    The SNES version may be a far cry from the arcade original, but it's definitely pushing the console to its limits. The fact that they even did get a fully playable port onto the SNES is amazing within itself, and the same can be said about the Game Boy version.

      You bet I did, was the other one that had me hyped up only to learn that for the home port they made the AI kamikaze into you. My brother and I would co-op it, one would be a "blocker" to take the oncoming driver hits so the other could win the race and we could move on to Washington DC.
      I had such high hopes for the N64 as I am sure a lot of people did. I was floored when I imported my Japanese N64 on launch 3 months before it released in the US only to watch it slowly wither in the coming months/years.

    In spite of the "Ultra 64" not coming out, the SNES port was very damn impressive even with the limitations of the 16-bit hardware. Between that and Donkey Kong Country, the SNES was able to hold out till the N64 was good & ready...

    Back in the day, this game was soooo impressiv for me. I played the heck out of MK and MK2 and this arcade had also a Virtua Fighter 2 cabinet, which was impressiv as well but KI nailed it for a 13 year old boy. The style, the music (OMG the music) those bizarre fighters! Propably the best fighting game made by guys who had no idea how to make a fighting game.
    Next BotP: War Gods (LOL) :D

      Killer Instinct was a game that really showed the flaws that Mortal Kombat had. Killer had tight game play, good AI and awesome appeal without resorting to shock value.

    In the SNES port, the background uses typical raster effects for the pseudo-3d scrolling and not mode 7 (not that there is anything wrong with that). As far as I know mode 7 is quite limiting with regard to what else you can have onscreen at the same time. Raster effects, typical for all 16bit machines are in no way an inferior solution when done correctly and creatively.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 лет назад +1

      I was referring to the death scenes which do use mode 7 as the character falls to the ground.

      Well, Xbox One version IS superior in everything to the arcade and actually is the "definitive" edition of the game.

    • @IncaWarrior3000
      @IncaWarrior3000 6 лет назад +2

      Ernesto David Pintiado Suárez - I agree the xbox one version "definitive edition" is superior, just because is the most newer version of the game. But when I meant "nothing as the arcade version"... I went in comparison to the ports from the arcade casting aside the xbox one "definitive edition" which is "not a port" and has nothing to do with the arcade at all. Now if you are refering to the Killer instinct Classic edition (which is the actual port) is just graphical improvement, adding cinematic and online multiplayer which in fact is great for people who wants a challenge. Just remember this, the games is what makes the consoles popular. If there are not games, the consoles(systems) won't have a reason to be buy. Xbox, playstation, nintendo... it doesn't matter to me what console is... as long as the games that comes from the consoles(systems) are good in quality and quantity (both gamaplay wise) and are fun to play.

    Makes me think of Blast Corps and Goldeneye 007 more than Midway's Mortal Kombat, just for the design style and Graeme Norgate's BGM. Although Grant Kirkhope was also involved in the Goldeneye 007 BGM.
    Rareware was one of the developers requested by LJN to develop some of their games. Others LJN requested were Atlus, WestOne (former Tecmo employees), and Software Creations.

    The Game Boy version of "Killer Instinct" was the version that I grew up playing when I was a kid, and I think it's kind of ironic that Riptor and Cinder would also be absent in "Killer Instinct Gold" after getting a copy of the game for my Nintendo 64.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 лет назад

      I guess rare thought they were not very popular. Cinder to me is very much like Glacious (SP?) so maybe that's why he was removed.

    One thing I've always wondered about the arcade version is whethet or not the music is sample based or streamed audio, as the Killer Instinct title shout appears to cancel out the guitar solo in the introduction theme when it's played in the XBone version. Well, it's either that, or the solo is just shortened to save space on the arcade version's hard drive.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 лет назад +1

      It's probably streamed since the quality is very low. Funny enough the Xbox version seems to use high quality audio than the Arcade.

    The reboot of the series in 2013 on Xbox One is still a fantastic fighting game five years later. At PAX East a couple weeks ago, I practically begged the Xbox rep there to either give us a Season 4 of KI 2013, or give us a sequel, such is my love for KI 2013.
    Because of what I learned in the remake regarding the combo structure (something no GameFAQs guide adequately explained), most of it translated to the old games too, so I was pulling combos with Sabrewulf no problem.

  • @krazycharlie
    @krazycharlie 6 лет назад +1

    Yes! Good ole days when the only nickel and diming crap was just inserting more coins on your favorite arcade so you can keep playing. As most others have claimed, the arcade is the King of the Hill but the home ports are no less fun. Even with all their limitations and missing content, you can get to play as Eyedol! How cool is that? Great video as always Mark. Can't wait to watch your BotP about KI2 and Gold.

    I had no idea that this was originally an arcade game. I remember being well pleased with myself that one time I managed to get a 13 hit combo with Orchid on the SNES version. On the SNES I found this to be the only fighting game worth playing outside of the Street Fighter games.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  Год назад

      You should be proud with that. Only masters could do the Ultra Combo. I managed to do an Ultra Combo just once with Thunder and even then I'm sure it was just pure luck! 😅

    First of all great video my friend as your new videos were sourly missed, secondly I think it's the first time in my life I have to admit that a console port has out done the arcade version, the Xbox one port simply looks a tad sharper and I feel from your footage that it has more color saturation and a deeper more preferred contrast, keep up the awesome work my friend.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 лет назад +2

      The Xbox port does indeed seem cleaner than the Arcade. It also has higher quality audio. Seems the developers had access to the original uncompressed assets that where used when making the arcade game.

  • @mrmadmight266

    The reason why in the beginning the narrator says"Only on Nintendo! Ultra 64!"is because this game was meant to be released as a N64 launch tittle, but since Nintendo delayed the N64 for 1996 they decided to compensate by making a SNES port. anyways nice video sir.

  • @NightSprinter
    @NightSprinter 6 лет назад +1

    Oh, Mark, something to note for this and KI2 is that EVERYTHING related to Nintendo was removed for the XBox One version. Also, Win10 users got shafted on the arcade games being console-exclusives.

    • @yethboth7873
      @yethboth7873 6 лет назад +2

      It would have been interesting. I believe the reason why it was cancelled was due to the Super Nintendo coming to the end of it's commercial life as well as the Nintendo 64 being released at the same time. Therefore Rare probably felt the sequel would not sell well on the Super Nintendo due to the public turning their attention to the Nintendo 64 in which Rare then decided to release Killer Instinct Gold on the Nintendo 64 instead which is basically Killer Instinct 2 with extras.

    I want to offer a bit of context surrounding the SNES port if I may. While playing KI in the arcades in 1994 an 1995 we were expecting the game to only be released on the mysterious Ultra 64 as advertised in the intro of the game at the time. So when they seemingly out of no where pushed the idea of an SNES and Gameboy port within a month or two of it's 1995 summer release a lot of us were skeptical on how well the game would perform. After renting it from Blockbuster one weekend I was pleasantly surprised at how much of the fast pace action, special moves, combos, and overall feel of the game fit exactly with the arcade version. The gameboy port was pretty much what you would expect. But later on when I found out that the Ultra 64 was coming out as the Nintendo 64 with a Killer Instinct 2 port called Killer Instinct Gold without a KI1 port as promised I was pissed. Then sadly when I did get to play Killer Instinct Gold it just wasn't a good port. To me it was actually a lazier handling of KI2 than the KI1 port on SNES was. That's when I knew the franchise was going to die....which it did.
    I remained a broken man for another almost another 20 years until we got the amazing Killer Instinct reboot in 2013 lol! :)

      Ah, I'm not going to go in to reasons but basically Killer Instinct is a very good game with reasonable AI unlike Mortal Kombat :) back in the late 90s I was really good at this game, able to do Ultra Combos with ease when using Thunder, Glacious or Orchard. Ah Killer Instinct, such many memories from this game and the game that "Killed" my joy for Mortal Kombat (Killed... lol)
    It's just an amazing fast game which is not even that hard to learn, is not like any other ultra competitive Japanese games such as Tekken or KoF which are pretty hard to learn correctly, this is very new-player for both fighters and gamers in general that's why is so amazing, the music is great, characters are interesting in both history and design, Killer Cuts is just a must listen...
    And the Game Boy port is just amazing, even with the limitations they managed to create a REAL GB Fighter, not like those crappy games like Mortal Kombat I and 3, THIS is a real deal, it has a very fast system, and many of the combos for the characters present are even there! Simplified but there, might be one of the best Portable fighters, even for GBA ussers, is just an amazing game, and maybe the best fighter for GameBoy, maybe even for the GameBoy Color.
    Also, I don't have an XBOX One, even if I already own a PC and PS4, I have Gold and many things in my XBOX 360, so maybe Killer Instinct and Halo 5 are enough reasons to me to buy the console.
    Thanks for this amazing feel trip video bro, regards from Mexico!

      Killer Instinct is a western fighting game done right unlike Mortal Kombat. This was a game that had smooth gameplay, beautiful graphics and an awesome soundtrack.
      May think I hate western games but that not true. I just think most suck big time. Thankfully Killer Instinct does not. I also love the most recent Xbox One X patch. Seeing the new Killer Instinct in 4K at 60fps is amazing.

    • @averageradiantreplays7702
      @averageradiantreplays7702 6 лет назад

      Nah I don't think you hate western games, In fact, I mostly hate them too, companies such as Midway, Williams and even Atari (After the 2600 era) I think they were just... Overrated, a lot of games that are fun for the first couple of minutes and you are already veeeeery booored (I WILL NEVER EVER Find the appael for games such as Rampage for example... For a game like that I rather prefer playing games like Earth Defense Force... Which is a good game so no point comparing a Casual masterpiece with that casual crap lol).
      Oh man don't make me pull out my wallet too fast haha, the 4K is enough for me, and also the fact buying the game (Ultimate Edition) means I could also play KI 1 and 2 means too much, I'm going to buy a XBOX One X just because of you Retro Core haha.

    Kind of hilarious the FMV backgrounds, such a storage heavy approach for the time as that would never fit on an Ultra64 cart. ^_^ I never minded the dial-a-combo approach in KI since it was doing it's own thing but didn't like it much in MK3.
    SNES port turned out pretty good considering what a crunch it was to fit most of the game inside. Kind of nuts the GB port in just the attempt but at least it looks decent and controls well enough. If that is true about the Xbone port being actually ported rather than emulated I'm impressed, you get a lot better performance that way.

    You can tell that the Xbox one version is indeed emulation, for the fact on Jago's stage the "outside" (beyond the pillers) part of his stage is missing and is black. Exact same thing happens when running the game on mame. And also, seems like it would be been a lot of work to port version 1.4 and 1.5d.

    Killer Instinct Ratings:
    Arcade: 12/10 (In a rare moment of rating history, the arcade original manages to break the 10 star mark and go beyond. Whereas Mortal Kombat did a poor job at trying to make the characters seem real, this game makes the characters more real than the MK series. Also, the "attract" mode at the beginning tells you it's going to come out on the Nintendo 64, but when it did, it was a completely different game.)
    Super Famicom: 3.0/10 (I'm sorry, is it Super Famicom or Super Fami-crap? I could've sworn it was Super Famicom.)
    Game Boy: 0.0/10 (This port is worse than the Super Famicom version! This is bad, and when I say bad, I mean BAD AS F**K.)
    XBOX One: 9000!/10 (Now this is what I'm talking about. While it looks like arcade emulation, it's much more than that. Because of this, this version of the game gets over 9000 stars. That's way more than the Arcade version. It's just that good!)
    In short, the XBOX One is awesome and the Game Boy is crap. Yeah, just like the other Game Boy games and bootlegs bar the official Pokemon games.
