  • ATR 42 and ATR 72 are very similar aircraft. The main difference is, of course, the length and passenger capacity. Then, there are some more subtle differences, some more important than others.
    This video is revised:
    - A small typo is corrected.
    - Crosswind limitations added.
    - Climb speeds added.

Very nice video! I bumped into this video looking for differences between ATR 72-500 and 600 for scale modeling purpouses, since scale modelers look for making their model the more accurate to the real thing as possible regarding visible details, going down to things like the amount of hydraulics panels doors. I've concluded from this video that it ain't external visual differences from 500s to 600s, not even to engine nacelles as I thought there could be.
Thank you for making and sharing it!

That is correct. The 500 and 600 are identical outside. The difference is inside.

I’m starting ATR 42 TR in a month, your videos have been immeasurably helpful as an introduction. Thank you Capt 👍 oh and just as a curiosity, I’m from the U.K, however my first flight instructor position was in Thailand a decade ago teaching foundation training for Bangkok Airways sponsored cadets. fantastic place, wonderful people.

Thank you for another beautiful and insightful video 😊 So if I understand correctly, the ATR42 is faster in cruise (230 KIAS / 300 KTAS) but slower in climb (160 KIAS), while the ATR72 is faster in climb (170 KIAS) and slower in cruise (221 KIAS / 278 KTAS)?

Hey Magnar, can you make a new episode comparing ghe difference between q-400 and atr 72? It would very appreciate for your professional opinion 😊

They are made for two different missions. The ATR 72 is a money maker. The Dash-8 is a regional jet killer.

Hey Magnar, how many pilots after you told them about the ATR 42/72 said, "My dream plane is now the ATR 42/72."? For me, it's more about the exotic destinations the ATR aircrafts fly to and it's versatility. I don't really like to fly into those big busy internationals...

Zero. Most people I interact with are already interested in the ATR. And, yes, I agree it's more fun to fly to small destinations. That's why I stick to the ATR.
