When I would visit Salmon, Idaho as a little kid in the ‘70s, my uncle would listen to this song over and over; it was the only 8-track he had in his truck. I will never forget it.
I stood 30 feet from Susan as she sang this. She was In New Zealand and I was working for TVNZ working on music clips in a very lowly level. She introduced herself to every technician present and made conversation with all of us individually, which was unusual as normally lower tier technicians were ignored. I've worked on a lot of clips and never ever seen such a generous expression of warmth and decency, except for that time.
Wow! I am currently obsessed with this song (not for the first time...) LA airport means a lot to me... and I'll never forget the first time I arrived in NZ from LA...
This song always will remind as l fly the first time from germany to USA to my love.... Now my love has passed away since 2018...and my good days are gone but when l hear this song l feel young again Who in corona times is still listening to this song will leave a thump up Thanks...😥😉☺😘
This is the first time in over 40 years that I've heard this song. It's been haunting my memories for a few weeks, so I decided to look it up. Glad I did. I still remember hearing it on WSM 650 out of Nashville, Tennessee as a kid. This is real country music and it's a shame that we don't hear new songs of this quality anymore.
I’ve always loved this song, and as a retired corporate pilot I flew into LAX so many times over the years. Every time I’d be at LAX that song would run through my head, over and over. Now that I’m retired it has a different meaning, when she sings. LA INTL airport, I wont see you anymore. Almost brings a tear to my eye as I had some fantastic times in and around that airport. Just memoirs now. But I still love this song.
Aside from the radio station that is on the air , you can only pick it up in the tiny town I live in . A good country music station plays good country music when its on the air . Another is not so good at all . Only one out of ten songs is a good song and the rest of it is a horrible one . Who knows what it is ? My Playlist on RUclips is my of listening to good country music .
Well i am 23 and dont even know whats in the radio these days. Music is art in my eyes, but the todays Music isnt art that often anymore, so its not music. Jetzt bin ich fertig und sehe deinen Namen - hätte ich also auch in Deutsch schreiben können :D
This song made it to #9 on the charts in 1971, but I had assumed all these years it made it to #1 ... or AT LEAST in the top 5. However, it did neither. How did this not at least make it into the top 5? Anyway, I was 6 yrs old when this song came out, however I don't remember it when it came out. Still, It brings back memories from a younger time in my life.
I couldn't agree with you more . Aside from the radio station that is on the air , you can only pick up two radio stations in the area I live in . A good country station plays when its on the air , but most of the time its off the air . The other station is not so good at all . Only one out of ten songs is a good song the rest of it . Who knows what it is ? But It ain't country so I listen to my Playlist on RUclips .
What a great song! Definitely the good old days...great video as well!! And what a voice Susan has! Not to be duplicated. OOOOHHHHH take me back too!!!
I remember hearing this song when I was a kid and I loved it and he used to sing it in my head. Funny how I still have the song going through my head periodically and today is one of those days. I thought I would search it out and here we are. Really enjoyed the video made the song even better! I hope you're all enjoying it take care!
WOW! Brings back memories of my Senior year in 1972, when our Ben Davis High School Marching Giants marched in the Rose Parade. We were the first 747 flying out of Indianapolis to L.A. New Year's week. Mom and Dad said the plane barely made the runway over I 465. lol, Dust flying up from the unfinished runway....This song brings tears to my eyes to this day, and the sweet lady that sang it. Thank you Susan..
I was 7 when I first went thru LAX in Sept 1970 - before this song came out. My mom and sister and I were on our way to Honolulu to meet our dad coming back from Viet Nam. I remember that trip so well. Flew a Delta DC 8 from ATL to LAX and United DC 8 from LAX to HNL. I remember going underground and riding on these loooong moving walkways from the Delta Terminal to the United terminal. Don't think they have these walkways anymore. The 747 had just entered service for the first time and we just missed riding on one. A year later this song came out. Was one of my favorite songs from 1970 (along with whatever the Carpenters were up to). Even at 8 years old I had to have it - and still have the 45 today. Thanks for putting this together. SOOOO many memories come back because of this song... Those were the days when you pressed the stewardess call button they came running pronto. And the airplane food was delicious - multi course hot meals - in COACH! So so long ago and a different world then.
We're flyin' to Hawaii on Monday and this and "Leavin' On A Jet Plane" has been goin' through my head for the last couple of days... Good memories of when we lead a simple life as kids... Thank You -
The music of my childhood! So many songs, so many memories! I have all of my grandma's records, and my mom's. Some of my great grandma's. I cherish them!
This song reminds me of being a kid growing up in Australia. A kid obsessed with America. I'm grown up now and I have visited the USA about 25 times, many of which included LAX. I think of this song every time.
When I was 9 my dad worked for Pan Am airways and we flew from Miami to Hawaii for $50.00 and we were on 5 different 747s. When we boarded the plane my dad use to wear his pan am pin on his lapel (the days when people wore suit and tie when travelling) so the people on the aircraft didn't know who he was so they always bumped us up to first class. Flying into Los Angeles that evening I heard this song playing in my earphones and simply fell in love with this song. Just great memories from my childhood.
I was 14 and I had seen Susan Raye on hee haw singing this and fell in love with it. and it sounds as good as the first time, only if I could turn time back
bill trivett I was 5 and I remember my mama had the album and I asked her one day about a song she used to play about an airport. She went and got the album and said is this it.
This magical song accompanied my first long-distance flight in 1985. I went to Bogotá/Colombia. It was the first flight during my career - a hundreds followed. But this first flight is deeply engraved in my memories, especially with this song!
A liffedream came true when we arrived at LA International Airoport a few weeks ago; I still remember the crew tellling us we had to switch off all electronic devices for landing when I took my I-Pod for listening to this song while landing in LA - unbelievable feelings
Loved this song since I was little. Always think of it when I go to LAX, either flying or picking up someone. Love the old photos too. Thank you for posting it.
i was 8 in 1973 remember going to port richey florida to visit grandpa. heading down I-75 from dayton ohio this was my favorite song. always asked dad to turn it up when it came on. ah that great a.m. radio sound.
I dedicate this song today to the legendary Boeing 747 which is retiring this year after a 50+ year career, having entered service one year before the release of this song.

Thanks for sharing the info. June 12th is my birthday, but I didn't know the song was first performed by Susan that day in '71 on American Bandstand. I do remember hearing Susan sing it on Buck Owen's and Roy Clark's Hee Haw Show. Incidentally I saw a comment on YT from a young lady who said Susan was her grandma. My! How time slips away.
When I was in kindergarten and only went half day this song came on the radio every day at the same time. I would take my nap listening to it. Its a special song for me.
Brings back a lot of precious memories. I arrived in LA in the late 60's through LAX and lived under the landing path of LAX for 4 years. Saw the first 747 approaching LAX. This should be a background music at LAX ... wonder if officials there are aware of this song.
One of the smoothest and prettiest voices ever. And seemingly a beautiful person inside and out. I say, seemingly, because of course I never had the pleasure of meeting her.

Utterly brilliant. Such a beautiful voice. Real country music for a change. Far better than most of todays so called country music.

One of the greatest songs ever. Susan sang it perfectly.

it is the official lax song
It’s not the LAX official song. In fact, LAX commissioned a redo of the song which wasn’t as sad around 2010.
Its a beautiful song. I love the voice of susan raye.
