having a pet is wonderful. when i was a teenager there was a stray cat that would wait for me to come back home from school and it made the days better knowing i would have a friend waiting for me. a few years ago i got a dog and it was the same feeling, it made me happy to wake up in the morning and it was so happy to see me when i would come back from work. both times i was in depression and it felt like my pets understood me better than my family and friends. i think my next pets are gonna be a couple of birds. im happy your dog helps you feel better and i hope you completely get over depression.
I was about to get into depression but a street cat followed me and got into my home now I also started to feel better and started to take care of myself and my home
@Not A RUclipsr when were in depression sometimes its because we feel like we are worthless. having to take care about our pets proves that we are not, gives us a goal everyday. plus they will show you that they like you for everything youre doing. a pet will also try to make you as happy as you make them. pets are wonderful when you take good care of them
@@catcooper9461 Right! Praising them works and so does scolding them but neither will work if there's no bond. It's how we communicate with our pets beyond "feed me"
My cat 100% understands when she does something wrong. She does that shit on purpose while staring me in the eyes. I love her Edit:this is the most likes I’ve ever gotten. I wanna give thanks to my baby girl Oreo. We’re famous baby!
Yes. Mine absolutely knows what 'No!' means, she just loves to push me RIGHT up to my breaking point, stares as the singular tear rolls down my cheek then comes over and stops doing what she wasn't supposed to be doing
Our various cats have all responded differently to being scolded, but it worked for most of them to train them. We took in a cat that never heard "No" ever and she just is what you'd think of when you hear the word "undisciplined". She acts up and does absolutely whatever she wants. The other cats know what No means and respect the few rules they are given. Normally our cats respond very well to being told no. We have had some that ignore you when you scold them, and others so sensitive that they run and hide and get all sad when scolded, but it normally is something that cats easily learn and accept and they become much better behaved from knowing there are limits and rules.
when we first got our rescue cat she was terrified of the word no. If said it quietly and gently she would run upstairs and hide under the bed. After maybe a year she didn't give a hoot about the word no, no matter how we said it, because she knew we loved her and would never hurt her and now I'm crying
I have an extremely strong bond with my cat. He trusts me totally & acts similar to a dog. He comes running when I call him. He waits by the door when I leave. Stays in the bathroom while I shower, goes on walks into the woods with me & rides in the car. He knows to stay on my right when we go up stairs. He's a flame point Siamese & he's extremely intelligent. He knows when he does something he shouldn't & even plans on it when I turn my back. He sleeps so close to my face his whiskers tinkle my cheek. Its also true about the dental hygiene. I didn't know until I had to spend $1,000 on dental care. Buying a good quality cat food can help keep them healthy as well.
I disagree with the issue of cats knowing/not knowing what they have done wrong. I have the easiest, most gentle & sensitive cat in the world. All I ever have to do is tell her NO over a behavior for her to drop it. If she does it again, I make a little disapproving noise like: eeh, eehh! She KNOWS exactly what she is doing wrong and quits!
Exactly, I have two cats, a regular street cat and a sphynx and they know exactly what 'no' means, people act like cats are dumb and they're not I think my older cat has taught majority of what she's learned to my sphynx cat because they both almost think alike and I'm glad about that.
They dont know whats wrong from right, they do know wat makes u displease overtime repetitively. Removing you will remove the prohibition and they will just do it as their primal instinct takeover
@@l_ifeefi_l1998 Interesting comment; however, it’s obvious that for the purposes of this video we are speaking in terms of behaviors that relate to household norms in domesticated cats - tearing up the furniture, climbing the drapes, etc. I have even observed hungry feral cats at their food dish outside my window in the middle of winter allowing each other to eat first rather than greedily gulping down the food. They would courteously allow one another to “eat first” and would rub each other cheeks lovingly! They do have their own norms for behavior out in the wild too, but when they are in our homes they know how to adjust to ours.
Thats not true for most cats. When someone comes home and the cat tore up the end of a pillow then the homeowner beats the cat badly that cat will never learn and has no idea why its being beat. Cats are the most abused pet yearly.
Biggest pro tip is the water fountain. Our male cat kept having urinary issues and it was very scary. The water fountain not only makes him drink a LOT more water but he is constantly entertained by watching it
How long did it take for your cat to use the water fountain on a daily basis? I bought one recently and only seen him use it once. He isn't quite comfortable with it yet.
@@Kyvach a few weeks. It wasn't immediate. But now he is obsessed with it and he hasn't had any urinary problems since. Edit:our other cat uses it more now too
We started keeping the water bowl in the shower because my cats love to knock all of the water out. When I started doing this, they began drinking from the faucet and now every time I walk into the bathroom, they’re waiting patiently for water. Made a world of a difference in how much they consume every day.
We have also made plenty of mistakes with our cat. We can't change the past, what matters most is that we are aware of our mistakes and change our behavior.
Cats are so misunderstood and often lead to them being mistreated.. I love my two cats and they are the light of my life. This helps me learn more about my cats
The very few times my Juliette has done something unacceptable, she's always responded to VERY gentle scolding, clearing my throat, or even just a disapproving look. She always comes back a minute later and apologizes, and never repeats her transgression. By and large, she is perhaps one of the best-behaved cats I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Doesn't scratch at the furniture, walls, or carpeting. She won't even jump onto the furniture except for my bed. Yes, I know I'm the luckiest mobile can opener a cat could ever have. Whomever the human piece of excrement that abandoned her as a kitten lost out on an amazing pet - but perhaps they did her a favor. Fun fact: positive reinforcement not only works for cats, but for most animals, and humans too.
My cat screams at me to look at her as she tries to knock anything over while staring me dead in the eyes as I repeatedly say 'no' at different octaves, hoping one works, as I watch desperately to get her to not knock over literally anything
All sounds good but one glaring part. "never repeats her transgression." If this were literally true she must be a "Godly and intelligent kitty" far above and beyond what anyone has ever experienced.....lol!
I have a senior female cat name "Kitkat" & ive had her since she was a kitten. In the past, Ive usually had boy cats because, female cats can be moody divas lol. I also have a daschund whose 14 years old whom i have had since he was 1 year old. When they were both young, as i walked my dog Max, Kitkat would walk with us. I never inagined I was also teaching Kitkat do her businezz outside. I always kept a litter box but she never used it. Instead she would let me know she wanted to go outside. Over the years, I always talk and sing to my animals. Kitkat is a moody diva but ive realized she is reflection of my personality. She always has to sleep near me( most, times i wake up and she is sleeping on my hip lol. ) I thought i saved them but realized they have saved me. I love them as my children and its been an honor and so awesome to cultivate their personalities.
My cat definitely knows right from wrong because he only does bad stuff when we're not around and when he hears us coming he jumps down and runs away so fast 😅
I think what they're trying to say is, the cat doesn't know what they are being punished for unless its done within around 2 seconds after the unwanted behavior. After that it just scares and confuses them and if you keep doing it they will start to hate being around the big scary human -
I was a nurse in an animal hospital and I can tell you that one of the most common injuries are cats falling out of highrise windows. A cat can die from a 3 story fall.
Don't change your cat food brand abruptly. They take time to adjust to brand or flavor changes. My cats got sick too. My vet told me to not experiment with food. Cats are way too sensitive.
I mean I feel like it really depends on the cats a living situation. Like if they were a stray they go and eat anything and their body will be used to that However if you’ve been raising your cat on the exact same food for years then a change can be very detrimental. If you’re going to experiment with food with your cat it seems like you have to start early with it
I use mostly same brand of dry and just rotate the side dish of wet food he gets at ea meal (real tuna, chicken and salmon and also human grade wet cat food). He likes the junk brands a lot (alpo ect) but only gets them in a pinch.
Protect the cats at all costs. People who hurt them or kill them should be buried. I can't respect human rights if a human can't respect animal rights...
So, I'm Queen of cats 😂 my grandma loved cats, my mom love cats, I am born surrounded by a lot of cats and I look at them like my family. No punishments. Just love and hugs. 😸😻😽
Some cats are just rebels 😅My cat has 4 clean litter boxes, but he likes to urinate inside the house. And he knows it's wrong, because when he sees me after peeing inside the house he hits the road. LOL
All I have to do is give my cat a firm NO, and that's enough for him to understand he did something wrong, and not do it again. Meanwhile, there's my mom, who tries to sweet-talk right/wrong and safety reasons to him. 😅 Obviously, she's not the one he listens to.
@@izabela.wilson that may have to do with more than just rebellious behaviour! urinating around the house or on furniture can be a sign of anxiety/stress or insecurity of some kind. For example, some cats with separation anxiety may urinate around the house out of stress when left alone.
Regarding water, my ginger tabby (passed away on January 12, 2022 at 18+ years of age) was an indoor/outdoor cat. He always preferred his water outside sourced from the tap in a large container. There was something about the water being outdoors and fresh where the water level was near the top of the container (an old stainless steel steam pot). The height of the water in a large container kept his whiskers from touching the sides. I think he also liked how it seemed more "natural" in an outdoor setting. He did eventually die of kidney failure. I miss him.
@@lighthousephoto7143 To be fair, I think all cats are different. I had a cat who liked to drink from a spray bottle and another from a dripping bathtub faucet. They are fascinating creatures.
My cats love it when do my laundry. They love to jump and make me notice them. When I drain the water one like to jump on my back to see what I am doing. One even likes to sleep on the washer. They are smarter than you give them credit for. 😊
Thank goodness I never physically punished my cat. I just talk to them and they listen. That's how I discipline my cats. I love them so much. They even like being around me and sleeping on my back and chest.
My cats know their names and they totally understand voice tone. I never yell at them, but they know the disapproving tone, which is closer to a stage whisper than yelling. They INSTANTLY stop bad behavior when I say their name in the tone. Unfortunately, cats do what cats want to do, and they often need to be reminded.
Thanks so much for letting me know about this.I love cats so much. My cat's name is Benny. He's only three months old. Thank you so much for posting videos like this about our pets🎀❤ : From Srilanka 😊
My wife and I have given our cat greenies every day at the same times we brush our own for almost 13 years. She loves them and so far thankfully the cat gets a higher grade for her teeth at the vet than I do from the dentist. Wish I could brush my teeth by eating a Reeses peanut butter cup.
I LOVE cats so so much and thank you for these important tips a few of which I was not aware of either and I'm very glad I watched this. Important information that I will remember when I have cats. I especially agree with no yelling at them and no hitting whatsoever no matter what. I hope every cat lover and cat owner pays attention to this. The priority has to be their emotional/mental health so they feel that they're loved and safe. I love cats so!
You still need to teach them a lesson, they must understand that your decision is more important, so cats then can trust you. If cat is trusting you, that's gg.
i agree everything else but the first one. you can change your cats diet anytime. a lot of cats may not like their new food yet, but they will, it only needs patience. start mixing the new food in the food your cat currently eats, and slowly start putting the new food more than the other, and slowly start to reduce the food your cat is used to eat. if your cat has kibbles available 24/7 that may also distract the cat for diet changing, surely they will realize you have mixed new food to the old one and just eats kibbles. when you give your cat their meal take the kibbles somewhere not reachable for your cat until they eat the food. if it doesn't seem to work, try taking them away whole actually, when they have kibbles all the time they probably are not that hungry to eat their meal. if your cat loves kibbles you can mix some of it to their meal too, or give the kibbles back when your cat gets used to their new diet. for some cats changing a diet might take a long time, but patience is the key, don't give up :) Idk if this comment was necessary but i wanted to share it
I don't agree with the first argument. I work in a pet store and know the basics pretty well and have 3 ragdolls on our own. If you give other food without mixing there is a chance they won't eat. If you mix it slowly 2 weeks, it's almost always fine. Sometimes their a diva, Queen of cats and don't want it or like it to their taste lime humams prefer some food.
You must discipline them sometimes. Our kitties know the stove and kitchen counters are no-cat zones. If they go someplace that's dangerous for them I hiss at them. They understand hissing. The big cat's not happy. It works if it happens right in the moment and they can easily associate it. It's also incredibly important to follow on with positive reassurance once they are out of the no-fly zone.
@@mikeb53 Yeah and they quickly learn. After a while all you need to do is shake the water pistol and they know what's next if they don't stop digging the couch, climbing the blinds or eating a plastic bag ... WHYYYY do my cats want to eat plastic! I don't get that one.
I got pissed when my cat got near my soldering station I have flux with rosin along with leaded soder and rubbing alcohol the actual kit itself can get up to 500°F if it was accidentally left on but I'm not very strict but situations where they could get hurt I get mad about but I don't really hit him just pick him up a little tap and told no and no not a smack I don't condone that but just a light tap like as if you lightly tapped someone's hand
One of my cats, Ivy. Eats only the most expensive wet food there is to find in the store. She developed a preference and taste over a couple of months last year. We tried feeding her more affordable wet food but she won't eat it. She's such a diva.
This has happened with mine. She's old and sick though so I've decided I don't care. I'd rather have her than anything else so she's worth it. But, same kind of deal. She always got dry kibble until a few months ago after I found her keeled over on the edge of death. I had to use the wet to get her medications in her, but now she won't really eat much else. Little bugger! hehe! Ah well. It might be expensive as hell (probably a couple hundred bucks/month on canned food alone), but I don't care. She's my best friend. I'd buy it for her no matter what it cost. :)
You trained her to eat only the cashy food. Its 100% on you. Buy cheap food. Plate it up, and if it doesnt eat it, dont feed her until the next day. If it doesnt eat dont feed it til the next day. Eventually itll realize its food. Its just like a kid. Picky eaters are created by caterers.
@@eduffy4937 Sounds a bit harsh. It might be a better idea to feed little portions of the food he likes alongside a normal sized portion of the cheaper food. AND WASH + FILL IT WITH FRESH (WET) FOOD FREQUENTLY
My cats a street cat n I got them 4 months ago and they do nothing. They’re old n I try to engage with them but they rather sleep n eat. They don’t even cuddle. Idk wat to do but I do try to give them love.
One of my cats (former "stray" for a number of years prior) thinks of vomiting as a competitive sport. Mostly after he inhales food. Even back in his "outside" days, if I'd put out a whole can, he'd inhale the whole thing, then vomit it back out minutes later. So I'd have to split it into small portions and babysit him for the duration whenever possible, even now. Unless I dole out food a spoonful at a time, it's like living with the Cheddar Goblin.
my cat sometimes gobbles food to make himself vomit deliberately if he has a fur ball ready to eject. Maybe yours gobbles because he had food stolen off him by other cats? Try putting his dish up on a table or worktop? He might feel less cornered. you can always put newspaper under it.
@@pheart2381 Naw. They share the same bowls/dishes, else I'd be throwing out twice as much food. Both are finicky and would put Morris The Cat to shame. Just yesterday, Cheddar Goblin vomited up a dry sausage of just food (pate + dry), and by the time I came back with paper towels to scoop it up, he re-ate the damned thing. Gaaaah. But nope, no hair mixed in. And even that was unusual, as they rarely touch the crunchies unless they're on a hunger strike from wet-food (pate, shreds, chunks, "extra-gravy", no diff).
Every day is a learning day for me, learning new information on our beloved kitty. Thanks for this useful vid. No 5 is very true. Our indoor cats do have fleas and worms. Monthly check is a must.
eggs of fleas can get stuck under the shoes of people that come in and out the house thats how they come in and if they have worms its usually cause of the food they get, like for example raw meat. so if you have that a lot with your cats its worth checking this aswell.
Same here! My Fur Baby knows she's not allowed on the Dinner Table or Kitchen Counters...we do not have any issues with that..I say Get Down and she jumps off the 1st and only time I tell her to....lol
Same I was once sitting in the kitchen and I left for a second and when I came back she was on the table eating my pasta so I snuck behind her since she was busy snacking and I just said "What are you doing?" And she just JUMPED off the table since I scared her so much 😭😭
This was a good video, but cats DON'T need their teeth checked once a year. That's ridiculous as is the assertion that if a cat throws up once a week this is something that needs to be addressed by a Veteranarian.
Yes. Once my little Hanzi threw up, and I decided it was from hair. So I am very diligent in coming their hair, and he never threw up again. They are Chinchilla cats
"Because cats don't understand that certain behaviours are undesirable..." That's simply NOT true. Cats understand very well when they did something wrong, and their behaviour AFTER that proves that without any doubt (for example when they hide under the bed immediately when they damaged something).
I give my cat a small pat of frozen unsalted butter in his food to keep him from getting hair clogged which was causing him to vomit his food until the clogged was passed. A clog can be a life threatening problem. He's never vomited a hair ball nor vomited his food since I've been putting unsalted butter in his food and his Cat-Sip milk.
Thank you for making these dog and cat videos! Me and my family are gonna have a cat and dog after our new house, and we want the best for them! Again, thank you:)
The food thing is so true, I got lucky that when my fifteen year old cat developed kidney disease I was lucky enough that it was a brand just like the one I already fed her. But she won’t eat ANY other food other than a bit of cooked chicken or ham every so often no matter what. But my two kittens, eleven and eight weeks old respectively enjoy a broad range of foods in different flavours. I generally stick to the same brand although I vary up the flavours every mealtime and usually buy the occasional individual mini-can or sachets of something different entirely such as brand, or if I have jelly and gravy based food at home I’ll get fish terrine or pate to constantly vary their mealtimes. I admit I enjoy seeing them react to different flavours and types of food. They have different personalities too. Nala is a confident natural born hunter and enjoys getting dry food treats one by one as I toss them so they skitter across the wooden floor for her to chase and eat. She requires much more work from me in terms of play. Shadow plays for awhile then settles for a nap but Nala still wants to play. On the other hand Shadow loves her food and tends to seek me out to nap on or against more.
My cat would have rather starved to death then eat the Hill prescription diet that was prescribed to him. No joke! Luckily Purina has a food that I switched to and my cat ate just fine.
I disagree they live in the moment. My cat remembers the neighbours teen , when very young, picked her up by her tail as a kitten. She's still scared of her. She runs to me if she sees her.
@@tanyabrown9839 they know the word 'no' though. My cat responds to that . She'll do a body swerve & pretend she wasn't going to claw the sofa if I catch her early enough 😁
That’s what I’m saying, cats can remember something like that but not that only 5 minutes before they destroyed a toilet paper roll or clawed the couch. 👀
My mom had a cat as a kitten, she had to move to a different state for a job and my grandparents kept that cat for 22 years. They gave him a different name but when she went home to visit she called his other name and he knew her voice and came running and loved her. He didn't do that for anyone else ever. He remembered.
Don't ever under estimate a cat..they are clever. My cat's understands the word NO... A few weeks ago one of my cat's wanted to sit on the windowsill I said no as my other cat was there and this one pushes her off. He was sitting beside me, I had to say no twice.the third time I said no ( just no) he bit my hand and run straight away out the room. He knew he had done wrong.( it really hurt) 10 minutes later he was back....wanting to be petted, he was so loving ❤. How can you be cross with them... I have started to turn my back on him now when I say No..seems to work.🤞🤞
I have a persian and he is sooo intelligent he knows when he can misbehave and when he needs to be on his best behavior 😂 trying new foods is not his thing. He knows when im upset so i get hugs from him .Sometimes he doesnt want to be touched but most times he luvs being with us in our bed or sitting with us on the dinner table but he won't eat anything we eat😂 luvs his treats 😅 grooming him is a must and vet check ups is a must
My cat is 12 and has always been scared. My parents were very private people and I adopted her when they died. I try to spoil her as much as I can and leave her be cause it's what she wants. I don't do a thing to scare her.
I picked up a rescue when I was 6. She didn’t become friendly until years later when we brought in a kitten and he got attention for being nice so she started to get friendly too, try to have a second so they keep each other company
My cat was always that type of cat who vomits often. Sometimes once a week, sometimes nothing happens for months, sometimes 2-3 times a day. I always thouth that this is not normal, I asked a gazillion times about it to lots and lots of vets, and every time I got the same answer that if he has a good appetite and behaves normal, it's OK. I tried everything: antiacid pills, cat grass, raised plates, anti-foaming plates, everyday combing in the springtime and autumn, anti hairball paste, not changing the food often...Nothing helped, but my cat is 15 now, and his playful, likes to eat, blood sample tests said he's perfectly healthy. I don't know what more can I do for him, but I am open to hear a solution.
This happens to my cat as well. Sometimes she throws probably 4-5 times a week. I asked the vet about it as well and they had no concern if there were not health issues. I think she is just eating to fast. But the cat is very healthy overall
My cat eats chicken and tuna (in spring water not brine) and always has a bowl of dry food available IF she wants it. She eats occasional cat treats but wants to try nearly everything I eat (never chocolate) and likes yoghurt and ice cream, fromage frais and similar things and will drink commercial cat milk but usually only takes a tiny bit and she prefers water and you have to make sure it's always fresh. I always use dental chews for my own cat, my outdoor ones and even the foxes who regularly visit me get dental sticks twice a week too!
Idk if the foxes you’re referring to are wild, but it is often harmful to feed wild animals. What is going to happen if you move away or they start raiding your neighbor’s trash?
I am very young, like seven and a half, and just yesterday , I carried my cat very weirdly, not the normal way. Today I came back from school, and tried to carry my cat again! I carried her perfectly! I was very happy, thank you god! Also thank you for making us know more about our cats! Stay safe! Also I was very surprised bc My cat’s weight is almost the same weight as mine, and I can carry her perfectly! To the people like me, try to practice to carry your cat! God will save a spot for you to learn how to carry your cat perfectly like me! Stay safe!😊
My cat can understand what is and isn't good behavior. It also understands that actions lead to consequences. My cat also is not only not afraid of me but loves me more than I could imagine was possible❤️. I believe the animal to an extant can tell the intention/energy of a person to make these decisions.
Thanks for the video, but I've had cats since I was a child and have two now. The Do know when they do something wrong if they are told and scolded, and I have shouted "Stop!" to my cat sand they know and will get off the table and still show me love and purr on me. They understand more than you know and when told by a shout or in a stern way they get it and will stay off the table (and when they know I can see them and when they hear me coming I can hear them jump off - sneaky!) LOL
I have always lived with cats, a lot of cats. Rescue cats, kittens born by my cats, a full house. I believe they understand much more than we give them credit for. They sense our emotions whether grief, happiness and everything in between and act accordingly. If one is upset, unhappy, grieving they will give extra love, if your world is falling apart they will feel disoriented. If you rescue a frightened, abandonned, starving kitten it will sit quietly on your lap while you are taking it home. Often abandonned kittens will find you '( if you live in a house). They will copy your behavior ( i had a cat who used the toilet as a human). I also believe they understand words. I talk to my cats, i sing to them especially if they are ill, i communicate with them. I have an incanny feeling when they approach their end, even when my vet doesn't see it coming, i feel when they have fever. I don't believe in physical violence even when they poo where they shouldn't. It generally means they are disoriented. They bring me gifts: dead mices, birds, rats ( twice) and even a bat! Cats don't like loud voices so shouting at them will have no result. Animals respond to love so never forget to be kind to your pets, they will give it back and you will all be happier. Just operate from a place of love.
Even if a cat does land on its feet after falling a long way it can cause seroius injuries. 1 of my friends kitten fell or got pushed of a 3rd floor balcony and ended up with broken hip and legs. She survived but was in pain for months. heard 1 of the kids shout the kitten has fallen off the balcony. so ran down the stairs as fast as i could and found the poor thing on the concrete. took off my jumper and wrapped her up as best i could to stop her moving before i picked her up and rushed her to the vet. i was babysitting so had to ring the mum to get home as fast as possible. Poor thing was only about 10 weeks old and suspect it was the boyfriend of the oldest kid that pushed or threw the kitten off the balcony. Poor thing was purring to try and get rid of the pain. Puring isnt just when their happy its also what they do to relieve pain. i noticed when i had torn ligaments in both wrists and a hairline fracture in 1 elbow after falling down stairs when a cat sat on them and purred my pain went away. the purring relaxes them and humans reducing stress and the vibrations have a healing effect on painfull areas just like painkillers do.
actually, cats know when they did something wrong and they do understand punishment. but, being an animal, it doesn't stop them to do the bad thing over and over again. the best way is to prevent your cat from doing bad things. for example, you noticed that your cat is going to bully other cats (by seeing their body language). then, you just come close to the cat or touch the cat. by doing so, they won't do the bad thing because you're there and they do realize that you don't like that kind of behavior
About the first thing- my cat demands changing her food regularly. She gets bored and will stop eating it as usual until I get her a new one. Which I understand, I get tired of the same foods too
I disagree with the tip about feeding cats the same food. I used to switch flavors and brands of dry food BUT MY CAT WOULDN'T GO NEAR IT. She was losing weight. I finally hit upon the flavor she likes and she cleans her bowl. I think switching only makes for a finicky cat , not that cat's need any help in that department.
Our cat is the same with dry food, she wouldn’t touch some brands of dry food. With certain cats I believe you have to switch it up with wet food sometimes though. With our cat she likes a certain brand of dry food and doesn’t get sick of it, but wet food is quite different. Once she gets sick of a certain type or if she just doesn’t like it, she will just refuse to eat it no matter what. But if it’s a flavour she likes and isn’t sick of, she will happily eat it. I feel it’s worth the trouble of getting some different flavours from time to time.
You should always feed your cat both wet and dry food, ideally wet food twice a day followed by dry food once. There are a lot of brands and varieties with both. Half the time I give them their regular food, the other half something new. If they don’t like the new food, usually its specific flavours rather than every flavour in a box. If they don’t like it I’ll try something else next time. Almost always they will come back to the bowl and eat their food albeit hesitantly if it’s unfamiliar. If it’s got gravy on it there’s a good chance they’ll eat it! I would say though that with dry food they are a lot more fussy and can just refuse it. Also dry food can go stale after so long, especially if not in an airtight container or a big box/bag of it. I notice even with a relatively small box by the time I reach the bottom my cats are more reluctant to eat it. Fresh unopened box no problem. If you went and bought six different flavours/brands it’s likely they’d munch on at least half of them. Clearly though if you always give them the exact same food your making it much harder for them ever to change. And many cats after so long will eventually get bored of that same food all the time, so you’ll have to try new stuff anyhow.
I recently had to change my cats diet to Royal Canine for Urinary health, they have wet, dry and treats,y.kitties love it, thankfully, but vet said they will have to eat it the rest of their life, so no changes, for health reasons.
My cat knows every mess he makes...even he makes an eye contact before making any mess...we named him messy😂 because he keeps making a lot of mess everytime....and he knows what no means he gets angry everytime I say no and he doesn't comes near me unless I let him do whatever he wants...cos he's spoiled😂...I still love him alot❤😌
I can't fill my cats' water bowl often enough! One will not eat canned food, at all. Kibble only! The other gets 1/4 can in the a.m., with hot water to warm it as it comes out of the fridge - ends up warm between the cold + hot.
Yelling at cats definitely works, you just have to make sure they know why you're yelling at them. When I've caught one of my cats doing something, I've yelled at them and it scared the heck out of them. They're both very good and very affectionate cats now. Neither of them are scared of me and I rarely have to yell at either of them anymore. Doing nothing or only rewarding good behavior doesn't work.
Made the mistake of NOT asking my vet how much it cost to get my cat's teeth cleaned. Went to pick him up. $500! Canceled my dentist visit to get MY teeth cleaned until I could financially recover from that vet bill.
These were all educational, rational and well balanced and animated. Good job :) In short: at least in relation to relationship: Treat your cat like you would want to be treated if you were a cat. This includes - as with babies - not being on the _extreme_ end of affectionate or attatched, although that is seldom. But if that happened, that could create an unhealthy attatchment or reliance just like with humans. Don't underestimate a cat's ability to communicate, learning ability, or understand you - if consistent. Cats don't hold resentment nor go "back in the past" like we do, however they ARE able to be "indoctrinated" to learn distrust or fear. Of people. If your cat does something wrong, it's kind of too late already. If it's a reoccuring thing, just try to be aware and if you see it's on the way to happen again, say "No." clearly/assertive but calmly, and maybe lift them away calmly by the neck skin in the "worst" situation. If it's a non-reocurring thing, chances are you were the one that did a mistake in the first place or didn't think far enough.
Another one: NEVER LET YOUR CAT PLAY WITH STRINGS, RIBBONS OR ANYTHING CORD-LIKE UNATTENDED. My cat swallowed about a 16" length of fabric ribbon and nearly died. She got a linear foreign body obstruction where basically her intestine bunched itself up trying to pass the ribbon. In order to remove it, she needed surgery that cost $3000.
Reading the sheer volume of "Nope, my cat DOES understand when they've done something wrong" gives me hope. My kitty is quite literally my closest friend in the entire world, but she still does things she's not supposed to sometimes (Including dangerous things like chewing cords once in a while) and she not only knows what I mean when I tell her no, she sasses me if it's something she really wants to do like keep walking on a cupboard/table surface. But, I also understand she's curious. I'm not just here to deny her wishes, I'm here to be her friend and she knows this. So, when she's curious about stuff she can't really do or can't get too, I'll often help her. I often pick her up and hold her close to whatever she showed interest in and she studies it intently, then once she's done and starts ignoring it, I know she's done, I put her down and she's fine. :) It's also adorable when we team up. If she sees a fly buzzing about, I'll often scoop her up and then hold her gently, but firmly and securely and in such a way as to have her front kitty arms loose so I can get her close to the fly and then she does the swatting. The first time I did it, she spooked and for the first few seconds she was like "What in gods name are you doing?!?!?!"... Then suddenly "What are you.. Oh! AWESOME!". Then I get to hold a tiny flailing predator who gets the job done.
You cat owners are not doing 21 things that hurt your cat. You love them, feed them right, change their litter, give them shelter, play with them, let them sleep on you. I couldn't even watch this, the premise is preposterous. Your cat is fine and your cat loves you.
YOU may be doing all the right things, but you'd be surprised at the amount of owners that haven't got a clue or have no experience on how to treat their cat. I've had cats all my life and am still learning things every day
Sometimes its not super obvious to humans when animals are suffering. For a while we even thought it was okay to keep goldfish in bowls, and that actually seriously harms them as their body length stops growing but their organs dont. Some might be observant, but others could overlook or normalize signs that something may be wrong, or just not know enough. And many think feeding it only dry food is feeding it right (when that comes with the risk of long term dehydration). My dads cat vomits on a daily basis, and although he is not worried for it, he also hasn't taken it to the vet to make sure its actually nothing wrong
When I am feeling a very strong negative feeling like sadness or anger my cat will come snuggle me to make me feel better. I got him as a Christmas gift I love him so much.
Lol. I discipline my cat and he learns. He’s the most social , well behaved and lovable cat I’ve ever had. He’s friendly and very gregarious. He knows what he can and can’t do. He knows not to get under foot when people are walking. Cats and dogs can easily be killed if you step on them. I never want this for my cat. I’ve trained him to not get under peoples feet when they are walking. He will stay by the side, lead or follow. But never gets tangled and risks injury to himself or a person. He never destroys or breaks things in the house. He has plenty of toys and scratch posts throughout the house. He’s an indoor cat, but I take him outside once a day because he likes to nibble on grass occasionally. He looks forward to this time of the day. He never wanders off, and when I tell him it’s time to go back inside, he runs to the door. He’s a great cat. But he didn’t get that way without learning right from wrong. If you don’t discipline your cat, then you have no reason to be disappointed if he breaks something or hurts himself. He rarely acts up and is a total joy to be around. He only gets a tad unruly at dusk and dawn. Because it’s natural for him. He darts through the house like a maniac and plays with his toys. These episodes only last 10-15 minutes and he’s back to normal. I don’t get on his case about it because that’s what cats do. But he doesn’t destroy things and doesn’t trash the house. His biggest weakness is the Christmas tree 😅. But hey, it’s only for a few weeks a year, so I deal with it. Other than that, he’s a perfect cat. Every guest I have over to my house compliments him. They can’t believe how lovable and well behaved he is. Even people that generally don’t care for cats love him. He gets lots of attention and he loves it. But I spent a lot of time establishing boundaries with him. I don’t want a pet that’s going to be a massive pain in the butt. I got kids for that. 😂
I’m watching this to kill time because my cat decided to take a nap in the middle of the bed…while I was making it. I feel like I’m going to end up sleeping on the couch only for her to climb up on the couch and steal my blanket.
Wow that was a very eye opening video, and I learn a lot from it.So thank you so much for sharing it with people, and may the good Lord bless you and your family!
This is why I try to protect my cats when my dad beats them. He gets mad at me, saying they need to learn, but I can't stand to watch them get hurt. I've been through three fathers, and all of them have something in common: Abuse. I loved all my kittens growing up, which is why I become heart broken or depressed when no one would let me near them. But now, I've become attached to my current cat. Sorry, I'm talking to me. What I'm trying to say is, don't hurt a cat for the fun of it. You have to understand that they have feelings too. When I got hurt or upset, my cat, she started to cry because she saw me in pain. They can detect emotions whether they choose to ignore it or not. Cats have saved plenty of lives in the past, and aren't bad. It usually just depends on the environment they've grown up in. My cats usually like to hide, while one lives outside so he can roam free. I don't know about your cats, so I guess I can't really say much. Just treat your animals with respect please! No matter the type. Thank you.
hello , garfield was definitely my road to success with my parents. the lasagna was to tell you would you take your owner food. the blanket on him was to tell him that he loves me. the visitor pink cat was to not like them as his friend forever but do not show him. the yellow dog was to play with when he comes over but do not go to him. elle for kits
I have taught my cat the meaning of no, good, come and her name through association using food. You know cats aren’t like dogs, they won’t do whatever you want them to at anytime. So sometimes she does things I don’t want her to do and I say no and she’ll still do it. About a week ago she climbed our double bed and I had the fan on and she tried to slap it😹 so I lightly shouted nooo and she stopped straight away. Cats don’t have human ethics and morals. But they will generally not do something if you catch them in the act and say no in a disapproving voice. Better to teach them basic words like no and good
When I get home from work, the first thing I do is get myself a big mug of ice water. Well my cat, Monty, kept eyeing it and wanted to drink. Now I prepare two ice waters when I get home from work! He loves it. Hey, whatever we need to do to get them to drink!
21 lessons I really hope I learned, but I'm not sure, rather doubtful, I was evil in way too many ways to my cat when I had her years ago, and it breaks my heart to talk about it and her, and think about both, I can never stop hating myself for how I treated her when she was alive.😭
I know what you mean. My first cat adopted me and taught me how to be a good pet parent. Up to that point I had been a thoughtless and negligent one. I feel such guilt over the way I treated pets before her that sometimes I ask all my early pets to forgive my cruelty to them and hope that they do. Of course I don't know, but I hope they can.
You don’t know what you don’t know. It’s good that you are learning and correcting yourself. I had a little puppy dog years ago and I didn’t realize he was sick. When I realized something was off, I took him to a first vet who told me there was nothing to worry about. He started getting worse so I took him to another vet who found what was wrong straight away and he said he was shocked the first vet didn’t find out. It was already too late for my poor Bobo and he died later that week. I still feel absolutely awful to this day. He lived such a short life. If only I had found earlier. I can’t stop thinking about all the times I scolded him for not peeing where he was supposed to. He would have been an awesome, kind hearted dog.
It looks like many people disagree with the supposition that a cat does not know that, he or she has done something wrong. As a lifelong cat parent, I agree with all of you.
As a person who suffer from depression and severe anxiety, since I got a cat, I started trying to take care of myself and clean my room and house
having a pet is wonderful. when i was a teenager there was a stray cat that would wait for me to come back home from school and it made the days better knowing i would have a friend waiting for me. a few years ago i got a dog and it was the same feeling, it made me happy to wake up in the morning and it was so happy to see me when i would come back from work. both times i was in depression and it felt like my pets understood me better than my family and friends. i think my next pets are gonna be a couple of birds. im happy your dog helps you feel better and i hope you completely get over depression.
I was about to get into depression but a street cat followed me and got into my home now I also started to feel better and started to take care of myself and my home
👍🏻
I’m glad ur not like the other comments, bragging about yelling at their cats 😤
@Not A RUclipsr when were in depression sometimes its because we feel like we are worthless. having to take care about our pets proves that we are not, gives us a goal everyday. plus they will show you that they like you for everything youre doing. a pet will also try to make you as happy as you make them. pets are wonderful when you take good care of them
To say cats don't know when they've done something wrong is soooo FAR from truth. Don't underestimate their intelligence 😼
Lol exactly, my cat knows I don’t like her on certain furniture and jumps right off with a guilty look when I enter the room.
My cat runs away from me and hydes under the bed when she knows that she did something wrong :)).
Shes quite funny when she does that.
@@catcooper9461 Right! Praising them works and so does scolding them but neither will work if there's no bond. It's how we communicate with our pets beyond "feed me"
idk but my cat always looks like she did something wrong everytime she poops in her litterbox.
Agreed. I made the same comment before reading yours.
My cat 100% understands when she does something wrong. She does that shit on purpose while staring me in the eyes. I love her
Edit:this is the most likes I’ve ever gotten. I wanna give thanks to my baby girl Oreo. We’re famous baby!

LMAO- NO BECAUSE MY CAT PEES ON THE FLOOR WHILE LOOKING AT ME THEN WHENEVER I WALK OVER THERE SHE SPRINTS. She also watches me clean the pee 💀
@@user-nq7lr8fy8p 100% Agree, my Cat knows what she is doing
He said physical are you dumb! the second time in the comments I have to say this
My cat absolutely knows what "No!" means. He gets mad when I tell him no, because he's spoiled.
Yes. Mine absolutely knows what 'No!' means, she just loves to push me RIGHT up to my breaking point, stares as the singular tear rolls down my cheek then comes over and stops doing what she wasn't supposed to be doing
bruh same🥲
Mine too. They stopped scratching my furniture by. My saying no, and I spray their scratch pad and Pole with catnip spray now and then
Our various cats have all responded differently to being scolded, but it worked for most of them to train them.
After maybe a year she didn't give a hoot about the word no, no matter how we said it, because she knew we loved her and would never hurt her
and now I'm crying
@@tamararutland-mills9530 same thing. Wats acceptable doesn't mean its right or wrong.
The water fountain not only makes him drink a LOT more water but he is constantly entertained by watching it
Where could we get these fountains? Can you give me tips?
How long did it take for your cat to use the water fountain on a daily basis? I bought one recently and only seen him use it once. He isn't quite comfortable with it yet.
@@Kyvach a few weeks. It wasn't immediate. But now he is obsessed with it and he hasn't had any urinary problems since.
Edit:our other cat uses it more now too
@@MeisterSchwabbo we just got one on Amazon I believe. They just prefer drinking from running water, rather than stagnant water.
Btw anyone with male cats who have urinary problems, pay attention and don't ignore it.

I am so happy for you to have your companion for such a long time. How "fit" is a cat of that age? Is she still able to jump and climb?
We started keeping the water bowl in the shower because my cats love to knock all of the water out. When I started doing this, they began drinking from the faucet and now every time I walk into the bathroom, they’re waiting patiently for water. Made a world of a difference in how much they consume every day.
I am guilty of way to many of these things, I'll try to treat them better and share this video to my family.
true
¹Q
Is she a siamese ?
"mobile can opener" 😂 I love you
My cat screams at me to look at her as she tries to knock anything over while staring me dead in the eyes as I repeatedly say 'no' at different octaves, hoping one works, as I watch desperately to get her to not knock over literally anything
All sounds good but one glaring part. "never repeats her transgression." If this were literally true she must be a "Godly and intelligent kitty" far above and beyond what anyone has ever experienced.....lol!
If you treat your cats with kindness and respect they will treat you the same!
Tooo bad it won’t work with teenagers.

This is honestly true. Only mean cats come from a household that have done them wrong which is pretty sad 😔

Yeah, and the best case is when your cat may trust you.
Ong
I think what they're trying to say is, the cat doesn't know what they are being punished for unless its done within around 2 seconds after the unwanted behavior. After that it just scares and confuses them and if you keep doing it they will start to hate being around the big scary human -
They don't know what they are doing is wrong they are just afraid of you and have learned to identify your aggressive body language.
why is she avoiding??
Hey 😊
I was a nurse in an animal hospital and I can tell you that one of the most common injuries are cats falling out of highrise windows. A cat can die from a 3 story fall.
😢😢😢
Oh my! My cat often jumps off his stand but from a balcony is so scary!!! Poor little cats!
My kitten fell out the window and I'm on the 3rd floor. 🥺 luckily she landed on mud nd grass and I checked whole body she was fine.
Cats can also survive a fall 3 times that high.
Yes they certainly aren’t immune from accidents. No one should assume their cat is safe on edges of balconies, staircase bannisters, etc.

I miss him.

They're not all right.
i agree everything else but the first one. you can change your cats diet anytime. a lot of cats may not like their new food yet, but they will, it only needs patience. start mixing the new food in the food your cat currently eats, and slowly start putting the new food more than the other, and slowly start to reduce the food your cat is used to eat. if your cat has kibbles available 24/7 that may also distract the cat for diet changing, surely they will realize you have mixed new food to the old one and just eats kibbles. when you give your cat their meal take the kibbles somewhere not reachable for your cat until they eat the food. if it doesn't seem to work, try taking them away whole actually, when they have kibbles all the time they probably are not that hungry to eat their meal. if your cat loves kibbles you can mix some of it to their meal too, or give the kibbles back when your cat gets used to their new diet. for some cats changing a diet might take a long time, but patience is the key, don't give up :)
Idk if this comment was necessary but i wanted to share it
sorry for my bad english :)
So true, you do have to discipline them. A water pistol was something my great uncle used to swear by when he was alive.
@@mikeb53 Yeah and they quickly learn. After a while all you need to do is shake the water pistol and they know what's next if they don't stop digging the couch, climbing the blinds or eating a plastic bag ... WHYYYY do my cats want to eat plastic! I don't get that one.

Great information of how responsible owners may interact with their cats, many thanks for posting ....
when i tell my cat no for doing wrong he looks at me with sad eyes ,,then looks at me with crazy eyes and does it again lol
😂
OMG this is so my cat 🤣😂
I have my OWN cat and these videos are helpful on how I can be a better owner. :)
My cats a street cat n I got them 4 months ago and they do nothing. They’re old n I try to engage with them but they rather sleep n eat. They don’t even cuddle. Idk wat to do but I do try to give them love.
Pretty much anything and everything can harm them , but I love them 💖
One of my cats (former "stray" for a number of years prior) thinks of vomiting as a competitive sport.
Cheddar Goblin 🤣 that's not a reference I hear often.
I had a cat that used to be sick quite often in could be the brand of food now on royal canin sensitive hasnt been sick since 😅
Every day is a learning day for me, learning new information on our beloved kitty.
Nah I have a seresto collar on my cat. He’s good
cats really are the best pets if you put in the effort
They don’t know what they did wrong when you punish them, but they DO know what they did right when you reward them? That’s some BS right there
My cat knows she’s not allowed on the table so whenever she’s on the table and we walk in she immediately walks off with a guilty look. 😂🐱
Same here! My Fur Baby knows she's not allowed on the Dinner Table or Kitchen Counters...we do not have any issues with that..I say Get Down and she jumps off the 1st and only time I tell her to....lol
Same I was once sitting in the kitchen and I left for a second and when I came back she was on the table eating my pasta so I snuck behind her since she was busy snacking and I just said
"What are you doing?"
And she just JUMPED off the table since I scared her so much 😭😭
@@24-_Kai I’m always scaring my cat on purpose because she so funny. She’ll be looking at me and I scare her, and she freaks out. 😂
@@Sweetkpop1209 You shouldn't scare your cat on purpose often it can stress them and they will come aggressive towards you.

THANK YOU 🙏🏼 I'M A NEW KITTEN OWNER. ( TUXEDO KITTEN ) 🥰 THIS VIDEO IS VERY HELPFUL 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank-you for the cat understanding!! So much we need to learn!!
Judging by the top comments on this vid I don't think people want to learn.
"Because cats don't understand that certain behaviours are undesirable..."
That's simply NOT true.
It isnt that cats have no past memory but one shouldnt expect a cat to know what they are in trouble for when it happened earlier.
@@tanyabrown9839 they know the word 'no' though. My cat responds to that . She'll do a body swerve & pretend she wasn't going to claw the sofa if I catch her early enough 😁
Come on, cats have an INCREDIBLE memory!
He knew he had done wrong.( it really hurt)
10 minutes later he was back....wanting to be petted, he was so loving ❤.
How can you be cross with them...
I have started to turn my back on him now when I say No..seems to work.🤞🤞
I have a persian and he is sooo intelligent he knows when he can misbehave and when he needs to be on his best behavior 😂 trying new foods is not his thing. He knows when im upset so i get hugs from him .Sometimes he doesnt want to be touched but most times he luvs being with us in our bed or sitting with us on the dinner table but he won't eat anything we eat😂 luvs his treats 😅 grooming him is a must and vet check ups is a must
I wish there were people who cared about me as much as this man cares about animals...
My cat is 12 and has always been scared. My parents were very private people and I adopted her when they died. I try to spoil her as much as I can and leave her be cause it's what she wants.
I don't do a thing to scare her.
It’s ok some cats are just too careful
same here. Our cat has always been fearful and scared of everything and everyone! We do our best to soothe him and let him be.
Exact same and mine is 18. Some cats just chuck up.
The suggar is really not good for the cat
TUNA IS BAD FOR CATS. THEY CAN BECOME ADDICTED.
I actually heard it from the channel who made this video.
We grow up with cats in our lives, and realize there are still things to learn about them!
This was spot on with good tips. I’ve been guilty of some of these.
I think switching only makes for a finicky cat , not that cat's need any help in that department.
truee, my cat also same like yours. they can't change their food, even if they like it, they will have diarrhea and his poop will bleeding
@@SYFPARK98 If your cat is having bloody bowel movements, I hope you get it to a vet ASAP. There is more going on than not liking the food.
I tell my cat "No" and point my finger at her when she does something wrong. As soon as it happens. I keep my voice firm.
The only snag I hit here was the teeth brushing. I would consider my cat to be extremely well behaved and excercises regularly :)
Doing nothing or only rewarding good behavior doesn't work.
great video. thank you for drawing attention to the cat problems!

Made the mistake of NOT asking my vet how much it cost to get my cat's teeth cleaned. Went to pick him up. $500! Canceled my dentist visit to get MY teeth cleaned until I could financially recover from that vet bill.
Omg, that is insane!
@@Kyvach I thought so too!

@@overcatter7647 I give them those. He's just old and they didn't quit do the job.
These were all educational, rational and well balanced and animated. Good job :)
In short: at least in relation to relationship: Treat your cat like you would want to be treated if you were a cat.
I don't even get mad at my cat for scratching me I'm practically Jackson Galaxy on that end lol
I never get mad at my cat BUT he absolutely knows when he’s being bad 😂
I'm just so grateful that my cats allow me to live in their house.
In appreciation for that I agree to pay the bills and buy the food.
I've had cats all my life and am still learning things every day
@@LMCSM exactly. Most people I know don't like cats, but then after further questioning, find out they're just awful with pets. Felines are special.
EXACTLY! People love to judge others on how they raise their fur babies
WHO PICKS UP THERE CAT AND IS LIKE "I'm sure you will be fine" AND DROPS THEM I THOUGHT THAT WAS COMMON SENSE NOT TO DO
Half of this video is absolute nonsense.
Thanks I'm getting a cat soon so this was very helpful and informative ❤️
no cat
#1 thing cat doesn't like is change
I ❤️ my cat so much! Thanks 💯
This was informative. Thank you.
Kitty knows EXACTLY what I’m saying, all the time. And I know what she is saying….her stare tells me everything.
Cats do know when they do wrong and they do understand
It looks like many people disagree with the supposition that a cat does not know that, he or she has done something wrong. As a lifelong cat parent, I agree with all of you.
