- After 6 Months of recovery from a hard knee surgery finally my first longsword / HEMA tournament without any bigger issues.
Scored 2nd place in the final after a very hard elimination phase which cost me a bit too much energy to keep up with the very good distance work and low thrusts from vaclav sokol :)

I am quite confused, strange rulings if it even is a rule. . . 🤔
Amusingly, they explicitly stated at the beginning that hits with the flat would not be counted.
On the other hand, they also said one handed thrusts were allowed, but would be pointless as thrusts would only count if there was visible flex or visible impact from the thrust.
That didn't happen either lol
@@WhyName Accidentally hitting with the flat happens of course, but here it seems to be done on purpose. Is there a reason for it ?
@@frenchgalloglass5204 flat hits are generally easier to land, the flex makes them much harder to parry.
If judges give points for flat hits, they will dominate everywhere.
Ulm has had people adapting to flat hits for a few years.

@@frenchgalloglass5204 well no worries, the flat hit meta ran into the one handed thrusts meta and lost, so we might be shifting.
It's still not pretty, but i wouldn't call it a downgrade either.
I had hoped the thrust to the balls would have been captured better, but sadly it wasn't. It was my highlight of the day followed by the words:"Behold. The glory of czeck swordmanship."

Was there a rule added that allowed slaps with the flat to score? I thought standard DDHF doesn't score those.

No. Last year flat hits (and gehils) counted. This year they chanced that rule back again.
@@hanshandsniper9419 So flat hits shouldn't score. Yet every cut-like action by this fencer is flat. They have great edge alignment, only they use it to align their edges perpendicular to the strike.
The question then becomes:
Are the judges not aware of the rules?
Or if they are, did they choose not to uphold the rules?
Those seem like the only possible answers. No one could be so blind as to not see the strikes are all flat.
I don't know. Maby they were confused because of the changes and thought it should score. What do I know. I would prefer the flat hits would score.
Flat hit shouldn't be counted, but judges here were super inconsistent and often counted valid hits as flats, and flats as valid hits. Not using cameras also didn't help.
