@@8Kazuja8 tbh The Quiet Man's concept *can* work, the biggest problem being how you do it. Best arcade moment of all time for me was watching my little brother playing this when he was about 10, working to beat the arcade mode with Orchid when a guy twice his age walk up, pop his quarters in, and take over. My brother kicked his butt. Guy swore up a storm, popped more quarters in, and not only got his ass kicked again, but was finished with an Ultra. Jerked was sweating life his life depended on finding new words to use, grabbed his quarters and stormed off. My brother proceeded to beat the game and see the ending. Never been so proud. He was quite good at the game. :-)
i hated crap like that in the arcades there were always punks like that in the arcades my arcades were always good about kicking people like that out when they were discovered ..there was a version of mk2 or 3 that if you beat someone in 2 player it counted for story mode and my bro was like 11 and had tons of people trying to stomp him cause he was a kid that he never fought the computer except for the end but i remember it got to the point where they gave the kids their own section with diff cabnients which had things like lowered difficulty and the like

Let's be honest: This was made to tell Microsoft we need a proper "Killer Instinct Sequel" on the Series X/S. Something to which I'm all for. That and it is actually nice to see a "What happened?" episode for a game that didn't go completely wrong. At least from what I can tell since outside of the launch of six characters, KI had a hell of a run.
Im still amazed of how after surviving what could be a declared path for defeat. This game also brought us some characters we didnt expect in fighting games and delivered them so well. Yes Im talking about Rash, Arbiter and RAAM, maybe Rash was the closer to what we see in fighting games but still the team at Iron Galaxy knew how to introduce those dudes with fitting gameplay and they dont look out of place in KI.
I remember playing this at a secret event in London. Me and my friend (he doesn't speak to me anymore) end up making the characters froze but could only do their taunts... good times 🤣 11:11 🤣🤣🤣 Can't Unsee
Also I learned recently from a documentary by hold back to block that the original KI made the Ultra combo and Combo Breaker sounds about 40% LOUDER than the sound volume level set in the test menu by the arcade operator. A very clever way of attracting attention. I just... LOVE goofy arcade stuff like this

This game was not only my first introduction to the KI series (I’ve known about the previous games but I never got to play them) but also to the musical god, Mick Gordon.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. No fighting game has kept me engaged and kept me coming back like killer instinct. I still play it to this day
This video got me to download this game. As a huge MK mark I gotta say, playing KI for the first time is like a breath of fresh air. This game rules!
This game, and the teams that made it all come together without any negative side-effects, feels like a SUPREME VICTORY to me.
11:11 really caught me off guard lol
I don't get it. They just cut to a photo of the guy without his glasses on??

Another lovely story of a game having everything stacked against it but still coming out a success.
Mick Gordon’s score is so good... I still listen to TJ and Hisako’s theme.
And aganos and The Arbiter's and Arias
TJ's theme showed up in my RUclips mix one day, and I had to tab back and see where it came from, I was instantly bopping to it.
Omen’s Theme is top tier
I listen to Hisako's theme all the time. It's so sick.
littleV also worked with him
Killer Instinct has always been my favorite fighting game series. To bad it doesn't have the recognition other gaming franchises have such as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and others.
killer instinct and primal rage for LIIIIIFE
Killer Instinct is the best fighting game of last generation.
Easy.
I would say tekken is but they really dropped the ball on balancing
Agreed.
The Combo Breaker/Counter Breaker gag was gdlike. Thanks so much for giving me another chance to speak about a project that was so near and dear to me and many other on the teams. #BringBackKI
Loved Killer Instinct since the 1st one in the arcades. Was very excited to see KI come back. Thank you.
KI2 when?!
Killer instinct 2013 is my favorite fighting game and I think it’s combo system that is basically “shared” between all characters makes its fighting mechanics some of the best of all time. I really hope Microsoft makes a killer instinct sequel
I hope that one day you'll make a What Happened all about Conker. I'm sure that a lot could be said about him. And, but this is just wishful thinking, about Battlefield Earth, if only because there's SO much stuff that went wrong while making that movie.
Or he could go for the Battleship: the movie: the game, the one where a WWII Destroyer defeated an advanced Alien Spaceship.
@Dragonlope Thanks! I'll do it now.
Its. Clear what happened to Conner. Not much needs saying. He was a product of the time and rare is dead now.
Or the Will Smith movie After Earth he did with his son
That Wha Happen? probably go something like Conker goes from a kid friendly gameboy game and Diddy Kong Racing character to insane Bad Fur Day game, then Bad Fur Day game gets a remaster on Xbox, and then years later they make some weird augmented reality Conker game I saw in a trailer but never played.
Personally, this is my favorite fighting game. I listen to the soundtrack on a daily basis.

KI sequel on Series X/PC w/cross-play would be perfect.
I still have the original music CD that came my SNES copy of KI :)
Killer Cuts, it was called
still one of my fav fighting games to this day alongside the original
Agreed. Woefully underrated game!
@@DarthG33k Underrated ?????
SF5 was a big FIASCO
@@remyroland8016 I'm confused. What does SF5 have to do with KI being underrated?
I was never good at this game, but I enjoyed many hours playing against my boyfriend- who put so much time in that he ended up as a mod on the KI forums. We're married now and he still loves the game. And yes, Hisako waifu was my go to. XD
A story of people planning, executing that plan, being freaking professionals with the hand off... it's just beautiful.
Seeing this live when I went to EVO. That crowd was awesome and the huge noises and announcer made it even better.
You know, a fighting game that managed to have a 4-year lifespan, especially when the start is very tumultuous and chaotic, is actually really impressive.
2013 to 2018 was an amazing time to be a KI fan. The character reveals, tournaments, music and community were all so good.
Wasn’t expecting this game to be in this series
Was this really a Wha Happun? Felt more like a dual fan hype video. Which is fine, but not what I'd expect from this series either. "Team makes decent game" seems kind of a mediocre pitch for a wha happun.
@@thetaarakian it already has been said in other episodes that the series is not only for flops, but for other projects that shouldn't have worked, but did anyway, like a reverse flop, just watch the Demon's Souls video for example
@@thetaarakian and not only that, but not crush, no over the budget, no massive fire, no player outrage, no delays and no killer gliches.
yeah KI 2013 was not a Flop
Even if what the replies are saying is true, then that intro is pretty misleading about the series' concept.
KI's always gonna have a special place in my heart.
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood must have a fascinating story.
We don't mention that in which was yeeted from existence.
I would do a Whu Happun? on Archie Comics and how they handled Sonic te Hedgehog for maximum insanity.

This is probably the smoothest wha Happun ever.
Just snatched this game on Steam, haven’t put it down since, I love this game.

KI Remake is a fantastic game and I hope and pray it does come back for different gaming consoles. By the way the KI Remake soundtrack is fucking fantastic and is one of my favorites.
One of my favorite games ever. I will never forget how much fun I had playing this.
Dude I literally have goosebumps over my entire body right now. I don't play KI, but god damn if it isn't one of the hypest fucking games to watch. This game DESERVES to continue onward. Microsoft need to give it a Series X version and announce a new season. I don't want it to just be relegated to side tournaments and be a 'what if' in the industry. I want KI to combo breaker my ass into oblivion and become a fighting game empire. #BringBackKI
@@TexasHollowEarth That's the problem with Microsoft. They don't view the Xbox as a true gaming machine, but as a multimedia hub. They have access to so many great IP's, but lack the focus and dedication to pure gaming to do anything meaningful with them. It's exactly why Sony's PS will ALWAYS be the more successful gaming console.

I'm so glad I got to Skype with James Goddard after Shadow Lords came out. It is the highest point of my gaming life. I got to influence a portion of my favorite series of all time through him after I broke the game mode so badly a couple of my clips managed to catch his attention and we chatted about how to fix some of the things I found. It was such an amazing moment and wouldn't have happened if KI wasn't such a community passion project.
Hey Matt, not sure if you will see this, but I wanted to comment on the noticeable increase in production quality in these What Happened videos. There is a lot more animation, new artwork, and that opening keeps getting more complex. I like what you are doing and it feels good to support a creator that strives to improve their product as much as you do. Jason (the editor as per the last screen) is doing an amazing job.
I’m a PlayStation and Nintendo guy but if Microsoft makes Killer Instinct 2 for Series X’S I might just buy one down the road.
Given the amount of money they are throwing around, it is just a matter of time.
The game is on pc, via the Ms store and steam, Ms store version has cross play with consoles.
Me too. I was thinking about buying a ps5 or series X. I'm new to KI I've never played it before. It looks more fun than MK.
@@Flyingsandwiches-nr1zc it is tons fun, combos are great, each character is unique (no Ryu, Ken and Akuma situation ) and in mp there is a lot of mind games with combo breakers and counter breakers.
I remember playing this on stream. Had some fun, loved the Mick Gordon OST.
Was just binging watching older vids of yours and BAM. That fresh content. Truly blessed.
Man, this game was a legit miracle. In any other hands. The game would have been a huge failure on par with Dookie Nookie Forever.... But instead, we somehow got a masterpiece in the fighting game genre. I can't stress enough how amazing both dev teams were with this game. They deserve so much praise.
This game and Mortal Kombat 9 are the prime examples of how to do a proper reboot. Killer Instinct is my childhood and the new one is my welcome back to an old friend
A testament to both studios that they managed to achieve so much with so few resources and under those conditions.
God, I remember when Killer Instinct first came out during the dinosaur times I stood in the arcade just mesmerised by the "advanced" graphics. Like, I thought games would pretty much look like that forever because where else was there to go? Man, technology is crazy.
Remembered playing KI and KI2 in the arcades, and doing those insane combos. Then recently a friend found a copy of KI2 for the 64. Its been almost 22 years since, I played this game and I managed to do those insane combos like it was yesterday man. The smile on my face was priceless.
Nice to see you two Collab, I'm happy this video really shows how great and unique the story behind KI 2013 was.
As someone who owns Killer Instinct on Super NES which I still have I was super excited when it was announced on Xbox One and was my primary reason to finally purchasing one with no regrets it was a fun game and still is! 🙎♂️
this game is absolutely amazing. Arguably one of the best fighting games out there and the best fighting game to start playing fighting games.
I really didn't pay much attention to this game at first, I thought it was going to flop hard with that business model. I'm glad I was wrong, they did an amazing job.
I remember when my local arcade growing up received KI 1 arcade cabinet. For about a month nobody wanted to play it and just stuck to games like Samurai Showdown, Tekken, and MK. One day 2 kids just started playing and slowly interest shifted away from MK and Tekken but went back playing them occasionally for kids to take on the number one player.
Max's reaction to the KI reveal is still one of my favorite videos on the internet.
2:54 Okay but the way that Banjo opened his eyes just strikes fear into my soul.
Mick is a beast. A god teir ost that put him on the map thanks to this game.
I'd like to nominate The Quiet Man for a rundown. What the hell happened with that game?
@@8Kazuja8 tbh The Quiet Man's concept *can* work, the biggest problem being how you do it. The Quiet Man was done in a way that made it inaccessible to even abled players until you beat the game once after a patch was released, and outright offensive at worst with how inconsistently it portrayed deafness.
But at the same time, that makes it a top-tier example of how to *not* handle or portray disability in media. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice this is not.
That was the most pretentious bs I've ever seen in my life
@@8Kazuja8 tbh I think it's pretty obvious that they never consulted any deaf people during production.
I think its gimmick *can* work, but the way how The Quiet Man handled it was wholly awful. It's inaccessible to deaf people, it's inaccessible to non-deaf(?) people and the way how its creator explained the gimmick was pretentious as hell. I think it was something about thinking back to when you were a baby and didn't understand language, which is just... what.
I bet all the info will be kept quiet.
Teared up. I love this game and this franchise. It's such a fantastic love letter to music, sound design, characters, fun, and fighting games. Somewhere in my dna (you could say, my double helix huehue) there's KI logo's imprinted on every strand. I'm proud to have been a fan of it, have the world's largest KI collection, and be a part of the amazing community that has been created since it's inception. #BringbackKI #LongLiveKI
Thank you both for finally explaining to me why tf there was a amazing free game with only 1 playable character and for giving me a reason to go back and buy it.
It’s very cool that everyone’s goal in this project was to make the _best damn game possible._
20:25 That callout tickles me something fierce.
Good to hear of a story that, generally, has a lot of good backstory to it, despite the issues that do plague it along the way. Last one in this series I recall having a wholesome progression is Demon's Souls, which...
...well, we know how that turned out now.
Really hope that we get a new KI game on Xbox Series X or maybe even a guest spot in Super Smash Brothers (perhaps Jago or Fulgore).
I'd rather they continue the current KI than risk rebuilding a new game from the ground up.
Already bad that KI was under a budget.
Started playing it a few days ago. LOVE IT!
Name me a better gaming duo than these two
...I'm of course referring to Max and Killer Instinct
I'd actually love to see an episode on The Phantom Pain, though I'm not sure how much info is actually available about its development.
i hated crap like that in the arcades there were always punks like that in the arcades my arcades were always good about kicking people like that out when they were discovered ..there was a version of mk2 or 3 that if you beat someone in 2 player it counted for story mode and my bro was like 11 and had tons of people trying to stomp him cause he was a kid that he never fought the computer except for the end but i remember it got to the point where they gave the kids their own section with diff cabnients which had things like lowered difficulty and the like
“Double Helix”.

The fans made sure this game would not fail! And we will do so, Everytime it comes to Killer Instinct!

The KI Classic was the first figghting game i ever got interested in on my N64. Fucking LOVED it. Instantlly pre ordered this on my Xbox One. I was impressed with what they did honestlly and the fact that there was even amazing new characters like Hisako was great too. The combos are smoooooth af in this game
I just got this game and, I'm shocked to say this, I've had more fun with this than I did with Netherrealm's past titles for the last 6 years. I haven't had so much fun with a fighting game in SO LONG.
To the developers of this fantastic, no, ULTIMATE game, I bow my head and tip my hat. You truly have my respect, and I don't often give respect to most people.
I wish they would do another Killer Instinct game. We need it.
I'm so behind on this. I played this gem a little bit and it's well overdue for me to own this. Will be getting back to my KI roots this black Friday
One of the best shows on youtube. So much dedication and quality in this series.
One of the best fighting games ever made and its slept on
Im still amazed of how after surviving what could be a declared path for defeat. This game also brought us some characters we didnt expect in fighting games and delivered them so well. Yes Im talking about Rash, Arbiter and RAAM, maybe Rash was the closer to what we see in fighting games but still the team at Iron Galaxy knew how to introduce those dudes with fitting gameplay and they dont look out of place in KI.
i bought the definitive edition this last sunday, expecting nothing, and holy shit, what an amazing fighting game.
One of my favorite What Happened? episodes. KI is fucking amazing.

Maximilian is synonymous with killer instinct to me. I used to watch him all the time in 2013.
So essentially, it had rolled a Nat20 on everything other than the Dev change and longevity.
Also I learned recently from a documentary by hold back to block that the original KI made the Ultra combo and Combo Breaker sounds about 40% LOUDER than the sound volume level set in the test menu by the arcade operator. A very clever way of attracting attention. I just... LOVE goofy arcade stuff like this
7:44 Legit was arguing with someone on Yahtzee's Zero Punctuation list of most influencial games of 2010s how this model alone made KI worthy for that list. Someone argued back to me that this is not the case because "they never heard of the game" :/
For real. SFV totally crimped their model lol
