- DEAR CVP's!
TODAY I got bitten my my 15 year old Rescue Blue and Gold Macaw Charlie.
I got him Dec 2022.
This is the first time he bit me. Exotic pet injury.
Macaw or Bird bites are really serious. What to do if a bird bites you?
CHARLIE BITE MY LIP! Painful Macaw bite and his reaction after the bite
Bites from exotic pets, like parrots, have resulted in thousands of injuries and hospitalizations. Bird owners are just as responsible for taking precautions to prevent attacks as dog and cat owners are in protecting others from injuries. You may be eligible for compensation from a negligent pet owner, so this information should not replace the advice of a lawyer.
Injuries from exotic pets present a novel challenge to health services. Between 2004 and2010, the National Health Service in England alone saw 760 consultations, 709 admissions and 2,121 hospital days as a result of exotic pet injuries [4]. Parrots, with colourful plumes and charming vocal abilities, are desirable pets. Such birds however can carry a wide spectrum of zoonoses which can be transmitted to humans. These illnesses may manifest with flu-like or respiratory symptoms (i.e. psittacosis), gastrointestinal symptoms (i.e. salmonellosis) or cutaneous symptoms (i.e. pasteurellosis), but not all are caused by bites that penetrate the skin. Unrelated skin trauma may also provide a route for nonbite-transmitted zoonoses if animals have been handled or hand hygiene is poor. The ability of an organism to cause illness depends on factors, including the route and level of exposure to the organism, the virulence of the strain and its ability to initiate the host’s immune response.
The transmission of saliva and other wound detritus of parrots through broken skin can cause significant illness if left untreated. Psittacosis-known also as chlamydiosis, parrot fever and ornithosis-is caused by Clamydophilia psittaci which has an incidence of 40 % in all birds [2]. Found in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts of parrots, transmission is most common through bites. Humans present with an atypical pneumonia with systemic malaise, and long-term sequalae include myocarditis and meningoencephalitis. Tetracyclines are the mainstay of treatment for both parrots and humans, but chloramphenicol or erythromycin are valid alternatives where tetracyclines are contraindicated. Pasteurella multocida, isolated from the nasopharynx of parrots, causes pasteurellosis and can be transmitted through bites or respiratory droplets. Systemic malaise may ensure if untreated and antibiotic treatment options include amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, doxycycline, amoxicillin or quinolones. Nontuberculous mycobacteriosis, resulting from Mycobacterium avium, is transmitted through talons, beaks and claws [1]. Most infections are asymptomatic but treatment includes macrolides, ethambutol and rifambutin. Other zoonoses, including Cryptococcus, erysipeloid and Newcastle disease are found in soil contaminated with infectious faeces. In the presence of broken skin, these can cause localized and systemic infections. Treatment for erysipeloid is with penicillin or erythromycin; for Cryptococcus, fluconazole is first-line.

Aww so sorry I can only imagine how bad this hurt you. I have so much love & respect for you as you take amazing care & give so much love to all your babies. It’s no easy task and so much time and devotion for these wonderful parrots 🦜 Love your channel ❤😊 Hope your lip is healing & doing much better.
Please keep us informed as to how you are doing. My sister wanted me to go to the ER when my parrot bit the tip of my finger, she thought it might need stitches. I didn’t go, I used New Skin and it sealed up real good you can’t even see a scar. Their lower mandible is sharp like a razor, that was what the bite was like.
Hope your lip will be okay soon. That looked really painful. So sorry for you! 😢🙏❤️
Oh Carolin I am soooo sorry to see this- it is every bird owners fear! We trust them and want to love them so much. I can only imagine how much that hurt and I am impressed with your ability to not get angry with Charlie. Not everyone would be so understanding and accepting, and I guess that's why there are so many rescues.....
absolutely. You are right. It was my fault. I shouldn't have tried to kiss him
You're so right I've never seen her get angry at her birds. Caroline is such a sweet natured person, that's why I enjoy watching her video so much. She seems to be a real sweetheart.
@CarolinvonPetzholdt I just had the same thing happen to me by my double yellow headed Amazon. I bent over a little bit and he lunged a grabbed my lip. Boy did it hurt!!!
Darn!! Hope you heal up quickly!!
Omg , I had gotten bit by Maximus in the hand and I think my feelings got hurt more than the bite! You should go get it checked out just in case, I try not to get in his face until I read his body language and always keep an eye on his eyes as well! So I can read his mood's. I hope you feel better soon, put some ice on your lip it will take the swelling down
You need ice quickly for the swelling. I like how Love and Hope felt your pain. Hope looked like he was mad at Charlie, when he flew on his cage.
awwwe... he seems like he feels bad. 🥺 you were so good telling him it's okay. ❤️🩹 they all care about you so much! 🥲💞 but holy crap, that must have hurt SO BAD!! birds are very unpredictable - especially rescues. you never know what happened to the poor babies.
Wow, take care of yourself. I bought two beautiful conures. Love them both 💗
aww. Congratulations
Feel better soon!
You are great with those birds but you should have seen he was heightened it shows in you video, but I'm sorry for your pain been there
Thank you, I will
sending a hug xx
OMG Carolin, I am so sorry for you❣️😔 Love and Hopie would NEVER do that!!
That's right.
Oh no Carolin! I’m so sorry! 😘❤️❤️❤️❤️☀️💙
❤️❤️❤️
Wow Carolin, that is a nasty bite. Be careful for infection. I think you better take some antibiotics. I hope that it wont become a scar. Love wanted to comfort you, and so did Hope. I hope it will heal fast, but because you must eat and drink, it could take a while. Maybe you better take some painpills too for the worst pain. I wish you the best, till the next vid.❤😮
Thank you so much Adrie xo
Put a ice cube on it for the swelling ,I love your channel been watching for a long time ,really love your birds ,hope it heals quickly
Thanks for the tip. yes
🥺 I'm so sad for you Carolin. Put ice for the swelling cause that is so badly swollen. I'm so sorry this happen to you.
God bless you i hope you feel better ):
2:08 when the macaw party goes hard 🎉
Hes like oh mom, I need to see your face. You got a boo boo, let me help.
I hope you feel better
Wow. I hope you're ok.
Hope you're OK❤
yes. I am ok
That bird really nailed you, good.
yep
This is why I'm a bit scared to ever get big parakeets😅
Ouch! Oh Darlin, I’d have that checked by an MD, if I were you...Preferably a plastic surgeon! (There is usually one “on call” in the ER). Such a bad spot & on your face! You’re much to pretty to let this go. Remember, there are weird bacteria & viruses these days. With something like that, you can’t be too careful?. ❤️💋💕🙏🧑⚕️⛑
the sequel to charlie bit my finger
lol. right!
i hope you feel better soon , but I don't have a bird because I only have my own cat
Go to the ER tomorrow if you haven't already; my brother got bit by a cat last year and the infection set in very quickly. You may need stronger antibiotics than what you can get over the counter. Ask them if it's ok to put lidocaine on the wound for pain relief. You could also try vaseline though that won't help with the pain. In the short term - tylenol. There's a lot of blood in the lip area, so when you get wounded there it looks scarier than it may be. The folks at Urgent Care will also tell you if it's better to cover the wound or leave it open to the air to heal. It's sometimes not a good idea to make any life decisions (about rescues or anything else) while you're in so much pain. Hope you feel better. It may get worse before it gets better, but it will get better.
How tragic. Very very sad
all is good
Birds don't realize that our beaks (lips) are soft, fleshy and bleed.
yep
fun and games at hormonal/moulting season your not alone lol
Aww I’m sorry that happened to you. I had an Amazon and she bit me through my bottom lip because I stupidly thought I could kiss her randomly. I didn’t know about body language or how fast that big birds like her can nail a bite! Needless to say, I didn’t try to kiss her from then on. Lol
I will never kiss him from now on either :(
I would hold ice on a bite like that to reduce swelling and pain. You can use a bag of frozen veges wrapped in a small towel. And take some ibuprophen for pain and swelling ( Advil)
My DYH Amazon named Charlie has bit me hard too, Ouch... So sorry that happened.
PSI bite strength more than a Rottweiler.
That does suck, any of our birds can do that at any time. We just need to be aware of those risks. With a new rescue, you can help to prevent by having your hand there to control the beak's movement, but you know all this already. Hopefully you will feel better soon. Go back and watch your video if you recorded it....I saw a warning sign if you cut off the video to us just before he bit.
Omg sorry that happened to you you should put ice for the swelling.
I saw he was moving back and forward and bouncing which meant yo back off.
especially when he was eating, but try to not kiss them too much or put them in your shoulder since being higher than you means more control and easy for them to bite..
I had that to one time it is when the bird is to enthusiastic about the situation or hormonial.
Vitamin E gel capsules to lessen scaring
Hugs 🫂💗
Are you okay?
I got bitten under my nose by my harlequin, it’s so painful. You are going to look like had bad lip fillers in the next few days. Hope you heal well, took me 2 weeks and 5 months later I’ve no scar
yes. I look like a bird with a beak. lol. Look at my Instagram pic
Clean it Put ice and take turmeric - natural anti inflammatory and like someone already said above vitamin E gel for scarring
Oh shit! He got u really good. Be careful w/the Fr
Yes. Really hurts
What are u doing turning your house into jurassic Park?
My macaw bit my lip really bad last year… worse then that. I had to get stitches. Looks like you’ll be ok, you won’t need any. Just keep it clean, add bio oil once it’s closed up to help with the scaring.
There’s little scarring. But no stitches
Now imagine the pain of the lorikeet :(
I won’t follow you anymore … it hurts so much to see the lorikeet in pain
This is why I never get my face Close to any pets, or ANYTHING!!
Put ice on it to reduce swelling and pain.
Charlie bit me! 😂
Sorry this happened, it could of been your eye!! Please don't beat him, he's just a baby and doesn't have the sense to know better. Just keep him at a distance from now on
Omg, what in the world would possess you to put your face any where near that birds face. That bird was showing signs of aggression already.
think you need a bigger house with how many birds you have
I had me Catalina bite my bottom lip when I took him off of a man that loved a big tall guy I think ita just that he wanted to say o the Counter with the food and you moved him. we all are a bit crazy because I still love him❤😂
I’m sorry that happened, today I went to birds exotic I got bit by blue and gold macaw, she bit me so hard I ran away! She was 9 months old. She had a sister, she was a Scarlet macaw, she was more aggressive!
wow
What is the brown stuff
Blood
@@CarolinvonPetzholdt okay
I really want a harlequin macaw , but because I have a small child I’m waiting for him to get older , just incase they bite him
Smart move. Also don’t get a rescue. Get a baby that you can train mold and form.
@@CarolinvonPetzholdt 👍defo ,
Hi my rescue parrot when first got her bit my lip where your parrot bit you I have nice scare 9 years later
Ausch
Dang
It almost looks like a dog bite. For something without teeth their bites do damage.
Imagine if the macaw bite her eyeball🥴
Why don't try getting the right size cage for your birds
???
Well there's a scar, but aye that was just a love tap. That bird coulda torn ur lip right off if it wanted to.
Carolyn, I don't understand why you allow your parrots to openly have access to the kitchen 🤔 one of them could seriously get hurt...even death. We can heal from bites but I worry about birds or any animal in the kitchen.
I also hope you heal quickly and left with no scars...💜😍🙏
They don’t. They broke out of the bird room which is next to the kitchen.
@Carolin von Petzholdt they are too smart! They go where they are not supposed to...my Umbrella is the same, he gets into my electronics and chews them up. His room is far from the kitchen! He just chews chargers and also gets into cat food! 😍💜
You should really get that checked out right now Carolin. Get help
I am ok.
Are you German? Because you Sound German. 😂 ( I'm German too ).
yep
I hope you went to ER? You need stitches and pain pills and antibiotics. I sent up some Prayer's for you. I am sorry Charlie bite you. 😭 😢 💔 🐦 Are you doing ok? 🤗 💜 Ice in a towel may help. Do you have Neosporin? Please let us know how you are. Feel sad for you. I wish l was with you. ❤️ 😭 🤗
I’m feeling much better. Lip is healing fast
@@CarolinvonPetzholdt
I am very happy l found you!!!! You are all adorable! Your amazing with all of your Best friend's!!!! ❤️ 🐦 🤗 😁
Deformed scar...for life
👎 👎 😩 🐦
This is the reason I will never get a macaw they are dangerous 🤣🤣😵
if my parrot bit me like that , i would ship him off to colonel sanders and turn him into drum sticks ....
My umbrella cockatoo named Rico literally rip my top lip in half just for kissing him then proceeded to scream and laugh with joy these mfs can be unspected even when you show them and had em for 11 years 😂😂 learned my lesson just expect the unexpected. My shit was was numb for like 2months
My DYH Amazon would do that. So I don’t kiss him anymore. As a baby he was fine with kisses. Now I don’t trust him
