I'm so happy you're actually reading through the books. They add a lot to the ages and the game as a whole. Most other LPs I've seen only glance at the lengths and say no.
Myst! I remember young me was stuck on the elevator forever, because I couldn't figure out that you need to close the door. it was a time before the internet, when children would spend their pocket money on hint books. my friend called a hotline that provided help for gamers who were stuck on a puzzle. I don't even remember if I really liked the game back then.
Oh the nostalgia.. I never finished it as a kid cause there being no people caused me to be paranoid and I constantly was scared to walk around every corner and have someone jump out and attack me 😅 even with my dad constantly reassuring me that’s not going to happen I still needed to play it when people were around to stop being so spooked 😅😂
The nostalgia - the original myst game was one of the first CD-Rom games we ever got (The 7th Guest was one of the others), played it as a family, had a simple wirebound notebook that we jotted everything down in, my mom even fully copied the text of the journals in the library down so we could easily reference it if anything was needed for any puzzles. We lost my mom a few years ago, and now that wirebound notebook with her handwritten notes of this game and the memories of us playing it together is something I treasure.
You have to realize this game rocked my imagination more than any other game... The original version... Back when CD-ROMs were a HUUUGE improvement in technology
Okay I’m writing this comment before actually watching the video, I’ve only just seen the poll results, and I have to express how happy it makes me to see all the love for this game. There were a lot of AAA games on that list! Seeing MYST, probably my second most favorite video game series of all time, triumph over all those other candidates... it literally almost brought a tear to my eye I’m very excited to see this though I will admit I wish he were playing the masterpiece edition of the original. I’ve never played Real MYST only because I don’t have a computer that can handle it. I’ve just got so much nostalgia for the original, probably too much if we’re being honest lol. This’ll be quite the journey!
I'm so happy this game won a popular vote made in 2017. Fun fake fact: They were going to name this game Tower Rotation III, but someone in development had the brilliant idea of changing it to Mountain Yielding Swivel Tower, or MYST for short.
wow, for some reason the atmosphere is so different! Granted I played Myst when I was 9 and while nothing too sinister happens it creeped me out. I expected the sounds to give me that feeling again but I think even the audio files have been changed compared to the original game
The original version of Myst, even though it was presented as more or less a glorified interactive slideshow, did have animations on many of the screens, which were powered by the then-brand new QuickTime software. All of them were, as you put it, postage-stamp-sized, even though most were on the somewhat-smaller-than-fullscreen* pictures, which was not immediately obvious (since they were seamlessly integrated into the pictures) but easily discernible if you paid attention. I'm not sure how much of that was due to the space limit on a CD-ROM-the QuickTime codec couldn't have been terribly efficient in its early versions-and much due to the limited processing speed of computers in 1993/94. You no doubt noticed the dramatic improvement to fullscreen videos for the sequel. The switch to DVD certainly helped with that, as did 4 years of improving processor speeds. * In the Windows version (not sure about other platforms), the game ran at 640×480, either in a window or fullscreen, with the pictures significantly matchboxed inside of that, and the rest filled with black. A simple interface for things like saving and loading were available by mousing around the top of the black space.
My sister and I first played Myst in 1995 or 96. Back then, you couldn't simply look up a walkthrough so games like this were a true test of your mental abilities. We both loved Myst and Riven so much that we ended up with a small collection of similar games like Shivers 1 and 2, Beyond Atlantis, Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time and The Crystal Key. Good stuff.
If the videos in the book were solely a result of technical limitations, that was probably a good thing, because as you know by now it was completely integrated with the setting :)
Holy crap that intro song made me go full on internet search ninja. For other i spare you the pain: Song name is, In the flame. Artist is Darren Korb fest, Ashley Barrett. Album Pyre (Original soundtrack). Love some help here so other people can find and read this. Now i can enjoy the play-true :=)

Playing RealMyst instead of regular Myst is a great choice, not necessarily because of the free movement, which is certainly a nice addition, but because the original Myst just looked like SHIT. Riven and Myst III and IV all use click-based movement, but they actually look good - gorgeous, in fact, especially Myst IV - while the original Myst just looked terrible visually, to the point of turning a lot of people off from even trying to play it. I'm especially looking forward to you playing Riven, which has the reputation of being the best Myst game for a reason.
Actually, for the time, Myst was an astoundingly good looking game. It was (I think) one of the first games available on this new-fangled thing called a CD. But the screen resolution was in keeping with the graphics-cards of the day. The reason it looks like shit on a modern screen is because of the upscaling.
Having grown up with he original Myst and after recently having spent so much time with Riven it feels kinda weird watching the realmyst version. The free movement scares me :o But it is the better option for modern systems I guess.

i think the main advantage realmyst has over the original is one that would be enough of an excuse in my opinion for them to remake the other games as well: the original game, as well as riven (and i am not sure about the other two) only had one type of animation at all: quick-time movies. the remake has actual animation that allows for better visuals, freeroam, a day-night cycle, and most importantly: the virtual imaging chamber projections actually look 3d. they looked horrid in the original
The software cursor in the recording doesn't seem to match up with where you're clearly looking/clicking. Probably just a recording thing, but slightly distracting. (But only slightly; YES! Myst! I am excite.)
That mouse pointer alignment issue was there from the beginning of the episode actually. I noticed it when you first went into the dockside forechamber and started messing around with the control panel.

Pretty much the only thing I hated about the technical limitations of the original Myst was the motionless water with painted-on "waves". Everything else, from the click-to-walk fade-throughs to the weirdly abstract appearance of the trees, I was able to comfortably shove into the background, like the borders of a comic strip, and enjoy the experience without distraction. But the totally stationary but non-flat water really bothered me.
Years ago I forgot the name of this and started thinking it was called "Myth" but I need to rewatch this game series, not necessarily from this channel, though.
I used my phone to take screenshots while playing The Secret World way back when it was released. It was easier to have my phone beside me to look up images than alt-tabbing and trying to find the screenshot folder (back when I only had one monitor). It might be a way to avoid clicking off the screen though, especially if it messes up your mouse. Also thanks for reading the books, I like your voice :)
Oh damn. Haven't played this game in a long while. Are the later Myst games also on your list? I'm a huge fan of the third one; invested quite some time into helping to keep it running on later OS X (now macOS) systems since it was originally a Mac OS 9 application. Still works!
I just finished playing this game for the first time and I swear I did the exact same smiley face on the fireplace puzzle when I first found it 😂 I wonder how many other people did that too
I don't know if you will eventually read this but the weird cursor error where it looks to be in one place but turns out different in the video playback can be a result of conflicting resolution between refresh rate and monitor resolution and possibly even differences in recording resolution and gaming resolution (if the game has some rules regarding its own resolution). I experienced this first hand when playing starmade (a Minecraft like space building game where you make your own spaceship you can fly and explore the cosmos). Changing the game's resolution results in 'phantoming' (the buttons are not occupying the same space that the resolution shows) you go to click on ok and nothing happens, the image of the button and where the game thinks the button is are different, when you change resolution the game compensates the location of the two differently so the actual button is further/closer to wherever the origin for the game was decided. In your case I think the resolution you are trying to record at and the resolution of the fake 'mouse' with the resolution of the game are different, the mouse is likely greater/less than the game and the game could be compensating for this while the recording software is not, the most simple solution would be to reposition the cursor in post, however the cursor goes off screen and you can't compensate for that, The other solution would be messing with resolution (maybe forcing it and seeing what happens or even starting recording after the effect so it know relatively where the cursor is). I don't know how this game interprets the cursor with itself but the cursor can't leave the bounds of the monitor naturally (if at all) so I suspect you are running the game in windowed mode (the same mode the starmade problem persists in) so switching to full may make it go away, there are likely to be numerous other ways of possibly fixing this but without knowing what's causing it I'm suggesting ways the problem can happen and what to do to fix them, who knows maybe someone encountered your issue before and found a fix, but I doubt many people are playing this on modern computers so maybe not. I wish you the best of luck in fixing this bug but it doesn't detract much from seeing you playing the game and seeing as you likely completed this game this advice may seem redundant or too late. I merely hope you keep this in mind just in case it happens in the future as it may help you fix the 'phantoming' effect.
Now the idea of this is nostalgic, although I didn't play the 3D version and I imagine it 'could' make finding things harder, if you don't know if there in view (no idea about the intro music, but nice).

Having a flashlight would make a huge difference at various points in the game. I've never played the masterpiece edition. Looks like they made great QOL improvements!
It's so weird that they made the imager beep twice instead of once when you close it. Also, while the Marker Switch Diagram looks much nicer now, the Topographical Extrusion is so much worse. And why would they let you look at the button on the back of the imager, but not make it work?

you can actually right click, and then the camera will automatically follow the mouse, fps style :)
I do think that it would improve the Myst experience if you actually read text describing the Age, and as you draw closer to the page that actually describes the landing site, a faint ghostly picture of that scene appears across both of the pages, getting clearer with every page you advance, until finally you turn the page and the whole book has turned into a portal which pulls you in when you touch it.
Now the idea of this is nostalgic, although I didn't play the 3D version and I imagine it 'could' make finding things harder, if you don't know if there in view (no idea about the intro music, but nice).
who made the opening music and who made the ending music the are both amazing?
Pyre - In the Flame (Darren Korb)
Undertale - Ruins (Toby Fox)
thanks!
Robin Miller (Brother of Rand, the other game developer) contributed most of the music. His soundtrack to Riven is really good.
@@johnberkley6942 Rand & Robyn are both musicians & both contributed. I was there when they were creating all of their games & played their working copies when they were in development phase. I grew up with Rand & their father was pastor of our church.
Having a flashlight would make a huge difference at various points in the game. I've never played the masterpiece edition. Looks like they made great QOL improvements!
I forgot The Name of The Company but A Company made A parody of The Game called Pyst with John Goodman
It's so weird that they made the imager beep twice instead of once when you close it. Also, while the Marker Switch Diagram looks much nicer now, the Topographical Extrusion is so much worse. And why would they let you look at the button on the back of the imager, but not make it work?
The Headspin game engine was (and still is) very stable I don't know why you couldn't run realMYST on your computer...
lol, is someone going to submit _Return to Zork_ next?
Yes People when Someone is Playing A Puzzle Game don't give Them The Answer at least not Unless They are hopeless stuck

Somebody is doing a LP of Myst? Ooooh... @_@

God, the static on the prison books is awful. Why couldn't they update THAT effect?
Usually the claim is that original files have been lost and whatnot. So they may have only had the version that was already edited and not the original recording.
Conversely, that liquid-metal board in the fireplace is still one of the coolest things ever IMO.
Aww dmc was once again crushed;-;
So did anyone figure out why the color of the text changes in the channelwood journal?
The explanation is in the journal.
what's that song at the beginning?
Worst version of Myst I hate to say it. Broken in so many ways but I imagine you rocked it Regardless.
Is he still around?
YES!!!!!!
Outro song?
