I love how you don't shy away from failure. It's actually amazing to watch. You put in so much time and effort and we can see the pain and disappointment on your face when a bow project breaks, but you shake yourself off, do your best to identify what went wrong, and move on to the next thing. Truly inspirational!
What about a wooden hockey stick? I could see that being able to work without having any crazy surprises.
Wooden hockey stick bow with a fiberglass hockey stick baking!
Could you try using something like what you made with the first hockey stick (the real flimsy thing you bent in a circle) as a bow backing on wood?
Scuff the inside to give the glue something to adhere to maybe
Could try pvc cement
I think that strips of that hockey stick composite glue laminated to bamboo would make an excellent bow.
Ive played hockey for 13 years of my life, and the sticks you received were on the older end of composite sticks, I have a few broken newer ones I can send you so you can have a better results if you'd like!
appreciated if u can send it to INDIA...will pay the charges
I just snapped the first bow I tried to make today such a gutting feeling. But I have already started glueing a handle on my now second bow I hope this one bows!!
Did it???
Did it work out?
I think it's your positive attitude and perseverance past failure that makes these videos so fun to watch. I know how much time and effort it takes to work on these 'will-it' projects and I feel the pain and disappointment every time you break a bow. Seeing you go back and try again is just awesome.
As a hockey fan, I love this idea! You could also have used the 1st bow to back another wooden bow, while maintaining the "hockey stick" look!
The first hockey stick would probably make a awesome backing for another bow!
I love your videos. The disappointment on our side is just as strong if it fails. Great videos broham! Keep it up
Damn your editing has made a lot of progression, nice work.
You are literally such an inspiration. Keep doing what you're doing! Please, for the sake of my mind right now during the pandemic, I need something to do. You inspired me to buy my second bow which will be a recurve bow. I'm a big fan of your work and your channel. I also tried to build my own bow which failed but the process was fun and rewarding. Please keep this up!
Back when we were kids my grandfather would get us to go around and pick up old hockey sticks from the rinks in the area. I think they were made out of hickory. Then he showed us how to make bows out of them. Add a handle and taught us how to tiller, make bow strings and arrows. They were a great little bow. We hunted rabbits and partridge, did some bow fishing and had a 3 d coarse back before they were popular. I still have one of my old bows. get it out and shoot it now and then. What a great idea my grandfather came up with.
I can already tell this one is gonna be good. I’ve always wondered about this
I think the issue here is what known in mechanical engineering as "Stress Concentration".
Which is basically what happens when you have sharp corners or a sudden change in cross-section area.
Overlapping the pieces and making the transition smoother might fix that issue.
Soooo... The hockey stick, the way you dissected it... Makes a very interesting bow backing?
Since broken hockey sticks often are quite affordable... That's interesting.
actually surprised you didn't use a wooden hockey stick for this. good old Sherwood would probably make a decent bow.
Man you are amazing! Keep up the good work.
Your energy is amazing.
Awesome as always Kramer. We love your videos!
Not only are your vids educational. But the cinematography and editing is superb! Love the vids man, keep at it :)
Hey Kramer I love your show! It’s what got me interested in bow making several months back. I’m a paramedic, I bring the bow string jig I made to work sometimes now just to fill time between calls. Thanks for the helpful instructionals you gave me something for getting through quarantine
Ya .... Thanks for posting my comment on your channel... I saw the Easton and thought nope. Just being Canadian and knowing what its made of. But good thing you didn't get a fiberglass stick those split something fearce. A good wooden stick like a Sherwood might of been better. But I do love the build. And the reason for the wood in the blade is the Easton composite sticks were for changing your blade of the stick. Stay safe...
So close. Definitely worth another video with a triple or quadruple lamination of flat peices.
I feel like if you hadn't have been working with a lamination that had a weak spot where it had broken before it would have bowed.
Excellent video regardless, I started building bows at the start of lockdown and your channel has inspired me and informed me so much. Thank you for doing what you do.😊
How about cross country skis? Also I think it would be really fun to see you try to build a compound bow!
Great video, really liked this one ! Congrats on the 90k subs !
You should consider getting a hand plane for planing down wood, instead of using the belt sander. Planes are often much quicker and leave a great finish.
Hey Kramer,
I love your videos so much, and this series "will it bow" specially. You put so much afford in your work, in your bows and in your videos, i really appriciate it.
take care, and kee up the good work!
two thumbs up from Germany!
Greetz, Sascha
This build definitely needs a revisit!!! Hockey stick will bow... With a lil restructuring!
Love the idea of a leaf spring bow!!! Good thinking for the "wasted" materials.
I'd like to see you using steel ot other metals in the will it bow series :D
@@kramerammonsarchery , Forget aluminum it don't spring back. Steel is heavy. What about titanium?
@@GonogoBonobo We had aluminium bows in the 50s and 60s last century. One had to wear a cap or hat to prevent head injuries when they snapped! ... im getting old!
You are so good👍👍
Is there anyway I could enter to get a tab even though I don’t have social media?
Thank you so much!
I have made takedown bow limbs from composite skis before. The ski material looked similar to the hockey snick material.
Kramer Ammons Yes, yes you do. I too have murdered a band saw blade. Death by composite. Im pretty sure I will never break these limbs.
Maybe a bow backed with bowstring? Like a sinewbacked bow but instead of sinew you could use a roll of b55 or something.
I love 'Will it Bow' series!..thank u for making this vid.
Thank you for trying this. The hockey stick idea I was thinking about was the old style laminate wood. Interesting on how these sticks are changing. I think the laminate wood would have work better ? Maybe try again sometime?
This definetly needs a re visit in the future kramer! i think you can totally make a good fiberglass hockey stick bow with all the knowledge you got from this 2 attempts.
Very cool concept! I'm glad I found your channel. I've always enjoyed archery, but never had any of my own equipment. This is inspiring to make my own bow(s), so thank you very much!
Kinda odd you went with the carbon fiber twig first. Those sticks were designed to break easily (blame the 90's) and also to have major whip/play with them. What flex did you decide to use when you bought the stick? If it were me, I would have gone down three roads with this build. 1: use wood sticks, good old fashion Sherwood pmp 5030 twigs. 2: use two 100 carbon fiber twigs, cut the blades off till it looks like a butt end, flip them and make an adapter where the real butt ends meet and are glued/connected by that adapter. Now your major flex zones will be on the ends and the rigid section will be in the middle. 3: get your hands on pro-stock twigs. They have a higher tolerance than what mere mortals can get their hands on. Best bet to get your hands on them is to go to the the training rink of a major team, bribe the 'boni driver with a 12 pack and he will hand you a bucket of discarded sticks from the team. Oh and if you want to see something that will blow your mind, goof around with a carbon fiber goalie paddle, those are wicked. If you want to be really cruel...really really evil...Get an Aluminium hockey stick...
great vid! lots to think about. something that i thought of while you were making this is that the one hockey stick that was really flexible, i wonder how that would work by gluing that onto a wood bow (wooden hockey stick) much like how the raw hide strips functioned that you used on your other video?
Loved the video,i like how you trie everything before making your conclusion .
"Let's make this awesome" that should be youre tag line.
I wanna see a series called: 'Make it bow!' Where you finish these kinda projects that have real potential from the 'Will it bow?' series.
I love these keep doing them
Ahh but can you make a bow that fires hockey sticks? Lol
will it bow!!!!!! yeet
What about using that as a fiberglass backing on a board bow? Seems it’d make a decent backing.
always nice and brilliant video thanks!
I'd love to see medical gauze and resin as a backing, tested.
I reckon that material would make a brilliant backing, or even cut it out like you did the first one then make what would effectively be a wooden belly for it if you know what I mean
NEXT should be two fishing rods!
Thanks so much for the content, im just getting started with my first bow. I have a question, is it possible to apply a tip overlay straight on top of fiberglass tape? Or should it be wood to wood?
I don't know about a bow but I bet that's some pretty good backing material for a selfbow if glued correctly.
Love your show Kramer!! Super informative channel!
What about a wood bow with a hockey stick backing since the sticks is so flexible?
I really like both your perseverance and your ingenuity. This one didn’t work but your work ethic is dauntless. Looking forward to your next one. Are wooden hockey sticks in the mix?
please do another one laminated style, i think you got this 👌would be extra fun to watch if you finally make it work, best of luck, simon from slovenia
these videos are just preparing us for the zombie apocalypse that's inevitably coming this year.
You stay super positive even when it snaps just in awe of you dude much love
Question...
Consider each of two identical 'heavy flex' hockey sticks, to be your pair of limbs...
They flex as they are...
The handle and the blade were already reinforced...
So perhaps those are ready for a handle piece, and for nock tips...
Perhaps you have the pieces for a crazy warbow...
Next up is a ski. Look up diy takedown bow with a ski. Pretty awesome.
Good stuff though.
is it better to use a hotgun, melt it down like PVC bow making?
What about a hockey stick laminate? Like a shovel handle with a hockey stick back?
Next time on Will it bow series, you can use rattan Wood
I DON'T BELIEVE IT! Hey Kramer, I thought you'd choose WOODEN hockey sticks. Composite hockey Sticks? Just nothing to do with that. I have made a couple of bows with wooden hockey sticks, but never ever with composite. And you'll dul your bandsaw for sure; Iknow, I DID it. Anyway, let's get back to the video and see how you fare. GOOD LUCK my friend....(M.G.' Quebec, Canada)
Love your videos man!! I would really love to see you work bad staves tho.. yours was the first bow building vid I ever saw.. and I'm working on bows 2 and 3. The first was a board bow.. but there is something to cutting a tree down and using the wood. Except I'm in a city and have very less than ideal wood with knots and a bit of propeller twist(just a little). But I would love to see how u solve the problems I'm dealing with! Thankyou👍
I should have added the wood is from a shag bark hickory maybe 4 inches diameter. I'm going to keep trying to work thru it learning as I go just would like to see u work a piece of wood that is less than ideal. I'm working on getting better wood to season and work cheers
For bone tip overlays you could get cow bone from pet smart or from amazon
Lol I would not mind if you continued to try out hockey sticks but if you get the chance i bet making a bow out of yardsticks would be fun.
Thank you
Thanks for sharing this.. im trying to make one now.
I jumped when it snapped.. ugh.. so sad.
:)
When you make a bord bow normally about how thick are your bow limbs. I know there are plans for the dimensions on a prior video with the poplar but the end thickness was not mentioned. I'm just trying to get an idea of when it is thin enough to start putting a real string on for tillering because i have broken a few bows now when trying to put a real string on for the first. Time
I was wondering if one of those hockey sticks wood make a good backer.
Try "V" cutting the ends about 8-9 inches and close them. You will keep the sides intact but gradually decrease the mass. This is similar to using PVC. The material is strong if it's braced on all sides. You could have probably made a long bow by stringing up the stick
Just glued up my hickory backing to a piece of Ipe and a poplar handle. Here’s to hoping it’s SHATTERPROOF too!
I wonder if it would have been possible to make a it from two English hockey sticks. Perhaps you could have scarfed them together like the 'pallet bow'? I'm sure it would have been better timber than the wood from a pallet. They are commonly made from ash, mulberry or hickory.
TRY THIS AGAAAAAIIIIN !!!! I believe it will work! and also a wood one!
Use the first failed hockey stick bow to make backing for another bow?
You have the best fails on you tube,,,(meant as a compliment)
Make a bow out of school rulers!
A lot of umbrellas seem to have fiberglass ribs (well at least the high quality ones that cost like $18). I'm wondering if you can make a bundle bow with enough of those umbrella ribs
What about using that material as a backing?
At 17:07 I know that feeling all to well
Well, that's really interesting, and entertaining of course.
What about a series on making historical accurate bows from every part of the world, like yumi bow or Manchu bow, I know it's soo difficult to work with these materials but dang it it would be great
Could you use the hockey stick as a backing? I guess you'd have to find a way to glue that fiberglass stuff to wood...
What if you cut the second one like the first and slid them together was also thinking you could back it with fiberglass tape or bamboo or use the hockey sticks as backing for a bow just a couple of thoughts
I had an idea to use boards from Ikea's slatted bed base Luroy as limbs, but being complete rookie I wanted to gather some intel first. Maybe you could test this idea out?
Have u tried heat yo bend, say a full wing where the handle is square n doesn’t flex much around fades.
What do you do with all these weird bows that you make? And all the normal ones for that matter? I see that Shatterproof doesn't sell bows, just accessories.
You should make a funny bow building stereotype video, like Dude Perfect stereotypes. lol I'm going to nickname myself the suggestion person lol
@@kramerammonsarchery lol
Broke two greenwood bows today trying to make my first but I got two more staves to try again so I will tomorrow on the light of morn
I'm your fan, you're awesome
Wil leaf spring steal work as a metal bow can you please test it out woud love to see it
I wonder if u could use a sidevasca backing?
Hey kramer ,instead of a finger tab release...try using a archery thumb ring release....you will be impressed.....
Not only will the composite eat your saw blades, you really need to wear a respirator when cutting or sanding it. It's either going to be graphite, glass, or kevelar (or a combination of those). Very hard materials that are brutal to cutters, and that dust is all nasty for breathing.
Hi!
Nice video. Would it bow if you tried with the hollowed side facing away from you?
Ah yes. My two favorite sports: Hockey and Archery
hockery
Hockery
Just saying, if you took the 2nd bow at the point when you do the 1st stringing, cut a V groove at both tips and glued in siyahs, you'd get better performance. The wood handle section could even be extended and have thin wooden limbs going the entire ways across the inside walls, then cut the siyahs in the hockey stick and wooden limb. Then you'd just put a backing on the wooden limbs to act like sinew, the hockey stick would work like the horn, and of course the wooden handle with limbs being the bow blank. It a vague idea that just popped in my head i'm positive you could elaborate and work it out.
Edit: Upon more thinking I think the first bow would end up better than keeping the walls on. There has to be a taper or a different combo of materials to keeps the walls on there.
