Yes but they attack so reclesly like they dont care if they get hit. Typical to sport fencing.

@@Vatras888 Trust me - this was pretty fine and clean for sport fencing... But this is close as you can get to actual swordfighting, without being worried about your life or health in long term :D and reckless fighters often make work things that you wouldnt expect, after all - everyone mentally sane is bit afraid of fighting even if they got sxkills- its natural.

Longsword vs Sword and Buckler as they are roughly contemporary and would've faced off one another in many situations historically. It would be great to receive some nuanced opinions from these master fencers.

@@Karol-bo1nv Not all the time. Sabre, especially this Hussar model were also used as a dueling weapon without any offhand weapon
I've done quite a bit of sword and buckler vs longsword and the sword and buckler wins about 75% of the time. As soon as I catch the sword on my buckler and get inside the longsword's tip it's over. The longsword is faster but the sword and buckler fencer has 2 weapons. My 2 cents. Jeff Sovelove, NJHFA Free Scholar/Instructor
@@Karol-bo1nv Ah, but the revolver hasn't been invented yet and so he's got a brace of single-shot howdah pistols. Having expended them both on the longsword's friends, they would be useful as parry sticks or small clubs, but nothing more.

Antoni's grandfather was in The Deluge which most people agree has one of the greatest displays of sword fighting in a film.

That was fascinating. I came into it thinking that it would be a hard mismatch, both of these weapons were designed for very different purposes, so at first I questioned the value of this test. It would be like comparing the effectiveness of a rifle and an SMG, both serve very different purposes. And yet it's not unreasonable to assume that historically many (or even most) fights would be between opponents with differing weaponry, and mirror match fencing doesnt capture this. Pretty sure it was gonna be an up-hill battle for the sabre due to the longswords length and versatility (and it certainly was), but Olbrychski still put up a hell of a fight.

It's been done. I've seen a West Point weapon's instructor doing a comparison of that, and according to him, the result was very close.
Oh, obviously the rifle tested was a semi-auto Garand, not a bolt action rifle.

And they would have never met on the battlefield. Hussar sabre did not turn up before mid XVIIth century. Historically most Hussars did not use the Hussar sabre, as it turned up already at the dawn of their downfall. They used shamsirs, backswords, Polish-Hungarian saber, maybe Karabelas, but Hussar sabre turned up late.

This is one of the best weapon vs weapon sparring videos I've seen. Excellent break-down in slow-motion and explanation of the hits. It's so difficult to see whether a hit from the federschwert is substantial enough, as the foible is so narrow, especially on those false edge zwerchau hits. Looking forward to more cross-weapon sparring videos like this!
The longsword's reach advantage is so hard to negate by a single-handed sword alone. I wonder if the saber fencer is more aggressive and tries to tackle and grab more, what would happen. Easier said than done I know. BTW what is the blade length of the feder and the saber used in this fight?

from defending against long weapons with short weapons i can say you have to be very brave and a bit foolish to win.

@@killerkraut9179 35cm is an absolutely massive reach advantage, you have an about an arms worth of extra range to use against your opponent, and you can see that the longsword uses that reach very well to bully his opponent. The sabre is forced to often overextend and to keep jabbing and swinging to ward off his opponent, because if the sabre allowed the longsword to use his reach advantage to the fullest, then the sabre would be even more greatly disadvantaged.
So the sabre is forced to keep testing and teasing the longsword's guard with flicks to keep the initiative, using his slightly superior speed to stop the longsword from encroaching into his guard, hoping for an opening and exploiting ones immediately if he can. You can see this desperation in their first confirmed landed strike, the sabre performs a near suicidal attack out of desperation, because he sees a vulnerability (the longsword's faltering guard due to a failed overextended cut) and he goes for it, most likely knowing he's going to receive the counterattack.
While the longsword can execute most movements at advantage, almost at his leisure, if he isn't fending off attacks. You can see this when the longsword goes on the offensive shortly after their first confirmed hit, gaining the second confirmed hit soon after. The longsword, when he gains the momentum, and forces the sabre on the defensive by threatening the sabre's guard with thrust's at first, quickly dismantles the sabre's guard by threatening with a blow from one side, but quickly reversing and striking on the other. The sabre is forced to respond to this first provocation (and so falls for the faint), because the longsword has stepped into the sabre's guard, and due to his inherently longer range, threatens a blow that the sabre cannot (due to the longsword's reach advantage) give proper answer against.
TLDR: 35cm can feel like an insurmountable obstacle, and the sabre duelist is an exceptional fighter for negating his disadvantage with footwork and pressuring his enemy with his speed.
Excellent fencing from both of these gentlemen.
i love this match-up!
some observations:
- even though the longsword is slower, feints still work a treat (2:19, 2:29, 7:45, 8:42)
- closing with the thrust is a bad tactic for longsword as it gives up the reach advantage and sabre is much too fast in the riposte (3:30, 7:12)
- ...but if saber allows longsword to stand nearly in measure (in order to have a chance of scoring hits himself) then longsword thrusts are much more effective (8:00 as a threat, 9:50 as a successful direct attack)
- at 4:04 a strike to the hands from below is accounted a safe hit but the sword is completely flat (and the strike at 2:31 wasn't great either)
- cuts to the leg remain a bad idea even with a zippy weapon (2:41) (this time the flat counterstrike gets called out but i wouldn't call that a win for saber)
- vertical direct cuts by saber allow longsword to make the most of its reach advantage by advancing into the attack during the parry (5:14); horizontal cuts do not afford the same opportunity (3:55, 4:21)

Agreed. Even with the flat of the sword, a hit to the skull like that is something that will not leave you unfazed. The hit to the leg is certainly at least not imminently lethal, and if the hit with the flat dazed the sabre-fencer, a follow up attack with the longsword (and even if it's a half-falling thrust) may certainly be lethal.
Yes, its bit slower, but not that slower that you could count on that and with reach advantage, I think its bit unfair fight for sabre. Striking legs is almost every time bad idea in duelling as its target that is hardest to reach and will leave your top side open. You can just step back strike him from top while your opponent is outta reach if he aimed for you bottom.

Seeing Antoni talked about how it's more difficult to operate the Hussar Sabre with his military sabre background, it makes me think about minor differences between systems that tailored to use the weapon to it's full potential
I said it's more difficult to operate hussar sabre comparing to extremely light Olympic saber. Not that military sabre background is a problem :) btw. my background is as follows in that order: 1. hussar sabre 2. military sabre 3. olympic sabre. Of course there are no textbooks for the Polish saber, so it's possible to train it more by practise than studying specific systems (it's still possible to look for similarities from another fencing traditions though).
My lineage has a similar issue with what Olbrychski experienced. Against a lesser fencer who is not so skilled at threatening that deep thrust with their long range, bullying the longsword is almost a walk-over, because it tends to readily offer a bind if you're on your game, and from there, working in closer isn't so bad.
But that length matters and closing the gap isn't so simple: against somebody who's good at playing to the longsword's strengths, closing the gap without eating either the point or a short and sharp body cut can be a **real pain in the butt.**
Hussar saber is a cavalry weapon. It was meant to be used primarily from the horse. But the fact that it can be good in more conventional fight is also interesting. Longsword is a multi-tool designed with foot combat in mind. It obviously would have some advantage in one on one combat.
@@TheRezro yes spot on and i don't agree that broadsword will have advantage on one on one on foot because sabre is used by single hand mostly and they got shield in another hand
I would say that any skill that you have with shortswords or hunting swords can be easily apllied on sabre - sure it has some more potential if you learn proper sabre moves but fundamentals like postioning, distance and tempo can be applied regardless what you fight with. TBH calssic boxing helped me a lot with my fencing fundamentals. The fast pace combat and footwork really helped me deeper understand basics.

The reach is about the same, as the sabre is one-handed.
The Longsword doesn’t have additional reach. The saber is one-handed, which usually means better reach over two handed swords. Unless they’re massive like a Spadone or Montante.
@@magnajota4341 Fair, though maybe I'm a bit biased ^^. Obviously anecdotal and dependent on the exact weapons, but my club measured this case a few years ago. Our blades were each about 2cm shorter than the ones in the video, but otherwise fairly similar. We measured a ~3-10 cm difference in favour of the longsword, though the lower end of that was much more common. The exact value depended on stance, ability to extend your hand and exact attack angle. Probably some other stuff I don't remember.
Not a world's difference for most of the time, but we perceived that it made a substantial difference. The longsword's reach felt safer as well, simply because we didn't need to make such big and exposing movements with half our body.

Both MMA and fencing are great. And the experience from MMA can also be excellently applied when fighting with a weapon.

In the second fight you can see Antoni gradually becoming tired as his parry reactions become slower. Towards the end Mateusz was able to overpower Antoni's guard. The real advantage of the longsword comes from the fact that two hands enable a more secure grip than one.
You could also see him begin to bounce. In the 4th longsword kill of the second round you see the first bounce, then on the second bounce he fires. With Antoni literally flying through the air, his only choice is to parry his ass off.
thank friggin god that you actually decided to pick some people that could honorably defend their weapon type. a lot of similar videos from other channels its always jarring to see how the combatants have such different levels of familiarity with the weapons that are matched up against eachother. very good!
I really appreciate the editing with the slow-mo recap and the additional clarifications (i.e. clearly indicating hits with the flat side and the "blood clouds"), as well as the statistics and explanation of the reasoning behind the rules. Very good.
Good video. About what I expected. The longsword just has too many advantages when it is sword alone (unless it's a rapier). Of course the real advantage of a one handed sword is being able to use something in the off hand, whether that's a shield or a pistol. Would love to see sword + shield (any kind) vs longsword for the next matchup.
Longsword can be beaten by double weapons as it cannot cover 2 sides at the same time - event 2 swords could do it (musashi style/rapier +dagger)
The part I feel was missing from the video - in the "only lethal hits count" part I feel they fought normally, with hits that don't count interrupting the exchange. I wonder how the score would change if Antoni decided to use left hand more proactively to defend then. There is downside to this as left hand still has arteries and veins but losing a hand while winning might be preferable to losing a head.
I wouldn't mind an extra section where a left hand hit in sabreur results in 0.5 point while torso/head results in a full point, in a double. And maybe a section where hand/forearm hits don't count at all, for both sides, with encouragement to exploit it fully - by shielding with a left hand for sabre and maybe playing more aggressively for a longsword.
Give the saber fencer a single-shot paintball pistol in his off hand and he wins easily. 😂
Excellent video. Just a small note: I think it would help viewers if you reminded them in the video itself when it's a good idea to turn subtitles on. It's a minor inconvenience, but if it stops people from pausing the video because they suddenly don't understand what's going on, it could be worth doing :)

I am in Australia and train longsword. This is a superb video, well presented and very, very instructive. Both swordsmen are skilled, dangerous opponents. it was fascinating to see Olbrychski working so hard to get finer control from his sabre, very difficult to do one-handed, yet very often succeeding. Well done to both men and the Academy.
Sorry to be late, but as a fellow Australian how would I go about getting a Federschwert? I’m yet to see one, and I don’t know if the legislation allows for me to get one through post, though I may be wrong. Just considering my options before saving up, though I should familiarise myself with the legalities before really getting anything up. Thanks!

What was the most interesting is the very low count of not safe hits - goes to show the skill of the fighters and the major difference between HEMA and sport/olympic fencing where not only the hit counts but you also have to live throught the fight ;)

Rapier vs Epee was intriguing, but this is crunchy! And yet another example how skilled fencer can really stand up against longer weapon. With hema heavy, steel weapons it's much easier than experiments with synthethics or foam swords suggest.

i really appreciate the breakdown at the end, of which techniques work against the opposing weapon. it emphasizes that it's hard to say if any weapon is 'better' than another, but what we can prove is which strategies work well in certain cross-weapon matchups. great work!

I liked that you guys had different target rules for each set. Made it even more interesting.
I couldn't even imagine what it'd be like to try and survive in a place of battle where everyone has melee weapons. I also think of how many great swordsmen got taken out by an arrow or other projectiles.. And many other things that go on in and even years before real battles and duels.
That holds true for all wars. The modern equivalent is being a world class marksman but still getting blown up by artillery

I would pay money to see a competitive series of this. All comers, all weapons, all disciplines. I wanna find out for real what the BJJ equivalent of sword fighting is. The weapon/style that whoops all until you learn to adapt. Depending on off-hand rules my bet is on rapier and dagger/buckler, but I'm an idiot so...

For simulating unarmored combat with no weapon restrictions I'd probably bet on a large roundshield plus a medium-length weapon. It's a combination that's annoying to carry and takes a lot of physical conditioning since a shield that big is heavy, but it's also really hard to attack someone who has one and anyone who doesn't have a similar amount of defensive ability is going to find it challenging to get past without taking a hit.

Excellent video astounded by the sheer skill of these two men. I look forward to the other weapons tested. I do hope to see a greatsword at some point if possible, as historically it was the last sword to be a primary arm.

Love how they actually both went at it hard and committed strongly to attack and defense. Most videos seem more playfighting than anything else. Also as much as I love the saber, it is just darn hard to overcome the reach advantage of a longsword in this match up. Also I noticed that to effectively attack with the saber, because of its generally sweeping cuts, the blade has to travel much further than the longsword to secure a hit while the long sword always had the strong option of just being thrust forward to do the same. I was really hoping the saber would win hands down but I am pretty convinced that skill being equal, the longsword does indeed have the advantage in this match up.
Zablocki once fought agaist kendo master and said that two handed swords are very hard to fight against because of the leverage a swordsman can create. So it is very hard to approach him with a sabre. If you manage to get in, you win. They both fought defensively so it was a draw.

Nah you can’t give a sabre to a guy who has a long sword stance a sabre must be held out in a 45 degree angle in posture use the curve to wrap around the body for Leaft and right shots p.also being 45 it’s tilted so up and down also he was using edge align to much whole point in a sabre is the back is a sickle.the amount of times he could have just yanked his opps sword from his hands.

It was interesting to see how these two weapons interacted. From my amateur eyes, it looked like neither weapon was really using the full scope of its capabilities, both weapons like to clash and slide off of a similar length blade of similar geometry, but since the longsword was ever so slightly longer, it turned into a game of chicken between the two.
It's clear that the saber was significantly more agile, so Mateusz needed to act more defensively by sticking his sword out in between them, seemed like most of the points the longsword scored were either from feints or when Antoni hesitated and gave his opponent an opening. Whereas the saber excelled where it does best, being slippery, hard to pin down and attacking from unexpected angles. However once you took that advantage away and focused only on vital areas, the longsword definitely took the advantage. Which makes sense, the Saber is from a later period where armor began being phased out, and in large part, was a "civilian" weapon, not unlike the rapier, the longsword, by contrast, being from a time when armor was approaching its most advanced form, and so precise strikes to vital areas were paramount to consider in weapons design.
At any rate, amazing showing, look forward to seeing more in future.

Quite an interesting matchup. Not that I expect you to run the same fight again, but it would be revealing to have a repeat with examples of the swords that are a little closer in size and weight. The longsword having a small advantage in both mass and blade length probably affects the outcome quite a bit. While I'm sure that such decorated fencers probably have at least a passing familiarity with the other weapons and styles they're facing, it might achieve even more depth if they give each other a sort of crash course of condensed training in their respective styles.
i think they are bringing in more people for other videos also perhaps and i trust them not to do a weapon type if they are not good at it.

Very interesting and fun to watch. On the second hit by the sabre to the knee the longsword fencer gets a clean hit to the head (uberloffen). The knee hit was survivable. Not so for the longsword strike to the head. That said, excellent fencing from both! Well done guys!
the knee is one of the most painful areas to get shot/crushed/stabbed so the effect of such a hit could shock the combatant enough to fall over which in battle means you are dead anyway.
@@zaganim3813 You would be surprised what some people survived.. Charles IV (bohemian king, roman emperor) had his jaw splitted on tjost he was young. Very nasty injury where is guaranteed infection. However, Luxembourgs being very wealthy family, they had him treated and his jaw were literally sewn back together with golden wires apparent from his skull after dead. He lived nearly 80years in good health, spoke 4 languages. So they definitely knew a lot of stuff, just not everybody got what he needed :D
@@zaganim3813 more to the point is that when one fencer sees a sword headed for their brain they forget all about the knee hit. Try it with foam boffers or try traditional freeplay. You move to protect your head, not hit the knee.

Jakoś mało realnie to wygladało ,walką szablą jest bardziej dynamiczna ,jeśli naprawdę tak by to wyglądało to miecz by nie zniknął wyparty przez szable
@@Niktnamnieda ale też walczący szablą stosował szermierkę olimpijską a nie sztukę krzyżową, nie było pracy nóg po krzyżu i wszelkiego rodzaju młynków. A różnica może być wtedy taka jak pomiędzy judo a aikido.

@@Niktnamnieda nie chce być niemiły dla zawodników, ale trochę tak :) . Broń to tylko narzędzie, szabla polska ma rozbudowaną sztukę jej używania. Miecz nie miałby szans nawiązać poziomu dynamiki gdyby szabla wirowała wokół atakującego szabla. Z kolei walka w tłumie, gdy nie można robić młynków i uskoków to miecz wchodzi wszędzie jak w masło.

This matchup is primarily about measure, as are most fights between weapons of unequal lengths. In general shorter, one handed weapons will dominate a longer weapon but only once the distance has been closed. The longsword has a power advantage and is able to crush through a sabers guard easier but once the saberist has closed ground, which is really only about a step, the longsword loses a lot of its strengths. Great fight between two excellent and well reknowned fencers though, I love that the community as a whole is embracing mixed weapon sparring, cross training really helps to improve us all.

So you mean in general it will almost always be desirable, because the point of length is to have the clear advantages, as they figured with spears.

I am just a begginer fencer, using cavalry sabre myself. Watching it was as entertaining as... educative!
It was quite obvious to me (and probably all of you) that longsword is at advantage due to length yet what we saw and the commentary afterwards opened few new avenues. Their legwork is also on spot I see, especially shifting their weight.
Ahh, I wish to duel any of them one day. I would get my crap kicked in but man, just imagine this! Local fencer, duelling with master! The boost to confidence!

I vote Longsword vs Rapier and Dagger. Here we saw when it came to lethal targets, reach was a serious advantage. Given the rapier's length, I'm curious to see how it fares.

Sabre lacked a bit of agression. If he kept pressing and flanking things would be different.
its however hard to be aggressive when the longsword can punish you so quickly, i agree tho the best way to beat long weapon is to close distance quickly!
Sabre fighter was so good for not getting pummeled more with longsword :D Reach advantage and two handed grip is huge +

Panowie prezentują wysoka klasę. Pragnę zwrócić uwagę, że w drugim starciu gdzie miecz miał wyraźną przewagę punktową to jednak dwa pierwsze czyste trafienia miała szabla i w realnej walce byłoby pozamiatane, szczególnie po tym trafieniu w głowę przeciwnik nie miałby szansy na kontynuację.
w realnej walce realnej obaj byli by okuci w zbroje więc nie każde trafienie musi coś zrobić przeciwnikowi zwłaszcza muśnięcie. i tym bardziej trafienie w korpus który często był kawałkiem jednolitego żelastwa.

that was a great match. in general good cutting weapons are top heavy that also makes them more demanding and predictable especially if its one-handed... even if a longsword gets heavier its two-handed, and the pommel for counter weight makes them easier to maneuver...in general... even here the cheeky faint always wins a duel xdd
