    I wonder why Carmax is successful.....maybe because we see the price and if we like it, we buy, if we don't like it, we don't buy. At a dealer, who knows what the hell is going on. The constant back and forth and wasting an entire day just to end up leaving without a deal. I've spent the max 2 hours at a Carmax, try that with a dealer.

      If you go in with a mentality - I am ready to walk away today, you will be fine. I once negotiated $9000 off MSRP for 2005 Toyota Sequoia and it took me almost 6 hours. Then we had to wait 3 hours for car to be delivered from the port, because I didn’t like the stripe that dealer put on the cars on the lot.
      The way I looked at it - I was getting paid over $1500 an hour to negotiate. Works for me.

      I mean, CarMax is a dealership just as any other dealership, if you go to a regular dealership and you see the car you like, why would you have to go back and forth? Do you negotiate a gallon of milk at Walmart? You don’t, if you don’t like the price, pick a different one and keep on with live💯 that’s how I see it

    I've seen the prices on the lot at Carmax, and they are high. Carvana prices seem more fair. But I would bet that for the average unsophisticated car buyer, after the dealer gets done with you with added fees, financing, and extended warranties, people are going to pay more at the dealer than they would at Carmax or Carvana.

    Yes they are higher priced, although they also have a seven day return policy (which most dealers do not allow). The seven day return policy allows you to bring it to a service technician after you buy the car, and if you find anything, return it. So there is a tradeoff.

Nor does my local dealer even have the car I'm looking for. The real issue with CarMax is not their prices but their financing. If you pay cash or have better financing options available, I would rather go to CarMax. The reason people go to CarMax is because they're sick to hell of car dealer bs.

I was assured of the 96 point preinspection and the vehicle was all good to go. Then when I disputed the $300 document fee, they said they had to "keep the lights on". All the while 3 other salesmen were standing behind us(we were sitting down with the sales and finance guy). Then 2 weeks later, I find out both front, lower ball joints were shot...$600 repair bill after paying $8.5k
    I'll never trust a dealership ever again!!

    The set price at CarMax is usually higher because they will pay more for their cars. That being the case, they will pay more for your trade which will lower your purchase price to an acceptable range. No add on fees and other fluff that conventional dealers will try to add to your contract after you have agreed on a price making a CarMax transaction painless compared to a typical dealership.

    I have noticed in my searches that these days carvana seems to be competitive with other used listings, or better than competitive. My theory is that they are watching the market and adjusting their prices while dealers are stubbornly sticking to the profit they want to make on top of what they paid for the used car 2 months ago when its value was higher.

    I've seen many comments about the stress and hassle of a dealership. How is a dealership better for buyers that are not negotiators? I've made attempts to negotiate in the past, and I always walk in with the mindset that I'd rather walk in my shoes than leave the lot with a car that costs more than I want to pay. Most of the dealerships have salespeople who do not budge.....at least the ones I've dealt with. So....im just confused how a dealership is better.

  • @SkippyPB.
    @SkippyPB. 4 года назад +7

    The difference is that some local dealers will try to shaft you every which was possible. You will literally be in the dealer 3 hours at the minimum to negotiate $500. Carmax might be a little more , but it depends on which make. Lexus cars are the same regardless if its a traditional dealership, Carmax or Carvana. Lexus dealers do not negotiate on their used cars. Carmax and Carvana customers are willing to pay a little more for that cut throat free experience. No high pressure sales tactics. No, I have to ask my manager, just to be surrounded by the sales person and two managers. One plays the good guy while the other plays the bad. Plus they give you a 7 day return policy no questions asked. Imagine trying that at a regular dealership. not only that they will laugh at you, but they will "buy" your car back at trade in value. Your gonna get it on both ends, dry. I am no means have or had been a Carmax customer, but you see where I am getting at. BTW, your dad seems like a legit person and I wish all sales people and managers are just like him. They don't make them like that anymore.

    • @chodkowski01
      @chodkowski01 2 года назад +1

      If the Dad was a nice guy at the dealership he wouldn’t have worked there all those years. Dealerships are the same with their salesman. If you don’t produce and make them money then those salesman are gone. Your watching the retired salesman Dad video. You can bet he was different when he was a salesman trying to make his numbers at the dealership.

    I know this is probably going to cause head shakes ..
    No haggle pricing.. I like getting from Carmax because at least they are up-front.
    Trade in and sell are separate transactions.
    Price doesn't change depending on how you get the funds.
    Are their cars typically higher priced? Yes
    But I have found in buying many cars from them the over price is often the same half the amount as the cost of what repairs the car may need. I've discovered this by getting the car inspected by an independent mechanic after purchase with the 5 day return window. I then break the "punchlist" back to Carmax. They have always fixed whatever was listed, knowing I would reverse the deal if they didn't. Also the extended warranty they offer is one of the best out there.
    They fixed one car I got from them for more than what I had paid for the car.
    It was a 10 year old GM vehicle and had the AFM/DOD engine issue and also control head unit and air suspension failure.
    Within 4 months of getting the vehicle .. The extended warranty cost approx 2K .. repairs in excess of 22K.
    My cost for repairs $150. ( 3 deductibles of $50 each -- it is a deductible per repair visit not per issue )
    Again these are some of the reason I prefer to use CarMax.
    Pay a little more for piece of mind.
    Thanks for the knowledge you are sharing.

    I so disagree with you. I have ptsd from trying to work with dealerships to buy a car even before the pandemic.
    1) I did my home work. Had great finanacing from my bank, knew what my budget was, what I was willing to spend on maintenance. The salesman at the dealership up sold me to a more expensive car and then the finance office tried to get me to accept financing at a rate that was twice what I had already been qualified for. I was stuck in the finance office for 3 hours haggling, and then walked away because they refused to give me a comparable rate or accept what I already had.
    2) At a local dealership, I found a car a wanted and again I go into the finance office. They had 3 finance guys come into the office to get me to accept their rates. I left again
    3) I went to another dealership and found a car I wanted. I go to finance and they tacked onto the price of the car 6,000$ worth of warranties. I told them I didn’t want any of the warranties. I’ll buy the car without. They refused to sell me the car and I left.
    I could go on and on.
    CarMax, you go in the lot, find your car, your already qualified for financing. You don’t want extended coverage, that’s fine. You pay for the car at the price on the sales ticket. They take your financing. You buy the car and leave.

    I would respectfully disagree with the Carvana assessment based upon my personal experience. When I purchased a car from them in Jan 2019, the price they had on the vehicle I wanted was at or below all standard pricing services, and even more significantly below local dealer inventory - and no one locally had the combination of features I wanted. I completely understand the notion that you pay for the convenience, and that normally comes at a premium - but in my case, the price was *more* than competitive. I think Carvana may have a very detailed pricing and profit structure, with drastically larger margins on some cars than others. Don't know. But all I can attest to is, based on my homework, my price was no worse than at-market, with no comparable local alternatives (the closest one was 'Certified', which meant nothing to me and was something in which I had no interest in paying the corresponding premium). Thanks for your videos.

      This is why the dealers presented low internet prices on certain slightly or very used cars. I appreciate the low internet prices combined with the power to say no against all extra packages. I am the former sales manager that the dealer does not want to sell to... I am only looking for an order taker, not a questionable salesperson and/or finance person who is willing to upsell and/or falsify information.

    I also agree with some of the posts here, In my area I only have the choice of buy here pay here lots that just buys the cars from Auction and then puts then on their lot at a retail price. If I go to a dealership they add a ton of dealer fees ( and I don't care what you say they will NOT take them off the bill, period) So the car I was looking for was at a dealership,, Now even at the dealership they only change the oil and resell the car,, the car I was interested in had a broken windshield, ripped seats and a hesitation.. (AT a dealership) he tried to pull old school,, come in and we'll chat about it.. NO

    I purchased a 2014 Mustang from Carvana in February 2020 and got a GREAT price!!! I shopped dealers for 3 months trying to find the right car at the right price. So I knew the market and what dealers were pricing them at. I got tired of shopping at dealers and their tricks to get you into their store with cars that either weren't there or were not what they said they were when I got there. I had been ignoring the Carvana cars in my Internet searches, but one came up that had everything I was looking for and I decided to give Carvana a try and I'm really happy I did. It was a hassle free online purchase and delivery by truck to my location. They let me test drive it before I signed the papers and then I had 7 days to drive it and return it for any reason fro a full refund. I decoded to keep the car even though there were a couple of issues I had found and opened a warranty case. Carvana fixed both issues(cosmetic and oxygen sensor) after the sale for a total of just under $2000 under their free initial warranty. If I had bought from a dealer, they would have told me, "So Sorry but not our problem, you bought the car as is". I have purchased a lot of cars form dealers, both .new and used over my 65 years, so I have some experience. Carvana in my opinion, for the car I purchased, turned out better then I expected. I would buy from them again. BTW, I did shop at Carmax and I did think their prices were a little higher, so you are right on Carmax.

    Last week, June 15th I sold my 2019 Buick Encore to Carmax for $3,000 more than I paid for it brand new. I traded it for a 32,000 mile 2018 Subaru Outback. After scouring the internet and dealerships within500 miles from my home for a 2018 Subaru Outback, I only found very high mileage or rebuilt engines at the same price or $2;000+ more than I paid for it at Carmax. In addition, I was very pleased with the ease of selling and buying a car and, their willingness to help me find the car that best suited my needs. The car I picked had a minor but noticeable dent and scratch. Carmax will repair the damage and to top it off they will provide a loaner car while they perform the repair. The 3rd party mechanic that checked the Outbac for health, gave it a 100% passing score. Not only did I have a great convenient, no pressure experience, I sold my Buick Encore at a great price, and purchased a great car that cost the same or less than any dealer within500 miles from my home.

    They are not “higher” once the dealer ship comes at you with the first out the door price. If Carvana and CarMax are so bad with their prices why don’t dealerships stop this nonsense haggling and encourage people to shop with them by being more transparent with their prices. I can haggle sure, but not everyone.
    Say a car is advertised as 35k on carvana, a dealer ship may have it for 33-34k but once all said and done they wana charge you 37-39k for it, so now you aren’t even haggling with them starting at lower or even the same price as carvana, but 2-4K more you gota take into account now when haggling.

I kept searching on the internet for the car I wanted and Carvana’s prices were similar to other dealers. At the end I purchased from an AutoNation dealership because they had a very low mileage one. On the other hand I sold my car to Carvana. I went to two dealerships and they could not beat the price. Easiest car sell I ever made.

    TRUE CAR ONLY GIVES YOU THE AVERAGE OF WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN PAYING. DO NOT KID YOURSELF IT IS VERY HARD TO GET A GOOD DEAL ON A CAR. NEVER TELL THEM YOU WANT TO PAY CASH. NEVER WORK FOR A PAYMENT, ALWAYS WORK ON THE TOTAL PRICE OF THE CAR. THEY LIKE TO FIND OUT WHAT PAYMENT YOU LIKE AND THEN JUST BUMP THE PAYMENT OUT TO 72 MONTHS ECT. MOST PEOPLE OVER PAY FOR THEIR CAR, THEN WHEN YOU GO TRADE IN ON A NEW ONE, THEY END UP FURTHER AND FURTHER UPSIDE DOWN. ALWAYS KNOW WHAT YOUR BANK AND OR CREDIT UNION'S INTEREST RATE WOULD BE. A DEALERSHIP WILL LIE TO YOU AND TELL YOU THAT A HIGHER INTEREST RATE, IS BEST THEY CAN DO. THEY WILL LIE TO YOU ABOUT THE $400 OR SO DOCUMENTATION FEE. IT IS PURE PROFIT. NEVER BUY ADD ON'S THROUGH A DEALERSHIP. YOU WILL PAY WAY TO MUCH MONEY. THEY LIKE TO FIND A PAYMENT THAT YOU LIKE AT 60 MONTHS, SO WHEN THEY GET YOU IN THE BACK THEY CAN SELL YOU MORE STUFF. TAKE YOUR TIME, YOU CAN DO A LOT OF SHOPPING AND COMPARING ONLINE. DO NOT GO INTO A DEALERSHIP, IF YOU CAN NOT SAY NO. THEY DRAG OUT THE DEAL AND TRY TO WEAR YOU DOWN.

    1. I have always thought buying certified used was better than buying new. Any thoughts on CPO cars?
    2. Is the consumer better off buying a used car from an independent car dealer than a franchised car dealer?
    3. Where is the best place to buy extended warranties?
    4. Should I take the dealer financing, even if it through my local bank or credit union?
    5. If I buy from a large dealer, can I pay their shop to check out my car, or am I always better going to an independent mechanic?
    6. What about asking a dealer to let me purchase a used car they can't floor plan because of age or mileage. I will offer to pay more than their wholesaler. Would dealers take me up on this offer?
    Thanks again.

    Many dealers acquire their cars through auctions. Is there a way (using Vin#) to search to determine what the dealer paid and offer slightly more (to include preparation costs)? or will dealers accept deals below their costs if business is down?

    • @CarEdge
      @CarEdge  3 года назад +2

      Glenny I am not aware of anyway to search the auction database to determine how much a dealer paid for a particular car, that is not public information, nor should it be. Most dealership work on a 60 to 90 used car turn policy, which means that as they approach 90 days on the lot, dealers will entertain lower offers in order to move their aging inventory, so the longer the car has been on the lot the greater the likelihood of being able to buy it for less, even potentially at loss for dealership.

    I have to respectfully disagree. Now, perhaps pricing and what-not is based on location? I can tell you that after 6 weeks of searching, looking, and researching, we got the car we wanted at a much lower price from Carmax than we could get at any dealer around where I live. Yes, we had to pay to have it shipped to us, but we were able to go look at it, drive, and if necessary, decline the purchase - no questions, no fuss. So, yes, the convenience is key, but again, we still paid less than we would have if we bought local. And we drove over 100 miles to look at cars. In the end, Carmax had what we wanted at a price that was comparable to market value, and less than what we could find locally at a dealer.
