Totally agree. His rationale for going as slow as possible was stupid. Anyone who's done any offroad driving will know you'll often need to get a bit of momentum up. You don't just go at a crawl and when you stop, give up.
Also note that when he did the first 3 utes he said he was keeping them at low speed and slow, yet with the last 4 or so, his words were "had to give it more momentum to get it up there" and had to give it more beans to get it there.. Not exactly sure he gave the same test to all vehicles.
RPM counter displayed would help legitimise revs given to each vehicle. The first three vehicles did not appear to be given the same throttle encouragement.
Iv taken my stock 2021 Triton GLS to tracks 1000x harder than these and had not a single issue. Personally i loved the 4x4 capabilities and hill decent control. for my budget its perfect and i likely would have chosen it if i had any amount of money.

Crazy how price never comes into the conversation. The GWM is 38,000 vs 60 to 65,000 for the others. The Amarok doesn't even have rear airbags a disgrace in 2021.
Yet, in crash tests comparing these vehicles with rear airbags to the Amarok.. The Amarok still took the least damage from side impact and was deemed safer haha
Henry Lawson Mate indeed there is a very real chance that it would blow up.But then if you only drive it on the occasional trip to the supermarket it might last till the warranty expires.
@@leonwakefield7285 how is that possible? Last time I checked there’s only one other Ute with better warranty terms. So if it’s so rubbish and cheap why would it have one of the best warranties in the class? Have you driven every Ute mentioned here to compare?
Not nervous, driving intentionally slowly. I'm testing to find the weaknesses of the traction systems of each car, rather than seeing how many cars can get up the challenge. It's not as exciting to watch, I get that. But I was more focussed on results.
I just have to say when you're comparing a GWM that's half the price of a Hilux in the same segment I think you still need to respect it. Someone who is all about camping or off-roading very often then you know where to put your money. But if you're just looking for something around town and use it as a 4wd every now and then then are you really going to go for $80k+?
Nothing in the hilux if you get top spec all that comes with it is stickers or blacked out grill that you can paint yourself, and plastic fenders, no performance upgrades
@@TheJoshuadavis73 you could probably add money on top of the GWM just to make it even better off roading. Put better suspension, lift, tyres, bull bar basically everything you need and it would still be cheaper than the top spec Hilux.
@@okbruhh a bull bar doesn’t make anything better off-road just adds weight and more specifically, weight to the nose. Utes seem to be typically rear drive biased yet are far too light in the rear (unladen).
@@jerrymyahzcat I know it doesn’t make it better but it’s more protection though and it would be needed especially if you hittin bush where there is roo’s around.
Varied momentum was clearly an issue and seriously affected the credibility of your tests. Was so obvious. I favour the HiLux and Amarok so don’t care about the results but wonder who’s paying you the most.
The Navara has been nowhere in ute comparisons for the last few years suddenly after a face lift it comes second? And the triton doesn’t even place after winning a another mega ute comparison last year? 🤷♂️
There's lots of money in the ute market. In test like this it's so easy to manipulate market view.Just dropping few PSI's in off-road test and yohoo we have a winner! As usual don't trust everything you see in media
It looks as though you never used the off road mode in the GWM, and simply used 4L for these tests? From my understanding, the off road mode changes the throttle mapping and would have made the vehicle much more controlled. It also modifies the mapping of the traction control system. I can't say I have had a chance to use it but it seems to make a difference from what I have read and seen.
I think adjusting tyre pressures would have evened out the field (the others should have got up the hill), but the hilux going up without the diff lock says enough. I have found the same thing in my Fortuner... the TC is so good, the diff lock usually doesn't provide much advantage and even can be a hindrance by turning the TC off.
I drive a 79 series and also an old ml triton for outback work and Gotta say the triton is a light weight mountain goat which dominated the south Australian flinders ranges tracks with ease , I find this comparison lacking although I do not disagree with the winner,
Wombat holes…? You know…you could drive around them…? When we owned a Triton and went into off road areas we constantly saw guys driving deliberately through the roughest deepest holes they could find on the way. We picked a way around the huge holes and got criticised for taking “the chicken track”. I used to reply “You mean the ‘I’m going to get home without wrecking my vehicle track…?” 😂
Enjoyed the video, thanks guys. And im not questioning the hilux & navara doing as well as they did. That said, it definitely felt like there was bias involved whilst testing. The hang up on Amarok not having low range is clearly a personal opinion not performance based. As it clearly out performed the Ranger & the off road mode comfortably steps in strong instead of low range.
I have a 2014 4 cylinder Amarok, and it is the most awesome and phenomenal vehicle I have ever owned! Cannot afford the 6 cylinder, yet. My 4 banger has never let me down, I am on my way to Birdsville right now, towing my 36 year old caravan, it is not missing a beat! These guys are bias, and I do not put a lot of faith in anything they are saying. Volkswagen Amarok for the win!
The fact they had to even mention 'brown paper bags of money' says it all really. Reviews like these are a bit of a joke. I guess they could be trying to create controversy for views, out of sheer desperation.
It's because we knew that comments like this one were coming, they always do. Apparently I'm as corrupt as Roger Rogerson, if you believe the RUclips comments section.
Yes of course we used low-range, with and without the locking diff. What the video didn't show was us getting extra stuck in the Triton with the rear locker turned on, not helped by the big rear overhang - Sam
@@Drivecomau in what way could the "big rear overhang" affect the rear diff lock or cause it to get any more stuck?🤔 It actually doesn't make sense to even mention that when it comes to traction on a loose surface, other than to purely trash talk that particular car...
I know a few people have complained that certain cars didn’t get gas. But, I’ve been on 4wd trips with others that have varied experience and this often happens. Also, the first few people tend to make it up easier than those in the rear because the track is torn up. You would be surprised how many people don’t have a lot of confidence in 4wd driving. Regardless, this is a lot of money to pay for a lot of cars that struggled. I don’t see the point of paying 60 grand without accessories for a car that may or may not make it up the hill. Mate recently bought the Canon and regardless of the review on this test. Its incredible. 40k with towbar.
Mitsubishi got no differential lock the oldest model Jeep Mitsubishi using this,so Mitsubishi is the advance in transmission technology and the best four wheel drive in rally racing long distance racing since the beginning 60s
Finding it hard to reconcile how the 4WD 24-7 review rated the triton the best on tough tracks and yet in this test it couldn't get up that little hill?
You nailed it buddy - my thoughts as well - triton seems to kill the others - they just dont have to blow their horn about it - not to mention that other than the amarok the trition is the only 4x4 with "TRUE" 4x4 drive train all the others are rear wheel drive only with a diff locker.
@@Glenno7 May I ask you Very nicely to Please explain your comment. Because I do not know and understand. ''Amarok and Triton is the only 4x4 with TRUE 4x4 drivetrain. - All the others are RWD only with diff locker''. WHAT is the TRUE 4x4 drive train Please? Kind regards.
@@tpv59 Ok, the Amarok is a full time all wheel drive, meaning it drives all 4 wheels at the same time always, and you can't turn it off. The top two models of the Triton have the ability to switch on (alternate) between 2WD and 4WD and also they have a rear diff locker that you can engage in high or low range. Hilux/Ranger/BT50/Navara/Great wall/Isuzu/LDV/Colorado etc do not have 4WD systems, they are only 2WD (rear wheel) that can engage a diff locker that will make all 4 wheel spin at the same time to get you out of a sticky spot but you must disengage it straight away or you will do damage to the drivetrain especially if you try to steer the car on a high traction surface. So IMO, if you are going to spend that much money on a so called 4x4 you would at least want to know that is is a "real" 4x4. To me this test (the hill climb part) was about which company gives you the widest and grapiest tyres - as most serious 4x4'ers will put bigger wider grippier tyres on anyway. If you check out other tests on RUclips where they use the same tyres on all the vehicles, you will see a much different outcome. For your interest, check out this RUclips ruclips.net/video/Ld1bMp5Hh1I/видео.html @ 2:22 they say that they used the same tyres on all vehicles, and if you don't want to watch the whole thing skip ahead to 30:50 for results. Hope this helps, Terry.
I’m a Hilux owner and love it but let’s be serious here, high 50k prices for this group V high 30s for the GWM. With 5k spent on the GWM for a filter guard, set of tyres, under body skid plates and a re map of the throttle response it would have chewed up and spat out anything else on this test with 15k still in your pocket. Surely some emphasis has to be put on initial outlay for a genuine comparison, surely.
Good Day, GWM UTE on a personal note I don't think the guys had an understanding of the vehicle you were actually getting it to do things it never does I am from South Africa and i have pitched my GWM against similar circumstances and i did not get stuck once and i did not have wheelspin once with standard cooper tyres at 1.8 bar. In fact the 4x4 Instructor with me that have done 3 africa 4x4 tours admitted its up their with the best he has driven Toyota, Land Cruiser, Ranger
So if you move the fuel filter.. and installed an I drive throttle controller the gwm becomes a much better off-road Ute.. for $37K plus $800 for the upgrades.. sounds good to me 👌🏻👍🏻 When it’s 20K cheaper than almost every other Ute with better on road safety tech and the one of only two Utes with an airbag between the driver and passenger, it seems like a winner to me.
Very good second place for the Nissan Navara, here in my country Chile (SouthAmerica) these facelift Navara is selling very good, is second place in sales but with problems of stock, if not I think it would be the number 1 in Chile. We get the Navara from the factory of Nissan Mexico.
Ranger can fit larger tyres than Hilux. 33s with a 2" lift. 35s with a 3" lift and upper control arms. Hilux you have to start cutting into the chassis just to fit 33s. Can also use diff lock in 2wd on Ranger. When you factor all that in, it's a better choice than Hilux. Best modified offroad is between Nissan and Ford.
When it comes to offroad that is where the Hilux excels, I think the Triton is up there too. The only disappointment is the DMax, I was rooting for it to win
I don't think you guys did very well on that hill climb, I am pretty sure that 4WD Australia's Ronny Dahl would have been able to get each and every one of those Vehicles up the hill, so would Built Not Bought's shuan. Sorry guys but I think you could have better tested these vehicles to thier off road potential capabilities.
Are any of the testers or any part of this film produced being paid or have or had any sponsored deals from any car or vehicle manufacturer that us viewers should be made aware of?
You can get a triton with a lift kit, 33" tires, in board air compressor, recovery gear, bullbar, winch and more, still undercutting the price of the Toyota or Ford.
Tyre width and tread would make a lot of difference. The 245 profile vs 265 increases grip enough to change equation. Hilux looked liked it had 285s. Standard diff breathers also should count.
You legends!! Thanks for getting nitty gritty and pointing out the stuff under the car - that’s what the real buyers want to see. Good shit - keep it up - point out all the things that aren’t bad but are enough to ruin your day when you’re in the middle of nowhere!

Just keep it there so we can see the how it does it to get out of that rut. You changing views just when it shoudnt be changed.
As a happy owner of a Bi turbo Ranger I think these results are perfect. If I was more into my aggressive off-roading then the Hilux is the no brainer in my opinion. The Ranger is a better all rounder for my needs. I would have hoped the little Triton did better.
Totally agree with the majority of reviews, the first 3 Ute's were driven completely different than the rest. You cannot tell me that the GWM performs better than triton, dmax, bt50.
Have you driven one? Do yourself a favour and go down to the dealership and take one for a test drive. Will definitely make you think twice about paying an extra 30k on a ranger/dmax. Also the accelerator isn’t that touchy, I’d say he was punching it cause he hadn’t figured out how to work the delay.
I have a new BT50 and it’s terrible. Had none stop issues and I have experienced same as in this video. Watching stock cars pass me up sandy track all I was going to do was make giant holes in.
Great Wall doesn’t even have a crash test, why would you include that in a review? People should avoid any car without a crash test, specially one with the Steed background. Would be better to do LDV at least for a budget Chinese ute.

Quick question. Why always say that the lack of a low range transfer case is a serious compromise off road for the WV Amarok, but there's no 4x4 test in any review where this ute doesn't perform incredibly. There's always the excuse, of an hypothetical scenario that nobody seems to proof
Test driving the little 4 pot ranger I still prefer the 3.2l 5cyl any day of the week. I know on paper it doesn't have the same power as the twin turbo but it just feels like it has so much more grunt at low RPM. Literally indeling around town at about 1600 - 1800 RPM. Perhaps it's the gearbox? Don't know but it just feels so much nicer to drive. Not to mention engine acoustics. The 5 cyl has a really nice engine sound to it while the 4 pot has that tipical buzzy and boring 4 cyl sound. Hope the rumors about that 3.5l V6 Diesel in a future Hilux GR will happen. That a actually sounds really exciting
Very good test. It's the Nissan that caught my attention. The New Navara has coil springs at the back that contributes to a very smooth ride. Driving the Navara is a good experience, but it's under powered for its size and its got a dead spot between 115 km/h and 140 km/h in the automatic and that's an issue because that is the speed range that's used for highway overtaking. Nissan should have upped the engin power and fine tuned the auto box. It could have done with a slightly lower 1st gear to eliminate turbo lag. Sound damping and ride quiality is very good, but Nissan missed the boat with keeping the top line engine at 140 kW and 450 NM. The cabin also looks outdated compared to the competitors, the auto gear shift looks very dated and the steering does not have the same adjustment as the competitors. But its biggest downfall is the underpowered engine, its not just about the power figures, its the way it uses the power, in a test it was even beaten by the Chinese 4x4 with a 2 liter enige and only 120 kW.
In the hill test, the driver contradicted himself, with d first 3 cars he wanted to go slow, wid d rest he went for momentum.... Its nt fair... Viewers msr apply brains b4 putting a lyk

You can't always use momentum like when pressed up against a wall or a very steep rocky hill where momentum can cause roll overs, which i have seen happen, so I think the test is reasonable.
He didn't use the same momentum for all vehicles which is unfair. Your point about tipping over is valid but I could take the triton and put the accelerator to the ground and get up that hill without tipping
New game. Everytime the words ‘traction contol’ are used take a drink. You’ll be passed out by the end of the video. Traction control is an on road feature. Get better drivers if you’re going to do anything like this ever again.
Any 4x4 owner knows that up hill 3km/h is a completely pointless test. Any of these vehicles will perform off road with a decent 4x4 driving experience!
A few of them were going way faster than to poxy 3km/h the first 3 had. Even going 6km/h which some were doing at the least is still 2x faster which alone holds a massive advantage in situations like that! It seems a bit unfair to the first few cars that got the slow treatment and instant fails
It's also pretty convenient that the identical D-Max and BT50 were back to back first up on the unopened shaily track. Bit hard to explain 2 identical cars performing differently by having 1 at the start fighting trail trash and 1 at the end on a run-in track
I noticed you guys are copping a lot of negatively due to 4wd 24/7’s test but I just wanna say your videos as good and informative, more useful for the average buyer. Most of the negativity is coming from people watching for entertainment and aren’t gonna go full beans up Cape York. Hope you guys don’t take it to heart and keep up the good work guys!
Only got to watch this now and agree with the many comments on momentum. Also, no comments on tyre pressure? Surely not factory pressures, for a course that is clearly not paved? Then finally, with the greatest of respect, traction control was never designed with anything but the lack of wheel articulation in mind. Most vehicles will go into "limp mode" or overheat with consistent use of their "traction control". That was not sand, but "traction control" in sand is going to get you well dug in, as most "systems" will deny power, as well as brake the spinning wheels. Not all spinning is undesirable, but that's what the diff locks are for, which brings me back to the driving. It would be uncharitable to say that the tester was "getting the hang of it" as he went along, but sensible momentum, whilst trying not to destroy the vehicle and environment in the process, is always a good thing. Get's you to the cooler (chilley?) box sooner too ....

Isuzu is the worst one there
The test driver is nervous and loosing momentum....it's the opposite from the results of 4WD 24/7...
They post an unfair test and everyone is noticing the lack in equality in the tests. The blokes at 4wd 24/7 actually tour and did a very fair test
The drivers are rubbish
Well Car Advice gives the results based on who pays the most for advertising so it’s no great surprise.

Facts, if your paying that much for a Hilux just for a town car your basically materialistic. Paying for the brand name and badge.
Utes seem to be typically rear drive biased yet are far too light in the rear (unladen).

would like to see them do this on the GWM with it in the correct mode (cross country expert mode).
So did you engage the Expert Cross country mode on the GWM ( hold traction control button for 5 seconds turns it on) Im guessing it wasnt done.
It wasn’t in their interest to do that. The reviews were so obviously biased.
Very biased review...the GWM is best in my book

Im proud to say that my dad is a nissan navara owner 💯
Enjoyed the video, thanks guys. And im not questioning the hilux & navara doing as well as they did.
That said, it definitely felt like there was bias involved whilst testing.
The hang up on Amarok not having low range is clearly a personal opinion not performance based. As it clearly out performed the Ranger & the off road mode comfortably steps in strong instead of low range.
Yeah he clearly states how easily the Amarok makes it, but then goes on to say that no low range is a weak point🤷♂️lol
Should push them all to the same RPM, you can clearly hear that the first three weren't pushed as hard.

AGREED.
Why didn’t the others get a bit of momentum 😆 like the Nissan Navara
@@Glenno7
May I ask you Very nicely to Please explain your comment.

Hi, I'm not from australia but this review is good and I'm very glad it came out
I’m a Hilux owner and love it but let’s be serious here, high 50k prices for this group V high 30s for the GWM. With 5k spent on the GWM for a filter guard, set of tyres, under body skid plates and a re map of the throttle response it would have chewed up and spat out anything else on this test with 15k still in your pocket. Surely some emphasis has to be put on initial outlay for a genuine comparison, surely.
34k for a Musso looks even better.
50k ? Try 80k, what a joke,
Good Day, GWM UTE on a personal note I don't think the guys had an understanding of the vehicle you were actually getting it to do things it never does I am from South Africa and i have pitched my GWM against similar circumstances and i did not get stuck once and i did not have wheelspin once with standard cooper tyres at 1.8 bar. In fact the 4x4 Instructor with me that have done 3 africa 4x4 tours admitted its up their with the best he has driven Toyota, Land Cruiser, Ranger
So if you move the fuel filter.. and installed an I drive throttle controller the gwm becomes a much better off-road Ute.. for $37K plus $800 for the upgrades.. sounds good to me 👌🏻👍🏻
When it’s 20K cheaper than almost every other Ute with better on road safety tech and the one of only two Utes with an airbag between the driver and passenger, it seems like a winner to me.
Also a lift kit and AT tyres would be handy!
Very good second place for the Nissan Navara, here in my country Chile (SouthAmerica) these facelift Navara is selling very good, is second place in sales but with problems of stock, if not I think it would be the number 1 in Chile. We get the Navara from the factory of Nissan Mexico.
Weird how a 37k ute can match the 57k utes. Shows how much we're getting ripped off by the main ute makers.
I am convinced that the GWM is a winner considering the money you paid for it.
The GWM needs a departure angle of 90 degrees at 20 meters followed by a wading depth of 30 meters.
#Navara the underrated underdog…never the best nor the worst…tested through the years and reliable with new tough look design… loving it, 😎
Ranger can fit larger tyres than Hilux.
Mitsubishi Triton the best choice very good for urban and rural areas Dakar rally champion
When it comes to offroad that is where the Hilux excels, I think the Triton is up there too. The only disappointment is the DMax, I was rooting for it to win
He was biased bro
Ridiculous test without having some momentum in play. All need to be retested with some momentum otherwise it was just 34mins of amateur effort.
"I don't want to damage the track" Why go up so slowly then? Momentum is everything! No tyre deflation Number 1 reason tracks get F&^%$#@ up.
I think that hill climb was more a tyre test and about track placement. On top of that you had driver behaviour and pure luck.

Why didn't you get up the dmax as much as some of the others? Seemed to be wheel spin fail..
car advice and other car reviewers always bang on about the Amarok not having Low Range and yet it always seems to pass the tests. Time to give the Amarok gear box, constant 4wd system some more credit. it does better than vehicles with low range. Enough is enough! NO, I don't drive a VW, I drive a Nissan X-trail 2006, which actually has a rear diff. lock and can go on many 4wd tracks with no mods.
When the Hilux is in middle of rut climb you changing camera views to the other side just as it slows down in the rut and then next camera view is on the same side but he is out. Just keep it there so we can see the how it does it to get out of that rut.
You changing views just when it shoudnt be changed.
If the Amarok can do what you ask from it without low-range, why would you judge it badly?
Lawrence Henry: You got it correct and all those that agree with you. I'm beginning to get an unnerving feeling about all these tests.
I have a new BT50 and it’s terrible. Had none stop issues and I have experienced same as in this video. Watching stock cars pass me up sandy track all I was going to do was make giant holes in.
And why are we testing the traction control on an off-road test? I thought we turn it off when the going gets tough?
The hilux is easily best off road but my top 3 is d max/bt50 as they are the same. trtion and hilux
Great Wall doesn’t even have a crash test, why would you include that in a review? People should avoid any car without a crash test, specially one with the Steed background. Would be better to do LDV at least for a budget Chinese ute.

Not a fair test in my opinion as the first 3 vehicles did not receive any momentum as the latter vehicles.....momentum very vital in this test.

A few of them were going way faster than to poxy 3km/h the first 3 had. Even going 6km/h which some were doing at the least is still 2x faster which alone holds a massive advantage in situations like that! It seems a bit unfair to the first few cars that got the slow treatment and instant fails
