    Here's an overview of the Leica D-Lux 8 and the differences with the Leica D-Lux 7

      Than wait for it. There is no further development of compacts at Panasonic. They never quit officaly, but it was on all photo news websites in 2022. This might be reason, why the D-LUX8 is, what it is.

    This looks incredible! I've been looking for a camera for an everyday carry and I've always wanted a Leica Q but could never justify the price. The fact that it's micro 4/3 is just a cherry on top as well. I shoot Canon full frame and Olympus m 4/3 and my Oly gets 99% of the use. I prefer the deeper depth of field and it's much better at macro. If I'm asked to help out with some portrait shots I use my Canon (usually with the incredible 85 1.2) honestly I hate shooting portraits... it's by far my least favorite style of photography but this kit feels like a cheat code to get stunning images. Ultimately that's not my jam and I much prefer the results I get from the smaller sensor. So Leica Q looks with my favorite sensor size and pocketable? I might just pull the trigger. Only thing giving me a little pause is the lack of weather sealing.

  • @olavivalli
    @olavivalli 4 месяца назад +6

    Great to have a hands-on review at last! It’s a very tempting 📷 package but the lack of phase detect AF and weather sealing gives some pause, as does the older and small-ish sensor (do we know if the processor is newer?). Suspect these upgrades were left out to not step on the Q3’s territory too much at this price point. Incidentally, do we know how quick the syncing with the Leica fotos app is? Ps; pre-ordered all the same 😂

    • @cris_photography
      @cris_photography  4 месяца назад +1

      Am pretty sure it’s the same sensor, lens, screen, etc.
      Ya had the same thought about the Q3 - very possible (don’t want to cannibalise your sales either!)
      But I also think larger sensor = larger lens = larger form factor = not what they want and what people want. So that might be a reason - not sure

    • @flopiano2000
      @flopiano2000 4 месяца назад

      I agree with you. I was hoping for weather sealing and further tech improvements. Leica menu and Fotos are amazing, so easy to use and much better of any Fuji. I think they improved screen resolution and introduced OLED EVF too. I’m still confused about shutter speed, which moved from 4000 to 2000. I have a D-Lux 7 and I love it. I’m considering to shift to D-Lux 8, although I was hoping for a more radical evolution.

    Nice review and good to see some views of the menu finally. You didn’t mention anything regarding the screen resolution and OLED EVF. I heard they both got upgraded vs D-Lux 7. Also, any update in the AF? And why now shutter speed goes to 2000 only and not 4000 as on D-Lux 7? Thanks for further clarification if you have any.

    • @cris_photography
      @cris_photography  4 месяца назад

      True! The EVF is better (and OLED indeed). No, still no phase detection and contrast only. As for the shutter speed, I am puzzled too as to why that change. Not sure! I will be making more videos (that was really just an overview) so stay tuned ;)

    Good Video. Can't compare it to the FujiFilm X100VI or the Ricoh GR III. Why are these two camera models so highly sought after? The re-sale value is always maintained at an excellent price. The designer of the D-Lux 8 seems out of touch with what the market wants. Releasing a 17MP M43 system in 2024 is a step backward. At the very least, the specs should be upgraded to a 40MP APS-C sensor, with the option to use programmable LUTs or presets. Generation Z desires to look good and achieve a cinematic feel in their street photography. Even Panasonic doesn't even want to come out with a model similar to D-Lux 8, they know it is unsalable.

    Seriously, this is a seven year old camera with a few cosmetic changes.The D-Lux 8 is clearly form over function and purchasing it is red badge fever and in fairness to the Q3 it is not a mini Q3 not even a mini Q 1 or 2. 17MP of DNG doesn't make it better than D-Lux 7. I get the gestalt - in that it is perceived as greater than the sum of it's parts.

    Hi Cris AWESOME video!
    I am quite surprised LEICA is using a M43 sensor in any of its cameras. My guess is it keeps the price of D-Lux 8 competitive with Fuji x100vi (40MP BSI CMOS APS-C X-Trans sensor) & Panasonic S9 (Full frame (35.6 x 23.8 mm - BSI-CMOS) and both of those sensors are larger. I have the Panasonic GH5 which was a great M43 camera in its day and still today. ...I love the video image that camera produced with the right lens. There were issues I experienced with M43 sensor.
    1. not great in low(er) light b/c of smaller sensor size not allowing as much light as for example (1 APS-C, 2 Full-FRAME, 3 medium format).
    2. Depth of Field (BOKEH - blur produced), limited with M43 sensor again small sensor less light hitting the sensor.
    3. focus with video - this might be an issue with video, again reason smaller sensor, less light, less information being read out on the sensor.
    The D-Lux 8 camera body is classic LEICA which is very nice!
    I could see however this camera probably doing alright since it is LEICA, could finally be the chance people are looking for to have LEICA in their hands, might be a fun camera, the size is small and handy and of course that red 🔴which screams softly LEICA.
    ...I think I will wait to see what SONY offerings is, if it decides to jump into the arena as well.
    GREAT VIDEO CHRIS!

    • @cris_photography

      Thanks Stephan. I find the JPEGs to be VERY similar to my SL2s and Q3 - VERY. I think the color science was improved and for example if you use the BW HC or the NAT profiles, they really look like any of my other Leica cameras.
      As for the video, tbh I didn't look into that side of the camera (based on previous models I didn't even want to look). But I will check it out and see if the cropping was improved or not. Cheers

    I had to remind myself that this is a m43 sensor... The image quality is quite stunning. The self portraits you did have fantastic color rendering. If this had a removable lens, it would be the Panasonic GX8 I've been wanting re-released/updated. Now I know why Panasonic hasn't done so. Because of this camera.
    I've been thinking of getting a compact camera to carry with me daily. iPhone pics are 'okay' but they just tend to fall apart when you start editing them or want to use them for web publishing. This Leica camera might be the ticket. The price is right and the image quality super. Might be my first Leica....

    Yes I would have loved to see a new sensor and lens and a few other things. But no matter how you see it, this camera has a class, design and will give for those who ACTUALLY try it in person, a shooting experience that no other "out-of-the-box" Japanese camera can offer. It's a beautifully design imaging tool with a menu and interface as good (and simple) as it gets. I am fortunate enough to own several Leicas, a D-Lux 7 included. Will I be upgrading it to the 8? No. The 7 (I have it is Silver color) is a beautiful camera as it is (with the optional grip that makes handling much better) and though surely better menus and less buttons on the back would be nice to have, I rarely go into the menu of my camera that I setup years ago when I first got it and the plentiful buttons on the back don't bother me. And since the new camera's core sensor and lens specs are the same, Id be getting the same results as mine. The D-Lux 7 is one of my favorite daily driver cameras and I look forward for a version 9 upgrade with revamped sensor, lens and capabilities. I can perfectly wait another 7 years just as the past 7 haven't leave me feeling in anyway that I am missing anything or that the camera doesn't do it's job. For what it is and what it does, I have loved it for 7 years and can surely love it for 7 more if it keeps working. People should stop the obsessive paranoia of upgrading their gear and instead investing in upgrading their skills.

      @@cris_photography Hah bold assumption but nice try. I work remotely and take my D Lux 7 with me everywhere. I'm currently in Dubai and have held the D Lux 8 at the Leica flagship store at the Dubai Mall. If you put a blindfold on me while I held the 8, I wouldn't have noticed any difference except for a button on top and the thumb cluster. 95% of the camera handles the same - left hand controls lens barrel, aspect ratio switch, macro switch, aperture ring, all the same functions, all the same locations as on the 7 and 8. Again, im not saying there are no differences, I'm just saying it's not "completely different" as you stated, which is a hilarious exaggeration

      Surely expecting an upgrade on a compact sensor is rather fanciful. Who wants to make them any more and upgrading them seems unlikely? You only have to look at Canon stuck with old 21mp 1/2.3" sensors courtesy of Sony when even Sony have scaled backed to 18mp. The old Canon SX50 is much more treasured than the inferior SX70 as the line has continually degraded in sensor quality with pointless pixel cramming and specification cut back. Just being able to buy a new compact nowadays is some sort of miracle and the fact this one actually has some improvements even more so.

    I don't think it's a great move for Leica to badge this. It's essentially a paintjob. A really "come hither" to people who just want the badge-- adding merit to the obnoxious idea that people buy Leica cameras specifically for the badge only.
