I would never sink my money on the 1st of a new generation. I'd be waiting for them to iron out all them "technology" glitches that u just know they'll have! Ranger still king....
D-Max hands down. Isuzu has nailed it in every aspect on how a pickup truck should be. May not be as plush as the Ranger or too hardcore as the Hilux but in this segment, pure reliability and durability is king alongside with the right balance of everything. Can't wait to see a head to head toss up with the Triton soon.
Isuzu has more rear leg room with rear power. But "Where the Isuzu gets one takeaway bag hook, Toyota gets 2 that's pretty clever" That settles it then! 😆
I’m leaning towards a D-Max SX. Gets all the good mechanicals, engine, safety, towing etc - and i don’t need leather, 9” screen, dual climate, 17” rims etc. For the $10,000 (est) saving I’ll get tyres, canopy, 2” lift, tune, snorkel, bull bar, diff breathers, canvas seat covers etc (i know this all costs more than $10k). I’ll be getting a tow bar as well. Will use for work & 4x4 outings. Just seems like a sensible deployment of my $$. The 3lt engine is very tuneable & pretty bullet proof.
everist22 I’m in the same boat and looking at same set up. Just wish the price hike wasn’t so much for the new model but understand why given the major jump from the last one.
Likewise. I have ordered 2 of the Dmax SX single cabs in the 4x2 variant for work and weekend suburban use. Very impressed by the level of features fitted to the base model ute (shares many features that are fitted to the flagship model). SX model comes with 17" wheels (steel) as standard.
Brad Yes - my mistake SX has 17’s. I agree i think the base models have all the important stuff - including safety features. Enjoy them - you’ll get the upfront tax depreciation as well i think?
Hi everist22 - I've been thinking the same, but given the promotion around all new suspension, I'm wondering what the the impact/effect might have on the new suspension by giving it a lift. Same with the tune. What's your thinking around this? I'm leaning toward the LS-U, but I must admit features that come standard on the ranger (push button start, towbar, tub liner, tailgate assist, 12 volt to tub) are missing and that's what is holding me back at the moment.
Jeff Fisher Hi Jeff - I’d be lying if i commented on suspension but I’m sure organizations like Old Man Emu (ARB) will have all that developed and sorted. My thoughts on the engine are that the Dmax 3lt is ‘under tuned’ - by this i mean that it is capable of easily producing more power. Personally I’m not a fan of 2lt twin turbo diesels that the Ranger has - i just think they work that much harder. Regarding spec levels - it’s really a personal decision. I want a good platform with a solid engine, all the safety, reasonable amenities (Apple car play etc), all the 4x4 capability (rear lockers etc). I don’t need carpet, electric seat, 9” screen, 18” rims, auto start, parking sensors (SX has rear camera) etc. I’m budgeting to spend that money on stuff i ‘need’ - tyres, canopy, snorkel, bar work etc. Most of the time i will use the vehicle solo for work and weekend 4x4 (with my wife). Our family vehicle is a RR Sport so I’m not considering interior ‘comfort’ - I’m more considering value for money, fit for purpose, and capability.

It's because toyota wanted to clear older model stock hilux before putting the upgraded model on sale. Just give the newer hilux some time now they're starting to get into the roads again and see if it can regain the title for best seller.

@@mixalis6168 got two Hilux. The new model has a good interior. But if you seek confort not looking to the price tag, a mate of mine, told me wonders about the Mercedes-Benz X class.

All three of these look great. I'm not really bothered by some of the small things that the Hilux is lacking, and I also don't care for all the fancy safety features on the Ranger and Isuzu. If I had to go out and buy one of these three right now, it would be the Hilux. Ford has a really spotty track record when it comes to reliability, and the interior just feels too cheap for what it costs. The Isuzu made a massive leap, I honestly thought it was just going to be another massive disappointment like the last one. The interior is pretty nice, the infotainment needs at least one knob for volume control, I'm not a fan of those buttons. The reason I wouldn't buy one is the exterior. It's just too ugly for my taste. The Hilux has the best looking interior and exterior in my opinion. The extra 20kw and 50nm is a welcome boost. I won't be buying any of these though. I'm gonna go with the Hilux Legend 50 we have here in South Africa.
D-max no doubt, good run for the money, loaded with safety tech including a first centre airbag and very tough looking truck unlike the outdated facelift hilux which really hasn't changed much since it's release model and is so expensive with very basic eqipment/features not to mention the dpf issues that toyota has been having.
Believe it or not alot of people buy the Hilux simply because it's cheaper to service in my country than the Dmax and parts too are cheaper, also simplicity isn't the issue here since most of those gadgets and stuff usually get replaced anyway. The Dmax looks like the deal here but it's already more expensive than the Hilux in my country and the ranger is only bought by the government since it's the only entity rich enough to meet the cost of purchase and maintenance.
I'll go with the D Max after watching the Conquest review. I only like the Conquest appearance but for safety features and performance the D Max is at par.
My Ford Everest Turbo “Broke” with only 58K on the clock. It seems there is a massive problem with the ford Turbos that no one is talking about! Sold it immediately after being repaired by ford and got a Hilux. Stay away as far as possible from ford Shitboxs. You have been warned.
My mechanic who is a car genius said to me last week he is starting to see a lot of 3-5 year old rangers with major engine failures. Apparently ford are happy to sell a car to their customers with a very highly strung engine. The 2.8 Toyota may not have the best power numbers out of these cars, however Toyota buyers can sleep easy knowing that their 60k investment hasn’t rolled off the factory floor tuned to within an inch of its life. It’s also probably why old Hilux utes for sale today have 300000ks on the clock and still sell for big money. People trust Toyota to build a car that will keep going and will be worth something in 15 years time.
I still prefer the 3.2l 5cyl ranger engine over the small 4 pot. Just feels and sounds so much better when you drive it regardless of what the numbers on paper say.
A cause for more IRL performance than the numbers could be the torque curve, i.e. is the power down low, which is not measured by peak power. Low down power is what you experience driving all day.
Ranger dual zone Climate control, Hilux single air con, Ranger 3 settings for front seats heater, Hilux on or off, Ranger self parking ...... etc, etc etc
Why does every reviewer have to say ‘to quantify first’? Yes, they are all great cars but just give the answer. So happy the presenter asked the most important question. If it was your money, what would you buy? DMax won three for three. Congrats. Great review.
Not a bad review at all. Always liked the Ford. Grew up being a Ford man. But unfortunately I had too many problems with my XLT bi-turbo. It was such a nice car. However let me down too many times. I'll stick to my basic '20 Hilux SR. Hopefully one day either Ford get their act together with build quality or the Hilux gains signicant comfort. IaI'mnot that fazed about the small luxury add ons. I mean I'll have them buy they aren't make or break. Just want the drive quality of the Ford with the reliability of the Toyota. Maybe the D'max is the go 🤔
Dmax for me due to the the tech upgrades. The price is hard to ignore as well. Looking forward to the off-road and towing test. I the dmax performs well off-road, I may trade my NP300 STX (which does everything I ask of it) for one. Will be interesting to see available GVM upgrades and ECU re-map for even more torque.....
i do think the Isuzu has come a long way, The price point and package is on point. i love how you guys have picked up on volume knobs, buttons or screen, just don't work well. the ranger has a certain stigma attached to it i just cant get past, now that holden commodore is finished i feel this has taken its place and every young soft city tradie has to own one. the hilux i feel will be the most reliable for all conditions, easiest to work on purely the Toyota engineering that comes with it makes it favourable in the rural regions. but hey, if they made 79 series cruisers in auto, with a 15k less price. nobody would buy a hilux.
Mate, we’re not in the market for a home theatre but I like that sliding sun viser and door locking lights when the bush gangsters come out after dark.
I just took a Ford Ranger for a drive today 3.2 L what a beautiful wagon so quiet luxury and yet it’s a Ute and I was very impressed . I took a 2 L twin turbo that went beautiful too I don’t know which I want, I’m a bit lost and they drive so beautiful and it turns on a pin just everything about it is so good . It’s so light and feels better than a car to drive. I’m going to go to Toyota tomorrow morning and take a Toyota Ute for a drive and see how it goes . This will be interesting
Planning to buy a brand new ute this year, I really value reliability, longevity and ease/cost of service/repair and dealer network in Australia, D Max is looking better and better the more I do my homework. Isuzu have always been a truck builder, workhorse stuff, lasts year after year to earn a living with, I'm hoping that DNA remains with the new D Max.
True, however don't know why people make a sound and dance about? They probably should have got it right from the factory, but wheels are one of the easiest things to change on a car!
A good fair review..... Toyota mustn’t be throwing cash around anymore..... own and love isuzu but it’s hard to go past the ranger .... excited to see what the 2022 ranger will be like and how these other guys keep up.
For me it's all about reliability and that's why Toyota is the best seller. I have no time for silly breakdown nonsense while out there in remote Australia. Hence I'm about to buy a 3rd Hilux. The last two have never let me down. I expect the same again with the 2021 model.
Having driven all of them, and being a mechanic, working on all of them, I do not rate the hilux for the money you pay, and the persistent problems I am fixing, its ridiculous. The ranger 2 litre is amazing, and the new Dmax is worlds apart, however, I spent my 72k on the new manual Amarok. The new Manual Amarok is incredible. If I liked autos, I would have bought the wildtrack 2 litre. But the new manual Amarok is so much fun to drive, and comes with all the conventional 4x4 high/low range, as said the braking, wet wheather control is superb, and i can drive a 300km round trip on $30 worth of diesel. And with 165kw(180kw on overboost) and 500nm(dynoing has show thats actually wheel torque) my 0-100 is around 7.5 seconds and it tows like a freight train. I am looking forward to the new Ranger/Amarok built vehicle next year!
It’s an easy decision for me, D MAX and not just because it’s cheaper it’s also better value for money in my opinion, even the base model 2WD single cab chassis automatic is only about two thousand dollars dearer than the equivalent previous model and it’s now a much better vehicle. I like the mechanical specs better even though the new engine hasn’t been proven for reliability yet, it’s the brand that I would trust the most for reliability. Most brands aren’t very good at honouring expensive warranty claims and this is why reliability is a priority for me. The only problem with ISUZU is that they take too long to wear out if you need that to happen to justify updating, by the time my last one wore out it was really outdated. So I would say that the best time to buy an ISUZU is when they release a new model. I also think that they need to have tiger stripes on the orange ones.
I m about to put my money on a new ute and wildtrack it is for me. Dmax is worth considering but i live on a twisting poorly maintained road and nothing handles that better, especially towing as the ranger.
I love the dual cab utes. But one has ever done a review with baby capsule and booster seat in the back at the same time like a young family would have. This would help a lot in choosing Prado or hilux or similar.
Guys, you never mentioned the new Hilux's 6month service interval (kms aside) to maintain that new engine's output. Even Toyota getting concerned about 500nm on tap now days.
For your off road test: most people will install aftermarket suspension. How do each lent themselves to suspension modification? Are additional parts required in the modification above the basics, ie control arms. What is the typical cost of installing approx a 2" lift
A dmax is now 50k used to be 40... A triton is 34k i got one for the past 5 years bashed it all around Australia still going strong! Saying that if I can get a Isuzu for around 40k I'll definitely buy one and build it with an extra 10k and make it a beast of road
Make it $70K by the time you get the necessary extras....Car Companies are rubbing there hands together....They don’t even need to spend much on development, just a few tech upgrades as been the same ladder frame design for years 😂
Thank you, + & - on all 3. Please do a hard, real hard, not sissy, offroad test and also bring in the Raptor and v6 Amarok. Also a towing test of course. We in SA also have to follow you guys for honest reviews, although we also have good tests, but you always get the new models first.
Janveer Raise I’m the same when it comes to my 4x4 adventures, however, saying that, a number of others (say, 35%) in my driving group can’t drive stick. Also, I’ve always found it faster selling a auto.
Injector problems in the first batch of 2.0 engines and transmission fluid pump failure more recently in the 10sp auto. Over 21000 of them recalled. That’s why my brother in law bought the good old 3.2 5cyl
Hey CarAdvice, though DMax lower Kw/Nw, did you feel that it was more relaxed in accelerating? The specs of all three appear to show the DMax achieves 300Nm at lower revs compared to the others. I may be wrong, but does this mean more linear acceleration and less gear changes. I drove a Ranger recently with boat in tow and while no issues, it shifted through the gears - a lot. Would welcome thoughts as everyone raves about Nm but may not be that straightforward in this test. Personally, being the fastest of the lights is not a key in my decision on next Ute.
That 450Nm output is available from 1600rpm to 2600rpm, where the engine spends most of its time and the main reason why this engine feels so flexible. Digging deeper, 400Nm (still a healthy number) is on tap between 1400rpm and 3250rpm - virtually your entire operating rev range.

Great improvement that D Max, will change my Ranger
I still prefer the 3.2l 5cyl ranger engine over the small 4 pot. Just feels and sounds so much better when you drive it regardless of what the numbers on paper say.
A cause for more IRL performance than the numbers could be the torque curve, i.e. is the power down low, which is not measured by peak power. Low down power is what you experience driving all day.
Wow so fast and updated to the latest pick up trucks, thank you.
Proud to be isuzu owner here!
Another interesting comparison would be including the Wildtrak 3.2, there are a lot of people like Sam who prefer a larger displacement engine.
Ranger dual zone Climate control, Hilux single air con, Ranger 3 settings for front seats heater, Hilux on or off, Ranger self parking ...... etc, etc etc
Dmax manual cover looks a lot faster and more reliable than the electronic ranger version
Why does every reviewer have to say ‘to quantify first’? Yes, they are all great cars but just give the answer. So happy the presenter asked the most important question. If it was your money, what would you buy? DMax won three for three. Congrats. Great review.
Said thing is when it comes to value for money they only consider the initial buy price.
Maybe the D'max is the go 🤔
Damn that d max is awesome!!!! That 3 litre 4JJ engine with that update sells it for me and many I know 100%
For the offroad, I hope you can review how easy are they to clean after? Which has the most hidden/difficult areas to keep clean, etc...
Interesting point Jullian!
D-MAX baby!
Australia and all south america love and build their countries using Utes... Specially middle size Utes! 😎👍
If money doesn't matter, ranger.. But as utes are often used as workhorses. So maintenance should be kept at a minimal so I'll go with the dmax..
i do think the Isuzu has come a long way, The price point and package is on point. i love how you guys have picked up on volume knobs, buttons or screen, just don't work well. the ranger has a certain stigma attached to it i just cant get past, now that holden commodore is finished i feel this has taken its place and every young soft city tradie has to own one. the hilux i feel will be the most reliable for all conditions, easiest to work on purely the Toyota engineering that comes with it makes it favourable in the rural regions. but hey, if they made 79 series cruisers in auto, with a 15k less price. nobody would buy a hilux.
Mate, we’re not in the market for a home theatre but I like that sliding sun viser and door locking lights when the bush gangsters come out after dark.
Thanks . I have been looking at the sx or ls models in duel cab 4x4 and put on a tray & canopy . Hopefully order one in the next couple of weeks
That Dmax is cleaning up. I'll be getting one when I'm due for an update. It does everything better and that interior is excellent.
You've just helped me decide guys! Thank you
Our pleasure!
“No fences around here”. There’s literally a fence in the background.
You probably have a lot to learn
Whoever designed the wheels on the Dmax needs an uppercut
Even the previous generation looked much better
True, however don't know why people make a sound and dance about? They probably should have got it right from the factory, but wheels are one of the easiest things to change on a car!
Keeping sunraisa rims alive
Yeah, it looks more like a fan, smh
Indeed
I’m a huge ranger guy...I’d still choose it but damn that d max is good value for money
The only people criticising the Hilux are those who can’t afford it lol the Hilux will always reign supreme.
My hilux has done almost half a million kms and its still going strong.
I choose the Hilux even if am in asleep
A good fair review..... Toyota mustn’t be throwing cash around anymore..... own and love isuzu but it’s hard to go past the ranger .... excited to see what the 2022 ranger will be like and how these other guys keep up.
100%
Leaning towards the new DMax, but only problem is the dealership network here. I guess I'm sticking to the Hilux till I see a v6 Raptor
Isuzu D'max is the name of the game.
Thanks for sharing Tim, maybe some speed stripes too.
CarAdvice.com GRRRRRR
Biggest compliment of all is when everyone dismisses the Hilux, still the king, always will be.
Not now king lol
The D max does it for me, but those wheels...awkward
Rims are cheap to buy , way cheaper then tyres
I’m a Ford guy but the Dmax is a very nice looking car. I would probably choose the Ranger but not by much!
I'd get the new D Max Arctic Trucks when/ if it comes out...
It just seems like an "honest" ute...
Ranger all the way, can't beat Aussie designed and engineered.
I go for dmax, very durable engine
Just ordered the volcanic orange x terrain dmax. Test drove the Lsu and the tec is amazing
I m about to put my money on a new ute and wildtrack it is for me. Dmax is worth considering but i live on a twisting poorly maintained road and nothing handles that better, especially towing as the ranger.
@@Virkgabs Still better than keeping $h*tbox hilux
hilux has more power & torque but still lost to dmax 0 - 100.
For me is the All new Isuzu D-Max! 💪💗
so here in NZ the d-max ax-terrain and ranger wildtrak are the same price what do you choose now!
waiting to see a video review with a 3 ton caravan behind the dmax... I'm 85% convinced atm
I love the dual cab utes. But one has ever done a review with baby capsule and booster seat in the back at the same time like a young family would have.
This would help a lot in choosing Prado or hilux or similar.
About to pick up my new Ranger Raptor next week. Good times 😁
Guys, you never mentioned the new Hilux's 6month service interval (kms aside) to maintain that new engine's output. Even Toyota getting concerned about 500nm on tap now days.
Yeh 6 months sounds like a money tap to me. No way a diesel engine should need 6 month servicing
For your off road test: most people will install aftermarket suspension. How do each lent themselves to suspension modification? Are additional parts required in the modification above the basics, ie control arms. What is the typical cost of installing approx a 2" lift
I choose the Iveco Daily 4x4. That is the Best dual cab Ute available in Aus.
A dmax is now 50k used to be 40...
A triton is 34k i got one for the past 5 years bashed it all around Australia still going strong!
Saying that if I can get a Isuzu for around 40k I'll definitely buy one and build it with an extra 10k and make it a beast of road
10 years ago the Amarok was refined and quiet doing 1000km+ off a full tank with light steering
Dmax takes it 👍
Fair comparison and comments in all three utes. Like!
Just ordered a SR5+ Hilux 2 weeks ago, hopefully it will be here by Christmas, nothing beats a Hilux.
Ranger is the best 100%
i like the look of the new Dmax but find it hard to go past the 3.2 Wildtrack
Seriously $60K for a Ute, they're taking the piss.
Precisely why I bought the Triton
Make it $70K by the time you get the necessary extras....Car Companies are rubbing there hands together....They don’t even need to spend much on development, just a few tech upgrades as been the same ladder frame design for years 😂
These are utes...for the suits, of course they'll charge through the arse
Covid has shown us that the world is full of idiots, hilux sheep have just backed that up 100%
Thank you, + & - on all 3. Please do a hard, real hard, not sissy, offroad test and also bring in the Raptor and v6 Amarok. Also a towing test of course. We in SA also have to follow you guys for honest reviews, although we also have good tests, but you always get the new models first.
What model year is the Ford Ranger in this video?
DMax for now . Waiting for the off road comparison
Janveer Raise I’m the same when it comes to my 4x4 adventures, however, saying that, a number of others (say, 35%) in my driving group can’t drive stick. Also, I’ve always found it faster selling a auto.
Errr what about all the issues with the 2.0 10sp ranger? 3.2 5cyl any day of the week.
what issues I have one never had a problem
Injector problems in the first batch of 2.0 engines and transmission fluid pump failure more recently in the 10sp auto. Over 21000 of them recalled. That’s why my brother in law bought the good old 3.2 5cyl
Nice job
How long before you blow a turbo on the ranger
Awesome comparison review guys keep up the good work 👍
Hey CarAdvice, though DMax lower Kw/Nw, did you feel that it was more relaxed in accelerating?
Bring that Isuzu to the states! 😍
I still love the old puma 5 cilinder diesel ford.
New Ranger next year will raise the bar again
