Pro tip buy the car, get a 3rd party mechanic to find all the issues, and carmax fixes "most of them" as long as you highlight the item in the written guarantee

Great video. I used to work at Carmax as a Lead Inventory Associate, so I can't speak for the sales side of things, but I can speak for the vehicle inspection and QC side of things since that was my main job. Most cars Carmax buys are former rentals or fleet from auctions houses, and a few from the vehicles sold by customers if they weren't shitboxes. They tend to be low mileage and have minor cosmetic damage. However, if a vehicle did need to be repaired for something more than minor damage, the process was iffy at best. Body work isnt the best and paint usually results in really bad over spray or orange peel. If the plastics inside the vehicle are damaged from UV or age (dash, radio screens, etc) they will not be repaired/replaced. Carmax also will not tell you if they vehicle had cigarette odor prior to being inspected/sold. Loaner vehicles for customers getting their vehicles serviced are comprised of front lot vehicles, so a lot of times we would get cars back smelling like weed or cigarettes and we would just send them to get detailed before going back on the lot. When I left Carmax in 2021, corporate was also changing inspections and QC procedures to make them more lenient with the biggest change being dents and scratches were allowed to be much larger before they would get a repair order done on them. If you see damage on a vehicle you want to buy, point it out to the sales associate and tell them you want it fixed. Carmax has two categories of vehicles they sell, used and valumax. Valumax cars were the cars with mileage above 100k or above ten years old in decent cosmetic shape. They tend to sell for much cheaper than the "used" cars and sales associates probably wont mention them to you at first, but are also held to a lower quality standard, so do with that info what you will.
With all that said, most cars sold by Carmax are good quality vehicles, but I would strongly suggest anyone planning to buy at Carmax to take the car on a 24 hour test drive (yes Carmax offers that) on a Saturday so you can keep the car until Monday. This gives you time to take the vehicle to get a pre-purchase inspection done and get a good feel for the vehicle. I heard a story of a customer that took a Jaguar for a 24 hour test drive and came back with a 20k repair estimate to fix everything wrong on the car that Carmax had said it replaced or fixed. Your mileage will vary on that.
Personally, I will use Carmax to shop for a vehicle when the time comes and am confident in their quality, just need to be cautious as with every other dealership.

We bought two 2006 Chevy Suburbans that each had 30 K at Carmax in 2006. Both were 45% off new 2006 models. We still drive one 17 years later, and the other had 15 years of driving. Both have 200 k now

I have been looking through their cars for a few months now and while they do have an amazing selection, nearly every car i was interested in was 4k to 8k over fair market value and the vast majority had been in accidents.

The whole “just sold that car” crap happened to me yesterday…Car was listed for $20K. I was pushed new cars, told I couldn’t use my bank financing, then when I wouldn’t budge they said they’d accept it but they kept trying to beat it with their financing (they couldn’t). FINALLY got to test drive the used car but of course by the time they printed the estimate page, they added $6K. I showed them their website and asked if the VIN was the same as the car they had advertised for $20K. I’m 99.99% sure it was (even the mileage was super close to the number online)…but the guy lied and was like “uhh I think my son sold that car this morning.” Like what? 🤣

I really think used cars are still too expensive, I am purchasing a 2024 Honda HRV from Superior Honda - Omaha - cheaper then many of the used cars on these websites. I get it that its really based on what you are looking for , but CarMax has used HRV’s that are just as much as the one I am paying for that’s new.

I really appreciate the time you put into making this video. I've had 2 co-workers say their purchase at CarMax was hassle free and no pressure. I need a used car within the next few months and I was dreading having to deal with a dealership which was why I was putting it off. I believe I'll go down to my local CarMax lot to look around.

Good video but I purchased two vehicles from Carmax a 2018 and a 2021 and had to battle with them to fix them. The problem was not that they were unwilling to repair but the fact that they cut corners every single time and did it wrong. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. The 30 day return works but what they won’t tell is that if you have no other method of transportation and the loan for the vehicle that you are returning is showing on your credit it is hard to get a second loan some where else. In addition to all of the dealings with your insurance, registration and so on. Both of my vehicles were not inspected, they had break issues, interior damage, and one of them was damaged during transport. So if you can afford to spend time at the shop, or dealing with cheap loaners and the hustle to get your car right then Carmax is the place for you.

I’m on my third Carmax vehicle.. I’ve always felt that Carmax is the easiest place to buy a car in America. The website search feature alone makes finding what you want a breeze. You do pay a slight premium for their service but typically the vehicles are low mileage (under 85,000 miles) and are well appointed as far as trim levels. They are actually friendly (not always knowledgeable about specific vehicles) and are genuinely there to help you through the process. They do it every day, all day long. I found what I wanted and spent $299 to have it shipped. Was driving it home in less than a week.

I found the car I wanted on the Carmaxx website. I paid the transfer fee to ship from North Carolina to Texas. While in the office finalizing the sale, I was hit with, “we have a problem”. I was told that even though the car was 2 years old, it had never been titled and therefore was considered a new car. And Carmaxx doesn’t sell new cars in Texas. After 30 minutes of staff running around making phone calls I was asked would I still buy the car if they can work it out. I agreed and walked out with a purchased car with only 150 miles on it and with a brand new car manufacturer warranty that started the date of the sale. I was never told how they got around the problem and never asked.

Three thumbs up! It is nice to come across a straight up truth video like this. Young folks should heed your advice. Be smart, not impulsive. Be patient a wait it out when you can , but beware you might lose that car while you are holding out. Carmaxs strength is that they do spruce up their cars prior to selling. Detailing, oil and filter and other fluid/filter changes, new tires even. 30 day warrantee is a BIG thing. A lot of used dealers will sell you crap as is and just laugh at you when you come back two weeks later with a broke down car.

Just before Covid actually started I decided to move overseas for an unspecified amount of time. So I chose to sell my vehicle which was going on five years old. It had 34000 miles. Still looked new. And I had all maintenance records.
I checked Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds.
I lived in a gated community. So I put an ad in the clubhouse. After I checked Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds.
I went to Carmax for a proposal. They actually offered me a fair price. Not very far off from the prices I found on Kelley and Edmonds. I told Carmax I would think about it.
A couple of days later someone from my development called me. He wanted to buy a vehicle for his granddaughter. So he came over with her.
She test drove the vehicle and he said she liked it. He didn’t agree with the price I wanted for a private owner sale. He actually offered me $2000 less than Carmax offered to buy it. And he said he wasn’t paying anymore than what he is offering me.
I showed him the Carmax offer. And said if he wanted to pay that right now I would sell him the vehicle. He said he’s not paying that amount for a used vehicle. And why won’t I sell it to him.
I said because I’m getting $2000 more selling it to Carmax. He left not happy. And still couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t sell it to him lol.
I did sell it to Carmax.

A new car dealer did the 20:33 thing to me, although it didn't work.
I was looking to buy a SPECIFIC NEW CAR (manual transmission), and made it clear to them, and I was waiting for THAT CAR (with a known VIN) to show up.
One of the sales persons told me it was there and to come look at it. I didn't believe that idiot, so contacted the manager and he said it wasn't there yet, so I explicitly told him I'm not dealing with THAT salesman. I ended up dealing with a different sales person.

I just bought a 2022 Tacoma with Carmax, I pick it up this week. I have poor credit, paid off all my debts but due to previous mistakes, it's gotta be rebuilt up now. Carmax approved me at 12% when other lenders like Carvana, Capital one, and Ally wouldn't even approve me or would give me 25% interest rates. Overall, I think it's not a bad rate given my cirumstances. You can always refinance later down the road. I'm happy to see positive things from everything I read. I did the express pickup, have a couple concerns about the vehicle from the pictures but hopefully it's nothing, gonna go check it out and hopefully drive home. thanks for the video!

Bought a 2 year old Lexus from Carmax in 2018. It had 25k on it. Roughly the same price as a similar used vehicle ftom nearby car dealerships. They did a shit job of cleaning and detailing it but also sent me a check for $250 to get that taken care of elsewhere which I did. The entire process was painless and streamlined compared to the car dealership model which hasn't changed for close to a century. The car has been fantastic thus far. Id go back to Carmax in a heartbeat. Almost all dealerships suck.

Extremely helpful. I'm grateful for your content. The one thing that bugs me most about Carmax is there's no free CarFax report posted on their website, only AutoCheck, which is completely useless unless you only want to know if the car's registration was kept up. I want to see regular oil changes and servicing according to mfg's recommendations at the very minimum. I want to see what work was done when it was in for servicing. Were the tires rotated regularly? I want to see that the car was serviced at the dealership and not WalMart!. Though not infallible, a detailed CarFax can be a good indicator of what sort of owner that car previously had and if they were meticulous or sloppy. I won't argue that Carmax's inspection is thorough but what are they trying to hide by not providing CarFax?

Auto check is no different than Car fax--it is all a joke. I worked there and they are both the same. Either one only knows what is reported by insurance or police. Carfax reports can be changed by the seller by paying a fee--buyer beware.

Many times you'll find issues on Autocheck that haven't been reported to Carfax. Best practice is to spend the $ yourself and pull both - $80 could save you thousands in the future.

      @theNebrAlien  Год назад +2

Hello! My personal opinion is that as long as a car has been inspected and has a clean bill of health then it is not something to worry about. Especially if you get an extended warranty. BUT... There is truth to cars that were once rentals, fleet, or had liens on them, being a lower quality vehicle. People tend to take care of things that are theirs, and abuse what isn't. These cars are definitely abused a lot more than a car that had a single owner.

I went to the local Honda dealer to look at a used Ridgeline that was on their website. They showed it to me, let me drive it and when I made an offer it was suddenly unavailable due to a factory stop-sale regarding a wiring harness that was on backorder. Got steered toward a pilot that I ended up buying and now I am waiting for fuel injectors that are on backorder ( 2 mos so far). The point is they kept that Ridgeline on the website for two more weeks.

Great video! I’m planning on buying form CarMax next week. Question: credit was run over the phone and they approved me through Bank X for car Z. I’m skeptical of car dealerships and was worried the “approval” was just a ploy to get me in the store. Any experience with customers who ran credit over the phone? Legit?

I shopped at both a local dealer and Carmax for my Subaru. The dealer acted like they couldn’t care less about me. Carmax employees were super friendly and let me drive a whole bunch of cars. When the one I chose wasn’t available due to title issues, they worked hard again to research similar models until they found one that was a perfect fit. When I sat down to make the purchase, they showed me the monthly payment options, and the rates were actually very good. I made payments for a year and then paid off the car. It’s eight years now and I’m still happy with my choice.

I bought a 2013 Toyota Sequoia Limited with only 114k from a southern Toyota dealer. They offered me $2,200 for my trade. We ended up paying only $16k in cash well under the 20k this bluebooks for. This sale included a 90 day warranty. I wouldn't claim I got the best deal around but I definitely got a decent deal. I could have done much worse for sure. A Toyota Sequoia is a tough find. We traveled nearly 260 miles one way to buy it! I wouldn't claim our trade in was even worth much more than we got. Our 2005 Saturn Relay level III might be in decent shape but it's a 2005 gm product:) $2,200 seemed fair to be. Saved me the stress of selling.

My very first car purchase was from carmax back in 2000 for a 1995 Mustang GT. They even had it transferred from North Carolina to Tampa FL and was the only car on the car carrier by the time it got here. I LOVED my Mustang!! But then it was involved in a car fire started by another car beside it and it was a complete loss.

I was a sales guy at Car Max and I say they are honest and stand behind their cars. They pay their sales guys 160 bucks no matter what they sell. All cars pay the same. It is a shit commission and they go thru sales guys like underwear. If you contact the store before you go in the commission is cut in half. It is SHIT pay and that is the way it is. They are a bean counter organization, good for the buyer, bad for the sales guy

Already went through the pre-qualification and after watching this video am much more informed about the process. In terms of pricing, I think its a little on the high side....but given all the benefits that come with the buying process I think its worth it.
Now if only I could grind em on the interest rate or perhaps get them to buy my worn out 280,000 mile Subaru!
    Thanks again, super helpful video!

Just as an update, I did get a car from CarMax, a 2015 Hyundai Sonata with 124,000 miles on it. Its nice, a 1 owner car that was garaged most of its life. CarMax wanted ~$12,998, I put down $1,800 and have a 700+ credit score. I got the CarMax financing at 14.4%, which came to $4,700. So in total when it was all said and done my total cost out the door was $18,000!!!!
I later found out CarMax paid $7,500 for the car, that's a very bitter pill to swallow. In addition, the original vehicle I actually wanted had a bad engine. It has oil burned on the exhaust manifold, oil leaking out of the pvc vent hoses and intake tract, the coolant reservoir was empty and full of oil residue. They offered to flush the coolant and change out the reservoir. That engine is clearly hurt, it's a shame to know they are going to put that car back out on the lot. The second car had a dead battery, flat spare tire and when they finally did get it running the steering was super twitchy and the abs and traction control lights would randomly flash on and off. I don't think their inspection process is followed very well. On the car I finally did get, they left the lock box in the back seat and I found a tracker in the map pocket behind the drivers seat. Oh and they claimed to have changed the wiper blades, they changed the drivers side only. Coolant is over-filled as well as the oil so their techs obviously just don't care. I would never go back honestly, I just want to get this car paid off. I will honestly go through a dealer next time and go for a certified pre-owned car. The CarMax experience is very stiff, you go through the procedure and there is no deviation from that routine just as explained in this video. Oh ya there is no negotiating on financing either. The price is the price, you don't like it, well you know where the door is. The sales people get paid a fixed amount and a fixed bonus for every car they sell regardless of price. They have zero incentive to negotiate anything with you. Not even sure I would call them salesman as they are not actually selling you anything in as much as they are more like stewards walking you through a process. With all that said, it wasn't a bad experience, my steward was a nice guy and walked me through the deal from beginning to end. The staff were friendly and pleasant. I drove in with a car on its last legs at 270,000 miles and beat to death and they still gave me a few hundred for it. I had no choice but to accept the deal I was dealt and in the end I was able to drive away in a pretty nice used car. That's my CarMax story, not bad but certainly not great. The financing stung pretty bad, so I would recommend you bring your own money to the table and maybe even a mechanic friend just to poke around the engine bay and to go on the ride along...

Get the vehicle checked out by a qualified mechanic. If the mechanic doesn’t find any major problems why purchase a maintenance agreement for 2 or 3 thousand dollars? If nothing major happens to the car you’ve wasted a few thousand dollars. If something does happen will the cost of repairs be greater than the cost of the maintenance agreement?
I’m retired and financially comfortable. I bought a Jeep Wrangler from Carmax. As noted, in the video, the Jeep was overpriced and my potential trade vehicle was significantly under valued.
I assumed I could have the vehicle for 24 hours to check it out. I was told they’d changed their policy and my test drive would be limited to 24 minutes. Seriously, I’m not making that up. They did confirm I had 30 days return the vehicle for a full refund.
I kept my trade in vehicle and disposed of it myself. I wrote a check for the Jeep. My grandson is a qualified mechanic. He checked the Jeep out from bumper to bumper. It was a 2015 Jeep Wrangler that was in like new condition inside and out. Carmax did replace all 5 tires with new ones. The Jeep had 57300 miles one it and it had been locally own. Carmax had its maintenance record. The previous owner changed the oil every 4000. I’ve had the Jeep for a little over a year. I’m very satisfied with it.
I can only say my experience with Carmax was weird to say the least. They misrepresented their advertised 24 hour test drive. They grossly, as in a full $10,000, undervalued the vehicle I was going to trade.
All that noted, I have no issues with the Jeep I bought. It’s a quality vehicle.

Thank you for a very valuable and honest review of CarMax and their warranty. I have purchased 2 vehicles with them and I had a great experience. I was actually going to buy another car today but I didn’t have the additional down payment required. So you are saying that I can not use my “trade-in” as a down payment (as in to be applied to the purchase price)? So how is that done then?

Great video - one thing I am wondering. I transferred a vehicle for $600 and was told that it would arrive at a certain date but it arrived 7 days earlier this week. My sales rep called and asked when I would be ready for an appointment. I stated the initial day of arrival. This is my 4th transfer in 2 months (first one was totaled, second one sold, third damaged). When picking up my car I want to add a bit of time between my hard credit inquiries. (bought a car in dec and experienced a total loss same week). So on my appointment set for this week - do you think I can reschedule my appointment for exactly 7 days later? I just do not want this car sold on me again after now paying the transfer and it arrived a bit sooner than I would have liked. Thanks!

    • @theNebrAlien
      @theNebrAlien  Год назад +1

Honestly not picking the car up in the time frame they give you is a risk if you paid for a transfer. Call and ask if they will do an extension, being that it showed up earlier than you anticipated, just tell them you scheduled a day in advance to look at the car based on the information they told you in the first place. That might work, but they may also try to stick you with the standard reservation limit.

I've sold a truck to Carmax and I have purchased a truck from Carmax. In my situation the process price on both transactions were fair and hassle free. We ended up at Carmax after shopping around at several dealerships and haggling down to the point where the dealerships stood firm and allowed me to walk. Like anything else you should always shop around when purchasing a new vehicle to get the best deal you can in my situation the deal at Carmax was a little better than a few similar deals at traditional dealerships and comparing the same truck and trim levels.

    • @jamess3532

@@yartriesthis Buying from Carmax was based on them having the exact vehicle I needed at a competitive price. Selling I shopped my truck around and Carmax offered me the most money for it. They beat the lowest offer by almost 6K and the next best offer was over 1K less than what Carmax had offered. You always need to shop around. I wouldn't just automatically go to Carmax and purchase a car. I don't do extended warranties through dealerships.
