You know you are a simmer when you try to change the view angle and realise you are watching a video! I just bought this aircraft, thank you for the demo. very educational.
Funny you chose this as a demo flight. An Aurigny ATR from UK mainland to Guernsey was the flight which took me to my very first job in the UK 16 years ago 😊
About entering the weight and fuel into the FMS: if you long press the keys next to ZFW and fuel the FMS will auto populate the correct values (pulled from the MSFS weight/fuel settings). 👍
TLU stand for Travel Limitation Unit. At airspeeds higher than 185 knots range that the rudder can move is limited so that high airspeeds do not damage it. Below 180 knts you have full rudder movement.
you had the power management set to CLIMB during the entire descent, which may be why you had difficulty decelerating. apparently you leave it in CRUISE after top of climb until gear downwhere you set it back to TO.
Nice livery 😉 I need to do a little work on it though, some touch ups required, registration on the nosegear doors and need to add a little dirt and grease, but thanks for using it.
You have a fantastic 'story telling' approach to teaching. You should seriously consider a career in teaching. You have a wonderful gift, please share it with the world! Outstanding video. I always come to your channel to learn about new aircraft. Thank you for your continued hard work and perseverance.
Out of all the tutorials and live streams I have seen of the ATR 72/600, one of the best landings I have seen since release. Looking forward to a live stream in this plane from you.
I live in Guernsey 🇬🇬 fly on the ATR-72 (as a passenger of course) all the time, its perfect from Guernsey to Southampton, Guernsey to East midlands, Guernsey to Gatwick. They do everything for the island, mail etc and gers us off this very strange island
I think Start A, Start B and start a+b like ignition left/right/both switch in B738/ In sim we can select any, because we have no durability/maintenance problems. each flight - new factory craft
I believe the TLU is the Rudder Travel Limitation Unit. Basically, above 185 knots, it automatically restricts the rudder deflection to 50% of it's full deflection, to reduce the load on the control surface. When slowing down below 180 knots, the unit changes the max deflection back so the pilot can use full deflection again as it's deemed slow enough to be safe to do that
The TLU (Trim Line Unit) on an ATR-42 is part of the aircraft's flight control system. It is responsible for managing and adjusting the trim of the aircraft, which helps maintain stability and reduce the need for constant control inputs by the pilot. The TLU typically adjusts the position of the aircraft's trim tabs on the elevators, ailerons, or rudder to maintain the desired flight attitude.
Another awesome product review Capt! FD2Sim pointed out that when power was added there was not much feel of increase in lift as was expected from big props as was experienced in the Q-400 add on. Cheers to you and the 1st officer.
Thanks Cade! I hadn't noticed this yet but I will spend some more time with it. The Q400 does have much larger propellors and more powerful engines so this perhaps increases the impact!
TCAS is on the ND, you use one of the buttons down to the right of the seat (near the MAP button) to cycle through the radio pages on the display and one of them shows TCAS options
For the record, I've found that you can either put the ZFW/fuel into the FMS or set it in the sim weight/fuel panel and then use long press to populate. Both work for setting those numbers in the plane, so I just use what SimBrief gives me since you can never get exact numbers in the sim panel.
good review, loving this new plane, lots of comments about it, but for £10 cant go wrong and its got a lot of potential. - for the record you can long press the key for ZFW and FOB and it populates automatically. I love the sound of the fly by landing
I agree, it's a great add on - and such brilliant value too...... Expertly demonstrated by yourself. Your Q400 experience really helps the insight into this great add-on. Others have 'dipped in' but you (as always) - go further. Thank you!!!
CDLS is Cockpit Door Locking System and the TCAS is right there in the FMC where you set the "Flight ID", on the RK buttons you have a STBY and ON (yours was ON)
you can save your Simbrief flightplan including weights and balances in the Aerosoft CRJ format and put the resulting file into the asobo ATR folder buried in the MSFS settings tree (location varies for Steam and MS Store installations), then load it into the MCDU by typing the filename into INIT. it will be missing the destination airfield unless you edit the file to change the arrival approach information from (for instance) I30 to ILS30, R30 to RNAV30, L30 to LOC30 -- or you can simply enter the destination info manually.
Fun fact about Flight/Ground idle. The older -500s used to allow the throttles to go to Ground Idle .... then there was a tragedy (shown on the Aircraft Investigation thing on Nat Geo). After that they installed a mechanism to prevent it during flight. This was installed as Standard with the -600s. 😊
Have you revisited the ATR after it was updated after this video? I found the improvements promising, but had issues with the EFB getting paralyzed with procedures we used to do in the version you are spotlighting in this video. Thanks for being such an enthusiastic and thorough teacher.

It's a great aircraft to finally have in the sim. As you stated, the systems integration seems very good and I love the modelling. Agree there should probably be a little bit of grime but I'm sure that can be fixed in an update. Apparently with the flare and landing, once the mainwheels touch down you need forward pressure to fly the nose down (according to a video by an ATR training Capt). I definately can say for me this will be a firm favourite
Interesting, thanks for the tip! Applying reverse with the nose wheel in the air still can cause it to pitch up, so next time I will be lowering the nose first!
@@320SimPilot pitching down technique has something to do with the main undercarriage being trailing link I think? I'll have to find and re-watch the video I saw it on. I'll post the link if you want to see for yourself...
Such a good detailed description and explanation of a lot of the screens, buttons and systems. I know things have been updated but this got me going - I have only just opted to purchase these ATR’s.

Where they complaining about it not looking weathered or something else? I know some people get upset that the aircraft looks new, but for everyone who does there are others like me that prefer the clean aircraft :)
Glad we have a cool turbo prop airliner finally. I was a huge fan of the PMDG JS4100 in FSX. Safely there are no plans to bring one to FS2020. I am a much bigger fan of the Dash 8’s than ATR but we’ll take what we can get! Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the comprehensive tutorial. I was struggling with climb. Right now the only thing bothering me is the constant Oxy msgs I'm getting and cruise target speed not changing.
You are amazing explaining everything. I feel that you read the questions on my mind. 😂 Certainly, you have a gift. I almost feel that I can fly the real thing. Now, I understand your disclaimer. Thank you very much for letting me enjoy every single step and detail in Microsoft Flight Simulator. 😊
Also really glad that you highlighted the potential ‘banana skin’ with the fuel. This almost tripped me up on the first flight I did. Not many videos have covered this! 👍

Great video - really loved it. BTW the document door can be opened fully in the latest version. I have seen somewhere it should be open at several stages for pressurization issues. also I think on the TQ there is a lock (Idle gate) on the Power levers that is moving in automatically inflight to prevent the PLs to go by mistake to GI.
I find the thing with "no devices" both a funny and slightly disturbing story. Because you know they had to find a way not to require that BECAUSE I guarantee you half the passengers give or take would always ignore the requirement anyway.

I enjoy watching your tutorials, simple and easy to understand for non pilots. I've a question about the Set Auto/ Manual Speed Target knob, located left of Capt PFD. Unlike A320, ATR doesn't have Auto Throttle. After setting the speed target with the knob, how do you get the ATR to follow the speed target?
Great video, you always make time to cover things like the process for handling weights/fuel and throttle calibration which gives us a head start in enjoying the add on. You must have been pleased with the landing - transferable Dash skills perhaps ? Many thanks.
Could you do a video shoeing how to manage changes in approach? At times ATC assigns different approach than the one required. The FPMS in ATR leaves me flabbergasted. Would be pretty helpful
Yea, A320 Sim Pilot's reviews are always well researched and well presented. He sold me on a couple of planes like the BAe 146, making them seem very approachable and explaining some of the quirks flying it.
You mention being in notched and not making 240kt's, it looked like you left your pwrmgt in climb instead of cruise right near TOD. could be wrong though but maybe that's why?
Just watched this again from start to finish and it’s a great vid to get someone like me up and running with this aircraft in the sim. Can I just ask how do you get your playback views of your landing? Would love to playback my landings after my flight
Informative and fun video, great job. You seem very familiar with the systems. I am still struggling to remember what is where. I also find the displays tiny and hard to read, and "looking around" the cockpit in the sim of course is very difficult. I can't see the power or condition levers and it's hard to find the notch on T/O even with the "Notch Notch". Ha, I am actually typed in the ATR from the early 90s on furlough. I remember very little about it and ours of course didn't have the glass cockpit, so this is like learning a totally new airplane. I am a Boeing guy with many thousands of hours in the 737s, so the switching and levers are very foreign to me. When I screw up, I am amazed that the condition levers and even the flaps have a mind of their own and will move uncommanded. Very different from the Boeing philosophy. How are you turning those knobs so smoothly? BUT! I am having fun taking a break from easy 737 simming and it's good for my brain to get way out of my comfort zone. In a few more days I am going to start getting the hang of the ATR and then I will revisit my little commuter destinations of the long gone 1990s. Let me tell you, the years fly by in a blink and it's over before you know it. Enjoy! It seems you are. Again great video. I will re-watch. Hey, I am 1 entire video on RUclips and unlikely to add any more, but I am grateful to a commuting pilot for the 1.
Excellent video thanks. I love this a/c even though there are "strange quirks" - I've had VNAV bug out on me twice in the terminal stages but ILS has been solid and regardless - it's *fun* which is what I an here for :-) I think it's clear that your next guest after Katie P on the podcast should be a line ATR pilot....
It's a pretty nice aircraft, but i don't like that with prop brake they seem to only control the animation, internally it seems to be treated as running. I was flying happily had tried but failed to set the brake on ground, when hydraulics came to life, it brake started working but i did not notice till in cruise i went to the outside view.
Surely the weight and balance section within MSFS should be ignored just like we do with the Fenix? If the aircraft display is showing that we have 2 tonnes of fuel then surely that is correct?
You know you are a simmer when you try to change the view angle and realise you are watching a video! I just bought this aircraft, thank you for the demo. very educational.
There's something about the proportions of this ATR and the crispness of the model that is just very very pleasing to me.

A Logainair livery would be good for flying the Scottish island routes

Awesome video. Awesome tutorial. How do you set your cameras out of the airplane and how do you record it. Thank you much
Excellent video thanks.
„There is not an APU on ATR!"
Now he tells me! :))
Also, at 47:00, it looks like it's getting pretty hot in there! :D
Awesome video and a pretty good beginners tutorial. Does anyone know if the screens are touchscreens in real life or only in the sim???
right alt, click, to get the screen popped out.
Thank you very much for your excellent videos!
Lovely plane!
I have been begging for the Q400
Very easy to follow thank you
It's a pretty nice aircraft, but i don't like that with prop brake they seem to only control the animation, internally it seems to be treated as running.
