      its a shame really that its not more popular, since they did dominate pretty much a century of swordsmanship in terms of popular usage. you might even say 2 if you include the epee de combat and other dueling swords of the 1800s.
      tbqh i think its also unfortunate since its close relation to 2 of the 3 forms of the still extant modern western fencing traditions, epee and foil. and has the most relivence to those disciplines (footwork, defence etc). though im happy that the direct predecessor of the third, saber, has gotten some real interest with military saber. I think small sword and saber have the most relevant cultural history to today in places like the US, Britian, or France.

Like Jason was trying to just do his usual bombastic razzing, but in that moment Cory was just focused on the instructor and it's like Jason was thinking, "oh crap, did he take me too seriously just now?" for the extension of the arm before the body, i always took that as insurance that you will always be at the full length of your thrust, because if you move your body before you are fully extended your body may be closer to your opponents blade than his is to yours. the same principle for epee and foil. the full extension gives you maximal offending area.

    As a practitioner of modern olympic fencing: The torso isn't "worth more" than the head. Where you hit or don't hit depends on the discipline of fencing. But it's interesting that epee blades are used to practice smallsword, apparently not that much has changed there.
    As a practitioner of German mensur fencing, I find it interesting how the "no face" rule has morphed into the complete opposite where by the mid-1800s, virtually no thrust duelling was done anymore (because it's lethal more often than not, as opposed to cut fencing), and a facial scar was almost a must-have among students. It's not common anymore nowadays, but I know several people who have distinct duelling scars on the cheek (I personally have a very minute one on the cheek, barely visible, even if you know it's there. But I do have a nice 7-stitch one above the temple).

    I always liked the complexities and finesse of smallsword.
    and while it is more of a dueling weapon then most, i really dont think its fair to say they are not a military weapon. seeong as how foot officers very very often wore them into battle in the 1700s and early 1800s, it being downright common rather than it being the exception like it is somewhat implied here. of course in this period an officers primary duty is to lead men with muskets, not to fight in direct combat if they could help it, so its not a primary weapon by any means.

  • @mountainhun
    @mountainhun 2 года назад +1

    Modern Epee fencing doesn't award more points to the head; any part of the body counts as a point, it's just who hits first. :P Foil you have to hit the torso, you don't get any points at all for hitting the arm, head, or legs. Can hit the back if you're good! And saber awards points for hitting any point above the waist. Foil and saber have rules of right-of-way to determine who actually gets the point, epee is just first one to score a touch.

    • @mountainhun
      @mountainhun 2 года назад

      But otherwise there's a lot of similarities between this and epee fencing; how you hold the sword, the extension then lunge, using the guard and forte of the blade to help block the opponent's blade without losing your point position, extension when retreat. Not leaning back so far, though, not so many ceremonials or fancy forms.

    • @mountainhun
      @mountainhun 2 года назад

      Brings back memories of how bruised and sore my upper arm would be by the end of practice, cause that's like the closest and most vulnerable target. XD But I did once win an Under 18 tournament against a person who was in my salle (fencing club) who was much more experienced than me, I broke convention and cut *above* their blade instead of underneath. In epee, that can expose your hand too much, but it gave me an edge to get in the touches I needed. They were so salty, when we took pictures of the winners they had their silver medal on backwards. :P

      @@nathanielwilcox4947 Throwing shade my way? Bruh.
      But it's fair. We're hitting with the point of being the fastest, not deadliest.
      Any hit is a good hit. We do, however, know how to fight with swords. Give me a sword and I can fight with it. Not as well as if I learned, say, HEMA, though. But if I switched to a French grip instead of the pistol grips we use, sure. Even better, then.

    I know this guy has a lot of knowledge about swords and weaponry. But man did it really pain me to watch him handle these swords.
    The oils from your hands can corrode the blades and cause them to rust. And here he was holding and touching the blades all over.

    • @ThornForTheWynn
      @ThornForTheWynn 10 месяцев назад

      You can wipe them down and oil them. Grabbing and touching the blade was a mainstay of numerous weapons. Smallsword even has parries involving scooping the blade away with the off-hand, in addition to the aforementioned grabbing.

    I'm a historical fencer for the french Smallsword after Domenico Angelo teachings and i have to tell you, there's a lot of things wrong in the video and some of it is almost right. It's like when you meet someone and that person tries to tell you the plot of a book that he read years ago and doesn't get it quite right. I appreciated the attempt to make the art of the smallsword more known to the public tho.

      @@RainMakeR_Workshop That makes sense. And I'm with you; I really like smallsword, but the stuff they start with seems unnecessary and takes time from learning the weapon.
      Not to mention that shit goes bad really quickly in a duel. There was one account of a guy running the other guy through before repeatedly smashing the hilt of his sword into his face while he had him tackled. Surprisingly the guy survived, but jello-ing a guy's face with your hilt isn't exactly proper.

    • @RainMakeR_Workshop
      @RainMakeR_Workshop 2 года назад +1

      @@ThornForTheWynn Yeah, I'd happily learn how to use one to fight. But I'd never do the stupid pompous crap. In sparring, if someone did that, I'd just attack whilst they're being pretentious. Smallswords and Court Swords will never be a weapon that interests me more than as a something to goof around with. The only reason I'd bother with it is because every system can teach you something. I'm sure I'd pick up a few things I can apply to the weapons I take seriously. (not saying the smallsword isn't a serious weapon, it is. Just that I don't take it seriously as something I'd want to study)

    • @ThornForTheWynn
      @ThornForTheWynn 2 года назад

      @@RainMakeR_Workshop That's fair. I might try to find a less pretentious source to learn from, maybe see if there was any military smallsword stuff, since they were, in fact, carried by a few people in war.
