- A photo taken and tweeted by a FOX 4 News photographer has gone viral.
The image shows a Dallas police officer comforting a 3-month-old baby who had just survived a rollover accident. It has drawn praise from many in law enforcement saying it shows a side of police the public does not often see.
Photojournalist Sam Hernandez regularly reports on accidents, but he noticed something different happening on this scene and captured it.

Amid the wreckage of a car overturned on the edge of Downtown Dallas over the weekend was a DPD Officer Donald Boice singing to and bouncing a baby.
"The comments on the call sheet were that the vehicle had overturned and there were multiple children trapped inside the car,” he recalled.
Officer Boice was at the scene of a fatal crash around 5 a.m. Sunday morning when he heard about another major crash the sheriff's office was working nearby, at the Commerce Street exit off Stemmons freeway.
"Honestly, my thoughts were just, 'Please, God. Not another one tonight,’” he recalled.
Boice is not with the sheriff's office. He didn't have to respond to the wreck. But he says he couldn’t help himself since he is a father to three boys.
“At that point, you kind of go from cop to parent real quick,” he said.
By the time Boice got on scene, he says witnesses to the crash had already removed the children, ages 5, 2 and 3 months old, from the Chevy Trailblazer.
A sheriff's office report says the parents and their children were traveling at a high rate of speed when they hit an object in a construction zone, causing the car to flip. Boice says the father fractured his arm and injured his head.
"Both parents were screaming, ‘Please don't let my baby die. Please don't let my babies die,’” he recalled.
That's when Boice triaged the kids and made sure they were alright. He shielded them from the chaos but still kept them in the mother's line of sight from the ambulance. He picked up the youngest child named Jackson.
"The best I can do is just kind of keep him, bounce him, sing to him the same songs that I sang to my kids when they were that age,” the officer said.
Hernandez noticed Boice with the baby and captured it. He tweeted several photos of a serene moment of comfort in the midst of flashing lights and mangled metal.
It didn't take long for Dallas police officers to start retweeting Hernandez’s pictures, giving people a look at the side of law enforcement not often seen.

"That could be my child, too,” Boice said. “And I'd want someone treating my child the same way."
The Dallas County Sheriff's Office says the family is from Michigan. The officer says the fact that the children are unharmed is a testament to their car seats working.
FOX 4 News is a FOX-owned station serving Dallas-Fort Worth and all of North Texas.
He didn’t just hold the baby... he comforted the baby with eye contact, conversation, singing, rocking, bouncing, swaying. Total engagement. That’s how it’s done!

My daughter was killed by a drunk driver when she was 10 and the first cop on the scene laid in the street and held my child till she took her last breath and cried his heart out when she died , he was the comfort and love she needed as she left this world

You read this, and your first thought went to the individual whom was obviously old enough to decide they wanted to get drunk and still get behind the wheel of a car... who then proceeded to horrifically end the life of a truly innocent child. Yet, you still choose to say what you did to her mother?
I truly hope, with all my heart, that no one will ever cause you as much pain as this mother has experienced, and that no one ever says anything so overtly insensitive to you, as you have oh-so-casually done to her. That's so incredibly cruel of you... I truly hope she never sees it. 😢
@Logical sane Justice is not cruelty. And since the driver made the decision to drive while intoxicated, he should have to pay the consequences of his actions.

But the reality is that a rollover tested car seat will significantly reduce harm to babies in an accident. It is absolutely the car seat that saved this baby's life.

I really think that a lot of people forget that cops are people too. I'll never forget the officer that comforted 7yr old me, after the accident that killed my mother. He gave me a kitty plushie, (I found out later that RCMP officers carry around plush toys in their cars, for just such situations) I never went anywhere without that kitty plush for months after....
Even if he's forgotten me, I haven't forgotten him.

The fact that he stood close to the mother beening treated in the wreck so she could see her 3 month old baby was ok and in good hands to not panic the mommy, and as well as the other public server's with the 2 other children close by comforting the them. humanity's at its finest 💙

Helping the kids is one thing. Comforting them is an instinct for anyone who has kids or helped raise some. But keeping them in line of sight of Mom was so respectful and courteous. Good man.

I so agree!!! Car seats are so important!! But there's also that part of me that truly believes the hand of God, was helping to keep those precious babies safe.
There shouldn't be any salute necessary. It should be common practice to have everyone secured.

One of the parts of this that I absolutely love is he knows that mothers need to be able to see their children. He specifically stayed in eyesight and comforted those babies. I'm tearing up because if that were me it would mean everything.

I knew the minute I saw him holding that sweet baby, that he was a dad. He was calm, comforting and sang to the little one. Incredible. Great job Officer.
My dad was a cop the NE Division of DPD. I remember one case in particular that had him in tears. A little girl who had been badly abused by her mother. She was clearly terrified,so my dad started talking to her like he would talk to me when I was her age. (She was 4) She told him her mom would punish her because the police came. He told her it would never happen again,and he would make sure of it. The mother lost custody and went to prison,and the girl went to her grandparents with regular checks. My dad used to stop by just so she would know he was keeping his word. But the sight of her injuries and scars the day he first saw her really got to him. I remember him crying about it to my mum,saying all he could think about was how she looked like me,and he couldn’t understand why anybody would do that to their child. He had to retire due to injury,but never forgot her. Up until the day he died he would say how he hoped and prayed she had a happy life. We also took in a learning disabled teen he found living on the streets. He was with us about 2 years,then moved to an adult supported living facility.

I avoid them as much as possible in life. I see too many of them... I cross the street. I walk the other way... Because I dont feel safe. There are good cops. I dont deny this at all. But you cant visually tell whether its a good cop or bad cop until the interaction and if its a bad one you just took a gamble that may cost you your life or liberty. So I avoid them all together. But dont make it seem there are these "few" bad apples. If that were the case they wouldve been arrested or fired and everything would be good again. So I applaud this cop for showing humanity and decency and love. More cops need to. Change the perception.. Change the mistrust and fear. Change the reality by just being humane.

I believe that as well. We hear about the bad ones because that’s what “news” is... reporting the unusual or the rare. Sometimes we forget about the other 100, because generally being a good citizen is not news and so it feels like it’s more bad than good but luckily, that’s not the way it is (yet).

It's ingrained in us to remember the bad as a survival instinct, but yes, this is why we need to celebrate the goodness that is far more abundant, even if unnoticed.

He was doing the Daddy Bop with the little baby. Such a sweet moment during a chaotic, awful scene. Those parents are never going to forget the kindness he showed to their children and the respect he showed to her when he asked if he could hold the baby so she could be treated and stayed in her line of vision. Coos are people and parents, too. We need to remember that in these polarizing times.

it's actually kinda sad that they are so many bad people in the world we praise onthers for doing the slightest good thing. Everyone should be doing what he did.
It doesn't help that media latches onto the bad and skims over the good. They're more interested in promoting the faces and names of criminals than they are people who actually help. I noticed that a lot, they want to focus of all the evil and what it has done, not on people connecting, caring for eachother or coming to help when disaster strikes.
Uh, exactly. In a world of bad, that is why people DO praise the good that people do. No matter how little it may be. I love police officers. I had a bad allergic reaction One Time .I was driving to the hospital ." When my mom got the new car for me she had it set up with OnStar " a lady comes on speaker in my car . " Im Looking around like God ? Is that you ?"she says you're swerving can you pull over. I have officers and paramedics on the way to you. I didn't even realize how bad I was. The sheriff stayed with me until the paramedics got there. He had gotten all my information in under a minute.he was so sweet. He called my mom and then he stayed with my car until they picked it up like an hour later. On holidays I do nice things for them because they deserve it !

The real heroes are the firefighters helping the people out of the wreck. They are the men and women overseas in out military. Not the people who violate people everyday giving them tickets or arresting people for victimless crimes. Of course they want to make you believe they are good. They want to violate your rights.

You’re gonna say the cops are wrong for that too? Of course you say the military are heroes too, because they kill innocent people overseas but makes you think it is to “protect our country”
