KI 2013 What Happened Episode - • Killer Instinct (2013)...
Designing Killer Instinct Mick Gordon Documentary - • Mick Gordon On Killer ...
I'm at EVO right now and was watching the KI Exhibition Event, just to see Max appear on the big screen and help announce that Killer Instinct 2013 is getting a 10th Anniversary Balance Update! Along with technical bumps on Xbox Series S/X! He didn't tell me SHIT about this update! lol 2nd time in a row covering a semi-dormant franchise has resulted in some new announcements soon after! Power Stone/Rival Schools/Bloody Roar next please?
You need to drop a Power Stone retrospective so that a new Power Stone, or a compilation at least, becomes a thing, Matt!
Matt the prophet~!
The timing is strong with this man
Max read your text to him diuring his live restream while chat was WTFing at him, since he made a 500 gift sub bet that there would be nothing about KI, KNOWING THERE WOULD BE. His reaction during TKO this week was also brought up, where in hindsight you can see he knew but couldn't say anything.
I mean...spoilers for the Capcom Ransomware leak from before the pandemic:
PowerStone and Final Fight remakes were listed for the next few years. Release dates are fubar due to the pandemic, but still!
They are 100% gonna announce a sequel to KI 2013 when this anniversary update comes out. Iron Galaxy are 'suddenly' back doing support for a game they haven't touched in five years, and DJames walks out on the EVO stage with the fancy new title "Head of Killer Instinct". There's no way they aren't making a new one.
I really hope you are right 🤞🏼
Please don’t let this comment be on “poorly aged things” pls pls pls pls pls
Unfortunately they didn't 🙃
I ask james at evo if a new ki is being made he said no
but you are right a new ki will be made especially on their 30th anniversary of the game
They really need to complete the current one first
When I was a kid there was a Killer Instinct arcade machine at the ice rink where I took hockey classes and I HATED hockey but told my parents I loved it just so I could keep going to play KI 😅
I’ve literally been listening to the Killer Instinct OST all of today, and you drop this. Great timing.
Love that 1994 Killer Cuts album. Still a banger!
You have good taste
I was playing the og theme just a moment ago
Bro, I had listened to Gargos theme from KI2/Gold…what a banger!
Me too, I always listen every KI themes.
Killer instinct was the....I remember exactly where I was when I heard the announcer when I wandered into the arcade and followed the sound and then saw a guy doing orchids ultra combo....blew me away. I am so glad ki2013 is getting updates....but I would gladly give money for characters like rash and Mira to get their own stages
spending hours and hours in the training mode for KI gold on the n64 when i was 9 yrs old trying to master every character's combos and special moves is how i got into playing fighting games and i feel so lucky that my mom got KI gold for me instead of super mario 64 (which was sold out everywhere at the time)
I was 9 when this came out, and we had a charity tournament at school. I did the revival input and squeezed out a win - only to be disqualified for cheating. My protests that it was in the manual and therefore fair game fell on the teacher's deaf ears. I'm 40 in January and I still burn with rage.
Your school fkd up it was teen rated, disqualify them for not checking age restrictions 😂
@@dafuquwnt7170 this was the mid 90s my dude. The ESRB was brand new and not legally binding, all adults thought games were for kids. My nan had a fit when Duke 3d came out 😂
KI is my second favourite fighting franchise after The King of Fighters. Awesome video, KI needs more love!
I worked with James Goddard a few years ago who was a part of the KI development team for the third game. Fantastic designer and had a few stories that you already nailed the details on in your prior coverage of the game.
The soundtrack for all three games always gives me goosebumps!
Killer Instinct was my brother and I’s go-to. Sure we liked Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, but nothing got hours logged in like Killer Instinct. Fulgore was his guy and Orchid was my girl. Good, good times with those OG titles. Thanks for the excuse to relive those memories. My brother unfortunately passed years ago and video games were such an important part of our bond. So it’s nice to have excuses like this to remember him. 🙏
Killer Instinct is an amazing series with no misses. It's that good. I wish more people played it.
Really amazed by this format. Please do Oddworld! I would love to see some more about the backstage stories surrounding the never released Hand of Odd!
0:23 Matt has drafted the Mount Rushmore of Brazil
I'm a pretty new KI fan, having just played the series for the first time THIS YEAR after importing a physical copy of Killer Instinct: Complete Edition, which for some reason has English and Arabic on the box art. Cheapest way to buy it, and it runs on my XBSX. And it came with TWO codes from Gold Gargos for some reason. Anyway. I really, really like the KI reboot, and I'm excited to see where the series can evolve. Aganos and Riptor are my favourites.
The timing on this vídeo is perfect. Right after the announcement of Killer Instinct coming back baby!
Killer Instinct, the video game, has truly captivated my attention and admiration with its exceptional gameplay and rich content. As an ardent fan, I appreciate the meticulous attention to detail that the developers have poured into crafting this immersive experience. The game's diverse roster of characters, intricate combo system, and stunning visuals have undoubtedly raised the bar for fighting games in the industry. I eagerly anticipate future updates and expansions, as Killer Instinct continues to solidify its position as a benchmark for excellence in the gaming community.
These KI/2 units were something special in arcades when I was a kid... The soundtrack, graphics, fmv, and they always seemed a bit louder than other machines so you could hear them from all over. To me these felt special to play even though I wasn't much good at KI
I’m so glad I got to grow up in this era. I was 13 and nobody in my arcade could touch me in this game
I was never much for fighting games, but I can't deny how amazing KI's music is. I could listen to Mick Gordan's masterful work all day...and often do.
Me and my friends were just chatting about killer instinct the other day on our discord server, so this was a neat coincidence.
Still playing Killer Instinct to this day. Love this game like you wouldn't believe.
While I loved the Netherrealm added Jason Voorhees in MKX, I always thought he'd have been a better guest character in K.I. Big Jason getting an ULTRA-COMBO with his machete would pretty much make my life worth living. I'd spend hours trying to pull that off.
Gordon’s Doom soundtrack is the first video game soundtrack I purchased since the original KI SNES cd. I feel like it came with Nintendo Power that year, but I don’t remember. So good!
"Tooth and Claw" from Killer Cuts is an awesome piece and will have permanent residence on every Halloween music playlist I make for the rest of my life.
A video on "Rival Schools" would be good. That's a rare classic
I'm just grateful KI was never sacrificed to the Kinect
This video coming out on the same day they announced that Killer Instinct 2013 is making a comeback is some absolutely phenomenal timing
KI has a special place in my life, I knew the existance of it through a mexican gaming magazine called "Club Nintendo" which was one of few that could be found in my country, Chile. When I saw the renders I was completely blown away but it took me 2 years to watch and listen to the arcade machine !!! at that moment I fell in love with it and having the arcade version at home, was the strongest reason for getting an Xbox One :)
Killer Instinct has such a special place in my family. My younger cousin and I used to play it non-stop, would even host tournaments during family get togethers.
My older cousin dropped out of his senior year of high school to become the KI Gold boss at the local GameWorks.
This was Great to watch! So many memories from KI1 and gold. Remember before KI1 launched for the SNES, there was a small ad in a swedish video game magazine, simply stating: "They say I've shed blood, but what is blood for if not shedding." Which was more than enough for the 13 year old me to start saving up for a copy😂
Killer Instinct has always been my favorite fighter. I new everyone's combos and still do. Even jammed with the cd that came with the game along with the Xmen Children Of The Atom CD. Great Childhood memories.
Interesting that they had the idea for a card that holds data for an arcade game in 1993 now that we have things like e-Amusement and BANAPASSPORT cards that hold all your data for your favourite Konami/Bemani and Namco arcade games respectively.
That black snes cart lived in my older bros snes for months .
Cracking that first Ultra combo with my main, thunder, is something I'll never forget.
I also loved spinal and his stage track.
KI2 had as close to whole roster character design perfection as possible
I remember going to a close friend of my mom's and playing KI with her son, he was years older older than me and beat my ass but the character designs and setpieces were so iconic. I never realized we were playing KI until now.
And the 2013 release is getting an update with matchmaking and balance changes when it's last update was five years ago. That's how much this series means to its community, they kept it going and keep it going strong
Yo Matt, fantastic video!!!! Talk about unbelievably good timing that this video was released before the surprise update iron galaxy and Max showed that the 2013 game is finally getting love since it's last update that many years ago. This is a happy time for many fans of the series and for the franchise that we may finally get more content. The 2013 game really hold the test of time as one of the best fighting games and now might get a continuation in the future!!!
Finally some quality content. I’m pre-liking this vid. But if I won’t hear Orchid theme from KI2 during a vid, I will take that like back
I absolutely loved the original Killer Instinct on the SNES. It got me into the fighting game genre. The technology used was impressive back then too. It reminds me of how DKC did the same graphical visuals.
20:14 fun fact Matt, Fatal Fury Special had the exact same parry in 1993. It’s called “Defensive Attack” done by pressing F+A while blocking. Can even be done while proximity blocking funny enough.
The latest killer instinct is so amazing, and really has aged like the finest wine.
I was wondering where today's Matt McMuscles video was, and HOO BOY I got a winner of a video today! 😁
Maaaan that Cinder theme from the SNES days STILL SLAPS. I STILL own that soundtrack CD i got with the game and still works even!. 🤘🤘
Absolutely adored this video. Thanks for the hard work.
Rival Schools, UMK3, KI Gold and King of Fighters 98 would be my top fighting games.
Another excellent retrospective, this being the second one where I really like the subject ( first one was the TMNT fighters). Insightful and full of passion and energy, well done 👍
What an incredible retrospective! For someone who has never played KI I really want to now!
I just want to say your content is fantastic. I think we’re about the same age and about the same dorkiness- good to know there is someone out there with your game knowledge and finger on the pulse of all previous Kung Pow and Linkin Park enthusiasts.
Bruh this was my game back in the day. I always wanted this game to be made into a movie because the plot was just that cheesy, but in a good, 90s way lol.
Ah, the memories. I used to count combo hits back in my arcade days. Naturally I've still got both soundtracks on CD.
Mick Gordon's work on the reboot was absolutely incredible- Aganos's theme is my favorite piece of game music ever- but I don't think people give Celldweller and Atlas Plug enough credit for filling in on the third season.
Matt I'm not even 5 minutes in and I already want to listen to the KI soundtrack.
THIS GAME WAS MY CHILDHOOD. AND MY TEENAGE HOOD. DEFINITELY UP THERE WITH SF , SAMSHO AND MK. THAT'S MY RUSHMORE OF THE FGC.
Oh... I did really enjoy Killer Instinct on the SNES, but I was much more casually into it, and dumb kid me had no idea Killer Instinct Gold was actually Killer Instinct 2. I just wrote it off assuming it was an enhanced version of the first game and never really looked into it. We could only afford so many video games so I had other priorities, yet had I known it was actually the sequel I would have loved to have it back then.
I'm 40 this year and I grew up playing this game when it was on arcade. I knew a few people who were REALLY good at the arcade I went to and they trained me. I still remember everyone's combos and ultras to this day lol. If you don't like charge characters, this is NOT the game for you lmao
speaking of fighting game rushmores, i wish the soulcalibur series was included in more of them than just mine.
we don't speak of V, but every other game defined some of the greatest memories of my upbringing man.
i don't know if i'll ever get to see VII, but i owe a lot of happiness to SC
The early 90s fighting games are simply the best still to this day.
Not that you would of known but there was a guy in the UK called Stephen Adams who was partly responsible in helping get KI back to relevence back in 2013, so much so that I think Iron Galaxy used his surname as ARIA's creator.
"Oh no, it's Riptor! [rarghraagaha]" has been playing on loop in my brain for the last 24 hours
This was amazing coverage. KI would def be on my Mt Rushmore as well!
I snagged the Fulgore Player 2 statue. Was on the fence for Sabrewulf, but on a waitlist for it now.
When it comes to fighting games and the mount Rushmore of them. I'd say mine was Mk, killer instinct, tekken and bloody roar. And as an honorary mention street fighter ex plus alpha 2
KI is my go-to fighting game and always has been. The music, fighters and damn that announcer was epic. Everytime i do a combo in another fighting game and just see 5 hits text pop up I get disappointed. I wanna hear my speakers scream at me ULLLLLTTRRAAAA COOMMBOOO!!! The 2013 reboot was fire and I would love another game.
This was such trip down memory lane, playing both KI and KI2 at the arcade. My main motivator for getting an Xbox 360 was to get the rebooted KI game. I may fall victim again should there be another release in future.
"Look at that. Everyone just living in the moment. Not a cellphone in sight." Boy oh boy how I miss these days. And Matt stating it like that, really hit hard!
I love KI so much! Thanks for this retrospect, Matt!
The moment I first saw KI, I fell in love! I love monsters and fighting games! (Even tho I'm not great at them)
All the "2's" were the best.
- Mortal Kombat 2
- Street Fighter II
- Soul Calibur II
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
I played the SNES version of the game few years ago for the first time and was extremely impressed.
I hope we get that version of kI 2 for snes one day.
Proud to be friends with someone who owns that Shadow Jago color
I still can’t wrap my head around this game, like everything about it is super cool but the mechanics go straight over my head
A new KI video? Of course Nervous Nick had to be involved in some way! Great editing job (to him, Gerardo and Jesse too)! Good stuff, people
I love that your love Weapon Lord
Matt: look at his little smile on his face
[*happy Fulgore noises*]
As someone who was only able to play KI1 on the SNES, my mind is blown on how robust KI2'S mechanics were. 13 year old me would have gone nuts.
I haven't played KI 2013 (no xbox). I wonder if there are people to play with in SEA though...
KI is my goat, when i heard that it was going to reboot on the xbox i was quite excired, once i saw it playing i made my decision and bough the origina arcade cabinet instead, the lighting is still disapointing today. Especially after the U64 lie lol. You mentioned the medallion, i bought the chrome wristwatch from the N-gear catalog. I dont think anyone else bought it haha
KI and Weaponlord, are still in my top 5 list.
Mick Gordon did the KI reboot soundtrack? Welp I need this in my ears now
My first video game i ever got in 1998 for the SNES.
Clayfighter is on my Mt Rushmore
OMG killer instinct gameboy was amazing, ahead of it's time. Played amazing, almost console quality. No bs like MK3 or other fighting games.
Man the Gameboy port was insane.
the arrows of the card and the arcade point in different directions during the brute force unique feature bit. i dont know why this bothers me
Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Super Smash Bros.
.
Thats my Rushmore.
.
.
Any chance you could will a new Soulcalibur into existence next?
My Mount Rushmore of fighting games is Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter and Def Jam FFNY
Excellent deep dive! I'd love to see something similar for the TMNT series. I know you've already covered Tournament Fighters a good deal, but more coverage on the Arcade, 8 bit (including the first, non beat em up one), 16 Bit and later entries would be killer. I'm on a massive TMNT kick at the moment, so this is a selfish request in hopes of fueling my need for more Turtle content!
KI Gold's OST is still my favorite fighting game music of all time.
Never knew how deep KI2 was, that is pretty amazing for a game at the time
Killer instinct is my childhood fighting game
I still got the CD somewhere with the original game music. Thankfully, its on my iTunes now so if that CD disappears, i still got that banging music.
I rented this game for the snes after I turned 13. For some reason bloody killer instinct was rated teen(age 13+) whereas sandy mortal kombat was rated m.
Killer Instinct was a game changer.
The main issue with Killer Instinct is that it's always ONLY on ONE console NES only then N64 only now on Xbox ONLY if they ever release KI multi platform with or without preferably with cross play Killer Instinct would stand shoulder to shoulder with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat
I think I might still have my snes cart of this game...
The original killer instinct was a masterpiece from an aesthetic point of view. The mechanics were pretty cool also. Not as deep as some others but watevs
The timing
I REALLY miss this game!😢
So when I was about 11-13 this came out on snes..... I played it so much I was just mashing buttons at the end of fights looking for cool kill moves and did a humiliation. No one believed me lol none of the game magazines had those or even mentioned them. Glad to see this actually in your video.
Lol still waiting for that Orchid statue/figure lol... One day ... 😅😢😭😭😭
That’s a great list! I would add Soul Caliber II & Marvel VS Capcom II
