For the sole survivor policy to have an affect on you, a sibling of some sort must have died in combat for you to not be drafted, conscripted or sent to war.
Spencer Aulenback I see. I thought my recruiter pulled some strings!
the sullivan brothers were from waterloo iowa.
Fletchers were among the 77 destroyers lost in combat during the war in the Pacific against the Japanese Imperial Fleet. Read Blood on the Sea. It gives a good accounting of the circumstances and the battles they fought and were lost in. 👍🏻🇺🇸
What's the music called in 3:37?
Wargaming produces their own music, and none of the songs here appear in the games. It's likely these songs were produced specifically for Naval Legends, and will not be named nor released any time soon.
To The Sullivans: Attention! Salute!
Hearing USS Sullivans is flooding to her hull makes me sad about it
USS The Sullivans
Anybody know the name of the music from 2:53 to 3:14?
I like this narrator.
How many people are here now because it's damaged in the river and want to know more about it?
great video series. u guys should check out the story of the fletcher-class USS Johnston.
I've read her story, and I don't think her, and Taffy 3 glory can be covered in a single Naval Legend episode.
I also want to see an episode on it. It'll be a very long episode.
along with her Fletcher Class sisters the USS Hoel (which also sank during the Battle off Samar) the USS Heermann and the USS Samuel B Roberts
I've been to the USS The Sullivans in 2016.
great videos.
I have a few requests though
can you guys please make a video for the USS Enterprise (CV-6)? if that isn't a legend ship i don't know what is.
also, I think a submarine video would be great, maybe the USS bowfin in honolulu or the USS pampanito in San Francisco (across the bridge from WG NA west)
Canada, Britain, and Australia had one of the best class of destroyers. the tribal class and their is only one left out of 27
@ 03m:23s - "...launched in the presence of a lesser Sullivan, the mother of the brothers."
What do they mean, "a lesser Sullivan"?
+Michael Evans The Parents of the Sullivan brothers.
Vanilla_Donut Yeah, um, that's kind of an insult to all parents everywhere, no? I'm more referring to the use of "lesser". :shrug
oh! I'm guessing they mean that the Sullivan brothers were greater than their parents because of what they have done. Yeah it does seem like an insult.
Her name was "Aletta" Sullivan. (I believe her roots were Italian) The family story was rather sad.The Father sank into despair and alcoholism.
+Michael Evans They didn't say lesser. If you listen carefully they say Aletta. Al Sullivan's (the eldest brother) son, James served on the Fletcher class USS The Sullivans and Al's granddaughter served on board the Arleigh Burke class USS the Sullivans
Save the USS Sullivan's donate to the Buffalo & Erie County Navy Park she is sinking as of 4-14-2021
This guy should narrate all wargamings videos!!
Again thanks for the great video! Another ship I have been on ! She anchored next to the Little Rock! !! Wonderful time at the shipyard! A must see for anyone interested in WW2
it is the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park and not a ship yard
Off topic i know, but can you please tell me whats the song playing at 2:00? And Keep up the great work on the game! you're doing a fantastic job so far and i love the beta!

great job
2:55 :( Sad that they had to loose them. It made me almost cry. I hope they are in heaven now :)
AJ Flemister There is no such place.
I was on this ship a couple of years ago in Buffalo.
And now it's currently sunk in the buffalo harbor. But they are trying to pump the water out and get it fixed.
she capsized
My grandad served on the namesake of that class. The uss fletcher
1 key = 1 big hug
If you can find the movie THE FIGHTING SULLIVANS a great movie about the brothers growing up
My father served on The Sullivans in 1956. He later had 5 sons.
