An American Eagle ATR-72 went in like a lawn dart in icing conditions not far from where I was living at the time.

FIRSTLY...not mentioned was the innovation propeller brake on the starboard engine allowing automous ground operations without the need for an APU '(auxiliary power unit).
Secondly...the ATR 42 was adopted by Canadian airlines operating in the Arctic and Subarctic regions of Canada by Air North and Canadian North Airlines. In those passenger, freight and combi services, they routinely operate at minus 40 C/F and colder, on ice/snow runways and on gravel airstrips!
In effect, this is a very capable and versatile STOL aircraft!
