I'm always dismissive of cold reading and tarot card stuff; but the idea of using it as a story generator just blew my mind.
P.S You guys should do a video on card games like Cultist Simulator.
This will be useful for me, as my fortunes usually come from animatronic magicians for a quarter.
You're gonna save so many quarters!
You get yours from an animatronic machine? I’m still getting mine from cookies from the local Chinese takeout.

I did the same thing right when I graduated high-school. Then I woke up 4 years later w a degree and a job I had no idea how to do.
OK, some clever DM needs to use this to run a D&D campain. Like full reads for major plot points and like draw a card for each player per session and apply that to the story. That could be super cool.
This would be amazing. Maybe a patron at Tabletop Time's channel could pass this on, hahaha.
If you've ever played through curse of Strahd, then you might have seen them do this. The guide for the adventure tells you where certain items and or characters are based on what cards you draw.

It's funny, but this is a great example of how divination actually works in actual modern witchcraft. I've been a witch for almost 20 years, and genuinely, readings are just asking questions and seeing what random cards you get, then telling a story and giving advice based on that random element. Jason and Brian's mindsets are always looking for hits and to impress, as they should, they're rogues. And a lot of professional readers who do reading as a job or side hustle aim to impress too. But the way you described your method of just trying to genuinely read the meaning in the format for the person, that's literally what most witches I know do. Your job as a reader is to interpret random variables into a story that's helpful to the person you're reading for. But yeah, really awesome example, regardless of the belief system or intention behind the methods.
@@ScrollsAdventures SO LAME

@@ScrollsAdventures But how are you, in any way ,a 'witch' if there isn't any sort of supernatural element to the readings and it's all psychology of the subconscious? By the way, it's a REALLY bad idea to do 'readings' for yourself this way if you're prone to anxiety/negative emotion because you'll see everything with a negative outcome.
@@Vladimyrfulwell, like they said in the first couple minutes of the video, secular occultism is on the rise and secular witchcraft is also a thing. For me personally, my method of divination isn't asking the divine, although I will work with spirits occasionally, but using a tool like cards to pull random variables from reality. The witchcraft is that I pose a question, and whatever random feedback I've gotten is somehow related to that question, and I have to figure out how via assigned meanings to the variables. There are spiritual elements to the process that are a little more complex, but that's the base from which this kind of divination come.
Also divining for yourself being bad isn't necessarily true. It totally depends on the person, their practice, and how they can handle it psychological and spiritually. For some people it can be a helpful tool in working through and past those negative things. For others it can cause you to spiral. And for others yet it can be like googling your own brain.
Lastly I'm a witch because I do a lot more than divination. In fact I don't do much divination. I work a lot of spells, curses, enchantments, etc. I've studied all kinds of theology with a focus on magical and spiritual traditions. And really I've just been I've just been practicing magic for 20 years. Psychological is just another tool in that tool box, just like math, carpentry, and symbolic interpretation.
Okay, first up, I love this lineup. The rapport between these four is tremendously entertaining. Secondly, the gentle wobble between "use this power for good" and "use this power for manipulation and profit" is hilarious. Y'all should do an episode on using the method of locci, or memory palace to memorize the order of a shuffled deck of cards. Useful for memorizing just about anything.
The white hat / black hat connection is really interesting. I've never thought of that before, but it totally hits the mark. I've done tarot readings for a while, and in that world, I've seen people who are very genuine, and some people who are out to scam people. One thing they do is to lead people on and get them hooked through fear, uncertainty, and doubt, and keep them coming back and paying them regularly. I've also had clients who come back multiple times due to their own feelings of uncertainty, or feeling like they *need* some kind of divinatory council. Those are often people who are trying to take it very seriously, and who probably need something else besides a card reading. In those cases, the best thing to do is to try to back out of it, or explain gently to them that a card reading is not going to answer all their problems.
I'm so glad that metaphor landed with you! -Brian
I'm actually struggling at learning tarot at the moment, cardomancy with a standard 52 also sounds really interesting.
Also, I love how diamond keeps trying to lead our rogues down an honest "here's what this means, what do you think" route, while our rogues are full-on "scam school" mode.
I was thinking this the whole time, Joe was very "here is how you can do Tarot readings with a regular deck of cards" and Brian and Jason were just taking "Oh so this is how I can turn it into a bar trick" from it.
GIVE UP !!!!!!!!!! NO "tarot cards" BS 😡
Absolutely keep studying, but remember that you can always put your own spin on an interpretation. I have sometimes gotten readings where it feels like the wrong card is there, and I pull the next one and it slots in perfectly.
Cartomancy is a lovely diversion, and way easier to get down, but Tarot is amazing.
Oh, and if Tarot specifically just doesn't want to work, check out Seventh Spere Lenormand on your phone, and try out the Lenormand deck, it works way better for me than Tarot does, as it weaves its stories togeather in a unique way. It's also 100% free.

Diamonds = Disks = Earth (money, material matters)
Clubs = Swords = Air (transient, ethereal)
Hearts = Cups = Water (emotion, love)
Spades = Wands = Fire (passion, spiritual matters)
Face cards also get classical elements
King = Air of
Queen = Water of
Jack = Fire of
Ace pulls double-duty as Spirit of and Earth of (full tarot has a fourth face-card, the Page)
Pip cards are associated to the sephiroth of the Qabalah (its own rabbit-hole, I assure you)
1 = Godhead
2 = Wisdom
3 = Understanding
4 = Mercy/Kindness
5 = Strength/Discipline
6 = Beauty/Glory
7 = Victory
8 = Splendor
9 = Foundation
10 = Kingship

I’m really glad this kind of thing is getting discussed and exposed to a wider audience. Secular/skeptic witchcraft is really interesting, I hate how much stigma is associated with things like tarot-and how shocked people are every time i explain that its not inherently “woo woo” mysticism. There’s a reason tarot cards have a reputation for making people feel “called out,” they’re just tools for introspection!

Brian's offhand summary at 2:40 is actually a pretty accurate description of _chaos magic,_ a 20th century occult philosophy that, among other things, focuses heavily on extracting meaning from randomness in a way that ordered conscious thought and structured belief systems wouldn't allow. You might have heard of some people (notably author William S. Burroughs, AKA the _Naked Lunch_ guy) cutting up words, putting them in a box, pulling them out at random, and then arranging them to create sentences--that's another form of chaos magic.
I've got a Pathfinder campaign going, and one of my players is a psychic, definitely using this in the campaign!

Always loved the idea of divination as creative aid. Philip K. Dick wrote The Man in the High Castle with assistance from the I Ching. Whenever he (or one of the characters) had to make a decision. In some scenes he even wrote the divination into the book, with the characters sorting the yarrow stalks and consulting the Book of Changes.
Got a old book on telling fortune’s with playing cards. This is making me break it out and learn it.
Epic! 🔮
There is a very famous Norwegian song by stein ingebrigtsen called soldatens kortstokk (the soldier's deck) about a soldier going to church and using a card deck instead of the bible. And he has to describe the meaning of each of the cards. Like the King is god. Queen is Virgin Mary and so one. It is a really beautiful way to describe the meaning of a deck of cards 🙂.
13:42 and 13:44 GOTCHA: the ace of spades gets rotated and the two of spades mutates into the queen of hearts.

It's even better to define 5 as family - the fifth "dot" is what's in the "house" of four corners - the family. Then 6 becomes freedom, which just fits perfectly as a counterpart to the the godly and orderly 7
Or you have 5 be family, and since clubs are luck/growth, and you need space to grow, that counts as the freedom side of things. Then you count six as something akin to the river styx, which is hell adjacent, and possibly something to be avoided/aware of. And it makes since because seven is divine, and of course heven and hell go together/next to each other. So the six of spades is a powerful force of negativity that either occurred or is about to occur, or whatever.
There's also the Jack counting as the freedom/variety.

I am absolutely nicking the idea of white hat wizards vs black hat wizards for my upcoming urban fantasy novel.
I got an e-book on this stuff years ago since my high school was doing an Italian Renaissance Masquerade theme for prom my junior year and they wanted me to do some magic tricks. I felt readings would be more "in theme" than simple card tricks (especially since most of the school had already seen most of what I knew at the time, trick wise) and I had already established a bit of a reputation for divination due to previous chicanery (people are shockingly gullible).
The framework was a bit different, specifically clubs was associated with networking, connections, influence, and socialization, for less personal situations than hearts and less concrete power than diamonds. Usually things like work relationships, casual associates, etc. Not close friends and generally kinda impersonal relationships. Also, the book tried to suggest spades weren't inherently negative but the author clearly held that bias so it kinda read as "spades are usually bad". When I did readings I tried to frame spades more as an agent of change since I knew that a lot of stuff associated with "bad stuff" in various divinatory practices usually more literally reference change (or at least that's the correction I see get made, I dunno if this is a ret con intended to "redeem" the negative associations or if the negative stuff really is just a common misinterpretation). I sincerely don't recall much about the number cards in this framework, I know aces were considered to more or less embody the suit, so ace of hearts just kinda says love (or whatever) is involved and would be largely reliant on other cards to provide context, I know two was meant to represent a partnership, three meant growth, four meant stability (the mnemonic the book suggested was two people get married, grow their family by having a baby or adding a third or whatever, and so they built a house, or four walls, around them). I don't recall five and six, but I think six might have been some kind of more abstract expansion on three. Seven was a reference to a higher power or spiritual energy or whatever. I don't remember eight. Nine was something was building up to a conclusion, and ten was a conclusion. A lot of similarities, but the analogies and mnemonics were different so I didn't notice quite how similar your framework was until I tried to articulate what I remembered. King meant an older man, queen meant an older woman, and jack meant a younger person irrespective of gender. I think I like your version of king and queen better, and I think going forward I'm gonna blend your idea of jack with my existing one, instead of necessarily youth or adventure, but perhaps a person who is open to new ideas or with room to grow? I dunno, I rarely play with this stuff anymore, but now I kinda wanna pick it up again.
I've kinda categorized different masks or aspects of my personality that I use in different contexts using aspects of this system, and I've found it's been helpful when trying to "get into character" or whatever. The card I mostly identify with is the Jack of Hearts, so I consider that to be my truest self, when I'm being fully emotionally honest with someone and baring my soul, that's who I am, someone young, inexperienced, looking to grow, looking for love, looking for emotional connections, etc. The persona I take on when I perform or when I need to be most presentable/likable, like when doing a job that is customer facing, or just when I'm generally dealing with the public in a way where I actively want people to like me or be drawn to me, that's the Jack of Clubs, that guy's more flirty, less serious, quick witted, etc. When I play in my LARPs and TTRPGs (although there is much more variation in the latter since I've had WAAAAY more characters there with more room for differentiation), I usually play people with significantly more ambition than I have, who are more ruthless in the pursuit of their goals, and who actively seek out power, whether that's money, magic, knowledge, weaponry, or whatever, that's the Jack of Diamonds. I grew up with anger issues, and I can sometimes have an overly negative or critical view of something or some people, and react more strongly than I really should to things; this is the Jack of Spades. I don't generally like that spades have that negative connotation, and so I try to steer things away from that when I do readings, but when I was first learning this stuff that negative meaning was there and it has been useful to give a name to that side of myself, made it easier to separate that from what I consider to be the core of myself and who I want to be, as well as to transition out of that headspace when I find myself stuck in it. Just wanted to mention how frameworks like this can be useful for self-reflection beyond just doing readings, simply the act of ascribing these abstract meanings to concrete things, like playing cards, can get you thinking about aspects of the self and provide terminology you can use to articulate things about yourself that might be otherwise difficult to find words for, if anyone else finds that helpful or useful.

When I do this trick, I ask about a particular week they are concerned about (birthday week, wedding week, the current week, etc), figure out what number week it is (Jan 1-7 is week 1, Jan 8-14 is week 2, etc.). Then I let them shuffle and we read the nth card in the deck where n is the week number.
That example reading in the end almost resonated with me perfectly wtf
Great to see Joe stand up for his true reading technique, as I feel like Brian was entirely too focused on the magic trick approach.
I really like to make the people toss the cards after blindly shuffle them (so that have cards face up and face down) and in the reading the position of the cards in correlation with the rest is how I read them, if is face up is something that they know it's happening vs face down are the things in their subconscious, if cards are on top of others that mean it's more expressed in their lives, if the cards are close to him it's more important and vice versa, also if it closer to their dominant hand it's their will on those cards, and to spice things up, I ask them at the beginning if they want to flip a down face card so that's the thing is going from subconscious to conscious and where they put them in relation to the rest; and the whole reading the card in relation to the other gives you "extra guidance" and the freedom of being "more specific" ;)
Thanks!
You guys should do a video on learning to sharpen knives. You did axes, which is kinda niche. Meanwhile everyone carries a pocket knife or has kitchen knives. You could do regular whetstone sharpening, fixed angle sharpeners, those cheap pull through ones. Whatever. I'd recommend the worksharp precision adjust or the lansky one (I forgot the name). Knife sharpening seems like one of the earlier videos y'all would have done. But a Google search revealed nothing but axe sharpening

Joe’s definitions of the cards are amazing here, obviously as he is brilliant. I suppose one could go more gender neutral with the court cards - jacks are a young soul, queens are a nurturing soul, kings are an old soul.. I would also consider subbing in routines as the 8s since an infinity symbol is sort of a routine. Awesome work though, thank you Joe and thank you Rogues!
For the classic three draw I would draw the past from the bottom present in the middle and the top for the future

It's always dangerous territory when you can't tell half the time if Murphy isn't really planning some mastermind scheme using orbital demon monkeys with space lasers or writing the next chapter in his book series... either way I guess we'll find out in a few weeks which it is.
Literally, the playing card deck and the minor arcana tarot are almost directly 1 to 1. Suits have theme meanings, numbers and faces have significance meanings. Combine them.
This is spot on. But I'd say that you really don't need to lean on the con angle to buff up the reading even for marks. People want to have the meaning there if they're genuinely letting you read for them. The accurate readings happen naturally because of that.
I love a good Dark Tower reference.
I think of spades and diamonds as crude diagrams of sexual organs, black being male and red being female. Excellent subject!
As a witch it was absolutely lovely to hear you guys talk about so many things I have included in my practices of reading Tarot. You were dead on about it being a tool for self reflection, and something people are using for non-religious means, and sometimes just for fun.
The tips of how to get out of deep situations with deflection are absolutely necessary, especially early on, for anyone who reads to understand for both their safety and the guidance of others.
And yes, there is 100% a white hat/black hat mentality you have to understand, and whether you want to have fun, help people, or do it professionally, versus scamming people, using it to get attention, or even using it to harm vaunrable people.
I love this episode, thank you so much for this
Yes! Thank you! Your comment made my day!
I’ve done a similar thing with marked cards. The lead in is: Tarot is a scam, the reader claims to be feeling/reading the “energies” but if that was the case they could do it with the cards face down. You do the explanation of the suits so the “mark” knows what to expect. Then you have them pick 3-5 cards depending on how much storytelling you want to do. You follow all the cold reading stuff (knowing what the cards on the table are) then as a grand finish, you recap and reveal the cards; naming each card right before you reveal. The trick lands nicely. Glad this video popped up. Totally forgot about this concept.
Someone once said that there's nothing so insignificant, that someone can't use it to foretell the future.
It was either someone really famous whose name I can't remember, or it was me.... I'm honestly not sure which.

I knew Hewey Lewis was a great sage, but didn't know he was a time traveler. This explains much.
My old psychic lady used the whole deck & it had words written on them. She would lave them out 1 at a time into like a circle pattern. She wasn't vague like these guys. She would tell you stuff, in detail and no matter how off the wall it was you just wait because BOOM it would happen. For instance she told my bf when we were teens that her first husband would die tragically, her second would be violent with her and the 3rd would be her forever. We forgot about it and her first husband was involved in a car accident that cut him in half. The second one she was crazy about but he did beat her all the time. Now she has a family with a good man. My husband had left me for another woman, but no one knew because I only told my sister and he was working out of state. I went to her to see what she would say, but I didn't say anything about it. She knew and she told me what was gonna happen with us and in detail the whole mess. She's good. Seriously I have so many more stories.

I do a verbatim reading of what's in the book with no flair or even suggestions until they ask what it means.... as for this version, I'd personally leave in the jokers to signify a break or r & r... & I'd leave in the ad card just for the random "reply hazy, ask again later" from a magic 8- ball
Using the term "tarot" is incorrect. Tarot is an Italian derived deck of 78 cards. Playing cards of thr French style most commonly used in poker have 52 cards. There are vast differences, but divination with playing cards (cartomancy) is a cousing to tarot, but not the same thing.
Even better that this came out on May 25th...international tarot day.
Totally planned that
Oh 100%. Makes it better though

As a video game designer, I can safely tell Jason that his project will NOT be done by June, but that’s okay. The feature creep card isn’t always a bad thing.
