Why I May Never Buy Another Car From Carvana - My Carvana Experience

  • Buying a car through Carvana was the easiest vehicle purchase I’ve ever made. Until it wasn’t. The process is simple enough, but some of the headaches may not be worth the “convenience.”

Oh that's an epic line 'Going broke can get kind of expensive'. I have a relative who bought a used car at some local dealer in Jacksonville FL with an insane high APR, likely due to weak credit. The total cost of the car by the end of the loan long, long loan was going to be so many thousands more than the 10k sale price that my mom offered to buy the car for her out right now. That interest rate would have run her and her husband dry.

I laughed for 5 minutes about the raw dog handshake in 2022! That was hilarious!! I APPRECIATE the video. I'm making my first purchase from Carvana but they claim they can't deliver the automobile so I have to drive 2 hours to pick it up. Like you, this was an impulse buy, but I truly needed a 2nd 'round town because the gas is just too expensive for an SUV. I was already delayed for the sale due to the tint being over the legal limits. Carvana stated they would remove the tint since it would not pass inspection. I'm praying that is done correctly!! I will let you know how it all went afterwards if you'd like.
I will try to video as much as possible. Thanks for all the helpful info!! Raw dog handshake!!! Hysterical! 😂

Carvana was an absolute SHITE experience for me as well. Trade in process seemed to go without a hitch - after ordering vehicle number 1 - it was delayed 4 times for delivery. The last delivery day came and they called at 9am saying we're on the way. 10 minutes later they called and said "car won't crank....battery is new so we don't know what's wrong. It'll be at least 2 more weeks". I canceled that order and found a different one. Placed the order - another 4 delayed delivery dates came and went. After the last delivery date passed, I got a phone call from the finance company that I purchased by trade in from (VW Beetle) asking if the VW had been stolen. When I said no, they informed me that it had been listed for sale via Carvana! They didn't even have possession of the trade at this point nor did they have the title. When I called Carvana I was informed that they had no knowledge of this (of course not). I then asked where my car was at this point in the shipping process and was told that it was in Naples Florida. I live in Georgia. It was coming from Arizona. I was then told that it would be in Georgia in 2 days. 2 days later I received a call stating that the delivery was AGAIN delayed - this time it was because they didn't know the physical location of the car nor did they have a way of locating it until it arrived at one of their many "processing centers". So - my Lexus which was supposedly in Florida was in fact M.I.A. It was at this point that I called my finance company on a conference call to have them ask Carvana why they had already listed my trade on their site as being for sale. They attempted to deny that they had but soon thereafter they admitted saying that it was to facilitate a faster turn around time. Maybe this is why people are having so many title / registration issues. Curious. It was at this point that I told Carvana to stuff it up their tailpipe and went to a local BMW dealer. I purchased a 2018 BMW X3 for the same asking price as a 2014 Lexus RX 350 - at 5% APR vs Carvana's 14.5% APR. No down payment vs Carvana wanting $1k down. The BMW also still had the factory warranty left as well as a 3 year BMW service and maintenance plan. I guess what I'm saying is that Carvana is crap and you can find MUCH better deals at a traditional brick and mortar dealership.

I really enjoyed this honest review of Carvana. You presented it fairly (both sides) and I appreciated that. Was glad that they made most of it right with you via the warranty but you're spot on about what they don't tell/show you ahead of time. If anything, I think your strongest message that I got was to do your due diligence and check it out COMPLETELY! Finally, my husband is a truck driver so I really appreciated your comments about not taking it out on the driver. I think it's aged my husband 20 years. LOL

I will add an experience with Carvana. I used them to sell my car. I did not want to deal with strangers coming to look at my car and the price close to $40K meant most wouldn't be able to buy it, headaches carrying to banks letting them appraise it etc. Gave Carvana a chance unseen to purchase. They offered $5K more for it than local car dealers and the price was more than I gave for it 3 1/2 years ago.
Was an absolutely seamless experience. No lien, so the driver handed with the check, I signed a few docs, and away she went.
Now, I kept checking the website to see my car and see what they listed it for. When I looked over the pictures, I saw what others have said. Car had NO dents, dings etc, but did have small amount of road rash chips. That was not shown, but a couple of paint chips that was not on the car when they picked it up was shown. Car sold in a day. For me the selling experience could not have been better, but after seeing how they should defects, I would not purchase a car from them.

Thanks for the very clear and entertaining introduction to (for me at least) the new world of car sales. I feel good about the fact that they did OK the work that you documented needed to be done, Frankly, as an old school woman I don't think I would have been able to write up the damages quite as quickly while the driver was waiting to move on. Super interesting.
I think "...may never buy..." is just about right for this - and yet I may!
Was a Carfax report done on that car I wonder?

Thank you for this video! I was thinking of skipping the dealership and getting my teens a car from Carvana. I often wondered about the inspections and how true they are. Sometimes I’ll go to dealership websites and view cars, once I go see the car, there are more cosmetic damages than advertised -whether it is due to the light, or view of the car. I’ll stick to what I know and go buy in person. The consequence of that is being harassed by salespeople and the walk of shame (God forbid). Best of luck and I hope you’re enjoying the Flex now!

Reasonable gripe. When i bought my 2015 Outlander sport, i did a thorough check with the vin number for accidents and other concerns. No accidents and no recalls on my model. My experience with Carvana was not bad. I didnt have a strong option to shop because my car was out of service and my I worried about my fair credit forcing me to up more money for down payment to get a low monthly payment, with 11% interest rate. However nothing beats in person shopping. You wouldve saw all you saw and made a decision then and there to negotiate and not be thrown off guard. When i pay this car off and decided to get another one, without the worry of needing a car asap, yeah i would go in person.

It was literally like yours with all of the over spray, there's tape lines, paint on the passenger side headlight and the paint doesn't match in some areas and none of which was mentioned on their site before purchase. The delivery driver spoke zero english, I call Carvana and to return it and there was $1500 cash delivery fee to do so, so I had to keep it because I literally gave them what I had as a down payment, but that didn't matter anyways because the delivery driver was gone before I even got of the phone with them.

I had a very similar experience buying a 2013 BMW 328i from Carvana in July 2021. The car's front bumper was obviously repaired/repainted and the texture does not match the rest of the car which I notice every time I wash the f-ing car at least twice a week. Also have a piss poor windshield replacement, and I think the tires were potentially from 2013. It needed a new battery about 6 months in and I replaced the tires 9 months in. Overall the car has been great other than this but I'm 100% with you in Carvana's inspection being total BS. That being said, the Carfax doesn't show any accidents so my guess is that there's no chance Carvana will report a car as showing indications it was in an accident or had body work if it's not recorded anywhere.

Bought a 2015 Toyota Venza XLE (3.5L V6) with 39k for $22.7k from Carvana a month ago. Car was immaculate, and looks and runs like new. No squeaks, no blemishes, and car drives as quiet and smooth as a dream. I love this car! With tax, title, registration, and delivery ($500) the total came to around $26k. I had to pay delivery because the only available low-mileage Venzas were out of state. I traded in my 2013 Venza with 90k for $17.5k which I thought was quite reasonable. Getting the registration (plates) and title was a hassle due to Carvana's glitchy software. For example, we had to submit the insurance docs 3 times, the phone rep (from India apparently) seemed as confused as I was. The software repeatedly confirmed receipt of the insurance docs only to claim I needed to upload same in the next step of the process. Finally got everything straightened out (after hours on the phone). The registration arrived in about 2 weeks and the title arrived in a month after purchase. All in all I am happy with this purchase and would consider going with Carvana in the future.

I didn't have to do a down payment on my car. You aren't locked into any specific car until you sign paperwork. So after approval for a loan you would be able to shop around. But it's better to pick the car you really want and then get approval on that vehicle. Because if there's a big price difference between cars they may have to run your credit again to make sure you will still be approved for a bigger amount.

      @theNebrAlien  11 месяцев назад

You do have that 7 day return policy. Day 1 look it over front to back and see what they may have missed. Also, BE SURE TO CHECK ODOMETER. Make sure it matches the paperwork within a few miles. Then they will have you go online to submit pictures of damages and explanations. They have instructions on how to do that with the new car paperwork.
It takes a day or two to see if the damages are approved for repairs, so it is important to submit it quickly before the 7 day return expires. And if they decide to deny the repairs, then it's up to you to decide if you want to live with them, or return it and try again.

You do have to stick to the highest limit you're approved for. But, when you return a car you're basically starting the process over again. It doesn't have to be the same thing, nor does it have to be the same price.

Carvana (and everybody else is after me to buy my immaculate, low mileage 2019 Ranger Lariat and 2020 300S 5.7. Not interested. NEVER buy a car sight unseen. I bought a collector/special interest car several years back from a reputable dealer - no money changed hands until I drove 700 miles and inspected it - found it as advertised and I bought a certified bank check locally.

Purchased a 2014 Mercedes slk, with clean Carfax. I paid over 28,000
for my car. my entire car is covered with horrible white splotchy areas from the t. and Carvana said “not our responsibility”. They do not stand behind their auto sales. I was told my 100 day warranty was up. I took it to a car body garage and they said the paint and topcoat was not done properly. I’m working with the BBB, Attorney Generals office and most likely will have to take them to small claims court. This car has been wrecked then covered up. Why paint an entire car, if it’s not been wrecked? Their carfax reports are worthless

Took the car in for a 3rd party pre purchase inspection and it was leaking power steering fluid all over. So much for their 150 point inspection. Steering rack went out and was a 2300 dollar repair, silver rock their warranty company paid for it without hassle luckily. Won’t buy from them again. You better find all the issues with the car, they are hoping you won’t find the problems

Why would you keep that thing? To keep it because you were going on a trip is crazy. Carvana is legally responsible for that rental car. If you're not an attorney people just give up on filing law suits. 9 times out of 10 the car dealer will settle long before going to court on a case they are going to lose. They will just sell it to someone else that won't take them to court.

Carvana should absolutely be willing to lower your price they should not wait until the pandemic Rally's backup to start really caring about how they assist people, it is not a good look to only do what is necessary when it's in high demand. You should not have kept it. Yes, you'd have to rent a car to go to Texas but getting an unlimited mile rental, who cares. The bad repaint means something was repaired that you'll never know what it was. Do you have 3 inch thick bondo? Sorry....nope. If you watch car fax, you'll see the accident show up in a year. I bought a car once that obviously had a blend in the paint so knew the front end had been repaired. It took car fax 3 years for it to show up.
