i’ve recently come across fencing and im already very invested in how it works ! i’d love to try it in person some day
Did you end up starting?
@@kazz9849 prob not
@@byrne8509 Oh, why?
@@SuAmazing thats a different person replying
Hope your well... Did you try it yet?
Second rule of fencing: Don't talk about fencing
Third rule of fight club, DONT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB
Sorry I'm kind of new, so I just wanna ask..WHY?
4th roules don't break fecing stuff
Rule number #1, DONT ASK QUESTIONS
😅😅
I used to love fencing when I was a little girl. My siblings and I would pretend like we were fencing all the time. I think had I taken it up as a sport I would have been good at it. I'm now almost 59 years old.
I know a woman who started fencing at 50 I believe, and I think she is now 60. She placed 3rd nationally in women's épeé. You'd be surprised in your power. I reccomend going for it.
Oh, but you stop it? or din't have time to start fencing?
One of the things I found in my brief experience with fencing is that it's a very equal opportunity sport. You don't have to be football player strong or basketball tall to be a good fencer. Plus it's a great workout....physically and mentally.
Not if you’re left handed then you have the advantage
I did soccer before, I didn't really like it especially because I didn't have a strong kick. I had good skill, but everybody else out powered me so they were better. When I did fencing, its something I enjoy, and its something that I can use more of my skill than strength.
@@c.i.a.3384 I don't know much about fencing in particular but I do happen to know quite a bit about foot placement in regards to boxing and stylistically wouldn't there be no advantage in an open stance matchup?
@@c.i.a.3384 i read that is not an advantage, is more that new fencers only knows how to fence agains righ handed, because we see more of they (i guess) but fencers who has more experience know how to fence against left handed so is just about knowing how to counter (sorry for my english)
To be good, you have to have very fast reflexes, so I dont agree with you. Its like saying that Tennis is a equal opportunity sport. Why do you think even Serena Williams refused to play with a guy?
To all the people here saying that fencer would be killed in an actual sword fight is the same to comparing a boxer to dirty street fighters. Both Fencing and boxing has set rules and regulations. As soon as those rules are dropped most training is loss.
Have you ever seen a boxer fight a street fighter? the "dirty street" fighter loses every time.
I think, what they know can be easily convertet into a deadly Rapier fighting style.
*****
Smallsword* fighting style. Completely different thing.
Foil was meant as a trainer for smallsword btw
taliesin garland Exactly.
Used to fence with miles at our club. Great to see him succeed!
Fencing with no masks... my trainer would have made them do 150 abs as penalty
Lol tru. My coach would have yelled @me !
At our club we have the chair of shame lol
Shouldn't that make them better fencers? Avoidance of injury and all that?
I am pretty sure they did it just for demonstration purposes and they weren't really fencing were they? It is a 2.5 minute gig to get folks interested. I am glad you have a fencing coach and that you fence but ask your coach if he has ever been in the olympics and has he ever did a short spot for the sake of the sport?
araMannA Same XD
I'm a 11 year old fencer! And I want to go to the Olympics😸
Your 15 now. You still fencing?
16 Now, we need to know haha
But I want to learn fencing
Are you tall?
So i checked all the names at the last national tournament, no Jillian Miller but there was a fairly good Foil fencer named Naomi Miller
“I know something you don’t!
What’s that?
I’m not left handed!”
I have something to tell you
I am not left handed either
My girlfriend is a gold medal fencing champion three times in a row...i am doing this for her..cuz she means a lot to me..XD
Justin Ryder You two still together?
Justin Ryder That's cute.
That's sweet
6 years later...
He be like 👁👄👁
Lmao 6 years laytaw
how about fencing with fences ?
Lol
Dorcusss that is amazing imagine your foil being a plank of wood pulled from your backyard’s fence
fencing, with fences, ON a fence.
I'm really on the *fence* on wether this would work.
@@paythatbill8546 Getting slashed would hurt WAY more.
I do fencing, I believe it’s pretty hard just like other sports but it’s very fast which can be confusing to people who go on with their daily lives. When I started off fencing I cried blood and tears because I was not quick enough to take down anyone I went against. My reflexes were slow. But I have now improved and I think fencing is usually about reflexes. My opinion. Foil is the hardest one I had been through. Frankly because my weapon had seemed to always hit the leg or head. But Epee is important with defence. I mean all are but defence is not my strongest skill. Keep in mind fencing is not about hurting each other
I've been fencing for about a year and I still need to improve a hell of a lot more. I love fencing, it's the best sport in the world!
Did you ever improve?
It’s good, but martial arts are better
@@_delta_music_ i think everyone can have their own opinion 😄
This video was great. Well explained, very brief and informative, well structured, and I feel smarter (meaning: I found what I was looking for).
It is amazing the similarities between all the different combat sports. Im an amateur boxer and a pro MMA fighter told me to watch this vid.
thx this helped a lot
Me and my sister-in-law are thinking of doing fencing together cause my bro is always working, this actually looks pretty cool, I wonder how hard it is in person haha
if you're with other beginners that go at a slow enough speed, it's not "challenging", but fencing does take practice. Fence against others that are faster than you, more familiar with fencing, and can lunge father and more quickly than you, then yes it'll be challenging
It's hard but so much fun! I would definitely recommend it
John . Smith Kinda hard.
nightfox380 having a shorter reach or lunge is not a problem.
0:23 thats me in the background!

@Jaeden. Gray lol
WHAT, WHERE IS THE REST OF UR BODY?
To all the idiots saying that fencing shouldn't be an olympic sport:
1. I'd like to you try it
2. Before you all start ripping on fencing why don't we considering getting rid of things that really aren't sports *cough cough ping-pong*
also would everyone stop ripping on fencing for "not being real sword fighting".
It's a sport. I don't people freaking out about skeet shooting not being real because they aren't shooting real birds.
Fencing is cool... but ping pong is too :)
I'd like to you try ping pong
And golf
*Cough cough major league gaming*
I have aways loved fencing even though I have never done it before. My mom just told me that she singed me up for a fencing class for beingers and I can't wait!
kdramas really makes me do things i normally don't... now here i am learning this while waiting for 25 21 next episode...
If you’re a pro at fencing your basically count Dooku 😂
Thank you Brothers,, I'm gonna make my first match tomorrow 😃👍
Thanks, this is really helpful for a quick guide to fencing.
Thanks I was able to impress my teacher by actually beating them
because we're not trying to kill each other. fencing is done for the sport, not to win fair maidens by drawing first blood with a rusty or dirty sword
Teach more things in one video
kyneisha baptiste they call it the basics not how to do everything in fencing
Thanks for the training tips fellas EN GARDE 🤺
We as viewers may not see much of a battle but I can assure you that their minds are certainly battling.
Hello, my name is Rita and I am representing Olym Fencing, one of the fencing clubs in Taiwan. I was wondering if we could have the privilege of using this video for promoting fencing in Taiwan? Since fencing is not a common sport here, it would be great if we could attract people's attention with a good video of fencing. We would like to post it on Facebook along with some information about our club. It would be great if you could give us a reply and thank you for your time.
Sincerely yours,
Rita
I'm fairly sure you are in your right to post any youtube video on your facebook without any legal issues.
Rylan Delap nope you arnt it's a violation of RUclipss copyright laws
I don’t think you can, although it may be fairly simple to recreate the video.
Best of luck,

Why didn't the Seahawks just run the damn ball?
@No Bias I mean it is Higuain
I would be banned from my club if i even pointed a sword at someone without a mask on
Fencing is like tennis or golf. It's easy to do, it's hard to do well. You can be as good at it as you want, just takes commitment and time.
I would like to learn this art, really it's an art.. But there is no fencing clubs or anything around.. I'm sad((
In theory, gives you more opportunity to react to opponent's attempts to parry/evade whilst still within one period of fencing time (essentially before your front foot lands).
AWESOME thanks a lot for this
Hi i loved the video (that lunge is defenitely weird compared to how i was taught, but i'm no olympian lol), i was wodnering if i would be able to use parts of this video in my final project which is intended to encourage people to try and learn fencing
So that you can change directions more easily. If you advance and land with your heel you can, in theory, start a retreat before your toes touch the ground again.
most people dont know this is the foundation of BOXING!!!
And the foundation/inspiration for ballet.
foundation of martial arts
no shit.
Murali Daran Not Martial Art since they are older in the east but is the foundation of Jeet Kune Do from Bruce Lee.
What could possibly be the benefit of "more time in the air"? You don't have any control over your body at that point and the action takes a greater amount of time. Am I wrong?
The basics are the most important part, if you get those wrong, you're done for. You have to restart at zero.
Fencing is the best sport for myself and I am a fencer but your video is helpful I watched it when I was a beginner XOXO
thanks I do fencing at school and needed some tips you guys sorted my problem :)
I go to alliance fencing academy and just moved up to the older class and did 4 minutes of wall jumps 🙀 ugh so exsuating
Jillian Miller there is a game most people who teach fencing use and that my coach uses where if you do something wrong with what there telling you to do you have to do twenty push-ups and twenty back ups
Great manual
I want to do fencing so dang bad
I love the aesthetic of fencing!
Clearly you dont actually watch fencing. Not saying you have to like it but fencing requires an incredible amount of skill. You have to be in incredibly good shape and have lightning quick reflexes to even hope at being decent. But primarily its all about strategy, skilled fencers are thinking at LEAST 3-5 moves ahead as you would in chess. While it may appear not much is happening at times it it requires an great amount of strategy.
Niiice. It looks so elegant, I feel like learning it.
So confident. No head gear even during the third step.
foolish, never train or practice without your mask, that should be lesson nr.1 :)
I think that this video will be more informational about foil fencing if they mentioned about priority / right away, parries and reposts.
Thanks so much continue Race I like your fencing moves please post a vid on the 8 parries. Thanks you are awesome (and you too Miles)
Cảm ơn bạn
i'm an ametuer fencer. and my coach has one rule, only one. the tip of your weapon will NOT go above someones knee if they are not wearing a mask.
They are cuties. Im so interested in fencing now.
luvuless12 because of the people who you will probably never fence in real life and you also know not every fencer looks like them
luvuless12 Okay? Not everyone that fence is cute. The most people are really strict, but good at fencing.
Well, athletes tend to be more attractive
Eww
Having fenced for a couple years I will say that Miles's lunge is more traditional.
Great refresher
Well if you want them to not wait for eachother, watch epee fencing. The reason why they wait is because of "right of way" which is easier to understand if you look back at the history of fencing. Epee fencing doesn't have right of way, if I'm correct, so it quickly turns into a poking bout.
Congrats to Miles Chamley-Watson, 2013 Men's Foil World Champion.
LOL at the look on the other guy's face when the dude on the left demonstrates his lunge.
It would’ve been really fun if anyone teaches this in my country
Thank you this really helped me because I have fencing lessons TOMMOROW and I need quick training to impress a certain lady ;)
How's that workin for ya
There's no fencing in my country but i want to learn fencing so here i am HAHAHAHAHAHA
tell you guys what my boy maximus practices fencing till you see it you shouldn't judge it. it's elegant, lot's of technique i love seen my boy is those elegant postures.
Yeah - It was a little unusual. My coach would stress that stepping high like that makes me vulnerable (I'm on one leg and it takes longer to recover if the other guy does something unexpected), plus the idea of a lunge is to move towards the opponent as fast as possible, so time spent moving UP is time wasted
Having a high lunge can be beneficial. First off, it slows your lunge, which seems counterproductive but can be useful; for example, if you initiate a lunge attack and get parried before your front foot lands, you might actually have time to counter-parry and remise before you touch down. Secondly, in a point-scoring sense if you need to take priority to win the point, having a lunge that starts early and clearly signals to the referee 'yes I'm definitely attacking with intent' might sway a judgement call in your favour. (admittedly both these reasons probably apply more to sabre :P) Check out the Fencer's Edge channel, coach Tyler does a really good break down of different lunges, speed vs air time vs power etc.
how old should you be if you would like to start fencing?
depends if you want to do it competitively or for recreational uses. Current fencing champs usually start around 7 to 8 years old. They also go about the same way your typical Football player does in college, get scholarships from Universities (this is a way to expose them because they will eventually leave the country a lot for tournaments around the world). But don't let that stop you, fencing is challenging yet fun no matter how old you start!
In the UK we suggest 11 as a minimum
E. R. E. Jones in my first classes there where kids as young as six
Ryan Williams You need to be around seven at the youngest.
Starting at early age may give you an edge at first. But if you have an experienced instructor, you have talent and put a lot of effort into it, you can start at any age. (My fencing master used to be 80 and he was still quicker than me that I’m 20. And, not to brag, but speed was really one of my strongest weapons and, according to the same master, who btw did more that 75 years of fencing, I was on of the fastest fencers of my age in my country 🇮🇹)
Modern Olympic fencers are better trained, I think. You're right about the offensive risks in foil, though. I think epee fencers stand a good chance ;)
I have learned
i am now going to be silver chariot
Love it
As I look at it its a very sound lunge, it begins the drive with his rear leg but then adds the momentum of his hips once they are in motion and begin the downward motion. Begin with one, end with 2 allowing more speed for his lunge. Maybe weird is extra good?
I hope I can make it to the national competition soon 🙏 😌
Possibly not so much (since there's padding, different swords, and certain other moves), but certain things have stayed constant.
Nice
He does have a funny lunge
Better than a smoker's lunge.
LOOOL HIS LUNGE.
Yeah
MY SPORT
I WATCH A SHOW WITH FENCING ITS MARACOULES /TASLES OF LADYBUG AND CAT NOIR
You should make a prodigy on baseball!
Jeez, it looks so much cooler in movies....
Oh, nothing against anyone who does it, but maybe it's the rules. I would just want to swordplay. Hahaha
thats cuz in the movies their not doing real fencing, its just some sort of crappy sword fighting made to look good
8 years bby
Great stuff!!
Can the fencing swords- things cut you? Can it hurt?
Like I have a question.
My fencing teacher told me that in lunge you have to pick your leg so low and then attack but your lunge was...
Because you are learning to lunge
I've always been taught that your lunge should be forwards not up. I'd be really interested to hear why this guy goes up. Obviously it works for him since he is an Olympian, but surely more time in the air means more time for your opponent to get away. Again, I've been taught that any blade work you do should be before the lunge so therefore the lunge should be as short and sharp as possible.
Does anybody know what benefits a lunge going up rather than straight there would be?
Shout out to the Nike drip 🔥
i went from ballet, to aikido, and now fencing videos.
interesting.
I'm doing fencing lessons for the second day today
the best combination ! :D
We have to do a fencing scene for Julius caeser and I'm just here being anxious
Hello please vidio send vith flip trick
I’m 15 and I really want to fence, the problem is the closest fencing lessons are thirty minutes from my home and my parents refuse to drive me. Not only that my father doesn’t want me to get into it because he doesn’t like it. He wants me to play soccer or basketball. I told him no, and that I refuse to any other sport expect for fencing. I’m waiting to turn 16 so I can get my drivers license and drive over there myself 🙄🙄🙄.
My grandma kissed my feets as an infant saying, "he'll be a fencher."
I have wasted too much time feeling like a fuck up, never even tryin it out. Next week i'll go to our city and try it. If I would find just one hobby I would start to love my self I think. The reason for my bad mood, drug abuse, etc, is all because of a lack of hobby.
No - Fencing is derived from how practice weapons were used, not real swordfighting. Fencing has developed into a sport, so there are lots of rules and formalities . It's like comparing boxing to a back-alley fistfight.
The basic skills would work in a real fight, but if the other guy wasn't obaying those same rules - you'd be dead pretty fast.
that nike add doe
Excellent form…..but how’s your footwork?
🏴☠️
I play fencing and um a lefty too
LOOL the foil "en guarde" is so funny hahahaha
Bruce Lee and boxers use fencing originated footwork all of the time.
@@rylandelap4734 just Bruce lee, no all Japanese martial artists?
The urls you gave don't work with me for some reason?
Yes, I do...but define "a fencing sword for sports but looks like a real authentic sword" for me. Do you want a full weight blunted sword for say classical/historical fencing? Do you want a foil with a realistic hilt mounted with a stiffer blade? Do you want something you could use by "olympic" fencing standards? (so, a super whippy blade) Or do you just want a foil with something different than a pistol grip?
Feel free to send me a PM.
1st rule of fencing. Wear a mask when your opponent is pressing the tip of his weapon against you. Blades break.
