I've a lot of respect for Sabre fencers but my issue with it - is the lack of Exchanges . It reminds me of two rams . They charge then their horns hit . I really want to try fencing, do you have any tips for me? My mom doesn't seem interested in the concept and my friend said it won't do my future any good. She also thinks it's boring but I have to disagree with that. I already know how your feet are supposed to be and how to move them, and how to attack. I want to learn epee because your whole body is capable of getting hit.
I remember doing 1 week of epee camp and a fun trick I did while using my left hand to fight against right handed players is when they try to lunge or extend their arm out to hit you I immediately jump back while also poking at their extended arm to get a point. I was an amateur against other amateurs when I was doing it and that trick worked pretty well till I went up against a pro for fun and had my ass beat since my arrogance got the best of me instead of being even more cautious than I should be
Interesting. I have a question about that move; Had a left-hander used such a move in an actual duel with double sided swords, could it have afforded you the opportunity into the opponent's fighting arm, or even cut it off, all together? 🤔 Yes, I am really asking.
I mean I can see where your left, fighting arm would then be outside the opponent's right, striking arm while they were following through with their lunge. They might not be able to pull their blade back in time to contact your blade, as you swing inward. But I am not sure.
@@TheNoiseySpectator from the SCA prospective this move would be considered a cut but would probably land you with a warning if the jumping movement wasn't controlled. It wouldn't dismember anyone but it would disable the opponents arm. Anyway if you have the ability to cut an arm you probably had the opportunity to kill your opponent.
Very nostalgic for me watching this video, one of the best stories I used to tell people when I use to do fencing. Is that I was fortunate enough to represent New Zealand in Épée in the under 18 South Pacific champs that was being held Sydney. As happy as I was hearing the news of being selected there was only one problem... I didn't know till later that The day of the tournament was also the same day that I promised to take my Best friend to the prom🤣. I didn't want to let her down so I promised that I will be back in time. So the day of the tournament began and I was nervous as hell considering this was the first time I ever represented a country in anything. I managed to win 3 out of 5 pool stages. I did get eliminated early in the final stages and I came 35th out of around 70 people, so pretty good in my eyes. As soon as I got eliminated I had rush out of the arena, get changed, pack everything, then rush to the airport and it would be a 3 hour flight to Christchurch. As soon I landed me and my dad had to drive another 2 hours to Timaru (at this point it was around 8am New Zealand time). I got home and had a snooze for hour, then later I had to shave and get changed Into suit on get ready to go over to my mate's house to go to the prom later that day...honestly this story could be turned into a low budget Disney movie 😂. Sadly I don't fence anymore but I had some times good along the way.
@@tukuhauaitu8296 I was skeptical that he would be involved in such a high tournament when he had not yet even graduated from high school. But I read it again, and he seemed to be saying that the tournament was the "playoffs" for those under 18. Is that correct?

Non fencer here looking to get into it. I have a pretty extensive knife and short sword background (as well as Filipino Martial Arts) and was curious which style/weapon to try. Since I've spared before I think I'll try epee first. So thanks for the clear explanations. I once saw some historic fencers grading up and they did more than these three. Best is to start foil and change later, it is better for the basic. What is better depends what you like for I have done all three the weapons and they got all their own style.

Thanks for making this video! I think I'm learning this relatively late in life compared to others, but I have my first fencing lesson tomorrow and appreciate the easily digestible refresher.
This is a great explanation. Right of way is very clearly explained, I will explain it this way as well later I think. I'm a foilist and tried the other weapons as well and indeed, sabre is fastest and épée is slowest, but it's all very very cool
Randomly came across this video. This is well-made, thorough without meandering. I had no clue about how fencing matches are scored and now I do. Nicely done, friend. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much! I had to prepare a team project with my friendabout Fencing, and even though I practiced it, I still forgot to put the basic rules! The website I consulted, didn't show them, so I simply forgot. But I was lucky to find your video! Great job!!
Just don't call it 'Olympic Fencing' in your story. As a fencer who qualified for the olympics, i can tell you that nobody called it 'Olympic Fencing' unless it is in the Olympics
White is traditionally the color worn so it's easy to see if one was bloodied. Breeches (the pants) was what everyone wore back then. They didn't bother updating it when people stopped wearing them. And the mask is so they don't end up with eyepatches and look like pirates.
@@Chem_-jp5em There's a Korean coach that comes to the club I fence and referee at and he is pretty scary when you make a call against one of his fencers.
I’ve been fencing epee and Sabre my entire life (started when I was six) and to me this is an incredibly simplified explanation, like putting butter on bread simple. Now I’m seeing comments that say fencing is complicated. I guess from an outside perspective it’s a lot to take in at first but once you get it, it’s really pretty elementary.
Thanks Aidan, much appreciated. I try to keep things simple in my videos for complete beginners to understand. My videos aren't geared towards experts - because they probably don't need it anyway. Subscribe & check out my channel for more content like this :)
This was such a great explanation video! Thank you, now I know why watching the Olympic Sabre Gold Medal Match was so fast and exciting -- they really are lightning-fast and the bouts are over quick!
Epee is the most fun and strategic imo, ofc you dont have the right of way rule, but this makes it only more complex. While the others might be faster, you have way more options in epee. Even if you attack, you can`t be sure the opponentt will parry, because he isnt forced to by the rules. You also don`t know where he is aiming to strike, so you have to be even more concerned and smart about which part you expose. Speed and reactions are key to every form of fencing, but in epee you have to combine these with stategic movement, anticipation and reading of your opponent more than the others imo, which creates a very fun mental battle of baiting, exposing and punishing movements combined with the physical aspect of the sport.
Epee? The most fun? LOL. I've seen several high level, 15 touch epee bouts have the first period skipped for noncombativity, and then end with scores somewhere in the region of 5-3 after a riveting 6 minutes of bouncing back and forth. Foil is the superior weapon, sabre is pirate fun times, both are better than epee.
2:11 this may sound weird, but by the latest regulations, right of way goes to green. Red did not have forward movement of the blade, their disengage was way too wide. Touch goes to green. For those curious, for you to establish right of way, you must establish forward confirmation of movement (You are moving forward and you intend to move forward), you must establish forward movement of the blade (your blade must be moving forward, and you must intend for it to do so), and the blade must be threatening valid target (your blade has to be pointed at something it could score a point from if it touches).
It's also a penalty if your guard touches your opponents body. Coz otherwise, people might try to hurt their opponent during play to gain an advantage. Also, when body to body contact is made a halt is called, fencers distance themselves and play is resumed. In foil, if the guards are locked against each other (like what you see in movies), a halt is called, fencers distance themselves then play is resumed. In epee, it's not halted when that occurs. If the time ends on a tie, one fencer is randomly chosen to have priority. Play is resumed for one minute and unless the opponent scores one hit, the player with priority wins.
Whilst those are correct, I wouldn't explain every rule in a beginners video. It'd just confuse the hell out of them. There's many other things I could have mentioned about Fencing, but didn't for ease of explanation.
I remember for the time I did fencing with an épée that a hit was canceled if your body was beyond your opponents body. Can you tell me if I remember well ?
@@kaalbrak When you pass your opponent, a halt is called. If you turn around and touch your opponent before the halt is called, it doesn't count, but if your opponent aims their sword back and hits you before halt, it does count (as long as they don't turn their body as well). This adds an extra dimension to flèche attacks (attacks where you make a dash past your opponent, aiming to hit them along the way) because if you fail to hit your opponent, you leave yourself extremely vulnerable, because fencers train specific attacks designed for hitting someone behind them.
Super helpful! I just got bored with boxing and on a whim watched the white knuckle thrill ride that was 2019 budapest comp. I'm hooked but hardly understand, thanks for clarifying!
This was actually a really good intro to the rules of fencing. The only bit that's slightly incorrect is when you said that an attacking position is one where "the arm is extended and the tip of the blade is threatening your opponent" is not really used in modern foil. Yes, a perfect attack meets those criteria (so let's say we both start off the line. I hit you with a single advance lunge with an extended arm while you take an extra step and hit with a bent arm. The ref will likely call it my attack). However, in most situations, the refs call an action based on which side looks more attacking. For example, I'm advancing you're retreating. At some point you extend your arm and run into me while I finish with a bent arm. There are some nuances (like attacking into preparation) but 99% of the time, that's my attack because if you're retreating, you're not attacking by definition. EDIT: Same goes for ducking/dodging/otherwise trying to evade my action. A good analogy I've heard is the following: Let's say you and I are in a bar. I hear you say something, get offended and start aggressively moving towards you. You back off until you hit a wall and then out of desparation, throw a punch. Who started the fight? Most people would say I did by aggressively moving towards you. Same logic holds in fencing. If you are retreating to something I'm doing, you are conceding that you find my action threatening (aka an attack).

I just got into fencing, I’ve always wanted to do it, but the Vega Street fighter music being played in the background whilst knowing Vega is my favorite street fighter character means destiny is finally leading me the right way.
For those unaware, it's a reference to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". When I heard the word "riposte", I immediately thought of the swordfight between Cate Blanchett's character and Shia Labeouf's character on two jeeps in the middle of the Amazon jungle.
Fantastic stuff. First time I ever check because I am reading a neckbeard story about a lady fencing sabre and I just wanted to understand and be able to picture attacks. Thank you for making!:)

God I miss fencing! :( It’s definitely a perfect covid sport! ;) XD You need ALL the PPE and NO “exceptions” especially choosing to NOT wear the mask! Keep your distance from your opponents and if they get any closer to you, STAB EM!
Very good quality video that explains the rules well and is great for beginners. One thing that I would add is that it did not mention that in Sabre you are not allowed to cross your feet going forwards. Apart from that however, it was excellent.
Thanks Stephen, I appreciate that! I probably should have mentioned that, yes. Be sure to subscribe and check out my channel for similar videos to this! :)
for some years now the lower part of the mask bib is also a valid target in foil. Don't be discouraged if you think your reactions are not fast enough, a good sense of timing, distance, rhythm and a cool head are perhaps more important, the fast reactions of an opponent can be turned against them by feint attacks and second intention moves. Get along to your local club, all you need are trainers and light clothing because most clubs supply the equipment for beginner classes.
@@NinhLyUK Your tone is very great in my opinion. You are not too catchy and though english isn't my mother language I can easily understand what you say and focus on the video at the same time. It is very apreciable, I think you just won a sub ;)

This is a great explanation. Right of way is very clearly explained, I will explain it this way as well later I think. I'm a foilist and tried the other weapons as well and indeed, sabre is fastest and épée is slowest, but it's all very very cool
Very informative. It gives a different idea of fencing from what I've seen in Zorro's movies and television shows. Well done
Randomly came across this video. This is well-made, thorough without meandering. I had no clue about how fencing matches are scored and now I do.
Nicely done, friend. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your clear, easy to understand explanation. Fascinating sport!
Thanks, glad this video helped.

After this video, I have decided I wish to do sabre fencing, thank you for helping me make my decision.
Anytime! Good luck, as Sabre is the fastest of the three. Check out my other videos for more like this!
Thank you so much! I had to prepare a team project with my friendabout Fencing, and even though I practiced it, I still forgot to put the basic rules! The website I consulted, didn't show them, so I simply forgot. But I was lucky to find your video! Great job!!
Glad it helped!
Hey, I’m working on a story right now in which one of the characters is an Olympic Fencer, and this is definitely helping. Thanks!
Cool, glad this video helped.

Just don't call it 'Olympic Fencing' in your story. As a fencer who qualified for the olympics, i can tell you that nobody called it 'Olympic Fencing' unless it is in the Olympics
Am trying out for my high school fencing 🤺 this helped, thank you 🙏.
Glad this helps! Good luck!
Fencing gets you all the b*tches
Very interesting, informative and worthwhile video.
All that equipment makes them look like astronaut's
Wiggins Inc. haha, that is true though
Don't modern astronauts wear orange or blue? They're cool by the way.
Better than getting stabbed!
White is traditionally the color worn so it's easy to see if one was bloodied. Breeches (the pants) was what everyone wore back then. They didn't bother updating it when people stopped wearing them. And the mask is so they don't end up with eyepatches and look like pirates.
I see them more like bee keepers, exept they are missing the hat
Great explanation of right of way, which is probably the most complex and frustrating thing for people who want to watch or try fencing to understand.
DON'T BLINK
Me:
Procced to blink
Then you've just missed it ... boy these guys are fast.
@@NinhLyUK it's especially hard to take screenshots for taking notes
I just watched my first fencing video and sometimes even in the slowmo replay plus x0.25 speed I don't understand how they got the point
X2
Am I the only person Who thought of the Doctor Who Episode 'Blink', with the Weeping Angels in When he said "Don't Blink"?
I love how Vega's theme from street fighter was used in the video. Magnificent 🔥
Refereeing this sport is stressful. Especially when the movement is really fast.
Is it? I always thought that the referees were either trained fencers or former fencers that can see what most humans can't.
Ninh Ly Talking about in amateur level. Especially when the fencers argue back.
Ah, I see.
Tringapore nah, that part’s fine, it’s the Russian coaches... they are terrifying.
@@Chem_-jp5em There's a Korean coach that comes to the club I fence and referee at and he is pretty scary when you make a call against one of his fencers.
Often wondered the rules and different styles! Thanks!
GREAT MUSIC CHOICE! Vega (Claw) has the best SF theme!
Well spotted!
Thank you for this! I want to watch the fencing events at the Olympics this year and was struggling with keeping the rules for each weapon straight.
That beat at 2:40 was dank
Totally, yeah!
It's Vega's theme from Street Fighter.
Would’ve been better if he didn’t swing his blade around and just made a direct attack
Awesome video. Awesome editing, music, voice, and everything makes sence. Thanks!
Thanks bro, much appreciated!

Omg. I can hear Vega’s theme (or Balrog in Japan) from Street Fighter.
Yep, well spotted. It's Vega's theme from SFV. It went really well with the video! :)
Ninh Ly hell yeah it did!
HELL YEAH
Appreciate ur hard work bro. Explaining is on the point with no bluffing.
Thank u ☺️
My pleasure
I’ve been fencing epee and Sabre my entire life (started when I was six) and to me this is an incredibly simplified explanation, like putting butter on bread simple. Now I’m seeing comments that say fencing is complicated. I guess from an outside perspective it’s a lot to take in at first but once you get it, it’s really pretty elementary.
Thanks Aidan, much appreciated.
I try to keep things simple in my videos for complete beginners to understand.
My videos aren't geared towards experts - because they probably don't need it anyway.

This was such a great explanation video! Thank you, now I know why watching the Olympic Sabre Gold Medal Match was so fast and exciting -- they really are lightning-fast and the bouts are over quick!
Glad it was helpful! Hope you enjoy Fencing!

In short yes. I'll take your word for which is best as I'm not a competitive fencer.
In other words we like to fake out our opponents before they do the same to us. Spoken from an epee
I really love that you used Vega's theme for this video, fits perfectly lol
Well done...easy to follow and great footage. You are to be congratulated.
Thanks man! I try my best to make all my sports videos easy to understand with relevant video footage. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
@@threeletteragent Okay, thank you for the explication :)
this video explains very well the professional fencing, except epee (some important things were not mentioned). Generally well done!
Thank you!

Very informative, thank you!💕✨💥

2:34; "IT'S NOT A MATCH, MOM!"
I guess?
For those unaware, it's a reference to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". When I heard the word "riposte", I immediately thought of the swordfight between Cate Blanchett's character and Shia Labeouf's character on two jeeps in the middle of the Amazon jungle.
HA! Glad someone else appreciated that
Fantastic stuff. First time I ever check because I am reading a neckbeard story about a lady fencing sabre and I just wanted to understand and be able to picture attacks. Thank you for making!:)

Yeah, I thought that the theme went very well with the video too. Thanks.
Ninh Ly Yay! 😃😃😃😃😃😃👏👏👏👏👏
Hey again Ninh. Tbh back then I never liked watching fencing but after this I really enjoy it. Cheers man thanks.
Cheers Alex. A lot of people take Fencing at face value because thhey see a few minutes of it on TV at the Olympics.
But once they actually understand what's really going on - it becomes a fascinating sport.
These guys are serious pros!
Absolutely right. I did however do this at school which was decent but fencing is awesome now I've watched this video
i used to fence competitively and on my high school team.. high school fencing was a joke. im graduating college in 2 days, maybe ill have time to pick up the foil again
It's never too late bro!

I totally agree. Thanks.

Eepe is the best!
I'll have to take your word on that one.
Nnahh m8 foil is the way to go
Very good quality video that explains the rules well and is great for beginners. One thing that I would add is that it did not mention that in Sabre you are not allowed to cross your feet going forwards. Apart from that however, it was excellent.
Thanks Stephen, I appreciate that!
I probably should have mentioned that, yes.

i think it's easier to walk on the moon than to take up fencing.
for some years now the lower part of the mask bib is also a valid target in foil.
Absolutely! Thanks for the heads up and advice to the public!
Only if they used real sabors... that'd make fencing more interesting
In the 80s, there were still fatal accidents in fencing.😢😢
I have mad respect for using Vega’s theme
Thanks! And well spotted!
