Selling a Car to CarMax | Online Quote: Will CarMax Pay what they Offered?

  • Our 2007 INFINITI M35X is for sale, and like many of you, I don't want the hassle of dealing with tire-kickers, selling a car online. Due to the current new car shortage, there is a strong market for used vehicles, so I felt that the time was right.
    I've never dealt with CarMax (or any other modern online car dealer) before. I got an online offer for my car that was higher than I expected, but I knew that CarMax's in-person evaluation and the vehicle's history information could impact the final offer I received. So I took my car to CarMax to see if the online offer was for real...
    Let me know what YOU think, and feel free to share your CarMax or online car selling stories below!
    Be good, be well and be safe! Thanks for watching!

    Those “inspections” the guy was saying they do are a huge lie. I had an Audi S5 transferred from Colorado to California and was “inspected” when it left Colorado and “inspected” when it arrived to my CarMax in California. 2 days after it arrived I went to test drive it and when they pulled up the car it was apparent they did not inspect anything.
    The front bumper was unclipped and hanging from the passenger side, the rear bumper had an aftermarket diffuser that was cracked installed on it, the side skirts were missing chunks as if it were hit by another car or the curb, the volume knob for the stereo was broken and would fall off if you touched it, the inside trim had ebay carbon fiber pieces glued on them, the cup holder had an ebay RS5 carbon trim glued to it, the hood was misaligned as it had a big gap between the driver front fender and the passenger side fender was rubbing with the hood and it had removed its paint on both pieces and the whole rear axle was shifted over to the driver side a few inches as you can see and feel the rear driver wheel having an inch gap between the fender and the tire and the passenger side rear wheel was around 4 inches from the fender.
    After I pointed out all these things that were not disclosed in the advertisement of the car, they will wanted to offer me $3000 less for my trade in because it needed new tires and it had an exhaust on it. I had disclosed all that about my trade in on the online quote but they wouldn’t move on the Audi’s price at all.
    I know that people make mistakes but there were some really noticeable issues with this car that any technician would notice during an inspection and they failed to report it twice.

      Here is an interesting conversation I had with a bank teller at Wells Fargo the other day. I went to deposit the "draft" check from CarMax and the teller asks me if I was aware of the 48 hour hold on the check. I told her "yes" I was aware of it. She said that some people that come into the bank with a CarMax check were surprised when she told then about the 48 hour hold. I guess that some people were not being told this?

    Did they put it on lift for inspection? Do they do smog check on their cars for sale? Do they need to make sure cars they buy have emission monitoring completed and would / did pass smog check? Meaning who is responsible for smog - seller, carmax, or buyer?

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  2 года назад

      Derek, all great questions and I will answer what I can. They did not put my car on a lift but they looked under it. Given the age and condition of my vehicle, I don’t think they cared as much as they would have for a newer vehicle. I would imagine that they have to guarantee that every vehicle they sell will pass state emissions inspections, so I would say it is their responsibility. Ask your local Carmax, I’m sure they would be happy to fill in all the details. Thanks for commenting!

      When I did the online condition report I was pretty honest. There were some fender scuffs and one small dent where the paint was compromised, plus all four wheels had curb rash. Other than that everything was very clean. The appraiser didn’t ask me any questions, but they had their own list that they followed. He probably took 20 minutes looking inside and outside the car. If a car still has a loan do they give you the full amount value to pay off the loan or do they give you the difference if you have positive equity and they take care of the rest.

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Год назад

      @Favian Figueroa - great question! I think you got it correct...the bank is the owner of the vehicle, and CarMax would have to pay it off on your behalf, and you get to keep the difference. Bit if you owed more than CarMax was willing to pay then you'd have to come up with the difference at the settlement table.

    Very informative video.
    Something similar happened last year with the title to my father's Corvette when he passed away and my mother had the title changed to her name. Somehow the DMV listed the title to the car as having 70,000 miles when it really had 27,000 miles on the car.
    The process for the DMV to correct the mistake involved having a DMV special investigator come out in person to my mother's house where the car was garaged and perform an inspection of the car and then investigate the history of the car and all records associated with it to determine that the miles indicated on the car were accurate.
    It was a pretty involved process but the DMV investigator was really polite and helpful with everything. I was under the impression that these mistakes happen more often with the DMV than you would realize.

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  2 года назад

      @Red Herring - yes, that sounds amazingly similar. I’m glad they got it sorted out. I am not the least bit surprised that this type of DMV error happens frequently, and I am glad they take odometer differences seriously.

      @@MikeFyxdt well the apologized for giving me a quote on Honda pilot which is pretty good considering I’ve never owned a Honda pilot. They also told me that the $600 offered was a typo as it should’ve been 6000. They have done me wrong and if I could be bothered, I would take them to small claims court for my shipping fee.
      I’m so angry with their ineptitude that when I take my test drive, I think I’m just going to pull over to the side of the road and put a brick on the Excelerator until the engine blows. Then I will just drive home in my own truck and go to the regular Toyota dealer , I probably won’t end up blowing the engine, but it sure would feel good. They at least, in my case I really screwed up.

      @@MikeFyxdt Oh yes.. one more thing if I can vent just a little more. If Carmax gave me an offer of $7400 and it expires how can my next offer go down to $6000? What could’ve changed in their algorithm ticket account for that? If Carmax stands by their offer why isn’t the offer of $7400 the one they should be still offering. Is that odd? I shouldn’t have had to even complete a second offer form with pictures, of course. So basically I’ve had four different offers. It just seems to me that if they stick by their offer they should be sticking by the $7400 offer? How many times can they? Have you complete an online offer form. Still waiting for the truck to get here but I am going to pursue that question. So they stick by their offer as long as it’s the lowest one.. I really believe I’m the only one in the whole world who said this much difficulty with Carmax. I’m not surprised, because I tend to have a dark cloud hanging over me when it comes to luck. I hope all of you have a great day.

      @@MikeFyxdt I actually left out an additional offer of $7000. I did talk to a very pleasant individual today who basically said it’s the market, supply and demand etc which were the reason my offers dropped $1400 in four increments in a month disregarding the “typo” and an offer on a MV I don’t own. This experience hasn’t jaded me anymore than car deals in general have over the past 45 years. Everyone is out to burn you so every so often they’re going to be successful. Ain’t no big thing really and will only bother me until I have to start taking quotes for a home addition. No worries to dwell on.

    You should NEVER get an online price
    Why because there is nothing for you to gain ,they want to see the the car anyway if it is not the way you described it then you will get less.
    If the car is better they will not give you more ,some sellers are more honest then they should ,so go and get a appraisal in person and then you can decide what you want to do.

      I see your logic! I think the online quote is a good starting point. For me, I had no idea whatsoever what the car was worth, or what someone was actually willing to pay. The online quote was easy, and the in-person experience went well, so my luck was good!

    My experience with Carmax was very different. I was potentially trading in my car for a Jeep. I had a 2013 Mazda CX-5 bought new, with tech package, navigation, blind side warning etc, with 48000 miles. The car was always garaged. KBB indicated my trade value was $15000-17000. Carmax offer $5000. I kept my car.
    A former Carmax employee said Carmax generally only offers 30% of kbb listed trade values. I paid cash for the Jeep and disposed of my car later. IMO Carmax is substantially no different than any other used car dealer, so buyer beware. Whether or not they actually do the inspections they claim they do on their cars is questionable, but they charge more for their cars for the “guarantees” the offer.
    I have no issues with the Jeep I bought from them. It’s like new inside and out, one owner, clean car fax, locally owned and obviously well taken care of and garaged by the previous owner. I probably paid about $3000 more than I would have from a traditional used car dealer, but this particular Jeep was worth it.

      Larry, thanks for lending your story to the conversation. I’m surprised at the low offer on your Mazda. Really surprised! I’m glad you were in a position to walk, and to conduct business on the jeep privately. I guess everyone’s experience will differ, and I am glad you were able to add some contrast to the comment section. 😀

      @@MikeFyxdt I’m just guessing but I suspect I acknowledged that I was paying cash when I met with the salesperson. Her first question was, “Are you going to finance or pay cash, if you find a car you want?” I acknowledged I would be paying cash. I assume that information was relayed to the person that appraised my Mazda.
      Again, I’m just guessing but I suspect the embarrassing low ball offer for my Mazda was intentional in an attempt to make up for lost profit by me not financing the car with Carmax. I assume the appraiser thought I was a senile old fool that would just give my Mazda away.
      In any event purchasing a car from Carmax wasn’t a pleasant experience, but the Jeep I bought from them was in amazingly good condition. It looks showroom new inside and out. This is my third Jeep. Buying a used Jeep requires some rather extensive knowledge about Jeeps and what to look for when you’re buying one. 2012 & 2013 Jeep Wrangler JK’s have the 3.8L engine and that engine had problems. Jeeps that have been heavily modified or have evidence of rough off roading are also problematic.
      The Jeep I bought was a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Freedom with the preferred 3.6L engine with automatic transmission, leather interior, & it’s original factory hard top. This Jeep was stock with no evidence that it has ever been off road. The mileage suggest it was somebodies second car and driven for pleasure only and was obviously garaged. As far as used Jeeps go this was a rare find and well worth paying a few thousand dollars more for it. It’s in showroom condition inside and out as well as under the hood. Carmax had put 5 new tires on it and Jeep tires are expensive. So, as far as getting a quality used car I’ll give Carmax an A+. It’s unfortunate their appraiser attempted to steal my Mazda.

      @@larrys9879 I’m glad that it all worked out with you getting your Jeep in such good condition. Any time you buy a used off-road or performance vehicle you are taking a risk, so I guess it pays to know the vehicle so you can look for signs of use/abuse. I agree that they used sales pressure and a lowball offer on the Mazda to try to help their bottom line. It sounds like at the end of the day you came out ahead! Enjoy that Jeep! 😁

      Yeah, I have no idea how they are going to resolve that, or even if they need to if they send the car to auction. It’s my fault for not reading the copy of the title when I got it… I just put it in the safe and assumed everything was good. If I had to fix it, I imagine it would take at least half a day of phone calls and letters.
      By the way, I couldn’t see all of your other comment, but the quote for $7900 in the video was for my Honda accord, not my Infiniti that I sold in this video. I didn’t record the screen session when I got the quote on the infinity, so I recorded the application process again using another car. Sorry if that was confusing!
