I've been fighting rapier for 3 years. This is right up there with the best "how to rapier" videos on the internet. I would send anyone to this video who was studying Fabris.

my favorite part of these ones where theyre learning a martial art is when they do something and theyre like " hey that was really good!" and the instructor is like "actually no everything you did was wrong and youve disrespected me, my family and everything that this gym stands for"

The degrees to radians conversion was crucial for my understanding of rapier fencing, thank you so much!
I thought it was hilarious.
To be fair, if it was given as a a fraction of tau, it would actually be useful. 1.571 radians is not all that intuitive. 0.25*tau radians, on the other hand, makes it pretty clear it's a quarter turn :D

Luke Diggle The whole tau or pi debate often seems silly, but for radians tau is better, imo.
@@Azrage yes, I have to agree, overall I prefer pi (mostly because I don't feel like memorising tau instead) but I know in this specific case, radians, tau is obviously better.

I've been fencing for a couple years and thought I was terrible because I couldn't figure out why my beats and parrys would throw my sword out of line every single time and then this guy comes in with a lesson for first timers and changes my life with that wrist trick.

The head instructor is excellent. He has a certain poise in his movements and you can see the centering of his mass. He is always balanced. His second is close in his movements. I've learned so much thank you for sharing!
So I have to thank Modern Rogue for putting me in contact with AHWG and starting me on my journey into HEMA. It's been about a year and i've loved every bit of it. Thanks guys!

I think most people confuse rapier fencing with smallsword fencing.

YES, somebody said it finally!!! Rapiers were originally quite broad. That thing is a fencing sword, or florete.
What's the difference?
This specific rapier guy has them confused in his description. A rapier was definitely a military sword and a small sword was a civilian or upper class weapon
Yes!!! Love it when you learn a new skill with awesome masters/senseis/teachers present. We learn so much and it is great to see the love they have for their craft. Whether it is parkour, fighting with long swords, firing a bow while galloping, jiu jitsu...it really doesn`t matter. It is both fun and amazing to watch, and I love the long videos!!!
Please make a video where you learn self-defense when you are wheelchair bound. That would be great, and mighty helpful!!

This interested me more than I thought it would, I kind of want to try fencing out, especially with Rapiers. I always thought fencing looked dumb, but now I kind of understand what they are doing, what the goal is. Made it much, much more interesting.
You want HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).
The type of fencing you're thinking about is nothing like this.
@@hailhydreigon2700If there isn't a HEMA club near by then modern Olympic fencing is still better than nothing.
Keep a hema mindset in mind. Buy a rapier and treatises and practice at home. Hopefully convince a friend at the club to join you.
And remember that you're training to fight effectively not just to win a contest. Avoid double touches and weak flicks. (These are things HEMA practitioners can also be guilty of)
I love these weapon videos, it helps me as a dungeon master for dungeons and dragons to better describe fights in the world and wow my players if they want to learn weapon fighting
I wouldn't let most D&D players I've known over the decades near a butter knife, let alone a real sword. ;-)

As a Blacksmith and DM, many fun shenanigans have arisen over various disputes over whether or not a strike would be a verifiable and legit idea, many soda bottles, branches, and the like have fallen to a collection of swords and axes...

Finally. I've been waiting for a good long MR video to come back with teachers and stuff.
This is the content that I miss. I've been disappointed with some of the episodes lately, but swords never disappoint.
If anyone was ever wondering what the Fifth Rule of Proceeding With Resolution was, here it is.
Rule 5 of Proceeding With Resolution is to advance when your enemy has his hand rather straight, by turning your own point from either above or below, pointed directly at his hand.
In this way, you force him to choose which side he wants to defend or attack, and you can quickly avoid his blade in that tempo to strike at his body.
You should use your hilt to defend your body as you turn your hand to make your thrust. Having the point at your opponent's hand makes caving all the more quick.
The reason it runs counter to what they were learning is that in general, Fabris says that you ideally want to control the outside line, because for your opponent, it's very weak for them, and advantageous for you. It also makes controlling the blade much easier and maintains blade contact, which is important in rapier fencing in general regardless if you're discussing Fabris, Capo Ferro, or Thibault.
Maintaining blade contact is much safer in rapier fencing, and easier. Further, not many people have that quick reaction to make this rule work as intended by Fabris.

Cool that you guys did a video on rapier. I personally study Ridolfo Capofferro and the styles are very different. You two should do a video on Side Sword or Saber.

Rapiers and sideswords were in fact very common battlefield weapons, but almost always as sidearms.

very interesting and very in depth for such a (relatively speaking) short video! Thank you! I just took an interest in rapier fencing like... well yesterday. I've been doing some years of Filipino Kali which also is a weapons based art and was somewhat influenced by the Spanish as they occupied the Filipines and I find it interesting how many parallels can be found between arts. There are obvious differences, too of course which come from that both arts have different focus (for lack of a better word). For example, I immediately recognized the definition of distances. In Kali we defined them a little differently maybe but in the end it amounts to pretty much the same distance brackets (adjusted for the length of the weapons used of course). We'd use the terms largo, medio and corto (long, medium, close) to differentiate those distances.

I have so much respect for Modern Rogue, they actually got some people who know what they're talking about for this subject! I've actually been fencing rapier for going on 25 years, and this seems to be a pretty damn solid starter on how to use one. Very nice!

@@DubiousDubs I can drop some destreza authors, but i practice Salvatore Fabrice fencing which is italian, so i don't really know anything more than a few basics: Francisco Lorenz de Rada, Luis Pacheco de Narvaez, Jerónimo Sánchez de Carranza. Those are the ones that ring a bell and i know of academies that use their systems. But beware because it is kinda different system from the one in the video.
I did fencing (saber style) in highschool, I still have the medals from the competitions. I explain to friends and family all the time how it's more like fast paced chess with swords and not just waving around like barbarians.

So this video just showed up in my recommended for some reason, but I must say it’s very pleasant to watch. I’m a wrestler (a good idea for a next video...), and I find the similarities very interesting. Good job on this video!
20:00 the living hand versus the dead hand - this is talked about by most fencing masters and even Musashi in Japanese sword - you never want to lock your wrist and hand out - let them move correctly.
Been teaching fencing and rapier for a whole lot of years - thank you all for showing this stuff.
Edit: watching the actual fights - yep - fights look like fun with the experienced guys - and the newbies are entertaining! Typical.
