In this video, we will talk about 16 surprising ways you could be hurting your cat's feelings.
Teasing
Pulling on your cat’s tail, blowing in their face, scaring them during a deep sleep, and cornering and picking them up against their will -such behaviors confuse and agitate your cat. Remember, what’s amusing to you is not always fun for your cat. One of the basic needs a cat has is to feel safe and secure in your home.
Neglecting them
Offering your cat no attention, no affection, no interaction, no conversation, and no playtime can leave your pet depressed.
Many people assume that cats are not social animals, but that is far from the truth. Cats benefit from interaction and affection from their human.
Calling them for something they don’t like
Cats get excited when you call them because they expect treats or rewards. When you call your pet when something unpleasant is about to happen, like being forced into a carrier to go to a vet, it can hurt their feelings.
Disturbing them while eating
It’s natural for cats to be on high alert if there is a lot of noise and activity around them during dinnertime. A loud and busy location may cause stress and keep cats from eating or force them to eat too quickly.
A calm and quiet space allows cats to chow down in peace.
Punishing them
Punishing cats does inform your pet that you are angry, but they’ll have no idea why. Fear will often make a cat’s behavior worse rather than better. Anger does not teach your cat to “behave,” it simply teaches them to be afraid of you.
A dirty litter box
Cats are very clean animals and they devote a large portion of their day towards self-grooming.
Cleaning your cat’s litter box every day will make for a happy cat.
Pushing them away
Cats are curious about their environment. This means your cat might be getting in the way of something, so you might feel compelled to push them away. Before you do, consider if you would like it if someone pushed you away just for wanting to be a part of something that interested you.
Instead of pushing your cat away, try gently redirecting them somewhere else.
Not Providing Mental Stimulation
A bored cat means a sad cat. Humans can do a lot of different things with their lives, but your cat is limited to the environment you provide them with. This means that it’s up to you to offer your cat things to do.
Cats need plenty of mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy.
And remember, it's best to adopt two cats at the same time. The two cats will grow together and feel less lonely.
Shouting
Raised voices will terrify your cat. Feline ears are extra sensitive to loud and high-pitched noises. They can perceive the person making these noises as a threat, and will begin to avoid them.
Skipping the small stuff
Never grooming your cat. Ignoring frequent hairballs, which can signal a digestive issue. Allowing their nails to grow too long that they snag them around the house. These are things that can harm your cat’s well-being. Remember, your cat is a living being that have basic needs to stay happy and healthy.
Ignoring their fears
Cats have a good reason for jumping and hiding whenever they hear a loud or startling sound. Our feline friends can hear sounds around 1.6 octaves higher than humans.
Common sounds such as the vacuum cleaner, videogames, fireworks, balloons, or loud TV cause stress and anxiety in cats. Make sure you are providing your cat with a calm, relaxed environment.
Forcing New Friendships
Most cats are reserved around strangers.
When you force your cat to interact with new people, you’re essentially disrespecting their feelings.
It’s always best to let your cat make new friends on their own. Don’t force them to interact.
Leaving old food out
Food that has gone bad is no better for your cat than it is for you. It can result in illnesses like food poisoning. Moreover, cats appreciate being served fresh food.
It could be part of their finicky personalities, or it could stem from an ancient instinct that protected their ancestors from eating rancid meat. Either way, cats feel appreciated and understood when their families respect their desire for fresh food.
Ignoring their pain
Cats don’t speak human language so it's often up to pet owners to decipher clues about their cat's condition based on physical and behavioral changes.
Whether because an infected tooth makes eating difficult or a urinary tract infection makes litter box visits painful, it is up to us to recognize the subtle signs and give them the help they need.
Declawing them
Declawing is torturous to cats. It would be akin to cutting off our fingers at the last knuckle, leading to pain and mobility issues.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, because scratching is an innate cat behavior, declawed cats can suffer from emotional stress when they cannot scratch.

If you've been doing most of these things, then don't worry. The good thing is that you've made some discoveries that can help you to be a better fur parent to your kitty. I love my cats to a ridiculous degree, and I think that the main thing is to give them the same kind of respect you would a human child when it comes to matters of attention and love. One of the biggest things is enforcing the fact that your home is also your cat's home. Some people think I'm extreme, but I will never yeet my pets from a chair or couch because Karen wants to sit there. I would also never banish them to a locked bedroom or bathroom because little Suzie is afraid of them or whatever. Before a new visitor comes, I let them know in advance I have cats, and that they HAVE to be nice to them if they want to visit. If they don't like cats or are allergic, then I apologize, but my house probably isn't a place you want to visit. We can hang, but let's do it at "xxxx's house".

Tickling activates the fight or flight response in humans. We may enjoy the act but our body doesn't. Your cat is making sure you're not actively hurting your son.

The cat is protecting his tribe member
That makes a lot of sense because good cat parents+fam will stop or pause any kitten play that makes a kitten squeak or scream, so they learn to play more gently.

I will never understand why people want to hurt animals
I think it has to do with some kind of anger, power, aggression, or a screw loose in the brain. I wondered about this too. Serial killers have said it gives them some kind of thrill to harm a small creature -- almost like a drug or something. It's sad but it does happen and there is nothing we can do but be aware there are people like this.
My Brother and my Brothers Girlfriend emotionally hurt my Cats, always shouting at them telling them they'll slit there throat, Never give them attention or Lovings. Just abandoned them really ( Just because they prefer Dogs ) They're Huge dog people and give all the attention to the Dog

Declawing is illegal in Germany and it baffles me that it's not illegal in the US. If you want a clawless cat, don't get a cat. As for the rest, I'd almost always recommend getting two cats, not only if you're in a small flat. Feline companionship and interaction is simply something a human cannot provide. I'm happy to say that I have two very happy cats, even though I have to get out the vacuum cleaner now and then (which one of my cats absolutely hates). Many of these things should be obvious, but apparently, they aren't - so it's good to put this out there and educate people...
Just saying I don't need a law, just don't know how anyone does that to a cat, vacuuming they don't like lol I can let mine go outside, as i live out in country, I have two they are great friends to each other and me .
I rescue cats and absolutely agree with you about having two cats. When I’m trying to re-home kittens and people say to me “oh I can’t , I’ve already got a cat” I feel so sorry for that cat. I always encourage people to consider taking 2 even to the point I don’t charge them anything (obviously as long as I feel confident they’re going to good homes) plus it also helps having your brother or sister with you while settling into a new environment. Imagine sitting all day by yourself in a lonely, noiseless house or apartment, I actually think it’s cruel. Oh and don’t get me started on the barbaric act of de-clawing 🤬.

There's a lot of push in the US right now to outlaw declawing and I do believe it's been banned in certain cities and areas but nothing state or countrywide as of yet. I actually just watched a really good video the other day that was talking about declawing specifically. And it's actually been made illegal in many countries already!
I can’t imagine ignoring my cats or shoving them aside I have two and I love holding them, cuddling them, kissing them, meowing back at them, playing with toys with them, and letting them sleep close to me on the bed! They’re my little buddies and make me so happy.
I love my kitty to bits, but when she jumps up on my desk and lays on top my keyboard for the tenth time after I’ve continued to gently place her on the ground…. I can see why someone might be tempted to just push them off. Usually at that point though I just carry her out and shut the door. (Commencing an hour of crying and pawing the door because she has some bad separation anxiety 😢)

Sure, I feed her 4 times every day and give her load of pets and scratches, but other than that, she doesn't need much. She's self sufficient.
@@marissalalor541 She always feels safe around me. And as for the vet, she's extremely healthy, so I only need to bring her in for check-ups maybe once a month... unless she gets sick.
@@marissalalor541 Feeding her is no problem at all After I give her the usual food in her bowl, she preys on the local rodent population. She's even brought back a few squirrels, which I have punished her for. I like squirrels, and hate to see them killed.

Cats are amazing and people who genuinely love their cats tend to be empathetic people. Gaining love from a cat is very validating that you're a pretty decent person

We have 2 senior cats who will pass soon because of CRF & heart trouble. We also have one youngster with IBD. We've already lost so many of our beloved cats in old age and as relative youngsters that I remind myself and my spouse that one day - maybe soon - we'll miss their clingy shenanigans. I treasure EVERY moment with them now! I never want to have regrets. 🦋😻🦋

I have two black rescue cats. My prince had a hard start and it's amazing how small things like regularly cleaning their litter box, noticing what food they like and don't like, even letting people know not to do things such as picking up my prince because he doesn't like it or bringing princess to the vet with my prince to keep him calm gives so much reward. Both of mine follow me everywhere and show me so much love. I was always a dog person but having my two rescue babies has really made my life a rewarding and happy one. I love my two babies and it makes my day to see them in the window waiting when I get home. Love your cats and they do love you back

Declawing should actually be illegal. Not sure how any human with feelings would even conduct such a procedure and still live with themselves. My cat scratched my couches before, so I just got tight fitting covers to protect the couches. He scratched my TV, so I got a TV screen protector and placed another scratching post near the TV, so he'd go for that instead. Declawing is never the solution.
Edit: I live in the US, where the procedure is still legal in the vast majority of states. I'm aware that it can be necessary in the case of an infected nail bed or other medical condition, but that's a very particular exception.
Declawing is in fact illegal in many countries like most of Europe or Australia. If you're afraid of/annoyed by cat scratches, just don't get a cat, it's simple.
agreed, the only time I would EVER declaw is if it was necessary for the health of the cat - like an infection or something. I've met some declawed cats and it just breaks my heart to see it.

@@_private_ really? I just read on Wikipedia that it’s illegal everywhere except Ontario. It was updated 21 days ago so unless your province enforced this 3 weeks ago, it’s not banned. It may be just not practiced in vet clinics but the law has not reached Ontario yet unfortunately.

I just recently got a kitten and after 5 days I realized I just couldn’t provide it with certain things that another cat could so I went back to the breeder and got one of its siblings. Best decision I ever could’ve made for that kitten. Now they are growing together happily

that’s so cute! some cats really need attention. i had a kitty who wasn’t into socializing so we kept it only one but there was another cat i wanted to adopt (he was a stray cat but he was well looked after. in turkey it’s common) i realized he never leaves the side of his sibling and other “friends” even though i love him so much and i don’t wanna leave him behind while leaving my city, i decided to not adopt him. he has a social life in our neighborhood and i don’t want to make him a lonely, deppressed cat
I loved my baby more than anything in my life for his entire 16.5 years. We were truly connected. But I am sure I hurt his feelings more than once. If only I could re-do those 16.5 years.

@@TheKittyCatnip I do have the BEST memories of my 16.5 years with him. He chose me when he was 3 months old, and we had a deep connection that is so difficult to capture with mere words. He was the best thing to ever happen to me, and I told him that.

My cat had a bad biting problem when she was a kitten. I think she might have been mistreated/traumatized and reacted negatively when hands were coming straight toward her head. She would legit bite, not just play bite. I took to approaching my hand from behind or from the side to pet her, and she responded positively. When I did get bit, I would make a cat-like yowl and just look right at her and she'd quit biting. Then I'd give her some space after. She hardly bites anymore and is way more trusting. When she does occasionally bite, it's way less aggressively. I still yowl when I'm bit, but it rarely happens and she gets this cute "I'm sorry," look on her face. At least she stopped drawing blood. I shudder to think how her life would've been if she'd been adopted by someone less patient and understanding. It's not always the animals fault, and if you can help them discontinue the bad behavior, their lives will be better. I get snuggles and headbutts from her all the time and she really likes being in the same room with people, though not always close by them.
"might have been mistreated/traumatized" this can mean all sorts of things... when in reality such trauma can stem from even being rescued... many things come into play when cats are growing into their personalities. Absolutely abusive trauma can effect their personalities but many scenarios can develop "personality defects" in kittens... even in the actual act of catching them from the wild can turn them into very fearful animals. I saved this one kitten a few weeks too late, whose eyes were infected shut and he was certainly going to die outside... he was still in his "nest". He had the cat flu and smelled horrible and had all the black crust stuff on him... he needed some meds and shots to deal with it. i only ever held him and cuddled him but he never really wants to be petted or held... now when you get him and hold him for a little bit while you can feel the tenseness in his body eventually he starts to purr and he really has a strong purr. but then sprints away when you let go... it seems he never really understands that i just want to help him. and he is about 7 months old now.. i take him outside and he starts to moan meow he is horrible terrified of the outside... so i have to keep him inside the house and pretty much just let him be hiself... His brother has none of those issues he is actually a contender for one of the best cats ive ever had... he seems very smart and very cuddly while he does dart from the family sometimes he is still a very well behaved cat... my point is, its not always some sort of abuse that causes cats to be super skiddish or do certain behaviors...rather in general its in them from birth and a lot of it has to do with their intelligence...
having several feral cats outside ive seen many personalities in feral cats while they are all scared at some point the smarter cats warm up quicker when they realize you have food for them and mean them no harm... The really really smart cats eventually let you pet them. I have one of those that i am getting within 2 feet of now and he is a talker his name is winnie the meow.
@@acrock21 Yea I suspect my cat got her hand issues from being rescued more than mistreated, but I don't know for sure that she was a feral rescue.
I don't really think it's fair to say smart cats let humans pet them since in the wild it's pretty smart to not let something huge get near you. But I think it comes down to what you said, it's really just about the individual cat in question.
@@kirkistief I was kinda referring to in my situation... where several cats are being fed by a human or humans... you can really see the more intellegent cats and how they start to communicate... fair really has nothing to do with it. its one of those cut and dry things... humans are the same way. some are dumb as rocks with no sense and some are extremely sharp. theres also different kinds of intelligence.
I have no basis to say what happened to your cat because theres no way i could ever know, i was just making suggestions. my baby scratches me all the time he is way more hyped up shes always been an extra level of crazy... she can be all cuddly and then zoomy in a second. shes so soft and cute though... usually if i dont give her as many treats as she wants she will scratch me and throw my stuff on the floor... kinda silly.
I usually put my cats face in their own dumps and then throw it across the room into the cabinet. It's the only way it learns it's doing something wrong. It's lucky i dont kick its face in.
From videos once watched, is possible that she was not raised with an adult cat (make our female) who taught boundaries to the cat as a kitten. The adult cat stops the kitten when buying to hard or playing too ruff. Several videos show this behavior. Or you can watch a mother cat hold down a rambunctious kitten when it is a little or of control. This showing that kittens are best raised with an adult cat when possible. Maybe the abuse was just taking it away from a nurturing feline environment.

Cats ARE very sensitive beings. I'm so fortunate to be visited every night by a beautiful cat from across the street. Peach (that's his name) comes to visit me solely to interact with me and lay on my tummy for a long while. He makes me infinitely happy; and he knows it. That's why he does it. 🥰🐈

And be aware that since Peach has _chosen_ *you* he thinks you are pretty darn special and incredible too! 😻😸😃 Reminds me of when I lived in my old neighborhood, we had neighbors that had a peachy-colored cat (just beautiful too! A boy...) and I just called him "Peaches" because I didn't know his name. He was so friendly with me; and I'd always find him outside sitting under my cherry tree! I always made time for "Peaches" and I still think about him to this very day! Of course, I had my _own_ cats then as well (I've always owned cats; well, they've owned ME; you know how that goes! 😅) but it didn't matter. I still love(d) Peaches ,too. He was very special to me; and we had special times, together. I didn't think his owners _mistreated_ him; but he was an outdoor cat; and I just enjoyed our time together. I think of him often...he will always be a part of my heart. 😻❤

My kitten is named Peach as well! He's a very playful baby and spends a good chunk of his day playing with other cats in the back yard. Then he comes home at night and cuddles with me
I love how they kept some of their coolest primal instincts even after being domesticated for so long. Little things like drinking running water go all the way back to when they drank water from water running down mountains. This may not be true but it's an observation of why many cats like water that flows down. Some downright hate drinking water directly from a still bowl, especially after you spoil them 😭😭
I had a cat who would only drink from the sink, he was very picky about it. I've since lost him from the negligence of one of my neighbors and using D-Con poisoning. I would give anything to be able to turn the water on for him again.
Me and my gf just rescued a stray cat and we know how to love an animal and the basics of taking care of a cat but since we havnt had a cat before and our cat isn’t used to living in an apartment with people in it these videos have helped us understand the little things about cats that can go unnoticed. We got her litter box trained in only a few days and we all have come a long way in just about a week. These vids have helped a whole lot

Cats are such amazing companions. If your good to them they'll feel safe around you and you'll realise how social and kind they are. It's all about respecting their boundaries as you should do with any other pet or person.

I adopted a senior kitty who had been declawed before she came to us. She definitely has some behavioral quirks that I think are directely connected to it, including biting. She doesn't mean anything by it, she's not being aggressive. I just think she has residual pain that she doesn't know how to deal with.

Yes! I like to joke that I'm big on consent, and that it applies to pets as well as people. I hate it when people force their pets to hold still for pets-especially for small children. FOr one thing, it sets a bad example for the child, and leads them to think that they can grab kitty whenever they want, which can be highly dangerous. Secondly, it takes away kitty's right to say no, which is also wrong and can harm your relationship with kitty. Dog, cat or human-please always get permission before any kind of touching takes place.

@@michaelschneider497 Cats don't understand punishment, so its best to instead redirect them. For example, if they bite/scratch your hands during play, kindly but firmly tell them no, take your hands away, and give them a toy instead. I've had cats my entire life and this method pretty much always works with time & consistency. Note that a well adjusted cat also often settles down with age! Young cats have a lot of energy and are very reactive so they're prone to misbehavior, but as they grow up they calm down a lot :) hope this helps!

I like how this is telling us what not to do but not telling us how to fix it. Some of those things are common sense but other things we actually need help with. Like how do I get them to stop doing things that I don't want them to do It would have been nice to have a solution
I one day came to a breaking point that why my cats hate me so much and after thinking I came to this conclusion that I’m really hurting their feelings and emotions. I changed myself quickly and less that one week they forgive me. I started to hang out with them more in any form and didn’t let it end with any bad simulation even a loud laugh.
Understanding and developing a close bond with a cat is an accomplishment imo. Takes work and empathy.

Back when I was in high school my cat used to love sleeping in carton boxes so we always had one in the house for him to nap in. We thought it was pretty cute. A friend of mine visited and decided that flipping the box and closing it with the cat inside was hilarious… my cat never wanted to sleep in a carton box again and I was very upset about it. Said friend had a cat too, but one day he said his cat had ran away. I’m not surprised…

Cats certainly pick their owners! They’re independent when they need to be which is one of the qualities I admire and adore them for.
It's also an individual cat thing. Like I have 3 cats. One is playful and actually loves it when I play with him by putting a box over him as he sits. Cat no 2 hates it, so I'd never do that with him. Cat no 3 is indifferent, so she would just continue to sleep with the box flipped over her.

Thanks for mentioning declawing. I adopted a declawed kitty. She was an absolute emotional mess whenI got her. It took me years of special care, and rreatment before she became a happy cat.... it gave me great satisfaction to see her become confident.

If you have an inside-only cat, or you spend alot of time away from home for work etc, then i honestly think adopting 2 cats instead of 1 is the absolute number one thing you can do to improve their mental health. Cats need mental stimulation, and having a buddy they can play with, nap with and snuggle up to is just the absolute best thing for a cat that isn't allowed outside or is left home alone for most of the day.

I can definately agree on the pushing away thing. Mine used to climb all over me and kneed me at night with her claws. Instead if tossing her off, I would put my hand on her paws to show her the kneading wasn't appreciated while i was sleeping and would nudge her to a more convenient place. She now climbs up and snuggles against me and may knead the blanket shortly and then relaxes and goes to sleep, sometimes after a few pets. She now sleeps with me nearly every night and we do not disturb one another.

@@williamhoskin5703 Look, I was been used to live with dogs, never had cats in my whole life and finding myself in the same home with creatures that behave in a totally different way than dogs, has ben not easy to accept. When you say dogs: "Don't do this" several times the dog at some point respect you and start not doing it anymore. With cat it seems doesn't work like that, they kep doing over and over the things they are not supposed to do, like a neighbor that use to listen to loud music and even if you tell them to stop, they keep disrespecting you over and over. It's hard for me to accept it and living with creatures that disrespect you on daily bases, keep doing what you told them to not do. At the end the damages made by the cats are not so huge and the little one is actually not destroying anything (I don't know if it's happening because I changed my behavior toward them or because the older cat is a bit bully). I don't my girlfriend being upset because how I deal with the cats, and the cats hating me and fir this reason this last period I changed my behavior. They are not dogs and they behave differently. It's absurd that I have roommates (the cats), that are so disrespectful and do whatever they want not understanding that this upset me (like dogs do), but what can I do? They are not gonna change, it seems that humans did a really bad job with cats during all these hundred of years and now I'm paying the consequences of what cat owners did. It's frustrating, very frustrating but I can't be at war with the cats all their life. At least now they jump on my legs they purr and rub their head toward me. If frustration is the price I have to pay to be in harmony with everyone, let's be like that. I was used to take some shit outside the home, but not even my home is a safe place now. I foster cats and thus they only stay for a couple of months. I donot know what they were used to being allowed but I can and have taught each one that I don't want them on the kitchen counter. It takes time but mostly being very persistent .
I really enjoyed this video. I have two fur babies and I actually feel quite ashamed because I have done some of these things that was on the list. I love my cats and they help me when I’m depressed. In the past, I have yelled at my cats (only occasionally and usually when I was trying to sleep during the day after a long night shift) and definitely always regretted it. Luckily, my cats (at that time, years ago) seemed very forgiving and didn't hold it against me. Now, I'm not working nights anymore and am not exhausted all the time, so I feel pretty good about how I am with them - especially since my two rescue cats I have now sleep with me at night and get in my lap. They also just have very comfortable body language. They are very intelligent and sensitive beings and I don't think many of us are perfect, even with good intentions. The only thing I'm bad at is playing with them. They do have toys and cat trees and get walks outside (in a stroller) though. ❤
I'm guilty of yelling at my kitten, when I brought her home, She was a little hellian, knocking over all my valuables, but I moved them up high away from her reach, but she's calmed down quite a bit since then, Thank God!!! I love her sooo much and now we are closer,

@@jazzmarie3690 I similarly give one of my cats a "time out". I have two males, who I adore and they occasionally fight - REAL fighting, not play fighting. So, I will calmly pick up the one that I think is the instigator and give him about a 15 minute time out in another room. I don't yell at them to stop (ineffective) - I have snapped my fingers at them (also ineffective) - the time outs seem to really work. It just gives them both a few minutes to just calm down. I've tried just standing in between them and trying to kind of move one cat away from the other (not in a disciplinary way at all) - but it doesn't work for them.
This made me sad. Gotta go and pet my cats now to make sure they know I love them 😩

Me and my cat are ok, she’s older than me, she’s lost her friends due to them being stray cats before and having an illness, but she is comfortable and happy laying on top of me right now.
Whether you decide to provide a home to a pet or a human child. If you don’t find JOY in loving, understanding, and takin care of them even when u are exhausted then it’s probably not for you. No matter how tired I am or if I had a rough day it is made better by loving and takin care of my cat. Cleaning her dishes, portioning out her food just like she likes, cleaning her litter box, playing w her, or just cuddling on the couch.

I usually put my cats face in their own dumps and then throw it across the room into the cabinet. It's the only way it learns it's doing something wrong. It's lucky i dont kick its face in.

I've had cats in the past with different temperaments and considered and had second thoughts.. Love cats, they're great company but they're work and they can tear stuff up It's all I can do to care of myself these days.🙏🙏

Too often people get puppies and kittens without teaching their children what is required and what is unacceptable.
I go out of my way every day to make sure that my girl is happy. Morning play and treats, breakfast and snuggles. Sadly i must leave the house for work but I can't wait to come home to her greeting me at the door for more play and fun and brushes. We have a solid bond and we are the best of buddies.

I could never imagine doing any of these to my cats. I have a very skittish one, and the best thing for me to do is just talk to her, to avoid startling her. I kind of explain what I'm doing, and that's it's got nothing to do with her, she's okay right there, and I just give her space. If I just came in the room and started moving stuff around, she'd hiss and bolt. I always feel so bad if I accidentally startle her.
Another thing I'd add to this list is, might fall under "teasing" but more specifically, don't hold a cat against it's will. When my daughter was little, she would love to "hug" the cats when they obviously wanted down. She'd say "I'm not hurting him" and I'd tell her she was hurting him emotionally.
Dressing them up in costumes or baby clothes can be super stressful too. Though I do like to put those little velcro baby hair-bows on my long-haired's head, but he loves the attention LOL

I'm really worried about leaving my mother alone with the cats, she treats them the way she treated me and my sister as kids, one is a perfect angel and the other is rotten in her opinion and sometimes it flips, she yells at them and even pushes them around with the broom and tends to take out anger or frustration on them, it sucks but people who abuse children might also abuse their pets.
My mum got herself another dog... I don't dare imagine when he annoys her how she treats her, she can be evil :(((

I think it also depends on the cat’s personality & how deep the bond is between you and your cat. Like my orange male cat is naturally friendly and playful, and we are deeply connected. Whenever he messes up (break/trying to break something, for example), he expects me to shout😂 because the first thing he does is to look at me to see my reaction. And I normally shout at him. He will immediately apologize by showing me his soft belly and acting cute. He knows how to use his charm to manipulate his human 😂😂
This was a great list! I'm guilty of not playing with them enough, because I suffer from chronic pain and am generally pretty low energy. But I provide toys, scratching posts, window shelves to watch outside, they have each other, and I interact with them by petting, brushing, and letting them go for supervised walks outside. So maybe I'm not so bad... 😟

hey when my cat got older and couldn't really play with toys one thing he loved was sitting in front of my computer and playing cat games (he esp liked that mouse one where a mouse runs up and down like in a computer game) and batting at it. My poor computer screen. If I stopped it he would look behind the computer to see if it went there, it was so fun to watch him!
I recommend you to buy a laser toy. You don't need to move and your cat will be very entertained!
My son has autism and is very loud, also likes to play his iPad loud. Our cat absolutely adores being closed in the room with him he sleeps in the room while my son is running and stimming loudly. They’re quite the pair honestly 😂😂😂

Even if being with your son is worth it to the cat, it probably wouldn’t be a bad thing to try to limit loud noises to the extent possible. Cats don’t understand they can have long-term hearing loss.

He knows there is something different about him & knows how to handle him accordingly. He’s very gentle compared to me. He bites me, playfully attacks me feet and with my son he never does any of that. He sticks very close to him, it’s likely if you see my son you’ll also see our cat very close. If my son shuts the door my cat will meow loudly to be let in. I’ve worried what it would be like for a cat with an autistic child but I feel that my cat is just happy to have a home and love. I’d recommend a cat fountain for fresh water. They are super easy to maintain and are so much better than just a bowl of still water. Cats prefer moving water.
Yeah. Definitely. I bought one of those plastic round fountains and had to modify it a little bit so the water would land in a different spot. He used it for a while but he doesn't bother with it anymore and he doesn't like to drink from a bowl.
I was only using filtered water in the fountain and once in awhile he tries to drink from the faucet but I'd much rather he drink filtered water.
Looking into a different kind of fountain that looks more natural... Maybe the fountain stream has to be higher up. He had to crouch down a little bit for the water. Maybe it bothered him. I'm not sure at this point.
Luckily we only feed him wet food.
I tried and she didn't like it, even though we would clean it regularly. She just prefers her bowl. I think a nonplastic fountain would be better.

I try very hard not to hurt my babies feelings. I have one cat that is insistent on licking my nose and then chewing on it. I hate it, but I know what he is saying is I love you, so I accept it and let them do it. Over and over again I’ve been told the cats do not meow except of people. Yet they have many vocalizations. I’ve heard them meow to each other. True very seldom they do vocalize. The one that I love the most and makes me the happiest is when I hear one of my cats singing as she moves through the House. If you never heard your cat sing, I’m not surprised. I have one cat in particular who is a big singer. She was never socialized as a kitten. I respect her as she is. She loves being with me and around me. She does not mind being scratched on her face and cheeks, just a little. She lets me pick her up at different times when it is in her best interest, then she wants down as soon as things are clear. This is just the way she is and her personality. She likes playing with my hands. What normally would be considered attacking, but she does it with no claws and gentleness. When she gets excited the tips of her claws do come out. I withdraw. That is what cats do when somethings going on that they don’t like, they withdraw. No anger, I just stop the game. I have to be careful to always move slowly and gently. She responds and kind. I do not believe I’m hurting her feelings because she seems to understand that she was getting rough.
My cat sings like he’s an opera star when I’m getting his food ready. He’s usually very quiet. Sometimes I laugh at him, and it takes longer.
We'd never had cats in our household before. I had met and pet-sat for plenty of them, so I understood their needs to a degree. A stray had 2 kittens on our porch. My mom fell in love with all 3. One of her initial questions was if we should declaw them. After I explained that it's unhealthy and painful, she agreed not to. As a first time cat owner, she just didn't know better. She only needed the knowledge that it's not good for them to decide against it. We did get them all fixed though. No more surprise kittens.
To avoid hurting my kitty’s feelings, I would pick him up, kiss him, & gently put him down & pet him when I was busy doing something else.
Mine is leashed trained and likes meeting the little dogs he sees when we're out but I always tell the dog owner to let the cat come to the dog. The dog owner seems to appreciate that it creates an instantly controlled situation and then the two animals can decide how close they will get and how soon. He has lots of dog friends now and both tug on their leashes to see each other when they're out. it's adorable.

He owns every toy at Petsmart, speak softly to them, comfort them in storms, be there for them if there are fireworks, do not keep their water near their food, do not keep food or water near their litter, who wants to eat near their toilets, eww! Think about these things your cats has feelings, so do you just stop to think, would I like this before you do it? Just think first, your cat will love you for it!

I have a declawed Siamese cat.. it was not my choice to have him declawed as that was how I adopted him. It saddens me because he still goes to scratch on stuff or to try and jump up high but sometimes he can’t because he can’t grab onto anything. He’s also very nervous all the time. He probably knows he has no means of protecting himself. :(
I also have an adopted declawed siamese cat. But its only his front paws. He is living his best life.
He probably does feel defenseless but thank you for giving him safety and security.

My cat was a male and he was very independent and happy. He went outside and we never had a litter box. He was seriously the best cat in terms of cats. He definitely needed some attention though and neglect is definitely the highest priority imo.
My 2nd cat used to flopped on top of my father’s papers while he was grading them and even played with him by using his pen. He even climbed on my chest to cuddled and even gently forced him on his back for belly rubs on my belly. He was very sweet and friendly. We also had another cat that got along with him.

I had the habit of sneaking up on my cat and scaring him as he jumped to the ceiling.
One late night, when I got up to go to the bathroom, he sneaked into the tub and when I walked by he launched himself onto the inside of the shower curtain! Scared me to death! I almost had a cardiac event!
I didn't scold him - I rewarded him with lots of favorable attention and laughter! That was just the beginning of him learning to play lots of practical jokes on me!
He was WONDERFUL! I miss him terribly.

It appalls me people still declaw cats. Even in a shelter, you can find a cat that knows when and how to sheathe their claws. Got my cat at a shelter last year and he has never scratched me to the point of bleeding. If you're scared for children with a stray/abused/scared cat, get an already socialized cat & they'll communicate their needs in a way you can understand easier. But strays are literally so adorable it's worth the work.
Many rescue organizations will not allow anyone to adopt cats/kittens if they're planning on declawing the pet/s on application form. Hopefully one day all rescue shelters implement that for their protection and well being.
Yes, cats are family members with intelligence and feelings and personalities. We must be considerate of what and who they are. Learn all you can to make your cat comfortable and happy and loved.

This is a very good instructional video for folks who just don't understand cats... or who don't have the heart to understand them. On one level, I applaud the folks who made this video. (On another level, I'm sad that such an instructional video is necessary for so many people... Lots of folks out there who are just plain mean to cats.) 1. Always ensure if you have a kitten, to understand you have about 6 months to instill training easily. After that it takes much longer to adopt new habits (or if at all).
2. Biting/Clawing training, always over-react to bites and clawing to show pain. This will teach cats your tolerance levels. My cat even when the most upset will only place his teeth onto my skin and never apply pressure in fear of hurting me. Same with claws (unless its shower time)
3. You can punish your cats, but you'll need to retrain your brain. Don't handle them like a human child, use the instance for further discipline training:
3.a Don't want the cat to sit on your keyboard? Every time it does, use it as a good time for grooming, such as combs and nail clippings. The cat will do it less, and it will get more used to being groomed, win/win. Just apply same strategy to anything your cat does that you don't like, just make sure it happens right after it offends you so he can associate the procedure.
4. Do not respond to them with miaows or always respond to miaows of a kitten, rather respond to physical interactions. You will regret it later when your cat constantly seeks your attention vocally day and night.
5. Make sure you do a checkup every night when petting the cat, it will get you and the cat used to being handled all over. If you leave it too late the cat will feel violated and might scratch or bite you if it feels what you are doing is out of place.
6. If you want to take the indoor cat for walks, you've got 6 months as a kitten to train it, do not wait for later, it won't happen.

The only thing I disagree on is the outside part, I got my cat as a stray(she was at least 2 years old) and yes it took a long time, almost a year but she loves her harness and loves to go on walks, although she does still get scared of cars so I typically take her in her stroller until we get to the park
@@lanabeekeeper8292 Ah yeah 100% agree. I mean its not impossible to train older cats, its just 1000% harder, and you have to be more attentive etc. A lot of people cannot stomach the amount of training required so never will reach that level of dedication. So it shows how good of a pet owner you are.
VERY good list. Catowner for over 25years now. Weŕe at nr 33 in our "cats hall of fame" and at present we have 12 cats in our home. I can vouch for ALL of these things on the list+some more. Nearly all our cats are rescue cases or ex feral ones. They have ALL been tamed so I guess something we do is apparently attractive to cats and their behaviour. 🧡🐈⬛
Recognizing the subtle signs: My cat was not acting like himself the other day so I took him to the emergency vet and paid over 1k to ensure he felt better, came home and he was acting better than ever.

My cat never sleeps on me. Always near me tho 🥺 Right now I'm laying in my bed and she's sleeping on a chair that's right next to my bed 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Maybe if I put a blanket as cuddly as the one I put on the chair for her she would hop in to me sometimes. But maybe better not - I wouldn't want to accidentally kick her while sleeping

ive been watching sooo many of these, im getting a cat soo. and i recently had a dream where i got a cat and it just hated me, i was devastated. i still loved it tho but it hated me. i don’t want that to happend when i do get on so im trying my absolute best to do everything in my power to make them happy.

Watching this video made me sad to think that any animal would be neglected. I have 2 senior rescue kitties with FIV and everything that I do is for them because they are my EVERYTHING. Samson is 9 and Axil is 8. Samson sat on my laptop on this to get my attention and it broke. I immediately apologized for not giving him enough attention and happily went out and bought a new one. :-) It's taken Axil almost 2 years to really come out of his shell and trust me. Now he thinks he's my boyfriend 😆.
My neibour used to leave her cat alone in her apt. Up to two weeks. It was so sad my cats would play with him under the one crack under the door. We would put food and water under cuz we didnt know if he had any. I told the landlord on her. This tenant could not understand that it is wrong. So dispic@ble
@@chrismclellanart thank you for caring for him. I live in an apartment building and irresponsible people leave their animals behind all the time. I call the SPCA on people if need be because these poor babies can't speak up for themselves. So many people don't deserve their love.
