I also came back to KI2 decades later. Also preferred KI1. But man it really clicked in my head this time. I was able to get over the differences, that was the sticking point. Like it better than KI1 now.

Thanks! Maybe I should review my other games soon haha. They’d all be fairly positive considering I bought the games I love. I really might consider this.
I remember I saw a combo for Sabrewulf in a magazine that I never was able to pull off, I still kind of remember it to this day but I never knew what it was like to execute it, I spent so many quarters trying to do it correctly, in my opinion KI2 was super flashy, the images, the sounds, at times it was the loudest arcade machine in the whole room, I have very fond memories going to the mall and spending hours in front of this cabinet. that's awesome you have the actual arcade cabinets !
I think I might do more videos like that soon. I've noticed a change in what I make lately simply because of a change in environment and interests. I wish I could say I had a road map or plan but I don't haha.
For me KI just showed up one day at the local arcade and was the loudest thing in the there and us kids were like moths to a flame for it, so it holds a special place in my heart over KI2 but love them both.
haha I just commented this without reading any other comments beforehand, and yes it seems you too think it was the loudest machine in the room at times, that's because I remember it being the case when I walked into the my favorite arcade room in the 90s as well!
I've always liked KI2 better than the original Killer Instinct with respect to gameplay. However, the impact that the first KI had when it hit the arcades is undeniable.
You left out where every character has a mini ultra only at the end of the first life bar and also explain 4 combo enders and secret 5th one only when the other 4 is done then it affects the amount of hits the ultra combo does
my only problem with 2 is that they changed Orchid's controls. in 1 she was the charge back-to-forward type for most moves like sabrewulf, combo and fulgore but in 2 she was a semi circle back like jago.
I half heartedly played KI2 in the arcades when released, to be honest the arcades at that time were dying and not as fun to hang out in. As crazy as this sounds I enjoyed the N64 version of KI2. In my late 20's I was more about saving money and not blowing cash in the arcades when I could just buy the game for 60 bucks and master it at home or with friends. Every Saturday we all would get together at my friend Jeff's house and play PS1, N64, Dreamcast, PC LAN StarCraft to which I allied off and ruthlessly murdered my teammates and then announced my retirement maintaining my number 1 status to infinity. We also did D&D too but I sucked royally at it. We all started as friends at the arcade but ended up more at home till most of us moved out of state to pursue careers and other lives.
I definitely played way more KI Gold than KI2. It was nice to not waste quarters on the arcade when I wasn’t that interested at the time. Those were good times though. Getting together to play games is way better than online gaming.
@KillerArcadeGames My buddy Jeff bought the arcade cabinet Gain Ground from Aladdins. Ours would sell games every so often. I think he paid 750, but this was back in the mid 90's when 750 bucks was worth more than what it does now, hell thats my monthly grocery bill, but that's another story. If you don't remember that cab, look it up, a massive hulking 3-player game. He had it in his bedroom, and it took up 1/3 of the space alone. He taught me how to beat the game on 1 quarter. These days, it takes me a few continues, but I still hold my own. Playing in person with friends was the greatest. You get the personality, facial expressions, and experience you can never have through a headset.
KI2 wasn’t a bad game, however my pet peeves with the game was doing the 5 enders, how they did the super bar, and using parry to land a 60+ hit combo.
4:28 Chris i have to disagree with you on this, personally i dont really have that much of an issue performing the higher combos. I think the execution is tighter and alittle more precise then KI1 especially when adding Manual hits which adds to the fun imo practicing and being able to pull off the 70+ hit ultra's its a good feeling , also being able to do the slow enders and slow ultra's takes skill. Or another reason is that it could be the inferior Suzo Happ sticks with the black PVC parts you are using and maybe dropping alot of combos because of this. ive recorded a quick video doing the 70+ ultra's vs the cpu to show you /watch?v=bUCW5Zck-jU
@@lajeandom on N64 pad i agree, back then in the 90s it didnt seem that bad cause thats all i had to use and was used to it. But now playing on alot of high quality arcade Joysticks and trying to take N64 pad serious for KI again like the 90s feels so much more difficult and just wrong
If KI2 had come out with KI1 not existing I think it would get much more love. It’s not bad at all just not what many expected from a KI sequel I think.
I think Orchid looks a lot like Janet, I heard she was the inspiration for this version of Orchid which would make sense because Janet was everywhere in the 90s.
And lets just pretend all of us in the arcade at the time werent having fun. The internet has ruined everything. Complaints and criticisms. My buddy and I would go and just run the machine on .50 for as long as we had a challenger. Same with the original. SF2. Tekken. Soul Calibur. MK. Glad I lived through the original releases.
I'm not a fan of KI but I see how people actually are fans. I see why they love it. But yeah, music in this game are good, all tho I prefer music from reboot from 2013. Because, the composer Mick Gordon went above and beyond on writing the soundtrack for that game. Sure, he was not only one person who made the soundtrack for it, but he did an amazing job too. Especially for Jago main theme, where he learned the throat singing specifically for that track. As for everything else, it's the same situation for me like with Street Fighter, where I know how to play but I can't do combos because I have no idea how they work. Maybe because I got used to Mortal Kombat's pre-made combos, where you have to learn them once and don't mind them later. And you don't have to even time them right. You just learn them and that's it. Suck that you can't actually do the same for KI or Street Fighter. But then comes Tekken with button mash and... well, you don't even have to learn anything lol
I played the new KI when it released. It was decent but never hooked me. I bet I’d have given it more time if I had a fight stick. I hate playing on a controller. I haven’t seen MK1 yet, gotta check it out soon.
Thats true. Theres some who prefer KI2 and I'm sure theres a whole new group who barely know the original arcade games exist since they play the Xbox game.
I wasn't a big fan of KI2 when it came out because the characters were too close to the screen versus the original, where you had a broader scope of the background environment. TJ Combo was my eventual go to guy for the first game, then it switched to Tusk for the second.
Thats an interesting critique, I actually kind of like the huge characters but I see what you mean for sure. I'm slowly getting more and more into this game. I keep finding myself gravitating to it. It's something I really never thought would happen.
There are a number of characters I've mastered in KI1 (Cinder, Orchid, Chief Thunder, TJ Combo), so when I get my GRS cabinet setup in a day or two, I look forward to going straight to KI @@KillerArcadeGames
If you do Combo's intinite ultra untill you get 80 hits, then the last time instead of doing an ultra, throw the opponent and do an air combo. You'll get 81 hits!
I’m thinking I might do more reviews of the games I have. Primarily so I can essentially write a love letter about my favorite arcades haha. It would be interesting to compile my thoughts and some interesting info about the games for people who may not know it.
I never was lucky enough to see one in the arcade, I would think they would of made a lot of improvements in killer instinct 2 making it better. Between both do they play the same? Or is the controls different. I did own a primal rage and didn't like the game play at all. Hope Killer instinct is better!
It plays similarly to KI1, they simplified the combo system a little. There's a slightly different feel that makes the game not as exciting to a huge fan of the original. Primal Rage was never my favorite either. It's more of a button masher. Killer Instinct 1 is tough to learn but incredibly satisfying when you do get the hang of it and can perform combos. The arcade experience is unmatched too. I've played about every form of emulation and I'd always choose the original arcade.
@@KillerArcadeGames I've always been interested in both 1 and 2 original cabs but not playing it trying to get feedback from people I didn't want anything that played like Primo Rage and chances of me getting one in person is slim so finding one in another state and having it shipped will be more likely. Hard to learn combos is fine as owning it you have plenty of time learning it. Art work is also excellent on it! Nice machines!
I might have to do a review of it for real. It would end up being 10/10 for me but getting to make a video obsessing over it would be fun. It might also be fun to try and find something I don't like about it haha.
