I unironically love Godzilla: Final Wars. It's not a "good" movie, but my god is it a fun watch. And as clearly inexperienced as Don Frye is as an actor, he is easily the most entertaining human character in it. I think it's better to view it less as a movie and more as a 50th birthday party for the big G. Edit: But yes, more Jet Jaguar is always the correct choice.
Final Wars rules. It's never boring, it's one of the Godzilla movies where the human storyline is just as interesting/insane as the kaiju storyline, Don Frye is endearing as hell, and we get a live action anime where commando mutant Goku and commando mutant Vegeta fight each other on motorcycles, and a alien guy who unironically names himself "X" and looks like he got lost on the way to a Matrix convention. It baffles me that there are people who don't like it.
When I introduced my friend to it, I clearly set it out for him. "This is a good movie. That does mean it is a quality movie. This movie is cheese. Oooey gooey cheese. Like, processed. With jalapenos. This movie is gas station nachos at 3am after a drinking bender."
The random use of Sum 41’s All to Blame was so insane that it’s beautiful. Loved Don Frye, his character was more interesting than our actual human protagonist who has those weird powers.
I was seriously yelling "FUCK YEAH!!! EPIC MOUSTACHE MAN!" by the end of the film whenever I saw him. I honestly am not sure I would have enjoyed him as much if it was a big name in the role.

I'd love to see a what happened for High Guardian Spice once we get more behind the scenes info on it because the massive gap between it being reportedly completed and it actually being released alone says a lot.
What happened was someone at Crunchyroll saw the series, came to their senses, and tried their best to prevent it from getting out. However because of the leadership shift, it released anyway, possibly because if they didn’t they’d face some kind of legal action. Or maybe it was to get some kind of tax break, I dunno.
I’d say more interesting what happed to Clone High years of nothing and potential season 2 we got it. But someone made a wish on that monkeys paw and the cost was the writing quality.
It’s been covered by a few videos. Basically, it’s Crunchyroll being incompetent as hell and incredibly cheap during production, then throwing the cast and crew under the bus and delaying the show while the heat died down.
@@GamerSlyRatchet1 I never bought that thing about the budget affecting things that much. Sure it would explain the questionable choices made in the show's aesthetics, but money can't make a bad foundation into a good script. @@GamerSlyRatchet1 Crunchyroll and Funimation being inconpetent is something we anime fans Latin America had to endure, though honestly CR didn't made that bad decisions aside from some weird translation choices they force upon their first Neutral Spanish dubs, Funimation was the one that had more misteps when they entered the Latin America market, though eventually Funi LatAm improved but when they merged with CR things actually got worse in some respects PS: it seems High Guardian Spice was suppossed to get dubbed into multiple languages like other CR Original shows like Onyx Equinox and Tonikawa did, but it seems CR cancelled all those plans. At least Tonikawa was a success
I still stand by that this is one of the best Godzilla movies ever made, at the very least my own personal top 5. Is it stupid, absolutely, but it’s probably one of the most fun movies I’ve ever seen. If nothing else, G-fans and movie watchers have to appreciate that this is the last Godzilla movie to feature suit-mation, AND new designs of these characters to boot. Toho and the director really tried to go all out with this movie, and you can tell both parties had fun making it.
Maaaaaaan i really loved final wars since i was a child, it's sad to see this movie to make the franchise go on longer hiatus in the history of the franchise
This is the best movie ever made I don't care what anyone says. I had so much non stop fun over its two hour runtime and couldn't believe how over the top it was.
the whole "there are two things you don't know about the earth" line used to be epic to my little kid brain, but seeing it in the video out of context had me laughing my ass off
Always nice to hear someone other than myself pop for Jet Jaguar. I know its considered a lesser entry in the pantheon of Godzilla movies, but I just friggin love Godzilla vs Megalon. It was my first G movie and my parents took me to the drive-in to see it when I was a boy (Yes, I'm old). Loved it then, love it now.
Don't feel bad. I'm a 51 year old nerd who still loves Godzilla, Transformers, D and D, video games, anime and comic books. Wouldn't change for the world either 👍
Vs Megalon is my favourite Godzilla movie and my third favourite film ever. I genuinely love it its so much fun, I would've loved to see it at a drive-in!
The animated series based on Zilla 98 should be looked at. The cartoon is a good demonstration that Zilla 98 could have worked well, if it wasn't handled by someone who didn't care.
It would have been funny. But since he does that to EVERY monster, it isn't very funny. That just means every other monster is on par with GINO. Which is just insulting on every level.
@@orga7777 Agree. If every other monster had at least gotten a semblance of back and forth, a quick three rounds, before going, then Zilla got zapped, THAT would be funny.
Its a pity it didn't do well. Its easily one of my favorite godzilla films of all time. It had a fairly quick pace to the plot, the human element wasn't a complete snoozefest, and seeing Godzilla tear through everything was fantastic. Could it have been better? Maybe, but frankly with the run time it had, it did well enough.
Say what you will, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Wasn’t my favorite Goji film of all time, but I’ve watched it repeatedly over the years and I love it BECAUSE of the insanity. That being said, thanks for the episode, man. There was some information in here to which I was not aware. Cheers.
I have the soundtrack to Howl’s Moving Castle. I needed it after several watches just to hear it! Great Stuff, as always! Animation is the best way to go, even Disney should drop the live action machine.
Love it or hate it, this is one Godzilla film I can put on and just love to watch. Big G fights or the Human action scenes. I anniversary film with a lot of memorable moments. Gigan's update was amazing af!
Loved this movie. Love 'em all! I grew up in the ghettos of NYC when I discovered this franchise as a kid. So, it was/is my childhood guilty pleasure. And I have ALL THE MOVIES on Blu-ray!
I have this movie saved in one of my external HDDs and I always planned to watch it someday. But since I've seen this video my interest grew on giving it a try. This one looks like it's Godzilla's own Avengers Infinity War/Endgame/No Way Home level of craziness. Great video!
The only issue I really have with Final Wars was how Gigan was treated. Bro came back after a 31 year absent sporting one of the most badass designs in the franchise and was marketed the most out of the other kaijus outside of Godzilla and Mothra in terms of merch. But in the movie, bro got decapitated not once, but twice, one of which by his own attacks. Ik FW would of been too long than it already is, but it’s such a shame considering he was the first kaiju in Godzilla’s rouge gallery to make the Big G draw blood on screen. Other than that, FW is basically like KOTM where if you’re in it for just the actions, you’ll have lots of fun with the film (casting Don Frye in the film was peak casting)
Gotta love that classic japanese politeness 😂 "I really wish the fight could have gone on longer, but we had to cut it for the sake of time and at least have a good laugh" Nahhh we all knew what ya did lol
I really loved Final Wars... Mostly because I love MMA and Godzilla. I think Don Frye worked perfectly in his role and I would gladly watch more Godzilla movies cast with Pride fighters (although a lot of them are getting up there in age now).
How about an episode on Rebuild of Evangelion? The original NGE already had a pretty infamous development hell thanks to Studio Gainax's short-sighted at best business decisions and the director's depression, but this saga also stressed out Hideaki Anno so much that he relapsed and worked on Shin Godzilla to calm down so there had to have happened a lot of things behind the scenes.
If you wanted to keep to a Godzilla theme, I recommend checking out the painful history of what could've been with Gojira - Kaijuu Daikessen, aka Godzilla Destroy All Monsters in the West(*), but literally translated as Godzilla - Monster Wars. Back in 1994, when Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II came out Toho licensed out 2 Godzilla games to be made for the SNES: Super Godzilla, a janky and awful RPG with the most confusing mechanics, and Gojira - Kaijuu Daikessen, a 2D tournament fighter akin to SF2 with some actual in-depth mechanics and awesome monster fighting. So, when the United States were only allowed to release one, guess which one they took? If you guessed that they decided to give us the jank-ass RPG and made the cool-as-shit fighting game Japan-only, you would be correct! What I find the most tragic, however, is that the game was advertised in an issue of Nintendo Power Magazine under the game Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters, and if you were a G-fan at the time and saw this you would be shitting your pants! Finally, after that weird chess-like game on NES, the Big G might be getting a good one! But as AVGN best put it: "Only in Japan, only in Japan..."
I love that no matter how hard times get, Godzilla always comes back. When the Showa movies were failing, he went back into hibernation until the glory of the Heisei era. When they went out with a glorious sendoff the millenium series came out and made a couple great films and some middling ones. Then we hit modern era with good american Godzilla and Shin Godzilla being absolutely incredible. Now we have Minus 1 to look forward to and an apple tv plus show about Godzilla with Kurt Russell. The King will never die
There's really two opposing polarities to Godzilla movies in general, either the slower-paced dread of the original film, or the slobberknocker levels of monster brawls like Destroy All Monsters. Most of the movies lie somewhere between the two extremes, balancing slower more horror-focused scenes with crowd-rousing monster fights. Final Wars is one of the most extreme examples of swinging way over to one end of that spectrum, focused entirely on fight scenes to the point of exhaustion. It feels more like a RUclips Supercut of fights taken from other movies than a movie in and of itself.
Oh gosh, I unironically love this movie. A peek behind the production curtain sounds like terrible fun. Side note: Most of IDW's Godzilla comics have been amazing, no matter which incarnation you love the most. 😁
Your work and Big Action Bill's are the absolute best when breaking down Goji film history, great job! I liked final wars but definitely thought it could've been better. I wonder what kind of script Ryuhei cooked up originally?
I enjoyed Godzilla: Final Wars a lot. Godzilla’s design is one of my favorite designs of the character, the monster fights were also quite fun in my opinion, especially the quick fight between Godzilla and Zilla. Fun fact: Patrick Tatopoulis, who designed Godzilla for the Tristar adaptation was thrilled to see the version of Godzilla he created in a Toho Godzilla movie.
Final Wars may have been a bust financially but it fell so Godzilla 2014 could run and bring us where we are today: where Godzilla is once again so successful we even got the Godzilla VS King Kong remake no one (not even James Rolfe) thought would actually happen! Nothing can keep the King of the Monsters down forever! Nothing!

They had everything wrong right from the beginning and just stuck with it because their hubris wouldn't allow them to accept things with the script were very very wrong.
@@GamerSlyRatchet1 Crunchyroll and Funimation being inconpetent is something we anime fans Latin America had to endure, though honestly CR didn't made that bad decisions aside from some weird translation choices they force upon their first Neutral Spanish dubs, Funimation was the one that had more misteps when they entered the Latin America market, though eventually Funi LatAm improved but when they merged with CR things actually got worse in some respects
PS: it seems High Guardian Spice was suppossed to get dubbed into multiple languages like other CR Original shows like Onyx Equinox and Tonikawa did, but it seems CR cancelled all those plans. At least Tonikawa was a success
It's just not Saturday morning without ya, Matt.
Maaaaaaan i really loved final wars since i was a child, it's sad to see this movie to make the franchise go on longer hiatus in the history of the franchise
one of my all time fav godzilla movies
Final Wars was the movie that brought me into the tokusatsu genre. I love this movie for how stupidly fun this is.
I liked Final Wars for it's over the top goofiness. The scene when Godzilla obliterated Zilla was so good!
Godzilla has his own star on the Walk of Fame? That's so cute!
This is the best movie ever made I don't care what anyone says. I had so much non stop fun over its two hour runtime and couldn't believe how over the top it was.
I know Final Wars wasn’t the best, but it was the first Godzilla film I saw. It still holds a special place in my heart.
I love that they were against putting in Jet Jaguar because of a tonal clash but were perfectly fine with shoving in King Caesar and fucking Minilla
the whole "there are two things you don't know about the earth" line used to be epic to my little kid brain, but seeing it in the video out of context had me laughing my ass off
It sounds so awkward haha
"...and Godzillas dumb ass son" spoken like a true goji fan lolol
Godzilla Final Wars is so sick. Sometimes I feel like it’s my favorite in the whole franchise. Thanks for the episode! Made my day!
The animated series based on Zilla 98 should be looked at. The cartoon is a good demonstration that Zilla 98 could have worked well, if it wasn't handled by someone who didn't care.
Having Godzilla curb stomp Zilla in seconds flat in this movie = priceless!
It would have been funny. But since he does that to EVERY monster, it isn't very funny. That just means every other monster is on par with GINO. Which is just insulting on every level.
@@orga7777
Agree.
If every other monster had at least gotten a semblance of back and forth, a quick three rounds, before going, then Zilla got zapped, THAT would be funny.
$20 mil in the face of today's movies breaching $200 mil sounds so... quaint.
Cheers.
Honestly, this is my favorite Godzilla film. I love the early 2000’s metal vibe, sum 41 and Gigan being my favorite kaiju definitely helps.
Excellent job Matt!
Loved this movie. Love 'em all! I grew up in the ghettos of NYC when I discovered this franchise as a kid. So, it was/is my childhood guilty pleasure. And I have ALL THE MOVIES on Blu-ray!
I remember watching this as a kid! It made me love Gigan, it didn’t have too much screen time, but it looked so badass
Man, what I wouldn't give for Shinkawa's design to be made on screen, even if it was some evil Godzilla clone or something
I have this movie saved in one of my external HDDs and I always planned to watch it someday. But since I've seen this video my interest grew on giving it a try. This one looks like it's Godzilla's own Avengers Infinity War/Endgame/No Way Home level of craziness. Great video!
19:28 “crawls into fetal position just thinking about the Godzilla Earth trilogy from Polygon Pictures”
Please be good Gamera Rebirth.
MASTERPIECE
Love seeing Godzilla get so much attention lately
Gotta love that classic japanese politeness 😂
"I really wish the fight could have gone on longer, but we had to cut it for the sake of time and at least have a good laugh"
Nahhh we all knew what ya did lol
You rock Matt!! This really means a lot and you said such nice things about the book!
Amazing video my man
its my favorite Godzilla movie honestly
Just watched it Saturday. It was stupid fun
Godzilla Final Wars was so much fun. I loved it and still do. Felt like a celebration crossed with a screw it let’s go all out insane attitude.
I really loved Final Wars... Mostly because I love MMA and Godzilla. I think Don Frye worked perfectly in his role and I would gladly watch more Godzilla movies cast with Pride fighters (although a lot of them are getting up there in age now).
This is actually one of my favorites
So glad the final wars suit got used for a short film against Gigan and Hedorah recently.
As a kid I fucking loved Final Wars.
10:00 god damn that looks like Godzilla & Super Shredder fused together
Really good video, final wars may have mixed reactions but I personally have a lot of fun with the film its ridiculous in an epic over the top way.
I literally grew up watching Tokyo SOS and Final Wars so I'm more than excited to see this video
I did not expect a Miami Vice clip in a video about Godzilla Final Wars
Oh gosh, I unironically love this movie. A peek behind the production curtain sounds like terrible fun.
Side note: Most of IDW's Godzilla comics have been amazing, no matter which incarnation you love the most. 😁
It took me a long time, but I've grown to love this movie over the years.
Your work and Big Action Bill's are the absolute best when breaking down Goji film history, great job! I liked final wars but definitely thought it could've been better. I wonder what kind of script Ryuhei cooked up originally?
Final Wars is the (Wrestling) Battle Royale of Godzilla, and lord knows I loved it!
Funny thing. In the Spanish Godzilla fandom. Final wars Spanish dub was recover like 3 days ago. What a coincidence
I actually like to see one of the Heisei Gamera Trilogy because i always wondered how they managed to make Gamera better than Godzilla at the time.
Never knew that this movie was looked down on. I had loved this movie, it is in my top favorite Godzilla movies.
This is still my favorite Godzilla movie. Fun, Action heavy, and most importantly a easy story.
Godzilla Final Wars is one of my favorite things of all time.
I... can't help but adore this movie. I know it's absurd, but I love it in all it's absurdity
Nothing!
This movie is objectively silly and ridiculous… and that’s why I enjoyed it so much
I have been looking forward to this. One of my favorite RUclipsrs discussing my favorite Godzilla film from when I was a kid.
Your avatar is so cute. Looks so soft and huggable. Especially the spiderman variant
Imagine a directors cut of this if they did save all the footage.
Absolutely loved how balls out crazy that movie was. Way more entertaining than any of the other Millennium movies .
I agree
I don’t care what people say about this movie this is the Godzilla movie that made me into a Godzilla fan
ONE OF DA GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME
Imagine a monsterverse version of this movie lol
Glad this show is back.
It didnt go anywhere.
