Can the ultimate automotive battle in Australia be solved with physics?
If you have read our comparison between Australia’s two favourite cars, you’ll know that the battle for the top sales position is being fought on many fronts, with each vehicle giving or taking ground depending on buyer criteria.
One leads in tech, the other in ergonomics. One has more load space, the other has more cabin space. One is better on-road, the other better off it. Key points for many buyers, but the importance and weighting essentially depends on your specific needs.
So is there a better way to solve this neck and neck battle? And if there isn’t a better way, is there say, a more fun way?
To find out, we’ve thrown process out the window and resorted to basic shenanigans by strapping the 2020 Toyota Hilux to a 2020 Ford Ranger in a four-by-four tug-of-war!

See how these Utes go in our 2021 4x4 Dual Cab Ute Off-Road Mega Test: ruclips.net/video/wxy4jBnKMX4/видео.html
For a fair testing just load the bed equally to give the rear wheels traction
I agree with one of the comments. Would be interesting if you put a load into each car. Roughly half of the payload.
Do the test in low range 2 or 4wd or both but have the rope slack and both vehicles idling along and then see who stalls or looses traction first.
All terrain tyres, or go on a paved surface.
We used the showroom standard tyres, but agree we'll try for a higher level of friction next time!
Thanks for letting us know all this, i like them all
For what its worth we did this at our work about 6 months ago on concrete. The Ranger 3.2l cleaned up with ease. Both vehicles automatics.
Yeah you'd expect the bigger, heavier and more powerful Ranger to easily run off with the Hilux. I think if they did it on more a more grippy surface it would be more fair.
It would if it was heavier, thats just basic physics. I've done many 4WD trips and I can tell you the Toyota performs better on hard tracks.
I saw a video where they both got a 800kg load put in the back and drag raced. Both hit the line on a dead heat, same speed and 9.1sec to 60km. Efficiency vs brute
2012 - 2017 Hilux vs 2021 Mazda BT-50
(The huge model year difference would be interesting to see how they compare)
Please do these tests on pavements and same tyres if possible. I bet a lot of viewers would love a series of these comparing different utes. But like others have stated this doesn't really test much.
Both utes are good, but I recon HILUX is all-rounded and more flexible.
This video was great publicity for the rope manufacturer
Can you please do the test on bitumen so wheel spin and tire style is ruled out
Ranger 👍 my future mini truck.
It’s shit
When he said "but I know you ain't gonna be happy about that" it kicked the shit😂 outta me
To be a fairer test traction wise both vehicles should have the exact same rubber on them.
Still not using a blanket or coat on the rope. Wouldn't trust you to review my brand new car!
I want to know the difference between these ford rangers: Wildtrak & Thunder. Which one is superior
Next round, telsa cybertruck, vs Ford Ranger, or Toyota Hilux who will win?
Great vidoe
This is a traction test. a more powerful engine doesn’t mean more traction. Let the tyres down on one and see what happens. extra weight would help also, as stated.
2.8 V 3.2 Tug of war. I would have thought the 3.2 had, more towing power then that. Anyhow still both great trucks !
I’m pretty sure that was the bi turbo 2.0 ranger
Try the same test on bitumin??
Should have used the 2.0l Ranger. Also the 3.2 vs 2.0 ranger tug of war would be good.
Great idea! 3.2 vs 2.0 would be interesting!
@@Drivecomau I think the 3.2L will smoke as dark as 1976 ship as 2.0L has a lot of torque,Wildtrak 2.0L owner here.
Please make Everest vs new fortuner vlog
I understand toyota resell value is the best. In my experience on buying ute, you will pay -+ $10k more for the toyota hilux compared to bt50 (sr5 vs xtr 4x4). And most likely you will get -+ $10k more when selling the hilux. But I rather pocket the money early on and swap with new ones when 5 years lease ended.
Hahaha
Buy a Great Wall ute then you banana!!
Imagine buying a Ute with the intention it was only to last 5 years!!
#IKNOWWHATYASAID
Which ranger motor was used?
Place a tug with the Ranger and Amarok
Hilux and Amarok
Physics is physics.
Assuming both have equal tyre brand, size, wear and pressure, any difference in tyre traction would primarily be achieved by the different weights pushing down on the tyres. That said the hilux was more impressive in this test.
To make it a fair contest of power to wheels you would have to have them having equal tyres, weighing the exact same amount and on a grippier surface.
A controlled 'equal weight' test is the only one you could take seriously.
A subaru forester could beat them both of these utes if you loaded it up with cement bags, mind you it would probably break.
You should try the 1989 Hilux ( the indestructible truck ) trust me it will surprise you
May u do fortuner vs everest ?
Try again after 20 years or 500000km... Toyota will win, hands down.💪🤣👍
Most people will offload vehicle after 100,000 Klm. Both are good cars buy the one that you get the best deal on. Also when are Ford and Toyota coming out with V6 powerplants ?
its true bro... Toyota like Badak Java 🤣🤣
But the Toyota didn’t win🤡
@@joe_allen7742 lol as u know japanese car fans are fanatic
That is no lie that hilux will tow that ford to the scrapyard
Why was there smoke coming from the grass?
I can't believe that this cars are most unpredictable
Why did you do it on grass? And not bitumen
please do the nissan navara vs the hilux
Do tug of war again with same weight
What would be interesting is to know which Hilux and which Ranger was used. If its the 3.2 Ranger against a 2.4 Hilux, bad for Ford, but if its the 2.0 Ranger against the 2.8 Hilux, bad for Toyota.
Toyota fans
we are waiting for the P series video
Lets have the Hilux Rocco 👺against the ranger raptor 😈
Both fully loaded
You need to put 700 kg payload on each of them, this will improve traction and get better results.
ranger raptor vs regular ranger. same engine, same gearbox. let's see if the fuss (and extra money) is really worth it.
Ford F150 Raptor vs Proton Jumbuck
Which car much long engine life please?
The one with the grippiest tyre would win.
Like to see ford ranger 3.2 vs 2.0 litre
Great idea!
Yes. Definitely keen to see that! Actually I don't care who wins, the 5 cyl sounds so much better and love how it idles around vs the "buzzie" 2l 4cyl. Would always buy the 5 cyl over the 2l
me 2
true
@@imopn you obviously haven't driven both the 2.0 and the 3.2. I have both and would never go back the 3.2 ever again. The 2.0 is a clear winner
I like ford ranger!!!👍👍👍
Wouldn't have either
Add 200kg to the hiluix
Strada vs hilux next
Both has a power...
I like toyota hilux
do a tug of war betwean everest and the land cruiser l200 it would be good please
Totally dumb
Cruiser weighs more than the mountain
eu, sinceramente, acho esse tipo de prova, um autentico disparate. E olha que eu tenho uma Toyota Hilux Cargo 2014. ZD 19514 aqui em Tromso
Not a fanboy but Toyota prioritizes on durability hence their engines are almost like detuned. Engine output are below what the engine can do
Hulix
I want both cars go up the hill or mountain
Load a 1 tonner load during a tug war
Greetings how about you show us 2021 with the new Nissan and Isuzu included, again on wet ground and tar please
I'd like to know which is the best this year so we'd buy the best
Smaller engine , lighter Toyota - Ford should have put this one in the bag..but of course the Japanese levered it off and in my book a win
Put em on the concrete
Sounds like a high-friction surface is the next place to try!
I guess they cant afford to buy new set of tyres after that.
and 4h?
Should had done it on a paved surface and a bit of weight in the back to help with traction
Nothing compares to Hilux, this truck is battle proven
Not fair to the Hilux having to compete with a 3.2 liter engine armed with a 2.8 one
I think there was an option for the 3.0L Hilux but available in another country
My dad has a 2009 hilux 3.0L turbo diesel. If I'm correct, the new hilux comes only with a 2.8L now...
You're a funny guy doing car advice i like it
I love the Toyota
there is just a bloody concrete road aside
Just watched another video Hilux beat Ford Raptor on off road, perhaps ranger it's more delicate in the internal and more comfy. If for work or camp or any others wildlife journey I'll definitely will go with the Toyota Hilux. By the way, why Toyota Tacoma and Ford f150 still not available in Australia?
Wanna trade? I'll take the cheaper hilux over the 30-40k Tacoma.
Why would they bring out a competitor to one of their own vehicles ?
Use the Ranger 3.2 6speed Auto..
Do it on a concrete road and we'll have a real winner.
Mitsubishi Pajero sport vs Toyota fortuner ?
To it on the bitumen that's the only way
Same car
Same place
After 15yrs
Lol. Buy a 15 yr old Toyota then
Mine 31yrs same Hilux same place!!
Orr and my other Hilux 17yrs same place
I'd say the hilux and the navara are the most popular but ok. I think it's because non Tradesman get the ranger while Tradesman get the hilux.
Fortuner 2.8 vs pajero sport 2.4
Fortuner 4.0L Petrol vs Pajero 4.0L Petrol
Only HILUX
They look like the same truck
"What have we learned? Absolutely nothing"
Sure. Bec Ford won
The hilux will always hold its value better than the ranger and spend less time in the garage.
100%
Good point. You would want it to hold its value when you sell it and get a ranger.
@@allizdog5927 then to have a ranger that has countless amounts of problems, more so then a hilux?.. doesn't sound like the best choice..
@@allizdog5927 😄✊
Hilux vs benz
Try the road
Good ...ranger
ชอบดูแบบนี้ให้มีแนนคิด
V6 X CLASS VS AMAROK
To me HİLUX 👊👊👊👊👊👊
इ लोवित तो
Do it on Tarmac.
I’d go for a HSV Maloo.
Good luck with finding one of those these days 🤣 if only they were cheap and easy to find
Do they still make those?
NO!
And the transmission is broken
Do it again in 15 years and there will be a winner fo sure!
lmaooo that's a lot of time for you to catch up with the ranger 😂🤣😂
@@Kyxmyx The ranger will be on its third transmission
put them on concrete road, and let us see , ok!
Cyber truck:lat the kids play
Put the everest against the fortuner
Try the Raptor!!? 😂
No Chinese tug there lads? Must’ve gassed out in the Cranbourne high street.Tell me does the 79 series burn grass out the bush? 80k is a lot of coin for DELWP to be onto us for starting fires
D-max vs ranger 🙏😁
Pointless
Kinda like your comment
Triton vs ranger please
Good idea - which Ranger, the same 3.2 or the 2.0?
@@Drivecomau uhh, vs the 3.2 would be a good battle
TOYOTA IS THE SUCCESSFUL CAR IN THE WORLD .. .IN TERMS OF MENTAINANCE.. MOBILITY AND FRIENDLY USED... TO THE USER...
Make them put loads in both, now both are empty not good just spinning the tyres, no conclusions at this situation.
