    So glad hamsters are finally getting the love they deserve! Hamsters need a lot more than people think. In fact, those terrible small barred cages that most pet stores sell are actually illegal in some countries because they're so inhumane! Wish some people would do a little more research before buying "fast food pets," like hamsters.

      I like it too - parents and kids don't understand what hamsters are really like store bought. And that the cages they sell at stores are generally junk toys to appeal to kids and far too small. Bin cages is what everyone has been chanting for years. Lots of cheap ways to make a cage. In other words, the animals are just there to sell the stores stuff for them, they make very little off selling actual hamsters. Not exactly their fault they don't know - everyone just assumes its normal and fine.
      I'd say the Syrian shown running needs a bigger wheel, maybe since its back is so arched, but maybe its fine. But anything with bars or holes are a no no. I don't even like bar cages cause Syrians and stressed hamsters chew them, which isn't good for them. My dwarf winter white Buddy (His name was Wyn but I kept calling him Buddy) likes about 4 inches of bedding, and will pile up and move it if he wants it higher somewhere to let me know. He likes it at all different kinds of heights. Busy boy.

    Wow, this is a well researched video! Great job! ❤ I would not expect this from a channel that isn't about hamsters or pets. There are small inaccuracies here and there not directly related to the list but all of the things you've pointed out are correct. I would just add two more things, a wheel of wrong size and type, and a hamster ball. A small wheel bends their spine in a U shape and can lead to permanent damage and a wire or mesh wheel can break their leg or foot. A hamster ball is stressful, has poor ventilation and often can break their foot. They should never ever be used.

    The video is pretty good but it's...
    IMPORTANT to point out that the wheels that are visible in this video are bad, even deadly dangerous. The wheel at 5:48 is way too small, the hamster's spine is bending upwards causing pain and with time deformation which leads to chronic pain and injuries that cannot be restored. The wheels that do not have full running surface can break legs easily and the hamster cannot run freely it has to concentrate to step on the bars. Wheels that are ridged and have a stand on both sides can even break the hamsters' spine.
    Always use wheels like getzoo's cork wheels. :) (I'm not advertising, just good wheels as reference.) (We use Glirex wheels btw, in Hungary.)

    That's a great video about hamsters! I was suprised to see so much correct information! :D
    I would like to add some things tho:
    - a hamster's cage should be at least 100x50cm (40x20 inches) big
    - when buying a wheel it's impotant to buy one with a closed running surface. Also don't buy a wheel which could get your hamster trapped! Also the size matters: Make sure your hamster's back doesn't have to bent while they're running
    - don't place your hamster on grids. It's hurthing their feet over time
    - a good diet doesn't only consist of grains. Hamsters also need protein (mealworms, shrimps, eggs, yogurt) and veggies (no fruits for dwarf hamsters tho)
    - hamster balls are NOT a good toy. Your hamster freaks out in them because he can't see properly and he's constantly bumping into things, which is very scary for them
    - hamsters need access to a large playpen for at least an hour every day. Not every hamster enjoys it tho, so keep an eye on them and don't force them if they look to scared. If they DO like the playpen tho it's a great way to introduce them to new toys every now and then. Or just sit down and be a big toy yourself. :D

    @yumiro0102 2 года назад +6

    Pleasantly surprised to see how well researched this video was!
    Some things I'd like to be added (feel free to ask questions!);
    - Syrian (golden) hamsters need to live solitary and NEVER in pairs or groups, as they will fight to death. This includes siblings of the same sex, they cannot live together.
    BUT, dwarf hamsters (campbell, winter white/djungarian, and roborovskis) need to live with a partner. Campbell and winter whites are recommended to live in groups of 2-3 (in some countries, you need to house at least 2 together by law) while roborovskis can live in groups. Some recommend at least 3-4 robos housed together but 2 is the bare minimum. They've very social animals in the wild compared to their bigger cousin.
    - A lot of people separate dwarves as soon as they see them fighting; most hamsters play-fight or argue over things like food or the wheel. As long as no one is injured, this is harmless. If you see your hamsters fight, don't interfere. You need to let them solve it on their own so they reach a conclusion and don't build up aggression that escalates later. They might squeak when they fight but unless there's serious injury, it's the same as siblings yelling at each other.
    To minimise fights, have 2 of each item (2 wheels, 2 water bottles, 2 houses, etc) and if one steals food too often from the other, feed them at different ends of the cage. Also spot clean any place you see them scent mark to remove territorial behaviour if one acts too dominant over the other. Hamsters don't pee to mark territory, they use their scent glands that are placed on their hip joints (syrian) or on their lower abdomen/tummy (dwarf). Like cats, they rub these against things to mark it.
    - Recommended hamster wheel sizes and types; mesh types are NEVER recommended, their toes or feet can get stuck in the holes and break off. They need to be at least 21cm (8") for dwarf hamsters and at least 30cm (12") for syrian hamsters.
    - Absolutely NO HAMSTER BALLS! Hamsters are curious by nature, them entering a ball willingly does not mean they like it or that it's safe for them. Just because a hamster walks into a fridge doesn't mean they want to or should be in there either, right? Hamster balls have way too little ventilation for them to comfortably breathe in and the holes it does have have the same danger as mesh wheels do; their limbs can get stuck and break off. They also have no control over being locked inside it or let out so it's extremely stressful for them.
    - Food! Hamsters are omnivores and eat animal protein (boiled chicken, boiled eggs, mealworms), seeds, vegetables (fresh or boiled), dried herbs and flowers, nuts, baby food (look up which ones are safe and avoid anything with salt, pepper/spices and sugar). Mealworms and eggs are highly recommended for their necessary protein intake.
    Avoid anything with sugar, especially fruit. Only syrian hamsters can eat fruits (in minimal amount, maybe as a treat once a week) while dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes and should avoid sugary treats. Campbells especially are at higher risk of diabetes, this is why you should always buy from a breeder so you know they come from healthy lines.
    Hay is not recommended! Since hamsters stuff their cheek pouches, you need to make sure the food you provide them is safe for them to put in their cheeks. Hay is long and sharp and can punch holes in their cheeks. Same with pasta, they can eat things like pasta but be careful with sharp ones like spaghetti. I rarely give mine pasta but if I do, I break it down and run it under some water so it's a bit soft. I also give mine baby food but you need to do careful research on which ones are safe for them.
    Be careful what you feed them too much of, things like nuts and sunflower seeds has too much fat in it so it should only be given in minimal amounts.
    NEVER GIVE SALT/MINERAL STONES!
    Avoid berries and citrus fruit, they can eat boiled potato but not raw.
    ALMOND IS NOT A NUT AND IS TOXIC FOR HAMSTERS, it's a type of fruit but it's not safe for syrians to eat either.
    - Give them safe toys (untreated wood) and branches (apple, pear, willow) to chew on. Pine, cedar, yew and oleander are toxic.
    Hamster teeth grow their entire life, they need chewing toys to maintain them.
    Their claws also always grow and should never be cut unless absolutely necessary. Place rocks in their cage in places you know they walk and they'll keep them short naturally (aquarium ones or from outside that have been boiled first).
    They might live a short life but they're absolutely wonderful pets and give you 10x more love back from what they receive. Keeping them healthy and safe is the road to a long and loving life with your little furball! 😊💕
    Also avoid cages with bars, they will try to climb them and get hurt. They're not monkeys, they should not climb. Some hamsters end up breaking their back of teeth when climbing and chewing on bars.
    Aquariums or big enough bins are better than what they sell at pet stores. IKEA has two great options for much cheaper than what the pet store offers;
    DETOLF - if you want something BIG that works like an aquarium, this is the #1 cage any hamster owner will recommend.
    SAMLA - if you prefer a bin (I use this) then the 130 litre one is perfect in both size and cost. It has wheels so you can move it around if you keep it on the floor, I don't use a lid on mine but if you want to you can google "hamster samla" to see how people make easy diy lids.

      Uhm.. That's not entirely true. Dwarf hamsters prefer a life in solitude too, just like gold hamsters. Sometimes letting them grow up with some family members CAN work out, but it will most likely lead to fights later on. :(
      Everything else is correct tho. I'm always so happy to see people who actually know their stuff about hamsters! :D Do you have hamsters right now? :)

    • @yumiro0102
      @yumiro0102 Год назад +1

      @@Sabishi1985 Yes I've had syrians and winter whites and currently have two roborovskis! What you say about dwarf hamsters not always being able to live together is also true, I had to separate my current ones when their play fighting started to cross the border from play to serious.
      But in a lot of countries dwarf hamsters are still by law required to live in at least pairs, robovoskis especially prefer groups and do live so in the wild. But not all hamsters are the same, some dwarves prefer to live in solitude and are much happier that way (like my current robos) while others thrive in company. Hamsters can also experience grief from losing their cage partner, my last winter white was so depressed after losing his brother that it lead to his death... He was still very cuddly and sweet, ate and drank as he should, but his behaviour changed after losing his brother. He wouldn't even sleep in their house anymore even after I cleaned it. They would fight like any siblings, but they always slept together, groomed each other and played together.

    Things about hamsters:
    1: Do not let hamsters go in water or do not take a bath for them because it can be sick and die.
    2: Do not let them stay in a hot area. Like in front of the window, or where it can be sunny.
    3: Do not feed them human seasoned food such as pizza, spaghetti etc.
    4: Do not put them is cages made with metal, they will climb on the bars, or even bite the bars and it is way to little place for hamsters, cuz their natural behavior is digging.
    5: Just listen to all these for ur hamster's health! ♡

    Aaah thank you for this video! 🤩 always glad to see channels sharing proper hamster care, since there's so much misinformations out there sometimes! Hopefully this will help future or current hamster owners 😊
    I'd also just add that the wheel at 5:48 is way too small (you can tell because of the hammie's back being curved, which will cause health problems!)
    The wheel in the animation shown right after is also not good, but this time because it is a wired one (which hurts the hammy's feet, and can injure them if caught in the wires 😱)
    So the best wheel is one that is full (aka not wired or meshed) & That has a diameter of around 30cm (12inch) for a syrian hamster, or around 20cm (8inch) for a dwarf hamster! :D
    Oh and the enclosure/cage would be at least 100×50cm in size (which is around 39×19inch I think? 🤔)
    I mean it's not the minimum in every countries, of course, but from what I've learned and seen, I personally think it's a good minimum size! ^^ (I bought a second-hand glass cage/tank with these dimensions for very cheap! There's also big cages DIYs on youtube! So yeah, hope that helps!)
    ((I also made a playlist of hamster care & infos, with videos from Victoria Raechel, SomethingAnimal, Munchie's Place, etc 👀 which I recommend their content if you love hamsters and other pets, or want to learn more! 🐹🧡))

Of course you have to put your hamster in a car when they need a vet or you put them in their home you have build fot them but that's the only exception to held them in your car.

    5:48 The wheel must not be smaller than 28 cm, it cannot have a scissor effect, it cannot have a grid tread! Important: those who do not have enough money to give them everything they need should not keep a pet! If you get sick, the exotic vet is expensive too! If there is a poor pet in a small place, in bad conditions, then it is like a prison for him, he will only suffer all his life! If you mistreat your pet, you are an animal abuser!

    It seems the more i give him room the more he gets scared, I’m wondering if putting him in a smaller cage next to my bed will get him to bond better as the current one is super huge with multiple hideouts. It seems the closer the enclosure is to his habitat, the more he regresses to old wild/instinctive ways. Before when i first got him with the small cage from the petshop he wasnt as skittish. I’ve also tried rarely visiting him to give some sunflower seeds and all he does is run away into the hideout. If i go in with food he will snatch it and run off to eat it in his hole, or if I go in without food he will just bite me. It has been over a month now and he is a winter white. How often must you do the bathtub bonding process for him to feel safe?? And do you have to keep it up every few days or so? He seems to forget and goes back to being scared if I dont bring him out often enough

      Hmm if he is so afraid than maybe I would start with you voice and you scent. You could talk to the hamster or read it something so he get used to your voice. then you could put some toilet paper with your smell in the enclosure. Otherwise you shouldn't chase it either, just put your hand in the enclosure with something to eat and wait patiently for the hamster to come towards you. Maybe your hamster had a bad experience before it came to you, which is why he's so scared. there are some who will never lose their fear or their shyness, in which case you just have to accept it.

      A big enclosure is definitely not the problem the minimum I’m 450 square space. A full enclosure is necessary tho! A lot of hide outs, branches, tunnels are really good for your hammy since they are a prey animal, they are stressed in big open spaces but love big crowded spaces where they can walk under, in between and over.

    We got our hamster way too young at a terrible petshop in Turkey, I had prepared everything, done research and wanted to give it the perfect life but once I got the hamster it was so young it still had it’s eyes closed. It was eating a little solid food but I looked online more and realized it’d had to be fed milk for maybe at least 2 weeks, so I got formula and started handfeeding it every 3 hours. It seems to be doing well (physically) but I feel terrible having to get it from it’s comfy warm hole in the cage every 3 hours and it doesn’t seem to enjoy the feeding process at all. It does let me know it wants it by licking my hand but at the same time it seems to not understand the drinking process well and I’m still very worried for it’s life. I try to put solid foods it can eat in the milk in order for him to get it more (like dipping a broccoli in the milk) besides dripping the milk onto it’s mouth. I hope I’m doing it right, I hope it’ll be able to develop and become a healthy adult hamster.. It’s hair seems to be growing fast and it’s slightly growing in size but it still doesn’t seem to be figuring out the water bottle and hasn’t opened it’s eyes yet.. If anybody has any tips for me on what else I can do, please let me know.

    Also! Do not put your hamster in water because they can result into a drown and dying. And don't put your hamsters in high air or result into a: concussion, brain damage, broken bone, and such as others. Holding your hamster in high air is bad because they will jump/hop off. Also I share my hamsters cage but they both like eachother.
