KI was the "thing" back then and there was no other game like it. I fondly remember back in the day 30-40 people would stand behind watching me beat Killer Instinct at Time Out in the Georgia Square Mall. These were some of the best times of my life playing at the arcade inside the mall. Will never forget them awesome days!👍

KI is probably my third favorite fighting game of all time behind SF2 Turbo and MK II. But I never got a chance to play the arcade game itself. It was always crowded and I would just go and play something else. It was the SNES port that my friends and I would play on a regular basis

Wow, i had totally forgotten about Aladdin's Castle! I used to work for Namco during this time. Yes those KI arcade systems DID have a small harddrives inside of them. We used to put security screws in the back of these cabinets, to keep them from being opened, although that didnt always help. Great video, good memories!

What a coincidence as the other day I was thinking of the KI's soundtrack (out of nowhere) and start listening to it doing chores around the house. Spinal's theme is so good and so is Cinder's! My main character was Glacius and I thought I was pretty good at the arcade destroying other players with him. However I'll never forget playing against some random guy and he picked Eyedol and I got completely DESTROYED!.!!!
Hahaha, fun times and it so sad kids/teenagers these days will never experience what we all did.

@@ghkillah1995 Doing massive 100+ hit combos wasn't a one character glitch. I personally button mashed myself into one with Saberwulf that I will never forget. @@billymerritt420 I believe it!! I am speaking from experience that Cinder was the first character that was found out here locally in my old ancient arcade that's long gone. I remember seeing the combo lists of many that seemed to be impossible. Funny enough, in MKII I watched a middle aged guy at the time use Shang Tsung to morph into Sub Zero, deep freeze the opponent, perform a Babality and at the time he morphed back into Shang, it glitched the screen lock to where he could still move, to which he uppercutted the baby into a pile of fleshy blood and bones. So cool to watch!

Killer instinct had the most amazing sounds as you walked into the arcade. Just hearing those combo sounds & combo breakers were so epic! Excellent voices that sounded deep & powerful. It blew my mind. The TMNT arcade game had the same impact on me.

  • @midiman369
    @midiman369 2 года назад +6

Love KI. Each one is great in its own way. But nothing came close to the impact of the original Arcade version. It just stood out totally compared to any game in an arcade at the time. Fun fact about original KI Arcade version, the volume adjustment in the system for operators to set was "secretly" the lower volume of the game, each level of announcement like bigger combo callouts was subsequent louder than the lower level. The reason you would hear "Ultraaaa!" and "combo breaker" from Across the arcade can be attributed partially because of this as those were the loudest sounds the game would make to attract attention.

I was one day at the market and the guy from whom I was getting my games usually, told me to try a SNES cart which had Mahjong on its sticker and said that the person who gave this to him said it wasn't Mahjong inside, but a fighting game.
Naturally, it made me even more curious so I bought it and went home. Keep in mind that the cart was very much original and there were absolutely no signs of it being open and having its pcb replaced, so to this day I'm not sure if that wasn't somehow a mistake in the factory processes.
I arrived at home and plugged the cart into my SNES and powered it. What came after this, simply blew me away. When the intro and especially the music started to play, I instantly got goosebumps. I think I listened to that main theme song for at least 100 times if not even more.
So yeah, Killer Instinct on SNES was freakin' awesome. I own an SD2SNES Pro for my Super NT, but I also bought the original SNES Killer Instinct cart because I loved this game so much back in the day.

Going into the arcade and hearing it for the first time was a lasting memory. I was 12 years old and heard people screaming and the arcade volume on the machine set to MAX. Someone did fulgores machine gun ending and it was so loud. The graphics at the time.. just super impressive and still look good to me today. They hold a special quality. For me KI is something I've always wanted to own a real arcade for, just obviously not practical. Only game to hold a close arcade nostalgia level would have been MK2. Special time for me as an arcade video game player.

Killer Instinct definitely made an impression on me. I sunk so many quarters into that game that I started to play in bigger arcades to see how long I could last. I did pretty well with my favorite character Spinal. Of course I bought the SNES version with the bonus Killer Cuts. Still have both to this day. Love it. Also recently picked up the Killer Instinct Vinyl soundtrack...didn't know it existed. What a treat. Hope MS/Rare brings a new one out, although the recent release was fantastic that lived on for far longer than I thought it could have. Love them all.

First saw this game in college. This game was available on campus and one of the guys playing it had a partial list of some of the combos from a video games newsgroup. He was playing Fulgore and was doing those 8 hit combos consistently. Everyone who watched was amazed. I didn't really play it much and was hoping for the "Ultra 64" release. Ended up with the SNES one with the Killer Cuts CD. Loved the music, but can't really do the combos. Still can't pull off the combos that well!

To me, at the time this was released, it filled the hole that was me getting over playing Mortal Kombat. I was still obsessed with Street Fighter and had just had my first experience playing King of Fighters, which blew my mind. Mortal Kombat was great and everything but it didn't hold my attention the same. The KI cabinets were always SO loud in the arcade you couldn't help but get drawn into it. Still holds up today too in my opinion. Also here for the thumb-butt.

KI was my alternative go-to if I got tired of SF2 or MK. Just the booming announcer and music really attracted me to the game, and I played it to death on SNES, along w/the Killer Kuts CD...loved the music on it! Having the OG games and the rebooted KI is what prompted me to get the Xbox One, and even though that console had its problems, my KI memories started coming back! But eventually, I transferred it to the Series X and never looked back on the One LoL!

SF2 was the first arcade that charge us .$.50 over in my area. Which force me to the Neo Geo arcade because it was only $.25. Funny enough the first time I saw a KI machine was at the local mall as well. They made sure to make it the loudest. When that bad boy drop on the snes. We as in my brother and I, pick it up at the K&B toy store in that same mall. I remember the Killer Cut CD as well and how cool a black snes cart was. I think the only other cart I had that was color was Spider Man Maximum Carnage which was red. Fulgore became my main instantly before I eventually learn everyone else. Fun times. I don't get excited about games release like that anymore. It was a magical time back than. Gone are the day where I put hours upon hours into learning the craft of a fighting game.
Oh yeah I was just as excited for KI2 arcade as well. I am one of the few that like KI2. Fighting games in my area in general always draw a crowd. This was no different. I than remember waiting in anticipation for KI2 gold on the N64. Which I never own. I ended up renting it and never owning it myself. It was an ok port and I never ended up putting much effort into it. I remember trying to learn Tusk in the game because I am a big fan of the Conan movie. Yeah it wasn't the same. Felt like everything was harder to do. Drop it real fast.
I've since bought it on the Xbox one. Both KI 1 and 2 came with the newest version of KI that recently came out. The new one just got to complicated for my old brain, but I still boot up the old KI on the Xbox every now and than.

The price point is rumored at $999. I'm definitely picking it up.

@Carlos Morales KI at best was a little distraction from MK and SF for a little while but not enough to really compete with either. Ki was big for like a year then died down. Even KI3 while it's a great game at first it just died.. MK X and SF 4 pretty much took the wind out of KI3.
Ki isn't bad but its simply not on the same level as MK. Marvel games were good in the later 90s though so was UMK3 and alpha series which were controversial some hated that series but also had a big fanbase too. Mvc slowed down but had hype for MVC3 which sadly died out fast compared to the success of MVC2.

Definitely made me less interested in MK, but didn't take SFs place.

@Billy Merritt The main reason why KI didn't do it for me much was because its a button masher compared to MK and SF which require far more skill, combo timing, harder inputs for certain moves etc. I did enjoy the roof top finisher though falling on a car wasn't nearly as cool as falling off the pit onto spikes. 😁

@@MKF30 Completely understandable. I think part of what drew me in was that I didn't have to take it as seriously as SF or KoF and but still satisfying the want to play a fighting game.

Killer Instinct started the combo system for fighting games, didn't it?

KI based the fighting around combos, no one else did it until after them, and games like MK3 and Tekken started to copy it.

I would argue that the simple stories of those old fighting games were much more entertaining than the needlessly convulted stories of today's games.

I'm an 80's arcade kid so KI is about a decade after my time, and it's nice to learn a bit about this title and see what all the fuss was about. Thanks!

I have really gone off games that require memorization of button presses, like this, Tekken, Tony Hawk's, etc. I can barely remember what I did yesterday, nevermind complex combos.

2 is real good but I can't understand why anyone thought it was a good idea to remove the announcer announcing every combo. "Brutal Combo!" Are you kidding me?! The first game is so sick.

You got those quarters from the assholes like me that threw away your $2 drink if didn't believe us when we said we'll throw it away if you set it down outside our gate. 🤣
Had KI1 and 2 in the arcade I worked between 96-00. I think we traded out KI1 tho sometime after KI2.
A friend had KI for the SNES and was great for what it was on. Owned KI Gold for the N64, having a 6 face button controller was good, much better than using the shoulder buttons for those he's that needed 6.
