    One of the things I found in my brief experience with fencing is that it's a very equal opportunity sport. You don't have to be football player strong or basketball tall to be a good fencer. Plus it's a great workout....physically and mentally.

    I do fencing, I believe it’s pretty hard just like other sports but it’s very fast which can be confusing to people who go on with their daily lives. When I started off fencing I cried blood and tears because I was not quick enough to take down anyone I went against. My reflexes were slow. But I have now improved and I think fencing is usually about reflexes. My opinion. Foil is the hardest one I had been through. Frankly because my weapon had seemed to always hit the leg or head. But Epee is important with defence. I mean all are but defence is not my strongest skill. Keep in mind fencing is not about hurting each other

You have to be in incredibly good shape and have lightning quick reflexes to even hope at being decent. But primarily its all about strategy, skilled fencers are thinking at LEAST 3-5 moves ahead as you would in chess. While it may appear not much is happening at times it it requires an great amount of strategy.

    Well if you want them to not wait for eachother, watch epee fencing. The reason why they wait is because of "right of way" which is easier to understand if you look back at the history of fencing. Epee fencing doesn't have right of way, if I'm correct, so it quickly turns into a poking bout.

    Yeah - It was a little unusual. My coach would stress that stepping high like that makes me vulnerable (I'm on one leg and it takes longer to recover if the other guy does something unexpected), plus the idea of a lunge is to move towards the opponent as fast as possible, so time spent moving UP is time wasted

    • @fionatsang9353
      @fionatsang9353 2 года назад

      Having a high lunge can be beneficial. First off, it slows your lunge, which seems counterproductive but can be useful; for example, if you initiate a lunge attack and get parried before your front foot lands, you might actually have time to counter-parry and remise before you touch down. Secondly, in a point-scoring sense if you need to take priority to win the point, having a lunge that starts early and clearly signals to the referee 'yes I'm definitely attacking with intent' might sway a judgement call in your favour. (admittedly both these reasons probably apply more to sabre :P) Check out the Fencer's Edge channel, coach Tyler does a really good break down of different lunges, speed vs air time vs power etc.

    how old should you be if you would like to start fencing?

    • @margaesperanza
      @margaesperanza 8 лет назад +2

      depends if you want to do it competitively or for recreational uses. Current fencing champs usually start around 7 to 8 years old. They also go about the same way your typical Football player does in college, get scholarships from Universities (this is a way to expose them because they will eventually leave the country a lot for tournaments around the world). But don't let that stop you, fencing is challenging yet fun no matter how old you start!

      Starting at early age may give you an edge at first. But if you have an experienced instructor, you have talent and put a lot of effort into it, you can start at any age. (My fencing master used to be 80 and he was still quicker than me that I’m 20. And, not to brag, but speed was really one of my strongest weapons and, according to the same master, who btw did more that 75 years of fencing, I was on of the fastest fencers of my age in my country 🇮🇹)

    Modern Olympic fencers are better trained, I think. You're right about the offensive risks in foil, though. I think epee fencers stand a good chance ;)

    As I look at it its a very sound lunge, it begins the drive with his rear leg but then adds the momentum of his hips once they are in motion and begin the downward motion. Begin with one, end with 2 allowing more speed for his lunge. Maybe weird is extra good?

  • @towelmuppet

    I've always been taught that your lunge should be forwards not up. I'd be really interested to hear why this guy goes up. Obviously it works for him since he is an Olympian, but surely more time in the air means more time for your opponent to get away. Again, I've been taught that any blade work you do should be before the lunge so therefore the lunge should be as short and sharp as possible.
    Does anybody know what benefits a lunge going up rather than straight there would be?

    I’m 15 and I really want to fence, the problem is the closest fencing lessons are thirty minutes from my home and my parents refuse to drive me. Not only that my father doesn’t want me to get into it because he doesn’t like it. He wants me to play soccer or basketball. I told him no, and that I refuse to any other sport expect for fencing. I’m waiting to turn 16 so I can get my drivers license and drive over there myself 🙄🙄🙄.

    I have wasted too much time feeling like a fuck up, never even tryin it out. Next week i'll go to our city and try it. If I would find just one hobby I would start to love my self I think. The reason for my bad mood, drug abuse, etc, is all because of a lack of hobby.

    No - Fencing is derived from how practice weapons were used, not real swordfighting. Fencing has developed into a sport, so there are lots of rules and formalities . It's like comparing boxing to a back-alley fistfight.
    The basic skills would work in a real fight, but if the other guy wasn't obaying those same rules - you'd be dead pretty fast.

    The urls you gave don't work with me for some reason?
    Yes, I do...but define "a fencing sword for sports but looks like a real authentic sword" for me. Do you want a full weight blunted sword for say classical/historical fencing? Do you want a foil with a realistic hilt mounted with a stiffer blade? Do you want something you could use by "olympic" fencing standards? (so, a super whippy blade) Or do you just want a foil with something different than a pistol grip?
    Feel free to send me a PM.

    1st rule of fencing. Wear a mask when your opponent is pressing the tip of his weapon against you. Blades break.
