Famous rivalries all, but none of them are a pinch on the fierce battle between Australia’s two favourite utes, the 2020 Ford Ranger and 2020 Toyota Hilux.
The 4x4 versions of the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger constantly duke it out for the honours of the top-selling car in the country. So evenly are they matched, that the difference in sales volume over the past 60 months is less than 1000 vehicles, out of almost 340,000 sold.
The thing is though, like all great rivalries, buyers tend to fall into one camp or the other. You are either Team Ranger or Team HiLux, never both.
We’re expecting an update to the Toyota later this year, and to the Ranger early next. Will either update shift the dynamic of the most competitive status-quo on Australian roads, we’ll have to wait and see. But for now, let’s dig a little deeper and find out why these two pick-ups tread such a divisive and popular line.

I like the Ranger, my heart says Ranger, while my brain says Hilux.
Use your brain.
Hahhaha, same here....toyota has integrity for low maintenance cost.
@@johntheaccountant5594 said no man ever
Super same but by brain say ranger heart say hilux
@@johntheaccountant5594 hahahahaha true
I own ranger wiltrack, my brother owns 2017 TRD Hilux.
We both agree Toyota has better build quality and feels more solid. Ranger smoother engine, more features, but feels cheaper.
I find theres always small subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) advantages given to the Ranger in a number of these Ute review comparisons with the Lux. One of the more glaring examples of this in the video is the fact that the Ford dealership in question somehow "sold out" of all their Standard Rangers and only had an upgraded FX4 in stock for the test. Throughout the video its easier on the eyes to see Fords blacked out Trim, leather seats and upgraded cosmetics as opposed to Toyota's non leather/standard fit out. A comparison with a Toyota Rogue would have been more fair but of course it was overlooked. Would you ever see the other way round where Ford would be in the same situation?
Small advantages like this I feel only strengthen the underlying push of these car review sites that have potentially vested interests from Ford.
Call me a skeptic or a Toyota Homer but I do feel as though there is a big push by these review companies with an incentive to push the Ranger from Ford. I cant completely blame them though as Toyota has left the door wide open with their more recent lack of innovation and of course DPF issue.
Whether you are a Toyota or Ford enthusiast I encourage you to cheer for the "other side" as it only means we as consumers win. Iron sharpens iron and continued innovation and competition from both sides only leads to a better product overall for us consumers. I know Toyota feels the heat and will come back even stronger with their next series so I can't wait.
Well said man. While i personally fancy the Ford, we should aim to have impartial reporting and going back to your FX4 thing, if they really wanted to be neutral, they should have talked about the direct Hilux Comparison for the Ford Ranger FX4 (Rogue) instead of ignoring it. And can't agree any more with the "cheer for the other side" thing, really should be pushing every manufacturer to up their game.
yeah youre right you are a toyota fanboy
But they are evenly matched. FX = SR5
WILDTRAK = ROGUE
RAPTOR = RUGGED X
I moved to Thailand and looked at buying a Pick UP Truck for three years before buying three years ago.
Mitsubishi, Mazda BT50, Ford Ranger, Nissan, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu are all manufactured in Thailand for the Australian market.
I decided on the Toyota Hilux:
Quality and build of the Pickup Truck compared to the Ford.
The Toyota diesel engine is less complicated than the Ford bi turbo,
Ford have issues with the auto box.
Toyota reliability is renowned.
The large number of Toyota dealers compared to the Ford.
Toyota customer service.
After three years of ownership of the Toyota Hilux 2.4 diesel, I have had absolutely no issues (no warranty work) and have only changed the oil every 10,000 kms or 6 months from new.
I liked the video just for the excelent formating, Great job editor!
My wife and I have spent the last couple of summers and weekends touring around New Zealand in my XLT.. the Ranger has to be the best purchase we've ever made!👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I brought my Ranger new in 2015 and it’s still like the day I brought it, and it’s never let me down .
A legend well done very explanatory I just love these reviews and you did it so well and very honestly cheers and have a great day
Great review and i think you hit the nail on the head when you said the Ranger is "fun to drive', i have a FX4 BiTurbo 2wd and love it, Fun Fun Fun!!
Good to see the old 2011 based Ranger still takes it in a general setting.
Remember that it was the first pick up ute thingo to do 3.5t towing. The first of the big body, car comfort utes.
Navara V6 was only thing with more power when the PX came out.
Hilux has been behind the ball for ages. Its not bad by any means. But for the price, its behind most of the competition.
With that said, ranger better get that rumored Powestroke 3L V6 soon. And the Everest spec rear end would help.
Nice one James!
Since these vehicles are 4wd perhaps include some testing that is proper 4x4 where 4Low Range is required, not just roads a little harder than the Woolies carpark.
Also driving through a puddle does not constitute handling mud well.
agreed man but from a car sellers perspective, 80% of people buying these are either for work or just for driving around the town in a big car. anybody like i’m assuming you and myself that actually go off road don’t really care what these people say about a stock 4wd off road when my BT50 has probably 1 thing stock left about it hahahah
They have absolutely zero clue how to handle such a real off road situation. They would either damage the vehicle or even get seriously injured or killed.
Almost every owner will spend minimal time off road and far less on challenging tracks so in real terms off road testing is minimal in relation to how people will use these cars. Personally $60,000 to thrash in the bush is only for the quite wealthy, I would buy an old Land cruiser for doing a lot of heavy duty off roading you won't drop a lot of money when you pinstripe it or some minor dents.
@@Sabumnim666 Why bother even buying a 4wd???
Could you do driving on sandy surfaces like beaches, see how their engines and stock tyres handle a good sandy track.
Cool video! Keep up the good work

I was not disappoint..
Wonderful Review
Very informative, thanks!
had my ranger for 6 months now still feeling it, best car i have owned
I love the 3.2 5cyl in that Ford. Just something about a 5cyl that always sound so good. Its also well matched with that 6 speed box. Just idles around using all all torque of the engine where I find the 4 cyl ford and Toyota a bit buzzy
Sounds to me the Ford is missing an extra cylinder

Great review watching a year later!
Would love to see a comparison between the updated Ford 2.0ltr and upcoming releases of the BT50, DMax and Hilux. Loved your review. Think the Hilux/Ranger debate is a little like Apple vs Samsung debate. Both make excellent phones and comes down to eco system. I’ve driven both and my heart loves the Ford. But Toyota’ cheaper price, larger network, more capable off-roader chops and higher resale price sealed the deal for me. Just waiting for the 150kw update and full review of the Hilux in September.
Toyota just has just been upgraded in Thailand, where it is manufactured, and now has 500 Nm of torque and better in car entertainment.
Loved It!
Thanks!

I would suggest you do a 5 years long term review stating:
Total cost of service and repairs.
Length of time they are off the road being fixed.
Then sell them on the open market and calculate the depreciation from the new price.
From all that calculate the total ownership cost.
That is when you realise that the Toyota Hilux is the winner for your pocket.
U can find that info urself. Don't be lazy
Our Ranger is 5 years old.
200k km.
Not a single part replaced. Had a longer service interval than the hilux and has cheaper services in South Africa.
So even if nothing broke on the Hilux it would have been more expensive
The XLS Ranger can be had for under 40 grand and that is a bargain leaving plenty left over for the after market gear and that's what drove me to the Ford.
Think that’s the way I’ll be going
thats why we just got ours
any issuses on the ford? we know ford is meme-worthy regarding reliability issues but correct me if im wrong
@@cammac66 no sir :) i have the 2017 3.2 liter wildtrak and no issues so far. just regular prevention maintenance. 48k km odo

ROFL at the “DPF issue fixed with a manual purge button”. That ain’t gonna help when it’s permanently stuck in a burn! 🤦♂️
All have problems auto trans on the ford go like the dpf on the hilux lol think 20,000 fords have been recalled for the transmission lol
Toyota have had the dpf issue fixed mid 2018 onwards
@@andrewcumming6988 Fixed but requires a manual button? The onus on the driver and not Toyota?
Andrew Cumming it’s not fixed

Hilux with complimentary DPF Problems Oh what a feeling
I would love to see these same pickups for the next 10 years here in youtube.
Ranger has been in the market for 10 how much you want to see buy a fun pickup rather than ugly boring plasticky Junk toyota
Probally the ranger, The toyota could too but it fliped over trying to dodge a moose lol
Noticed in ranger there's a offroad feature in dash settings is this only for 2020 model as cant find it in my 2019 model dash settings?
I really like his presenting style
Keep up your good work
From a non biased perspecive I am glad they both exist to promote ambitious development. From a Hilux perspective I must add that you can choose a Ford's oil colour to match your paving in South-Africa.
Interesting roll bars....that 70's look!
Please include the Amarok in a similar comparison test
Its a shame, I think the 3.2 5 cyl could pump more power with proper tune compared to the 2.0 twins on the market. This is the last time we will see 5 cyl diesel
There is 3.2L XLTs getting around on 35s hitting just over 200kW at the wheels. for how long untill the engine goes who knows but you can get fucking tons of power out of them if you want to spend the money. your comment is unfounded.
@@1989cranston Read his comment again.
Both great trucks. Good fir what they’re made for which one would I take?? My heart says Ranger but would come down to the dealer and what price he made.
Toyota stayed with the same old concept too long while other brand kept moving forward.
New Hilux has just been announced for fall 2020.
That is comedy gold mate. Ridiculous drivel but still funny.
old is gold
Old reliable better than new unreliable specially for a truck.
They need to upgrade hilux rear looks
Actually hilux before was a best choice for pick ups but when ford ranger arrived with the nice butt, everyone stunning. Hahaha
Both are beast 💪💪💪💪
I am team Ford Ranger forever. Next I prefer Isuzu DMax over the Hilux. Hello from Papua New Guinea!
Thanks for watching! We're looking forward to the new D-Max arriving later this year.
D new madza bt50i is a rebadged isuzu, ive been cheking youtube for actual roadtest, none so far though
Add some of the smaller utes to your next test. Such as Ssangyong Musso Xlv ultimate plus. And the LDV t60
They'll give everyone a run for their money
More towing demos plis
I'd love to see the long term $$ spent on maintaining/repairing both vehicles(not just within 5 years of capped price services and general maintenance) and the number of times each one let the owner down. It would always be Toyota for me, but I'm a typical Toyota fan boy. If for no other reason than Ford (and Holden) have rubbish customer service, I've experienced it first hand. Toyota not so much, easy to get parts for quickly and better customer service from my experience. Saying that I always service my old Toyota myself because I'm a tight arse.
Real good comment considering the DPF issue and stuff all support that cost many people a lot of money getting stuck in the middle of Australia and having to foot the bill because Toyota would not cover anything out side of the car repairs, not the cost to get it towed back or the 2 weeks stuck in Alice Springs and the car was in warranty.
All car companies shaft you just the sheep believe the hype and BS of Toyota more. Do yourself a favor and just buy a landcruiser nothing better.
You're a lucky guy, toyota here in costa rica kinda sucks to be honest, we had to wait 2 week for a rav4 cilinder head, and it wasnt that cheap ($400)
Is That windscreen that alters your appearance to a bearded sort extra, ideal for speed cameras and driver identification I would spec that option
Thank you for mentioning Horsepower not only kw.
One day the metric system may even catch on!
@@Drivecomau too bad covid caught up quicker than the metric system
I have never been bothered about the mulit-media in the car as it goes out of date within a year or two.
As long as I can charge the mobile phone up and plug in a USB memory stick with music need nothing else.
XLT has a bi-turbo option also now..Just purchased one.
how about the reliability? which is better?
what rpm's do these cars sit on in top gear at 100kph?
Wondering if you could do an all round review on the 2020 Ford ranger wildtrak 2.0l bi-turbo. Looking at getting one but already have the 3.2l 5 cyl 2016 Mazda bt-50. Towing a family caravan is the main reason I am worried about getting the smaller 2.0l engine over the 3.2l
Me too 👍🏽
Stick to the bigger engine if towing. Torque is more important than power for towing.
The 2.0ltr with twin turbos is putting a lot more stress (hence wear out) on the engine than the 3.2ltr.
80% unpaved - but feels like 100%. Hence why I'm interested in an off-road orientated vehicle.
Then get a 70series and leave the Rangers and Hiluxs for the hairdressers.
@@craigice9635 I would have bought a 70 series, but its not available in Europe, so I ended up with a Hilux
Will buy both omg
As a person who doesn't do ANY serious off-roading, but rather towing trailers, horse-boxes etc (on gravel road yes) I would just love to see how these 2 compare when towing something of about 2 tons to 2.5 tons. Acceleration, overtaking, cruising, fuel consumption, composure etc. Please and thank you.
Biggest concern would be the extra cost to clutch replacement. 2.5 tonnes towed will as you know lessen the clutch life span.
Be interested to see the costing of that along with how much time you lose in the garage.
Is the tub of a Ford Ranger that small? Why is the data different from the brochure?
Always been a Hilux man!!!! As a work car I got a Ford Ranger XLT... gutted I didn’t get the SR5. 6 months later I had to hand it back and got a brand new Hilux SR5!!!! SR5 is awesome but I kept missing the Ranger.... it dawned on me... the Ranger is a better Ute!!
I own a 2016 XLT Ranger which I am more than happy with and have found it to be more than adequate for the purpose .
Because I have had such a good run with it and after watching your report I have I have now traded my 2016 in and purchased a 2021 FX4 red Ranger and would have no hesitation in recommending it as a great vehicle'
< As a minor comment my previous vehicle was a 200 series Landcruiser and the wife reckons the Ranger is a more comfortable car>
Is it the 3.2lt 5cylinder?
TOYOTA any day!!
what do you reckon has a better stock suspension
Good day. Thank you for this clip.
Could you please make a video- witch one is better ranger 3.2 or 2.0 biturbo. Also a drag race between that 2 , the drag race its something that everyone is looking for but not eat available on RUclips.

John Cadogan of autoexpert.com.au has a good discussion re comparison of the two Ford engines for their Ranger variant.
Can you review the 2.0l bi turbo ranger please?
Sure thing - which trim level? XLT or Wildtrack?
XLT Please? Thank you 👍
Awesome review, just brought a lux
I thought you did a good review of these and sounded fair with everything you pointed out. Good review.
I don’t understand your mirror control comment about the ranger, you should not be playing with your mirrors while driving anyway. Better to have the lights control where you can see it and less used stuff out of sight.
I was thinking the same thing. Better to set them before you drive off.
I’ve found the ranger steering wheel also blocks view of the left and right storks if you are unfamiliar with the controls
You guys do great comparison tests...
Im also for the ranger... well rounded and quite up to date😁
I love this video for the off-road I will go for Toyota Hilux because it is solid I have 2017 model
Thanks mate. Toyota really needs every cent it can get from loyals like you. The poor things.....
With your Toyota Hilux, you don't need to even think of replacing it until it is 15 years old.
The Ranger with the 2.0L diesel would be my choice. I'd add the dealer installed Fox Suspension.
The 2.0tt is just far more refined then both of these engines
Yes in stock form, but what about longevity? I'd rather the slower, less stressed 3.2 Any day of the week. With a tune and exhaust you're going to have more power than the 2.0 and still running Lower exhaust gas temps and less boost. If you're into towing regularly it's a no brainer.
2.0 bi-turbo with its transmission problems? No thanks 3.2 all the way
2ltrs 10 speed dying everywhere...no thanks...3.2 all the way
@@Suroyfamilia the transmission problems is a soft ware fix. no big deal. on the other hand 3.2 with holed pistons is a worry.
3.2 anyday :) been around since 2011 and proven to be reliable and stress free engine with regular maintenance. too much data for the 3.2 engine compared to 2.0 4cyl
Can you test the upgrade Hilux
James Ward is back? Good stuff, also about time that Car Advice got rid of all the termites that was in the dead wood.

How about a safety test?
Ranger for comfort, hilux for real heavy lifting. Thats my take
I have owned two hilux and purchased Wildtrack 6 months ago. The Hilux is very slow and sluggish. Ford has more power and better technology.
Very slow and sluggish my ass lmao.
Slow and sluggish ? mate I know now you never ever sat in a hilux
Hilux more of road test please
Why is the Hilux marked "2.8 D-4D" in Australia and marked as "2.8 GD-6" in South Africa.?
I own a Ranger and absolutely love it. The comfort, ride, power is way better than a Hilux. I drive a 2019 2.8ltr Hilux at work and do 1000s of off road and road kms and find it gutless compared to.my Ranger. I am 6ft3 and the Hilux is horrible for comfort compared to the Ranger. The tech on the Ranger leaves the Hilux for dead. The 3.2 Motor rocks
I want a HSV Maloo.
And a mullet?
No reach on the steering wheel mate, i’ve got Covid 19.
Buy both one for city tarmac the other for off-roading
The ford makes more sense the vast majority of ute owners go off road rarely and even then a 2 wheel drive would probably suffice, so for most of the time the ford is the better option "no Chiropractor needed" also you get more for your money, and in the looks category the ranger looks like a handsome unit, the hi lux more like a chinese try hard.
So to summarize, if 80% of your time or more will be off road, you'd be mad not to buy the hilux, and if 80% of your time or more will be on road, you would be mad not to buy the Ranger. To that I would also add, that if you are buying as a touring vehicle to tow a van or large boat, you would be mad not to pick the Ranger (more comfortable ride, better tech and cabin, better towing). And some say yeah but the Hilux is unbreakable, and I would say yeah but Ford is built tough and the Cybertruck is bullet proof - Better to look past the silly marketing and focus on the actual vehicles ;-)
Toyota then.
So I have been on seven different mine sites in the last year and there is only one ute on all of them.
Let me guess the mighty Hilux
Take them out of the overall sales and the ranger is killing them.
