Nothing but Olympus Tough TG-6 for me: sand, dirt, water, rough handling do not matter. Which means: I have it with me. Since I own it, I go out on purpose to take pictures in "unfriendly" weather and under extreme conditions. Lots of fun, and testing my own limits. This camera is a rugged working horse. Not comparable to the other cameras.

I really liked each compact camera till you got to their prices. Good lord, how can they justify that when indeed the M50 / R50 exist? The R50 has all the “computational photography” features any one of those would have plus everything else except not being weather sealed (but my experience with Olympus “water resistant” cameras has taught me to never trust that “feature”)

The number one slot still needs to be a compact camera. We know you can get larger cams to do the job. The RX100 is the number one slot where an all-round minimal compromise solution is there. Cheers

It’s your list, but why nothing with the micro 4/3 Panasonic cameras’s? The ones I’m particularly thinking about are the fixed lens LX100 M2, or the interchangeable lens GX9 cameras? These cameras have impressive in camera photo features, (4k photo mode, sequence composition, post focusing), creative picture profiles, and by physics should do better in dim lighting and offer better dynamic range than the 0.5 in or 1in. Sensor cameras.

I got my gx80 with the lumix 20mm f1.7 a year ago for shooting when i go out for coffee or just a walk, and it really does the job great. Its easy to use, compact and cheap, was thinking on maybe getting the lumix 12-35mm f2.8 just to get some flexible shots on walks but the fixed 20mm works fine aswell!

I bought my wife the Canon G5Xii. She used to use my Canon G11 when I was using my Canon 7D, even as a beginner she used it in full manual from the off, it was so easy to use. Unfortunately, my G11 suffered from the common fault of the dreaded scratched front element, caused by the sliding doors upon opening/closing, so it got retired. The newer G5 is a very similar form, just in a newer package with better features.
I went to Fuji after the G11 with the X-Pro1, then the X-T1, bigger cameras but still smaller than my 7D, my wife detested the Fuji and lost all interest in shooting at the time until I bought her a Nikon J1 in white, a beautiful camera for a female.
We’d shoot side by side and her smaller sensor would blow my Canon away in dynamic range, and colours, it honestly depressed me, that’s why I shot Fuji, I still use my X-T1 regularly, and it stands up against my Canon R6 no problem, image IQ, ISO performance is very very good against the Canon FF until 3200 when the newer Canon sensor pulling away, it is very useable up to 12.800 with modern cleaning up software, amazing for a wildlife shooter like me.

Very tight video. Once you start spending a grand, then it's time to think about used cameras. But the best pics I've taken were always because I had my camera with me. For the last week, I've been posting on my Facebook Vintage Camera group one pic a day from my Canon Elph 310..I have a pile of Fuji X gear with new and vintage glass, but I'm not taking it out. (Good reasons I don't need to get into) The 310 has an 8x optical, IBIS, 1080p video, 12 meg pics. Winners. And who doesn't love the macro on these old cameras? Just keep pocket lint off your zoom lenses, people. It gets sucked back to the sensor and you can't remove it.

Salam brother ! Funny, I was looking for a compact camera recently myself. I ride MTB, road cycling, kayaking and fishing. I needed something rugged.
I looked into the TG-7, and ended up purchasing one on sale for $638AUD - and honestly cant rate it highly enough.
Image quality is superb for what it is. Better than my phone at least. It has unparalleled macro with in camera stacking and bracketing, HDR, in-camera panorama, shoots RAW, has awesome accessories like a 1.7x and a 0.3x telecoverts and fish eye converter as well as flash diffuser. Above all else, its virtually indestructible.
Its become my new EDC camera and I actually enjoy using it above my M50 and 7D II.
    It deserves more praise.
Great video bro, your content is my chill out time.
    Take brother,
    Salams !

    Great roundup!
I’m narrowed down my search to the Ricoh’s and the Sony RX 100 MVII.
My girlfriend has had the original RX100MI since its release and it still works flawlessly.
My problem is is the times when I want a 28 and times I’ll want a 40. Yes, I’ll probably end up getting the Sony by default.
I would love if Ricoh would pop even a moderate zoom lens on that camera, it would be heaven!

Instead of the R50 I bought a used M50. It’s cheap and they made some awesome lenses for it including a very sharp 22mm f2 pancake lens. And you can adapt EF lenses to it - although it gets a little bigger then. With the pancake its small, though barely pocketable.

I Just dove into the details on the Sony RX100 VII, and I've got to say, while I'm all in for investing in top-notch tech, there's a bit of a letdown here. The operating system feels surprisingly dated, like something out of the 90s, which is a bit of a shocker for a brand that stands at the forefront of the camera world. And then there's the battery tech - it just doesn't match up to the modern innovations we're seeing elsewhere, especially considering the premium price tag. For a company like Sony, I expected nothing but cutting-edge. This review has really highlighted some areas where they need to up their game. Much appreciated for shedding light on these aspects - it's crucial info for anyone thinking about where to invest their hard-earned cash in the camera market!

The Panasonic Lumix ZS60 is a bit older but has a 24-720mm equivalent lens in the same size body as the ZS200D. I have it, and it takes great photos with good light. I have all black but there's a version with silver at the top, which gives that touch of vintage look.

I had the ZS/DS200, and while the 15x zoom works good in bright sunlight, I was soooo disappointed when trying to shoot indoor concerts of my kid’s orchestra recital from the stands. No matter what I did I couldn’t get an in-focus shot. I thought the 1 in sensor would work for me, but the slow aperture f3.3-6.4 on the Leica lens really holds this camera back. I liked the 4k video photo feature, the post focus feature, and the 4k video quality was impressive (best 4k video I had ever seen), but the rolling shutter, (jello effect), was atrocious, and the 4k hand held stabilization was very shakey (You have to get a gimbal). Also this thing really picks up wind noise when shooting video outdoor and it doesn’t have a mic input to help audio quality, wind reduction feature did nothing to help. Also the auto focus in video would do this weird thing from time to time where it would loose focus for no reason and hunt to regain, (strange). I did also see pulsing from time to time. I did like the close focus ability(macro), and the colors in day light were really something to behold, but it really let me down shooting indoors, (birthday parties, around house, concerts, restaurants, museums). If this was used as an outdoor, landscape, street, camera in bright daylight it would be fine. I saw a lot of features I really liked but it still left me wanting more from it than what I got. I returned it, as it was still $550 new.

I got myself a used Canon M6 for around 300 earth units, extra 90 for a used 22mm pancake, that resolves like a 35mm, and an extra 90 for a used evf that fits to the shoe mount. A nice small 24mp APS-C RAW setup for 480 earth units all in. I can take off evf and make it smaller, and even use a toy body cap lens for an even smaller setup. If I were to upgrade now then it would be a Canon R, Ricoh GRIIIx or Fujifilm x100v, as they have sadly stopped doing the Canon M camera - but the Canon M6 II is an option, currently around 600, few extra features on the M6, like using it as a webcam.

The EOS M5 is superb and the 22mm super sharp. Add in the versatile 11 to 22 IS for architecture and the like and the 55-200mm for long reach (also IS) and you have a complete kit for everything from street to travel. It’s not 4K but gives great IS HD. My little kit is off to China next week alongside my new (superb) Fuji X100VI. In black that’s a very low profile tool for city and night shots and the film recipes amazing. Finally, an iPhone 15 promax is a fantastic tool for most daylight usage. Cinema mode is very easy and of course it’s always the camera you have with you….if you can afford it I guess. The 13 pro second hand with a decent memory is still a solid option.

The Sony A7c II should be equal #1, because it’s volume is smaller than the R50 but it’s FULL FRAME with a whopping 33MP sensor. This allows heavy cropping that effectively increases the focal length of your lens. Using APS-C mode you’ll still get a 14MP image.
Its disadvantage is it’s heavier because of its metal body, but that means it’s more robust.

Ok you were right …choosing a light weight interchangeable lens camera in a compact camera segment is controversial! That said, your video. Thought your choices up to then were fair..I do have the 100vii and often use it. If I was to select an interchangeable lens camera (has to be light and small) I think there are many others choices (and perhaps better). A small lens and an OM5 might be near the top, Nikon Zfc (or Z30) and maybe the ZvE 10. That might be another interesting video…like this one!

For family traveling purposes, where I'll be mixing family photos, architecture and landscape, do you still believe the 16mm F2.8 RF is the best option or would you get one with a flexible focal range, like the kit one ( RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3) but then, giving up on the low light good results, or even the RF-S 10-18mm?

    • @FulaanCreative

Ummm, not to bash you or try to hate, but the longest zoom on a point-and-shoot, as far as I know, is on Sony HX90/HX99 cameras. It goes from 24mm to 720mm. The aperture is not amazing f3.5-f6.4 but it has amazing zoom.

    • @Cthames123
      @Cthames123 7 месяцев назад

@chrisidoestech The Hx90/HX99 has an impressive zoom, at 30x and it’s toyish size fully places it into the compact point and shoot category but it doesn’t beat the 40x zoom of the Cannon SX-720H. It has the full frame equivalent 24mm-960mm. I had the HX99 and while it has a good zoom the images are not great. They loose contrast and sharpness rather quickly after zooming in. The sensor on this camera is 0.5in, so you can’t expect fantastic low light (i.e indoor gymnasium or concert halls), or much dynamic range performance, (i.e skys blown out and shadows preserved). The aperture is f3.5-6.4, so it is best suited for perfect lighting shooting, (sunny days) when looking to use the zoom, or using it’s popup built in flash when indoor and want to take normal range shots. You can shoot raw with it, which leaves some room for working with images in post which is good. Also, when shooting video the rolling shutter was unreal, (bad). It can do 4k but only 5min clips which isn’t great but it does have really good hand held stabilization, which gives remarkably steady footage when walking and recording. You get the pop up EVF, the pop up flash, and the screen tilts up, but none of the buttons give a satisfying click and they feel like they will break if used for any amount of time. I returned it, as I still payed $400 for it and it came with a lot of limitations. The one to get if looking for a good Zoom, ( and you’re looking to spend the money) is the Sony RX10 M4. That sucker has a 25x zoom, f2.4-4 aperture , & 1in sensor. It is $1700, and no ways pocketable but leagues better in the picture quality department.
