I realized it at the half. The blue sock of the one and the oranage of another does not make it easy. The armbands are not well to see, but the stupid blue sock is! And as a layman (beginner) it is not easy to see who do strike, who get the point.

He KNEW Blue would instinctively slash down from a high guard (maybe it was a tell he picked up on or gambled/intuition) or else he wouldn't have parried high while in mid-step. Had this been a real duel with no armor, his guts would have been spewed everywhere... All it takes is a moment to lose it all...damn, pros and masters of their craft are incredible!!!

responding a little late but this was less of a read and more of conditioning. He feint the face thrust to make his opponent block high. The fastest strike the opponent could do after attempting to block high would be to slash downwards, and the attacker knew that. Great stuff all around.
Yeah there isn’t enough flourishing and spinning like in the Witcher which is very accurate. These guys should watch more Hollywood movies and play games on medieval warfare if they’re gonna try and do this kind of fighting :/
Backflips might actually work. If one of them came out backflipping, the other might be too stunned to react until it was too late. Of course, it would only work once. Ever. I'm pretty sure every future opponent would have heard the story. Still, it would be epic!
I do Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and we sometimes compete in High School gyms. It depends on how big the competitions are. Big ones usually have to rent out arenas.
In case you're like me and it takes 2 points to figure it out: the competitor colors are for their arm bands. It doesn't help that the competitor with the blue arm band is wearing some sort of reddish-orange-pink clothing while the competitor with the red arm band is wearing one blue sock.
I like that you folks now use our scoring system which we've been using for so long. Its good to see the sport preserve the culture along with their history and give fencers a chance to showcase themselves in a safe and controlled environment. This way we all come out winners.

A Katana can actually be wielded exactly like a Longsword, and it will still function very well. It's just too heavy for its reach, and the curve may be great for Iajutsu (drawing slash, its primary use), but it becomes a lacking weapon afterwards compared to others in its classification. Put a great HEMA practitioner (not me lol) up against a great Kendo practitioner, and experience would make me bet on the HEMA guy 10/10 regardless of weapon. Kendo is fine, but it's very steeply rooted in tradition. HEMA is also very much rooted in history, but it is based on renaissance era medieval combat, which was the absolute pinnacle of medieval combat. HEMA can be looked at like the MMA of swordfighting. It has combined every style over the centuries to create a superior whole.

I love how the referees know to keep away from the sword strikes, and to use a long stick to convey their instructions at a distance. I wonder what happened to the refs before they figured out that it's best to use a long stick to keep distance. . . . . hmmmm . . .
Oh yeah. There was even mention of it in some histrorical fencing text I think. Basically if the opponent is willing to commit suicide to get a hit in, he will get that hit in.
this is so much more similar to the classic fencing i learned than I expected.. a lot of waiting and then a loud clash with about 3- 15 strikes and up to 15 more techniques, and way more stabbing than slashing, just because stabbing requires less big movements. I mean... i should have expected this, but damn I did not expect I still had quite a few misconceptions borrowed from hollywood.
Seems like it would be difficult to judge, but I would love it if it could figure that out somehow. The only thing I've ever seen be judged in that style were those M1 Medieval fights.
The way they were scoring, it appears that they were simulating unarmoured combat. So more than one strike would be pointless (excuse the pun). I guess if you were simulating armoured combat you could let the strikes continue until somebody did a technique that would penetrate the imagined armour or find a weak point.
@@Reginaldesq Or until a certain time limit elapsed. Continuous sparring improves sparring levels, in my opinion. Point sparring leads to combatants moving in a hesitant manner. I think in future ..the athletes themselves will demand continuous sparring.

As for Skallagrim, he's far from a reference on the matter, and so is Blood&Iron HEMA who benefited from Skall popularity. I would rather recommend Arto Fama, he's an incredible fencer.
that I saw a street sword fight on social media when I was in Asia. The fighters were not actually very skilled, but it was crazier than this, half like a movie, half like two tantrums going for it. I guess it was a gangland scrap. It was intense. One thing I did discover was that, unlike the movies, when the sword hit the loser on the jaw/side of the face, he dropped unconscious before he even hit the ground, like a heavy punch. Then he got fatally hacked as he lay... 8oO ! In the movies, the actors usually turn towards the camera, screaming dramatically as they fall... But now I know that if those sword edges hit you on the face/jaw with concentrated impact, it's lights out like a knock out punch.

I find the point system weird. Why is getting a hit in scoring a point? Langschwert-fighting is not about getting a hit, its about getting a hit without getting a counter. Also: Do you notice that neither of them is using any of the classic stances as desribed in the long sword treaties? So, while this is certainly long sword fighting... it doesnt look like HEMA to me.
What are you implying? That being hit by a long wouldn't constitute a point? You know that Longsword fencing was done with practically no protection?(from most manuscripts you will only see them wearing gambeson or full steel but that's a different martial art all together.) So a lighter cut to the arm or wrist would constitute as a hit with most likely a lower amount of points due to it being a non vital area.( which can be argued because of not being able to use on of your hands with a two handed sword is pretty bad) From you comment I think you also don't understand how the point system (most often) works. The head and torso tend to be worth 2-3 points (most often 2 from my experience) and the legs and arms 1 point. The amount you score against the opponent subtracts from the amount of points the opponent makes against you if they attack fast enough after each other (around a second of time in between hits) For example I hit your head with a trust and you hit my arms while I am making the trust which would result in me getting 1 point ( 2 - 1). As for not using historical stances they mostly stayed in longpoint and plfug I did see dennis hovering in alber. I would agree with them not using many different stances but that doesn't mean they didn't use any at all. From you comment I constitute that you don't know much about Liechtenauer.

I would say that they move into long point while making a trust a view times. You are correct in saying that they don't really change guards much. and mostly stay in pflug (Arms slightly to the left or right of the body while keeping the point aimed at the opponent) and alber (basically the same stance as pflug but with the point aimed downwards.) I don't really know why they do this I can say that they are top level fencers you could probably see them on HEMA ratings.com (scoring system used by basically everyone which keeps track of ranks) or in swordfish tournaments on youtube (basically the European championship of HEMA)
Still I'd prefer if they didn't get a point if they got countered. I mean, in a real scenario, great you wounded him fatally while he only sliced your forearm open, so you win. But not to fight another day, because your hand is irreparably fucked. In reality you would do your best to avoid this, but with this particular point system, you go for it because it scores you a guaranteed point. I think the point system should work in such a way that would force the contestants to behave as close to reality as possible. Any situation that you would want to avoid in a real duel, you should want to avoid in the competition as well.
watching these types of sword sparring videos makes me realize how bad ass these ancient warriors must have been cuz there's almost no video where someone DOESN'T take some form of damage when delivering a winning blow. It's like even if you kill your opponent you walk away with a huge gash somewhere on you... You'd have to be such a master to always have the upperhand and never get seriously injured throughout your warrior career. In mma even the best guys of all time get punched in the face sometimes but you can take several punches and still win the fight. In this shit if u allow even 1 sword to slice your skull open, you're fucked
Yep. Double kills were common, especially if the combatants were without armor. I remember one medieval writer referring to it as "an abomination" , probably because its just not fair.

Or gladiatiors who won their freedom. Really puts into perspective how incredibly skilled some people must have been. They did not fight like that, they feared of dying and didn't charged suicidally at each other. The problem we live in HEMA as of now in competition is that protective gear (which do not simulate armor) is making you forget at least a great part of the danger of getting hit by a sword. In the time we practiced with wooden sword that didn't bent, without protective gear other than the mask, we feared of breaking ribs of fingers and we fought safer.

I've come to realize that sword fighting is like chess. Strategies and feints, and knowing what play to use.

I thought that bit was really disrespectful. Turning his back on his opponent with no acknowledgement, dropping his sword in the middle of the ring for the judge to pick up, throwing his helmet on the ground.
His sword broke, and although throwing on the ground was prob not a good idea, he did it bc his sword bent

@@r.l.mcdermid6034 Well no. I do HEMA as a hobby which I've developed thanks to my having been a competitive martial artist for the better part of my life now. A Katana can actually be wielded exactly like a Longsword, and it will still function very well. It's just too heavy for its reach, and the curve may be great for Iajutsu (drawing slash, its primary use), but it becomes a lacking weapon afterwards compared to others in its classification.
Put a great HEMA practitioner (not me lol) up against a great Kendo practitioner, and experience would make me bet on the HEMA guy 10/10 regardless of weapon. Kendo is fine, but it's very steeply rooted in tradition. HEMA is also very much rooted in history, but it is based on renaissance era medieval combat, which was the absolute pinnacle of medieval combat. HEMA can be looked at like the MMA of swordfighting. It has combined every style over the centuries to create a superior whole.

How about mixed swordsmanship in vein of MMA? Such as Roman gladius with a Roman shield vs two-handed sword? Or a buckler & an axe vs long sword & a shield? Different combos of equipment & styles vs each other

I love how the referees know to keep away from the sword strikes, and to use a long stick to convey their instructions at a distance. I wonder what happened to the refs before they figured out that it's best to use a long stick to keep distance. . . . . hmmmm . . .

I guess it was not uncommon that both sword fighters died in a fight back then. 3:33 and 5:11 was such an attack.
Oh yeah. There was even mention of it in some histrorical fencing text I think. Basically if the opponent is willing to commit suicide to get a hit in, he will get that hit in.
this is so much more similar to the classic fencing i learned than I expected.. a lot of waiting and then a loud clash with about 3- 15 strikes and up to 15 more techniques, and way more stabbing than slashing, just because stabbing requires less big movements. I mean... i should have expected this, but damn I did not expect I still had quite a few misconceptions borrowed from hollywood.

Seems like it would be difficult to judge, but I would love it if it could figure that out somehow. The only thing I've ever seen be judged in that style were those M1 Medieval fights.

The way they were scoring, it appears that they were simulating unarmoured combat. So more than one strike would be pointless (excuse the pun). I guess if you were simulating armoured combat you could let the strikes continue until somebody did a technique that would penetrate the imagined armour or find a weak point.
@@Reginaldesq Or until a certain time limit elapsed. Continuous sparring improves sparring levels, in my opinion. Point sparring leads to combatants moving in a hesitant manner. I think in future ..the athletes themselves will demand continuous sparring.

If you look up "federschwert", you should easily find several makers. The standard for competition is Regenyei Armory.

@@Estupitastico Except that on the most viewed competition videos, the technique displayed is quite poor, and it's hard to find the historical aspect of it. Even Axel Pettersson agrees on this. As for Skallagrim, he's far from a reference on the matter, and so is Blood&Iron HEMA who benefited from Skall popularity. I would rather recommend Arto Fama, he's an incredible fencer.

that I saw a street sword fight on social media when I was in Asia. The fighters were not actually very skilled, but it was crazier than this, half like a movie, half like two tantrums going for it. I guess it was a gangland scrap. It was intense.
One thing I did discover was that, unlike the movies, when the sword hit the loser on the jaw/side of the face, he dropped unconscious before he even hit the ground, like a heavy punch. Then he got fatally hacked as he lay... 8oO !
In the movies, the actors usually turn towards the camera, screaming dramatically as they fall... But now I know that if those sword edges hit you on the face/jaw with concentrated impact, it's lights out like a knock out punch.

Those are some fairly thick Regenyei feders. I think they're 0.5 or 1 mm thicker than his "standard" heavy feder.

Sadly you don't really get good scars from feders anyway. Best you can hope for is getting stabbed in the eye and getting to wear an eyepatch.

I find the point system weird. Why is getting a hit in scoring a point? Langschwert-fighting is not about getting a hit, its about getting a hit without getting a counter.
Also: Do you notice that neither of them is using any of the classic stances as desribed in the long sword treaties? So, while this is certainly long sword fighting... it doesnt look like HEMA to me.

That being hit by a long wouldn't constitute a point?
You know that Longsword fencing was done with practically no protection?(from most manuscripts you will only see them wearing gambeson or full steel but that's a different martial art all together.) So a lighter cut to the arm or wrist would constitute as a hit with most likely a lower amount of points due to it being a non vital area.( which can be argued because of not being able to use on of your hands with a two handed sword is pretty bad)
From you comment I think you also don't understand how the point system (most often) works.
The head and torso tend to be worth 2-3 points (most often 2 from my experience) and the legs and arms 1 point.
The amount you score against the opponent subtracts from the amount of points the opponent makes against you if they attack fast enough after each other (around a second of time in between hits)
For example I hit your head with a trust and you hit my arms while I am making the trust which would result in me getting 1 point ( 2 - 1).
As for not using historical stances they mostly stayed in longpoint and plfug I did see dennis hovering in alber.
I would agree with them not using many different stances but that doesn't mean they didn't use any at all.
From you comment I constitute that you don't know much about Liechtenauer.

I would say that they move into long point while making a trust a view times.
You are correct in saying that they don't really change guards much. and mostly stay in pflug (Arms slightly to the left or right of the body while keeping the point aimed at the opponent) and alber (basically the same stance as pflug but with the point aimed downwards.)
I don't really know why they do this I can say that they are top level fencers you could probably see them on HEMA ratings.com (scoring system used by basically everyone which keeps track of ranks) or in swordfish tournaments on youtube (basically the European championship of HEMA)
Still I'd prefer if they didn't get a point if they got countered. I mean, in a real scenario, great you wounded him fatally while he only sliced your forearm open, so you win. But not to fight another day, because your hand is irreparably fucked. In reality you would do your best to avoid this, but with this particular point system, you go for it because it scores you a guaranteed point. I think the point system should work in such a way that would force the contestants to behave as close to reality as possible. Any situation that you would want to avoid in a real duel, you should want to avoid in the competition as well.

watching these types of sword sparring videos makes me realize how bad ass these ancient warriors must have been cuz there's almost no video where someone DOESN'T take some form of damage when delivering a winning blow. It's like even if you kill your opponent you walk away with a huge gash somewhere on you... You'd have to be such a master to always have the upperhand and never get seriously injured throughout your warrior career. In mma even the best guys of all time get punched in the face sometimes but you can take several punches and still win the fight. In this shit if u allow even 1 sword to slice your skull open, you're fucked
Yep. Double kills were common, especially if the combatants were without armor. I remember one medieval writer referring to it as "an abomination" , probably because its just not fair.

Or gladiatiors who won their freedom. Really puts into perspective how incredibly skilled some people must have been. Even Ali used to get punched in every boxing match so its so crazy to think someone could go a lifetime of swordfaire combat without getting any serious lasting injuries and be able to retire. I guess thats why discipline and formation was so crucial in empires like Rome and Sparta. Those big ass shields go a long way too lol

They did not fight like that, they feared of dying and didn't charged suicidally at each other. The problem we live in HEMA as of now in competition is that protective gear (which do not simulate armor) is making you forget at least a great part of the danger of getting hit by a sword.
In the time we practiced with wooden sword that didn't bent, without protective gear other than the mask, we feared of breaking ribs of fingers and we fought safer.
So what? It was even more boring than this one?
