Turning around at an arcade knowing you annihilated your opponent before you were even declared the winner was absolutely so epic. Without question KI is my favorite fighting game and that music....got me so pumped.
When I was a kid there was a Killer Instinct arcade machine at the ice rink where I took hockey classes and I HATED hockey but told my parents I loved it just so I could keep going to play KI 😅
spending hours and hours in the training mode for KI gold on the n64 when i was 9 yrs old trying to master every character's combos and special moves is how i got into playing fighting games and i feel so lucky that my mom got KI gold for me instead of super mario 64 (which was sold out everywhere at the time)
Killer instinct was the....I remember exactly where I was when I heard the announcer when I wandered into the arcade and followed the sound and then saw a guy doing orchids ultra combo....blew me away. I am so glad ki2013 is getting updates....but I would gladly give money for characters like rash and Mira to get their own stages
KI is my second favourite fighting franchise after The King of Fighters. Awesome video, KI needs more love! I worked with James Goddard a few years ago who was a part of the KI development team for the third game. Fantastic designer and had a few stories that you already nailed the details on in your prior coverage of the game. The soundtrack for all three games always gives me goosebumps!
I was 9 when this came out, and we had a charity tournament at school. I did the revival input and squeezed out a win - only to be disqualified for cheating. My protests that it was in the manual and therefore fair game fell on the teacher's deaf ears. I'm 40 in January and I still burn with rage.

I'm a pretty new KI fan, having just played the series for the first time THIS YEAR after importing a physical copy of Killer Instinct: Complete Edition, which for some reason has English and Arabic on the box art. Cheapest way to buy it, and it runs on my XBSX. And it came with TWO codes from Gold Gargos for some reason. Anyway. I really, really like the KI reboot, and I'm excited to see where the series can evolve. Aganos and Riptor are my favourites.
@@bluedistortions I think the SNES version is better overall having all the characters and 6 buttons. However the GB version does indeed have some stuff missing from the SNES, like certain shadow moves and Spinal clone shenanigans.
One of my earliest vivid memories is me playing killer instinct with my mum and dad the day i got the SNES which was my first game console. KI always has a special place in my heart
Really amazed by this format. Please do Oddworld! I would love to see some more about the backstage stories surrounding the never released Hand of Odd!
These KI/2 units were something special in arcades when I was a kid... The soundtrack, graphics, fmv, and they always seemed a bit louder than other machines so you could hear them from all over. To me these felt special to play even though I wasn't much good at KI
When I was a kid, probably 10 or 11 at the time, me and my friends at the local community club somehow got to eyedol in arcade mode in that sky stage and it was the trippiest thing ever, non of us had nintendo power or anything, getting to eyedol was a complete surprise. So for the next few months one summer we all tried to figure it out, how the hell did we fight eyedol? During that time period, KI quickly became my favorite game on the SNES, we spent probably hundreds of hours playing it in a single summer and got so hooked that I was a fan for life and for closure, I did figure out how to fight him again and after months of fighting through the arcade mode, I did beat him with cinder, all of us 11-12 year olds playing this ridiculously intense game for our age were freaking the fuck out. Golden memories from childhood, this video brought me right back and I thought I'd share the quest to fight eyedol.
Killer Instinct has always been my favorite fighting game. In the 90’s I used to stay up all night studying the strategy guides and then go to the arcade the next day and play KI until I ran out of quarters. When the Super Nintendo version came out I was so happy!
This was the game that got me into the genre. I'm a very casual fan of most fighters; they never held my attention for too long, but when I discovered Max when KI 2013 got super huge, that was such a special moment in time for me. Killer Instinct got me in 95, and it got me again nearly 20 years later. I never played the 2013 version, but I watched countless hours of it. The combo videos were so fun because the announcer was so hype.
Killer Instinct, the video game, has truly captivated my attention and admiration with its exceptional gameplay and rich content. As an ardent fan, I appreciate the meticulous attention to detail that the developers have poured into crafting this immersive experience. The game's diverse roster of characters, intricate combo system, and stunning visuals have undoubtedly raised the bar for fighting games in the industry. I eagerly anticipate future updates and expansions, as Killer Instinct continues to solidify its position as a benchmark for excellence in the gaming community.
50:08 wait 6 million concurrents players? Are you sure it’s not another metric, like 6 million unique users or Ltd players? 6 million concurrents would have made KI, like the biggest game on Steam six times over (CS does get more than 1.2m concurrents)
My bro and I played a ton of Killer INstinct on our SNES! We got it used so it didn't come with the killer Kuts CD, unfortunately. Also, I pulled a prank on my bro where I was secretly practicing playing this game where he hadn't even touched the game in decades and when he flew out for Christmas one year. I was like "What if we hooked up the SNES and gamed a little" and I waited to make Killer Instinct the third game we played and I unloaded on him with a PERFECT victory on him with CInder where I, of course, used a humiliation on him. He was as proud of me, his little brother, as he was furious.
I was never much for fighting games, but I can't deny how amazing KI's music is. I could listen to Mick Gordan's masterful work all day...and often do.
I first found killer instinct at a garage sale for the n64. I saw a black cartridge and a skeleton warrior on the front and I had to have it not knowing it was a fighting game. It single handedly got me to love fighting games.
Thanks Matt, I have always loved your videos but this one was special. Not because I am a specially big fan of KI but I watched it on the commute from the card game store back to my house and it was so interesting and fun that the 1 hour commute just flew by. Always happy to see your uploads with the usual McMuscles humor.
KI2 is still my personal favorite fighting game. I have the Game Frans KI2 strategy guide and GampePro #92 with Jago and Glacius on the cover in my magazine archives. I used to have the SNES game (but the Killer Kuts CD survived to this day). Thank you for putting together such a wonderful tribute to the great third triforce piece of mid-90s fighting game series (SF2 and MK2 were the others, obviously)

Killer Instinct has such a special place in my family. My younger cousin and I used to play it non-stop, would even host tournaments during family get togethers. My older cousin dropped out of his senior year of high school to become the KI Gold boss at the local GameWorks.
Yo Matt, fantastic video!!!! Talk about unbelievably good timing that this video was released before the surprise update iron galaxy and Max showed that the 2013 game is finally getting love since it's last update that many years ago. This is a happy time for many fans of the series and for the franchise that we may finally get more content. The 2013 game really hold the test of time as one of the best fighting games and now might get a continuation in the future!!!
I remember the black SNES cartridge and bonus Killer Cuts CD. I was a kid & my big bro was masterful at Street Fighter & Mortal Kombat. But I kicked his butt on Killer Instict! All had to do was mash buttons & rock out 😂
Killer Instinct has always been my favorite fighter. I new everyone's combos and still do. Even jammed with the cd that came with the game along with the Xmen Children Of The Atom CD. Great Childhood memories.
Has anyone else managed to BSOD the KI2 arcade cabinets? Back in the day, I've been able to do it with TJ, been meaning to check if it somehow worked on the Xbox port.
I wonder if the Sega Saturn or PS1 could do a port of Killer Instinct because they could in theory stream the video from the CD and a number of games have previously used streaming video as backgrounds. It was not done to the same quality on the N64 console @ Killer Instinct Gold
They would not be able to read back and forth those backgrounds like arcade machines did thanks to HDD. Also loading times were very long on them. KIG was still a great game for its time in comparison to what was available on Saturn and PS1.
@@WWammyy Again. KI Arcade loads stage background assets in a form of frames based on stage scrolling. The same way characters are animated. Streaming a video is a different thing. You can't synchronize it with stage scrolling. Also for your information I had PS1 console in the 90s and I played games like Fear Effect where a background was a streamed looped video.

@@WWammyy Again. You do not understand how those backgrounds work on Arcade machines. They are just frames taken from 3D models that were created on dedicated graphical computers. Each frame is synchronized with a displayed part of background. It is not a video format. Thanks to HDD it was possible to quickly load each frame in real time. And no, Silpheed just plays video directly from CD. This trick is not even new as it was done in the 80s on arcade machines with laserdisc players. KI backgrounds are software and hardware feature. Again streaming video directly from CD is not the same.
While I loved the Netherrealm added Jason Voorhees in MKX, I always thought he'd have been a better guest character in K.I. Big Jason getting an ULTRA-COMBO with his machete would pretty much make my life worth living. I'd spend hours trying to pull that off.
That black snes cart lived in my older bros snes for months . Cracking that first Ultra combo with my main, thunder, is something I'll never forget. I also loved spinal and his stage track.
Great video, Matt! Love seeing KI get some love in any capacity, I only just started playing it about 2 years ago and very happy that I was introduced to it.
Gordon’s Doom soundtrack is the first video game soundtrack I purchased since the original KI SNES cd. I feel like it came with Nintendo Power that year, but I don’t remember. So good!
Every time you say "Killer Instinct" i say it again in my head in the original badass voice over and then that OG guitar riff starts after. Every time.
I just want to say your content is fantastic. I think we’re about the same age and about the same dorkiness- good to know there is someone out there with your game knowledge and finger on the pulse of all previous Kung Pow and Linkin Park enthusiasts.
I remember going to a close friend of my mom's and playing KI with her son, he was years older older than me and beat my ass but the character designs and setpieces were so iconic. I never realized we were playing KI until now.
I was just thinking about Killer Instinct today due to working on my own character being somewhat similar to Sabrewulf and then this shows up in my feed. Love it.
I was just listening to your Fatal Fury Retrospective today and was thinking about how we desperately needed another one. Thank you so much for posting this!
Interesting that they had the idea for a card that holds data for an arcade game in 1993 now that we have things like e-Amusement and BANAPASSPORT cards that hold all your data for your favourite Konami/Bemani and Namco arcade games respectively.
"Look at that. Everyone just living in the moment. Not a cellphone in sight." Boy oh boy how I miss these days. And Matt stating it like that, really hit hard!
KI and MK2 are the first fighting games i ever played. Never really got into any of the games after the first one, but will always remember playing that one on snes
20:14 fun fact Matt, Fatal Fury Special had the exact same parry in 1993. It’s called “Defensive Attack” done by pressing F+A while blocking. Can even be done while proximity blocking funny enough.
"Tooth and Claw" from Killer Cuts is an awesome piece and will have permanent residence on every Halloween music playlist I make for the rest of my life.
Growing up I loved KI on SNES because I would mostly button smash any fighting game I played, so I could pull off big combos and even revivals; especially with Fulgore. I had the CD and would play it on my PS1 and you could actually select specific tracks and had like an interface from what I remember.
This was Great to watch! So many memories from KI1 and gold. Remember before KI1 launched for the SNES, there was a small ad in a swedish video game magazine, simply stating: "They say I've shed blood, but what is blood for if not shedding." Which was more than enough for the 13 year old me to start saving up for a copy😂
I totally forgot about the music cd, it was a nice reminder. I enjoyed this is video, MM. Looking forward to what you tackle on next.

KI has a special place in my life, I knew the existance of it through a mexican gaming magazine called "Club Nintendo" which was one of few that could be found in my country, Chile. When I saw the renders I was completely blown away but it took me 2 years to watch and listen to the arcade machine !!! at that moment I fell in love with it and having the arcade version at home, was the strongest reason for getting an Xbox One :)
I absolutely loved the original Killer Instinct on the SNES. It got me into the fighting game genre. The technology used was impressive back then too. It reminds me of how DKC did the same graphical visuals.
Usually when I think about what games I actually played on the SNES as I didn't have the classics (like Super Mario World or Link To The Past) I usually come up with the Mortal Kombats and WWF Raw and WrestleMania Arcade Game. But I've actually sank many many hours into Killer Instinct as well.
I rememebr playing this at the arcades and it was simply revolutionary, i even figured out a cheat to use eyedol, but ic an't remember it now. Somethign about pressing a precise combo of keys/direction after inserting coins and before pressing the start
KI 2013 is the best fighting game ever. From the practice mode, the soundtracks, the unique roster, the freaking particle effects, and etc etc etc. Unfortunatley, there's only downside for KI 2013: it feels way more fun to play it instead of watching some pro match
Man I remember being like 7 at Walmart and I asked my mom for mortal Kombat 64. Well she had heard that the game was super violent and wouldn't get it for me, so I chose killer instinct gold instead. So glad I chose KI iv loved the series since ❤
And the 2013 release is getting an update with matchmaking and balance changes when it's last update was five years ago. That's how much this series means to its community, they kept it going and keep it going strong
This was such trip down memory lane, playing both KI and KI2 at the arcade. My main motivator for getting an Xbox 360 was to get the rebooted KI game. I may fall victim again should there be another release in future.

While I loved the Netherrealm added Jason Voorhees in MKX, I always thought he'd have been a better guest character in K.I. Big Jason getting an ULTRA-COMBO with his machete would pretty much make my life worth living. I'd spend hours trying to pull that off.
TJ combo is my favorite 🥊
That black snes cart lived in my older bros snes for months .
Cracking that first Ultra combo with my main, thunder, is something I'll never forget.
I also loved spinal and his stage track.
Great video, Matt! Love seeing KI get some love in any capacity, I only just started playing it about 2 years ago and very happy that I was introduced to it.
Matt I'm not even 5 minutes in and I already want to listen to the KI soundtrack.
I like Virtua Fighter, but I'd be willing to bet more people would put Smash Bros or Dead or Alive above Virtua Fighter.
Pllleeeaaaaseeee do more of these retrospective type videos for literally any game! I enjoyed this so damn much
The latest killer instinct is so amazing, and really has aged like the finest wine.
I remember going to a close friend of my mom's and playing KI with her son, he was years older older than me and beat my ass but the character designs and setpieces were so iconic. I never realized we were playing KI until now.
Rival Schools, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, & Guilty Gear for me! 💛
I wished more people liked bloody roar..:( its such a great series of fighting games
"Oh no, it's Riptor! [rarghraagaha]" has been playing on loop in my brain for the last 24 hours
I'm just grateful KI was never sacrificed to the Kinect
I was just thinking about Killer Instinct today due to working on my own character being somewhat similar to Sabrewulf and then this shows up in my feed. Love it.
This was amazing coverage. KI would def be on my Mt Rushmore as well!
Still playing Killer Instinct to this day. Love this game like you wouldn't believe.
Finally some quality content. I’m pre-liking this vid. But if I won’t hear Orchid theme from KI2 during a vid, I will take that like back
I was just listening to your Fatal Fury Retrospective today and was thinking about how we desperately needed another one. Thank you so much for posting this!
What an incredible retrospective! For someone who has never played KI I really want to now!
I love KI so much! Thanks for this retrospect, Matt!
8:20 It depends on the level, for example this next one (rooftop) has a 3D arena
The way things looked and played on the KI arcade blew my mind back then
And that soundtrack awesome
I was wondering where today's Matt McMuscles video was, and HOO BOY I got a winner of a video today! 😁
I see this as a Supreme Victory for sure :)
I'm still waiting for this to come to my home in 1995 ONLY ON NINTENDO ULTRA 64!
Mick Gordon's OST was the greatest thing to come from the series
KI 2013 is the best fighting game ever. From the practice mode, the soundtracks, the unique roster, the freaking particle effects, and etc etc etc. Unfortunatley, there's only downside for KI 2013: it feels way more fun to play it instead of watching some pro match
Man I remember being like 7 at Walmart and I asked my mom for mortal Kombat 64. Well she had heard that the game was super violent and wouldn't get it for me, so I chose killer instinct gold instead. So glad I chose KI iv loved the series since ❤
Clayfighter is on my Mt Rushmore
And the 2013 release is getting an update with matchmaking and balance changes when it's last update was five years ago. That's how much this series means to its community, they kept it going and keep it going strong
I have distinct memories of being 7 years old, playing Killer Instinct at my buddies house. The 90’s were the best.
You had to have some seriously fast hands/fingers to chain combos in KI. One of my most favorite combo systems in any fighting game.
Finally the KI video I have been waiting for
Got excited to see someone else talking about KI. I had to dust off my shadow jago statue just for this
This was such trip down memory lane, playing both KI and KI2 at the arcade. My main motivator for getting an Xbox 360 was to get the rebooted KI game. I may fall victim again should there be another release in future.
Bruh this was my game back in the day. I always wanted this game to be made into a movie because the plot was just that cheesy, but in a good, 90s way lol.
This is the first time i ever watched a video from this Amazing guy. Honestly it make me cried from joy, From Argentina im another super fan of KI, let's cross finger's for the Return of the best fighting game EVER. ULTRAAAAAAAAAAAAA
KI2 had as close to whole roster character design perfection as possible
Absolute loved KI 1&2. KI Gold was good
