Rand and Robyn Miller had a little shack in the woods with computers and decided to make a video game. This is the work of two guys with a ton of time on their hands. It's as indie of a game as you can get. They did all the programming, the designing, the marketing, the music, and the acting. In fact, Rand Miller had to play both Achenar and Atrus by scruffying up for Achenar and then wisening up for Atrus so that he looked like two different characters.
Around 13 minutes: the little symbol next to the lever shows a representation of the relative positions of the openings in the inner and outer cylinders of the elevator. No need to walk back and forth to check.

Those four sounds are cardinal directions. North is Dink, East is the sound of a slinky whoosh noise, South is Clunk (a dull cowbell noise), West is clirrup (insect like).
I love all the different onomatopoeia that people come up with to describe these sounds, lol. I usually call them "tink" (N), "twir" (W), "dong" / "cowbell" (S), and "pff" (E) [for realMyst] -- or "tzzr" (E) [for classic Myst].
@@MrTaylork1 That's not an "easter egg" so much as a clue to the backstory of the game. An easter egg is more like something that doesn't especially fit in the setting but is thrown in as a wink and a nod to fans.
lol jesus, "Sirius and Agenon." Sirrus and Achenar. Every episode you see those names in text and/or hear them in speech yet continue to say them wrong.
I thought he was going to say Agamemnon. Which is funny because of the house of Atreus. * crickets * You know...like Atrus? Tragic family drama? Yeah...I'll just show myself out.
They could've done something with the static noise videos, like remixed them or something. I can't imagine them to be so loved in the original to be kept the way they are.
I've been playing along with you, and I got freaking softlocked in the elevator room in the Mechanical Age! Lost an hour and a half of progress! Though catching up, now that I know what to do, will take a whole fifteen minutes tops......
13:10 what were you doing? There's literally a white icon on the left that shows the elevator orientation :D And the rotation simulator makes the same sounds so you can learn which sound = which direction the fortress faces when you apply the brake.
Love everyone talking mad shit on him not missing small things Meanwhile we all know full well you fools would miss the same things if you didn't already play through this and use a walkthrough Also the people getting pissed at the mispronunciations have got me fucked up lmao, "they say it so many times!!!"oh you mean in those sections were its really unclear what they're saying because of the static?? 💀💀
Does anybody know who the woman in the painting is? I don't think it's Catherine, it doesn't really look like the woman who plays Catherine in Riven, though of course the original Myst wouldn't likely have settled on an actress to hire for that role yet. Do you think it was someone that Sirrus had the hots for, or just a classical painting on Mechanical Age which Sirrus looted because it was valuable? Or was it from some other age entirely and he brought it with him to furnish his rooms? Also, why do you suppose he has those geometric shapes?
I don't know if official Myst lore has an explanation for it, but it's a painting by the 19th century French artist Ingres, called "Portrait of Madame Moitessier". (Assuming you didn't find it already in the nine months since you asked!)
I like how Sirrus says "I see that you are..." and then whatever he's saying cuts out, so you can literally imagine that he described you accurately or inaccurately, no matter what you look like or appear to be.
I know you will not see this until you are half done or done but, I think there is a 3rd brother. Why you say, cause there are 3 stones. Why a yellow one if that is not a brother? Where is he? Maybe the red and blue bothers bearied him so much that there is no trace of him? Maybe he is the good brother. I'm just guessing. Chirp
A like how you said earlier, that they probably made the tiny book screens to fit video on small media of the time (CDs?). They could have made the videos much larger if 80% of it wasn't static :D
So if your wanting to choose between red or blue pages. It comes down to either if u want physical pain by aganom Or mental pain Being greed from serus
Ultimately they'll both kill you; the main difference is just what their reasons for doing it will be, and whether their monologue over your death will be smugly superior or cacklingly deranged.
"Strange... Very Strange..."
I think this is the defining legacy of the Myst franchise, and probably my favorite part.

The portrait in Sirrus' room is actually Sirrus' face photoshoped on "Napoleon I on His Imperial Throne" painting.

Listening to you talk about Sirrus and Achenar, trying to figure out who has which room, cracks me up (in a good way).
It's Serious and Aggenon lol
given the two brother's predelictions, I kinda call them "Beerus" and "Thwackenar" in my head these days.
When I first played this age, I did it with no sound. Many facepalms, when I replayed later.
How did you ever manage the Selenitic age? That one is ALL ABOUT sound.
if you rotate the fortress so that telescope points at 135 SE (a familiar direction!) - you'll see an easter egg.
What is it?

Yes, it is linguistics. Specifically, I would put it under etymology, which is the origins and derivations of words.
They were in fact called Cyan.
Yup, his comment made me just go look. I have my original Myst CDs from 1994, they're tagged Cyan and Broderbund.

Should has spent more time in the simulator ;)
At the time they were just called Cyan. Now they have renamed to Cyan Worlds. (close enough)
And I think Broderbund distributed it

hate to slightly spoil, but no. There are only 2 brothers, but you are close in the sense that there is a 3rd family member.
We all know that it was Atrus who built the fortress. It wouldn't be surprising if Atrus and Catherine had their own places in different ages.
