Michael McDonald has two voices at the same time. One low and raspy and the second one a pure and crisp tenor. One voice two sounds at the same time. Never heard anyone else do that. Purely magical.

"What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." It's about not being a fool and just believing what you see, or what you WANT to see. A fool just believes what he sees and no amount of reasoning can convince him otherwise. The wise man questions it and applies reason and logic to see what's really there. I have tried to live by this idea my whole life.
So yes, the guy he's singing about is the fool because he can't see that she was never into him but he thinks he still has a chance of getting together with her because "what seems to be is always better than nothing". So he's holding on to hope in spite of reason saying that she done peaced out.

You can't go wrong with the Doobies. One of the greatest bands of all time. I really appreciate how the younger generation reacts to the music I grew up too. Music back then was pure talent, raw ability with no computer sound bites or special effects. Every musician played their instruments and every singer actually sang without any autotuning. This is what real music and mastery of craftsmanship is all about.

Have fun Leo. You've scratched the surface this past year but you have got so much great music still to cover. I envy you but I'm glad I get to see you find it all.

This is one of my favorite songs ever.
When i was a little kid in 1980 i used to take my older sisters vinil and spin it.
To this day i listen to it yearly. I have my own vinil copy now.

One of my all time favorite songs. You're a little off with the meaning, though. They were never really a couple, he just remembers it that way. She barely remembers who he is. I think that's why the song has such a bittersweet feeling for so many people; a lot of us have been there.

Omg Leo, I promise you you're going to drop your Doobie when you hear "MINUTE BY MINUTE" . He's saying the same sort of things you're grooving to with this one. My favorite verse:
"Call my name and I'll be gone/You'll reach out and I won't be there/ Just my luck you'll realize, you should spend your life with someone/ You could spend your life with someone"
    Good soulful stuff!

The Doobies changed completely; they had a classic blues rock sound early, and then a jazzy pop sound later. This is a hit from the later phase.
If you like this sound, try "Takin' it to the Streets" next.

I'm pretty sure this song is about a guy who thought he had a thing with this woman from his past. It was all in his head...he realizes that "it never really was". I'm sure we all have a woman like that from our past. The one sided crush!

"What A Fool Believes" reached number one on the Hot 100 on April 14, 1979. The song received Grammy Awards in 1980 for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Love this tune.
