The new episode is going to tell you about the legendary battleship that became a symbol of the end of World War II.
On the eve of the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which marked the beginning of the Pacific War, we're going to tell you about a legendary battleship that became a symbol of the end of the Second World War-Missouri. On September 2, 1945, the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, which officially marked the end of World War II, was signed on board this famous ship.
The ship participated in numerous operations after the end of World War II. Her name was struck off the naval register only in 1995-not that long ago by historical standards. But how did the ship manage to maintain her efficiency throughout the years?

Which Missouri? The one that can give large amounts of credits per battle (Legacy Variant), or the slightly worse Iowa with a semi-modified model (0.10.7 Variant)?
I love this video. The fact that this is the first plastic model of a warship I ever built, it's history and other factors are why it'd my favorite warship ever. I love this video, I waited so long 😍😍🤩☺
USS New Jersey's max displacement is 68,000 tons in 1968
If you win the Missouri what platform do you get it on?
Because I only play on Xbox and mobile

Knowing the history.... did anyone else tear up a bit at the part about the kamikaze's?.... That and the salute to the Arizona at the end got me too...
I’ve been there when I was 18 with my sister. I was imagine what that pilot was thinking just before the impact.
Was melancholy at first but realistically probably “Death to America all hail Emperor” or “Mom they didn’t tell me how to land”
Just made a speech about Pearl Harbor today, there was a half Japanese friend ish that presented right before me.
Its her birthday she explained how she felt adversity because she was half Japanese. She even freaking winked at me when I showed Mount Fuji, damn I feel bad for her. it was pre-prepared I’ve stayed neutral.
The black tears of Pearl Harbor was a scene
When they mentioned the guns were raised to watch over the Arizona, that got me. 🥲
What an amazing storyline. I'm from Arizona, and the USS Arizona is my consumate favorite ship. The story about mooring the Missouri with the guns had me tearing up so fast...
Yes
Man I read the first sentence when I started watching the video so I came back to comment after and noticed you also commented on what I was going to. That salute to the Arizona watching over her and all the souls still on eternal patrol. Absolute class act. Thank you to all the men and woman in the military that put everything on the line for us civilians. I’m Canadian and have nothing but the utmost respect for military members here and abroad
Married my wife whos from Japan on beach of Oahu back in June of 2019 and we went to Pearl Harbor after our wedding and both got to stand on USS Missouri at the very spot where Japan had surrendered. It was very surreal to think of how different the world was just 78 years ago and that our union would have been unthinkable back then.
Even more ironic because I looked around the main deck of the ship near Turrent #2 where my wifes country finally gave up their pride and surrendered, half the tourists we saw were Japanese with translator guides. My wife was very open minded and courious to see the "American" version of history as she had been tought differently growing up in Japan in the late 80s and 90's about Pearl Harbor and the ar.
I was however REALLY BUMMED out I couldn't see/pay respects to the Arizona because it was closed due to damage to the anchor system. Would have been another childhood dream come true on that trip.
When I first got off the tour bus, I had a wave of emotion, feeling just awe to know that I was at the very spot where so much history was created and so much life was lost, all I could do was say a prayer before I kept going.....
The iowa class, probably one of the finest battleships of WW2, no match. Imagine what the showdown would have been like between any of the iowa class and the yamato, the biggest battleship ever made went face to face!
Considering the tech and crew the US had, the Yamato would not win,
Yamato would 100% win in a day battle with decent weather, and would most likely win in a night battle with decent weather.
@@alexandarvoncarsteinzarovi3723 Wrong. Yamato had a better trained crew, and some better tech alone is not enough to make your ship better.
@@metaknight115 Crew and tech are 1 thing, the other is supplies, considering the gas guzzlers the Yamato were, plus there were reports of certain maintenance issues, on the ship itself, such as lightbulbs would explode for no reason from power fluxes,
That being said they were never true log distant ocean voyagers, they were good in the archipelago of Japan and the rest but not like going into the North Atlantic or Pacific,
@@alexandarvoncarsteinzarovi3723 Actually, the reason lightbulbs would explode was because due to how powerful the muzzle blast and shockwaves were when Yamato's main guns were fired.
I actually got the opportunity to talk with a member of the crew from Missouri earlier this year! He was there during the surrender of Japan and told me stories about the crew and the ship! She represents my home state in the best way!
Oh wow!
It's quite sad, but also amazing. It's only been 80 years since the most devastating war in human history, yet we today are much closer than we think to it since our grandparents most likely endured it and went through those 6 tough years. Amazing to know many people who went through those years lived long enough to tell their stories!
Still gets me in the feels when people mention the Missouri stands watch over her lost sister Arizona
I served on board. What an incredible Dreadnaught she will always be. I shined that very plaque on the Quarterdeck with nevr dull many times on mid watches. It led me to a great career I wish I could have served my entire career on board what I will always view as the place I became a man. A piece of me will reside on her hallowed decks and in her history forever.
When did you serve on her, I served on her from 1991 and decom’d in 1992. I was in second division deck.
Seeing all the enlisted sailors watching the Japanese surrender is amazing. How many times in history has the lower ranks been present when a major war ends. There is something so American about that moment, it makes me proud.
I consider my 3 week long layover in Hawaii while with the USMC one of the most fortunate events of my life thus far. Getting to set foot on Missouri was one of many highlights of my time there. I truly do appreciate WG making these videos highlighting the lives of such historic ships as Missouri. I don't use twitter so no Missouri for me.
I wish the BATTLESHIPs were never decommissioned.
Actually the Iowas are on some what stand by. In case we need to engage in naval combat.
They are resting, yet sleeping very lightly
they wouldnt last a single engagement in todays arena, UNFORTUNATELY. Id love for those big guns to come alive once again
@@benschoppert7769 the US would be in alot of trouble if the Iowas had to be woken up dude. Its not incase of a naval fight, most are museums etc so are kinda maintained but nowhere near combat ready. If the iowas had to be sent out then that would mean the US is on its last legs and theyre being used to defend the most important area
Me too.
nobody can change my mind
battleships are the coolest ship
Win by pure superior firepower
It was a honor to visit both The USS Missouri (BB-63) and The Arizona memorial.
The four Iowa sisters aren’t retired, they’re just sleeping.
Waiting for the US to call on them again
Let the steel-clad leviathans sleep for now and work to make sure we need not wake them
Yeah there's absolutely no way the Navy will ever recommission these ships, unfortunately. Too expensive to maintain, operate, and crew, obsolete in an age where air superiority is everything, there's really nothing a battleship can do that our modern fleet can't accomplish as is. Sad, but it's just not practical.
I'm pretty sure the 1989 turret explosion would prevent Iowa from going into active service again.
its over guys someone already won..
my Iowa class battleship collection wont be complete anymore.. I only needed Missouri
Better make a naval legends on Wisconsin soon. Before that famous temper strikes again!
temper temper
This ship's story was so great, that it made me cry out of sheer respect.
I want to be on board her at least once in my life.
I was born in Arizona and I find it comforting that the beginning of WW2 is just meters away from the ending and that the Missouri is watching over my state’s ship
saw her in pearl harbor for the first time in summer of 2017, what an amazing ship! the first time i saw this lady and stepped on her teakwood deck was back in november 13, 1990, the same day she was underway to persian gulf.
i called her home from november 13, 1990 to march 31, 1992, on the decommissioned date. home sweet home for all them days. i'm so fortunate to have served on this lady, and went to war on this battleship.
I love that ship. I am a plank owner from her recommissioning In 1986. What an honor to sail on her
Naval legends needs to go on Netflix it’s that good. Although this one is lacking the cool intro
I was waiting for Missouri to appear on Naval Legends for a long time. Finally. Thank you.
The battleship Missouri was amazing and I love the ship and the whole Iowa class battleships
Damn! We should have at least had 1 Montana
I'm so proud that i actualy visited this massive ship in real life as an European, as a Hungaryan to be exact. With my visit i got my self a paper card, a card that would have allowed me to get this beautifull Missuri ship ingame by tiping the code that is provided on the card. That was the reason i dowloaded the game, would ahve started playing BUT unfortunately it says that i have to be American to be able to get it.
Instantly i got disapointed and deleted the game in my anger.
Just wanted to tell my sad story. Carry on boyz
Kind of stupid how people insult Missouri, as if Missouri doesn't deserve a single recognition
Probably because she’s overrated and causes the other Iowa’s (especially New Jersey, the most decorated battleship in USN history) to be not deserve any recognition on anything. Missouri is everywhere: merchandise, video games, movies and everything man. Where’s USS New Jersey in a movie or videogame? She’s overrated. It doesn’t discredit the stuff she actually did, but those things shouldn’t give her superiority over the ships that outdid her. It’s unfair to those ships. Also it doesn’t help that girl in the BTS for Battleship said that Missouri was “the most important battleship in history”. Like, how? I guess USS Enterprise, USS New Jersey, USS Constitution, HMS Victory and HMS Warspite don’t exist…
@@Aelvir114 You forget that Mission has earned her own place in the tree. Although not as dramatic as Midway, they are still worth recognition.
@@Aelvir114 I saw an article describing Missouri as the most famous battleship ever made. Excuse me, but Bismarck has multiple movies, video games, models, toys, and even two God damn songs about her. Where's Missouri's song.
Yamato had all of that as well, and an EXTREMELY successful anime series that has been on going since the 70s.
New Jersey, Iowa, and even Wisconsin had more interesting careers than Missouri.
Missouri got hit by a kamikaze but it literally shrugged it off and continued the fight. Fires were quickly extinguished and no American lives were lost.
That was beautiful, my favorite part was when he explained why her guns were raised up. I shed a tear when they said it was symbolic in watching over the Arizona
Im from Missouri and im close to Independence Missouri..... So this ship means a lot to the people here in Missouri..... Well if we have any war veterans from Missouri......
33 KNOTS?! THATS HELLA FAST!
35.4 knots which was achieved by Missouri's sister New Jersey is even faster. Those things may be gigantic, but they were definitely built for speed.
She was launched January 29th 1944. I love the raised guns watching over the USS Arizona.
It just gives me chills Thanking about BB Missouri with her guns and colors hoisted as she keeps a watchful eye over
BB Arizona.
QM2 Jack Frost. Plank owner 1984 - 1987. Started in 6th division (boats), with the upper handling room as my GQ station on the 5' 36 mounts. Struck QM and spent my last years aboard on the 04 level bridge plotting courses across the Atlantic and the Caribbean. Remember "holy stoning" the decks in front of turret 2, polishing the brass on the 04 bridge and cleaning everything up every day after gunnery practice. Shooting the tops of icebergs in the Antarctic with full broadsides was a treat. Best time of my young Navy. Proud to be a Battleship Sailor on "The Big Stick"!
Ah yes the ship that sink the Alien spaceship and save the world.
But before that she was hijacked by terrorist but a cook saved the day.
And she will always be remembered as a naval legend
Great quality production... Hope you guys keep up the documentary series
The Iowa class battleships are my favourite class of battleships I think
Imagine Montana had been build during WW2, the museum ship got abe Montana afterward

Eh, Yamato did it first
This is a brilliant video and teaches so much about a great ship. Nice work.
The most beautiful war machine ever conceived
One of my uncles (Dick) was a navy signalman on the Missouri and was at Tokyo Bay when Japan signed the peace treaty. He told us he was handed a signal after the treaty was signed. He turned on his signal light, aimed it out towards the fleet, and flashed out the signal, "Cease Fire, Cease Fire." So, he actually sent the last signal of WW II.
Back in the 1950s he was brought to New York to be on a TV show called “We the People” where they interviewed him about his experiences. I still remember watching my uncle Dick tell his story on television.
Another flawless video! Well done WG!
She surprisingly gave me a reason to visit Pearl Harbor
she is such an iconic battleship great video world of warships
Imagine this ship comes face to face with the Yamato battleship or the Musashi
She would loose in a day battle with decent weather, would most likely loose in a night battle with decent weather, and would most likely win in any battle with poor visibility.
Imagine if the Montana class battleships were built today? With today's technology? They would be twice the size of the Iowa class battleships and it would be nuclear powered.
They should be name United State class because they would be the best of the best
even if the Montana Class Battleships would be built, they would have an extra turret of a 16 inch gun, advanced dual purpose secondaries and more AA defense with Bofors 40mm quad
and rememebr folks... when the railguns come online.. the battleships WILL return
I've been waiting for this
Actually misouri was introduced in the movie BATTLESHIP
*Under Siege
I'm surprised that they haven't done the Iowa class battleship New Jersey considering she is the most decorated warship in the US Navy I believe.
They have... 5 years ago...

I had the opportunity to see this beautiful ship about a week ago, amazing experience and so much history inside
Thank you for this video missouri is my favourite ship of all time.
Mine is HMS Edinburgh, don't ask why, it just is :)
Man the Iowa-class are my favorite battleships and Missouri is my favorite of all! Feel blessed to have walked on her deck back home in Hawai’i!!! She’s a majestic beauty like her sisters! All hail the Mighty Mo!!!
Ah, the USS Missouri... made famous by Douglas MacArthur and Casey Rybeck.
More than JUST a Cook!!
Mom, I just pooped on my diaper during exercise onboard Miss Mo
my granddad served on the uss missouri and the deck armor protected him from one of the kamikaze attacks
They need to recommission the Iowa Class battleships.
Have u seen reagens plans.
All of the remaining battle ships have been reconditioned by Eo of president Reagan. They are all in working condition and battle ready. They all have sleleten crews that keep everything working. If you get a chance to go to Hawaii go onboard the Missouri. Every station is lit up, there are signs everywhere saying "DO NOT TOUCH"! The biggest reason for the old war horses to be in battle ready condition is as a result of enemy EMP's that can shut down the modern "battle ships".
They're not that useful in modern combat. All that armour, and all those guns, don't mean much to a missile
@@solthegamer3769 One EMP strike will knock out a modern destroyer. The old school ships are all analogue and are not affected by an EMP.
@@atbl100 And one missile will take out a Battleship

Oh my god.
Uss missouri and iowa are my favourite in iowa class battleship
Mine are Missouri and Wisconsin
My Dad from Missouri, Mom from Wisconsin. Good enough reason for me.
Love it!!!!
My Father was the radioman on the SS399 SeaCat - one of 12 Submarines that Escorted the BB63 Missouri into Tokyo Bay - My Father watched the whole Surrender thing from the bow of the SeaCat with a 1911 45 strapped to his side. Have this documented in his Diary which is in my Possession as well as Correspondence on Original SS399 Seacat Letterhead since My father was the Radioman. Was in Pearl Harbour 2018 to visit the Missouri. All of this and Born in St. Louis Missouri at St. Marys Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri
The dent in the starboard side from the first kamikaze plane is still there. And the captain of the ship ordered that the pilot from that plane be given a proper Burial at Sea. Complete with a Japanese flag.
The Musashi and Yamato were the symbol of brute force, but they lack some versatility, the US navy had their ships much more flexible to deal with many situations. Battleships today obviously cannot match the modern warfare, even the Iowa class. But if the Navy one day upgrades the Missouri with more ATA guns and better missles, it may become a powerful sieging ship and serve the US once again
Its speculated that the reason why the USS Montana was canceled was due to the US congresswomen Jeannette Rankin of Montana voting no to the deceleration of war, the sole congress member to do so.
i love this video, it is true and shows the true scale of what happened with the 'Mighty Mo' also would love to have her in this great game
I know battleships are very old for modern warfare but I'd rather see cannon fire than missiles
No gun no fun
@@derekmurray1462 yap need more 400mm artillery barrage
Depends heavily on the opponent in modern days. If the hypothetical foe is China, BBs have their role to play. 70% of China's industry lays well within the range of an Iowa.
This story, gave me goosebumps, it's so amazing. Aswel were it end up at the start for the us involvement of the 2nd world War, at pearl harbor. It's on my bucket list of places to visit. And then to think I was already impressed by uss Texas and uss Iowa.
A truly awesome ship even 70+yrs later Mighty Mo
Está genial
i wish wows did it so that for example everytime you get a new ship, you can choose what ship in that class you want, and then get that, so for example if i unlock the tier 9 iowa, i can play missouri instead, it would add some much needed diversity to the game instead of always seeing the exact same ships
My friend was on the USS Missouri for its last trip around the world. He was an old timer of 25 years old at the time. It barely fit through the Panama Canal with inches to spare on both sides.
Well made documentary
9:55 THICCEST battleship I've seen so far XD

Can u still get Missouri my uncle was a gunner in turret one in ww2 and the Cold War I hope to see the ship in person one day he used to say she was our grand gem
USS Enterprise next
this old battleship had so much gun but current warship just became less gun but much destruction
ในชีวิตอยากไปสักครั้ง❤️
16:44 such a melancholic feeling. I hope Missouri comes to Azur Lane and look over Arizona.
I knew they gonna shown up the proud sister of her class after Iowa. The one and only "Mighty Mo".
Fact - because of the current seat President in office at that time of ww2 officially ended was Harry S.Trumman, he was from Missouri. It took place onboard her deck. If FDR live long enough, it will actually be Iowa took the glory but nobody in neither Navy or in the armed forces or historian talk argue cause "Meh~, the war is over, we should rest"
Needs to be something other than Twitter allowed for sharing since some of us don't have it and will not or can not use it.
its so weird seeing a battleship with modern weapons...
