@@yuxiangmeng7898 @Gerasimos Seriatos Gerasimos answer is correct, but there is another secret connection between Averof and Papandreou! Georgios Papandreou was imprisoned in the "Averof" prisons institution in 1942 (a reformational prison built by G. Averof in 1892), after Germans arrested him for publishing an illegal anti-Nazi resistance newspaper, called "Eleftheria" (Freedom) ! So the same name "Averof" first imprisoned him and then liberated him !

The only strength i trully see is that upper deck armor that is tier 10 equilivant... The Averof was infront of the Dreadnought war ship's a small frigate but for her dimensions extremely well equipped insane firepower and good trained crew ho fight the Turks outside of the Aegean Sea for 60 Years.
Fun Fact : The Greek Navy is also called "The Invincible Hellenic Navy" because from the ancients times there is no record's of the Greeks losing a naval battle to another nation (this goes from WW2 all the way back to the battle of Salamis). Also , Averof's nickname is "The lucky uncle George" because of his risky style of fighting and the fact that he survived 5 wars

My grandfather served this war ship as an artillery operator in both world wars. He was born in 1898 and passed out at the age of 92 years old.. Very proud
Two more stories about admiral Kountouriotis which demonstrate his daring, heroic character and his patriotism. After the Battle of Elli the Greek goverment congratulated but also admonished the admiral because ''he exposed the most modern and valuable ship of the fleet to great danger''. He answered that ''the battleships are intented for use in battle'' and ''possible damage or destruction must not discourage us from the nessesary actions.'' In 1913 the Ottomans bought a super dreadnought which was under construction in Great Britain by Armstrong Whitworth (It was the Rio de Janeiro ordered initially for the Brazilian navy). This alarmed the Greek goverment as with this ship the Ottomans would take the upper hand and another war would possibly break out. Kountouriotis went to prime minister Venizelos with a plan: he will take a torpedo boat and wait in the open sea near Gibraltar and as the ship is coming from Britain ''I will nail her with two torpedoes and sent her to hell. Of course after that you will have to disown me and dismiss me from office (I don't care) , Greece will pay reparations but Turkey even if all hell break out will be unable to move against us'' (the words are exact). Venizelos freaked out with such a daring proposition and didn't answer. However, the WW I shortly broke out and the ship was consficated by the British authorities and entered service as the HMS Agincourt.
She's a beautiful old lady. I had the pleasure of touring her last September. She's a treasure the Hellenic Navy and citizens of Greece can be and rightfully are, proud of. @@exJacktar We do too. Ships often have feminine names and are referred as "she" in Greek. In the case of the Averof it's a "Θωρηκτό" which roughly translates to something like a large warship or battleship, and is a neuter word. It rightfully deserves to be in the game with honors!
@nyhunter256 S. The initial literal translation is correct: "Great is the power of the Sea" "Kratos" here means power in the sense of raw power. Don't forget that in Greek mythology the two enforcers of Zeus were Kratos (=Power) and Via (=Violence).

@@TheGentleUncle I'm just saying, the main reason Hellenic Navy has such a good battle record since the Persian Wars is because its officers always knew how to exploit the main advantage of a maritime warforce, which is mobility, demonstrated at its peak with the Orlov's Revolt and the Independence War were Ottoman flagships and even entire ship formations were counter-Allahu-ackbared with semi-expendable (previously merchant) bomb-sailboats. There's a good reason Averof is called a "battleship" by Greeks, since she is a relative anomaly in the usual Hellenic Navy dogma of mobility over armour, firepower and staying power, and an armoured cruiser, though nimbler than battleships, battlecruisers and heavy cruisers, is likely still well above the expected Hellenic Navy displacement requirements for a combat ship, don't forget it was an opportunistic purchase.

In the wikipedia article about the battle, the Turk losses are stated as 41 killed and 104 wounded, with 3 ships damaged. But I'm not sure, if I can trust this article, since it says, that the Greek losses were only one wounded and in the video they say, that there were two killed on the Averoff. The Turks managed to get all of their ships back to the port though.
Just to demonstrate the level of confidence Rear Admiral Kountouriotis had in his ability to defeat the Turkish fleet : When the Hellenic Navy liberated the islands and commenced a blockade of the Dardaneles, they captured a merchand vessel transporting coal for the supply of the Turkish fleet. Kountouriotis telegraphed the Turks, informing them that he was waiting for them to come out of the straits to engage in combat, and if their fight was on delay due to coal shortage in their fleet, he would make arrangements for the delivery of coal in order to have that fight!!!!

its hard to describe what Averof is for the Greeks, but its something like Bismark and Yamato. But much bigger. It is remember me, that the Hellenism was, is and I'm sure, they remain the rulers of the east Mediterranean Sea. The Greeks, instead of other cultures, did not build ships only to carry out soldiers and wars. Their Voyages has was not only carry trade goods, the Greek culture, technology... They was explorer and adventurer. They share their findings with other ruch cultures and come back from their journeys with new storys and findings. The Minoan, the Athenian fleet which wins many great wars, whose strategy is compulsory in the most important naval schools. Thank you for that historical informations. Can't wait to play that ship in WoWs!
I didn't see it mentioned in the video, so a little detail: During the battle of Lemnos, Kountouriwths raised the Zulu flag (yes, the one in the game) to signal to his fleet "I am engaging at full speed!"
he raised the signal Zulu, it had the meaning as they planned, "independent" action of the flagship" from the older coastal battleships which they were not to folow him but retain their original plan, in this case the battleship "Hydra" would lead the battleship line.
It's good to have these old ships preserved, the Averof, the Mikasa, the Aurora and the few others still in existence. What a great history this one has!

Something not widely known: In the First Balkan War and after the Ottoman deafeats the Turkish fleet refused to sail again out of the safety of Dardanelles. Admiral Kountouriotis radioed the Turkish naval command and taunted them. He went as far as to offer coal for their ships in order to move, '' ...but get out and fight. We are waiting''.

This has been a fascinating documentary! I am going to make a point of seeing this historic ship. I had no idea of this historical treasure, but you live and learn. Just for the record, a Turkish gentleman told me ( comment section of another video) that he hopes there is no war between our respective countries because Turkey would wipe Greece off the map. Somehow I think not and not only because of this documentary. Greece will not start any wars but will rightly defend its self. War mongering is not a Greek trait, however, it will rise to the occasion when its sovereignty is threatened as done numerous times in the past. May there be peace in the world. History should have taught humans invaluable lessons. Long live Greece and western heritage founded on ancient philosophers.
If Turkey could wipe Greece off the map like that they would have done so already. The reasons why they dont even try are multiple but can be summed to one basic truth. Many have tried wiping Greece and Greeks off the map, many times before, but they failed, cause we are still here. So to sum it up as we say here in Greece whenever we hear a threat, turkish included: "Αυτά μας τα ειπαν κι άλλοι που την είχαν πιο μεγάλη"...
Before the battle of Elli, in December 1912, Averof's engineers made a cross and donated it to admiral Kountouriotis for good luck. As the Turkish fleet appeared on the horizon, Kountouriotis told his crew, that whatever was touched by the cross they made for him, nothing could harm and that they should fear nothing. When the Turkish fleet opened fire, Kountouriotis raised the flag signaling the letter "Z", meaning that the Admiral's ship will move independently from the rest of the fleet and telegraphed to the Greek government and the rest of the fleet : "With God's help and the wishes of the King, I am sailing with unstoppable momentum against the enemy of the Nation", charging alone against the entire Turkish fleet. During both the battles of Elli and Lemnos Kountouriotis commanded the Greek fleet standing alone, outside, in Averof's weather bridge, holding with his left hand the cross, his crew gave him, against the forward side of the weather bridge of G. Averof.

Interesting to know that it was actually a Cruiser since we all grew up knowing and calling it a Battleship. Also, at the same dockside, right next to Averof there is another historic museum/ship of the Hellenic Navy named "Velos". One of the very few Fletcher-class American Destroyers still surviving afloat. Too bad all the camera angles missed it. May be in a future episode.
We filmed last summer, I think she was in Drydock. She certainly was not in Thessaloniki, because we spent a week in our apartment there before going to Athens.
Actually it is the last (acc. to the documentary) ever commissioned armoured cruiser. The class was replaced by the battlecruiser which was better armed and protected following the lessons of Tsusima. That's probably why the Italians wanted to sell it before its commission. This means that at the time of commission it was actually obsolete if you relate to the major powers of the world (GB, Germany, France). But it didn't matter. All it mattered was that it was the baddest MF in the neighbourhood and that it's crue and navy was lightyears better than the adversary (still is BTW, read the recent news ;-)
I have been twice on the ship, and both times I felt a kind of pride stepping aboard on the gangway. I was so surprised to learn of the donations (for the wooden tiles of the deck, the paints, the tugs, ...). Commodore Charalampopoulos and the crew REALLY love the ship!

1. Biggest? NO. Bigger than US-Navy as example? Think again. 2. Yes, kind of but not absolutely. They needed the help of ships from other countries who supported the Greek Revolution. Alone they couldnt defeat the ottoman and egyptians fleet. 3. Apparently yes, there is a long tradition.

@Vasileios Kons Kond I agree with both of you. You are completely right. But he had to say it on a better way, we are talking here about warships, not the merchant fleet.
On October 24 (November 6) Tenedos [Bozcaada] Island was liberated. There was a wire connecting Tenedos garisson to the Turkish HQ on the mainland. So Kountouriotis wired Ramiz Bey : "Tenedos Occupied. We await your fleet's sortie. If you lack coal I'm willing to provide"

well this definitely a story of an underdog ship pulling more than its weight in battle.Iowa probably was like damn that is one bad ass little fella glad hes on our side lol.
What an amazing Presentation ! Something to add, from from my grandfather's war stories. The Averof was so scary to the turkish sailors, that they had a nickname for it: SEYTAN PAPOR = SATAN SHIP. The Greek sailors gave it a more loving nickname: BARBA YIORGOS =UNCLE GEORGE Needless to say that any ship is only as good as its captain and crew. Koundouriotis was by style and ability the Greek Nelson.

@@yuxiangmeng7898 there is none.Georgios(Yorgos) means George.Georgios is the most common name in greece
Έλληνες είμαστε εδω;;;
@@yuxiangmeng7898 Yes indeed. Prime Minister, in exile, Georgios Papandreou came to Greece again, aboard Averof, in October 1944.
This ships deserves a place in the game because it has everything: A true heroic story, a legendary captain and it belongs to the country with the largest commercial fleet in the world! Give to the Greek people their national treasure!

@@ya7ioo Sealclubing it is!! It had non exiatent AA in 1911 configuration and no torps in 1925 configuration... 24 knots is really crappy for anything that isnt a dreadnaught... The only strength i trully see is that upper deck armor that is tier 10 equilivant... Making it god tier brauler...they could balance it by other giving him bad gun dispersion, bad torpedo protection or bad firing angles (where you either use 3 turrets or get punished by citadels while broadside). In my opinion...a brauler, identical to NC would be amazing in tier 4 or 5...after that, i find it unfair technology wise for Averof to deal with ships like Nagato, Sharnhorst, Belfast etc.
HMS Velos deserves a spot in game as well. Greece has some fantastic ships that could round out a Swedish heavy tech tree.

Being interested in military, I've always been into Mediterranean countries and their previous battles, conflicts. But this situation brings me that question, how Aegean Sea was under Turkish control for hundreads of years, if Greeks were always victorious? I ask that, I don't know the answer since I'm not into Aegean history.

I would like to see such a movie. A classic underdog style movie. Another great story worthy of a good movie is the battle of "Hill 731" during ww2. Two more stories about admiral Kountouriotis which demonstrate his daring, heroic character and his patriotism.
After the Battle of Elli the Greek goverment congratulated but also admonished the admiral because ''he exposed the most modern and valuable ship of the fleet to great danger''. He answered that ''the battleships are intented for use in battle'' and ''possible damage or destruction must not discourage us from the nessesary actions.''
In 1913 the Ottomans bought a super dreadnought which was under construction in Great Britain by Armstrong Whitworth (It was the Rio de Janeiro ordered initially for the Brazilian navy).
Legend.

@@tg1095gr International law is a matter convenience for Greece. Turkey uses the international waters in the Islands sea to perform these activities. Greece has no right other than conveniently trying to manuplate the internation law. I certainly do read and suggest you do the same. Treaty of Lausanne created a situation where all the countries could use this sea without having to involve any neighboring countries. There was minimal naval conflict within greek waters since german presence was just submarines that hunted merchants mainly after the greek capitulation and the italian navy was very busy with Britain especially after the raid of Taranto.

@@kapasvonkapas So you basicly don't understand the game mechanics.
If BBs would get secondaries as main guns it wouldn't be stronger, it would be unplayable to a single player.
In real life they were all controlled by many group of people with own rangefinders.
Different turret rotations and reload times would make the players job stupidly harder.
If a BB player spam DD with secondary then accidentally fire main guns or main turret turn away where you aim with secondaries so you can't aim in time. BBs wouldn't be stronger, they would be unplayable punchbags.
And there are already 155 mm secondaries ingame, a few 190 mm wouldn't change anything with 3km only range.
Even Mikasa in Tier 2 has 150 mm secondaries.

Just like the japanese raised the zulu flag on the Battle of Tsushima
It's good to have these old ships preserved, the Averof, the Mikasa, the Aurora and the few others still in existence. What a great history this one has!

So, All the great & powerful warships of old were destroyed! The Bismarck, The Hood, The Musashi, The Yamato, The Nevada-class, The Pennsylvania-class, all went down to their watery graves!!! But the all-mighty Chad Averof fought victoriously in 5 different wars & still stands today after a whole century of battles & conquests as a testimony to its power & glory! The most epic awe-inspiring battleship of all time by far! Hail to Hellas!!
Choose your battles wisely and you will never lose one! But aside of that, Averof is the living testimony of what happens when you give an excellent ship to a capable seaworthy crew!
Imagine that, ammo was so sparce and hard to procure from UK, that the crew never had the chance to use live ammo. Until the battle of Elli, the first time Averof engaged in battle. This was the first time Averof fired it's guns! And in the very same day and battle the Admiral judged that there is no match for them in the battlefield and they broke away from the rest of the fleet charging in blaze against the Turkish battleships....this is the way.
@@egooidios5061 Indeed! And it's a great pity they have not yet made a film or at least an anime based on this epic battle-ship. Congratulations Wargaming. You really knocked it out of the park with this one and I can't express how thankful I am to see that you did the ship justice. Well done and cheers from Greece!
So to sum it up as we say here in Greece whenever we hear a threat, turkish included:
Turkey will get a good kicking on land sea and air and they know it well

Commodore Charalampopoulos and the crew REALLY love the ship!

we want the ship in the game!! let's go Hellas!! days ago i was thinking if the ship will ever make it in this section of naval legends, and now is reailty!
this is what Bismarck tried to do, but failed.. trying to one-mans-army an entire fleet XD
Don't compare Saxons to Mongols naval wise
This production is beyond perfect !!! Even better than a documentary ! The music, the history, the facts, everything is great. Well done gentlemen !!
Quick facts:
1) Greek fleet is the biggest in the world.
2) Even in the 1800s smaller Greek ships won the Ottomans.
3) According Peter Throckmorton of Nova University, Florida, USA, the design of traditional Greek boats have Ancient Greek Origin, can be traced and has been evolved for 3000 years...
1. Biggest?
@@matzis1182 The guy meant the biggest merchant fleet, which is true, at least in capacity, though for sheer number of ships i think Greece fares second right after Japan.
@Vasileios Kons Kond I agree with both of you. You are completely right. But he had to say it on a better way, we are talking here about warships, not the merchant fleet.

Thank you WG !!! Very good job on this history marathon !!! Thank you for honouring this ship and Greek history!!! I am proud to say that i plotted the passage plan of Georgios Averof in 2017 for her voyage to Thessaloniki. This video is very special for me as my grandfather served on this ship as an officer under the command of Rear Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis!!! Great job on sharing the naval history of so many countries. We all Greeks hope to see really soon this Naval Legend brought to life in the game and especially the Hellenic Navy personel and officers of the Hellenic Merchant Navy who play this game. I would like to end my post with the great words of the Rear Admiral sailing to meet the Turkish fleet «Με την δύναμιν του Θεού και τας ευχάς του Βασιλέως και εν ονόματι του Δικαίου πλέω μεθ‘ ορμής ακαθέκτου και με την πεποίθησιν της νίκης εναντίον του εχθρού του γένους» ...
which means : With the sthength provided by God and with the wishes of the King in the name of justice, I sail fiercly towards the enemy and with the intention to emerge victorious over the enemy of our race!!!!
thanks to World of Warships a mini documentary have created about the most famous ship of the Greek navy . Well done guys
On October 24 (November 6) Tenedos [Bozcaada] Island was liberated.
There was a wire connecting Tenedos garisson to the Turkish HQ on the mainland.
So Kountouriotis wired Ramiz Bey :
"Tenedos Occupied. We await your fleet's sortie. If you lack coal I'm willing to provide"
Greek navy since 1821 never never surrender and never defeted....!!!!

It's our honour to present this legendary ship
Bring it to mobile version too!!
As a Greek thanks to all these men who died liberating the Greek civilazation in Turkey
Also as a Greek i'm proud that my country's military history is presented on a game
Proud to be Greek
Proud for our legendary story
Proud for our nation
Proud for Greece

As both a Greek patriot and student of history, I can say that they've done our nation's flagship justice with this one. I am always proud to see Averof whenever I find myself in Faliro, and seeing her get this wonderful attention after her restoration makes me even more proud.
Also, WG, premium ship now.
I expected to see you here
Message wargaming on their website they generally respond and ask them to make it a premium!
well this definitely a story of an underdog ship pulling more than its weight in battle.Iowa probably was like damn that is one bad ass little fella glad hes on our side lol.
As a Greek person this makes me really proud. Thank you so much WG
46 people hate awesome ships that are cooler than they will ever be.
Maybe is the grandson of the Turk who was hidden in the Dardanelles😁
What an amazing Presentation !
Something to add, from from my grandfather's war stories. The Averof was so scary to the turkish sailors, that they had a nickname for it: SEYTAN PAPOR = SATAN SHIP. The Greek sailors gave it a more loving nickname: BARBA YIORGOS =UNCLE GEORGE
Needless to say that any ship is only as good as its captain and crew. Koundouriotis was by style and ability the Greek Nelson.
Add this legendary ship in game plz!!! Its OP! I am waiting for years for this ship to get in game!
