@@grand-dadmiral that and it was a Disney show, meaning it has limits of what it can show graphically. If it were back on Cartoon Network, the animators could get it to pass.
Power was intentionally lowered so they didnt instantly vaporize the base. Tarkin wanted the rebel leaders alive, so Thrawn was able to just end this from space. And as we see from the rest of the battle, he pretty much achieved that. It took the literal will of the force (Bendu) for any rebels to escape.
Turbolasers lose much of their effectiveness when the plasma interacts with the atmosphere. It's also possible they were intentionally set to a lower power since they wanted to capture, not kill, the rebel leaders.
Star destroyers can fire a variety of blasts for various purposes from disabling shields to destroying capital ship and even planet surfaces. In this scenario, Thrawn did not want to kill the rebel leaders. Thrawn had planned to capture the rebels alive so the empire can extract information from the rebels.
Imperial-I Class Star Destroyers that have the turbolaser turrets of the Imperial-II Class. Ah, you got to love the attention to detail in this series.
(Spanish) Bueno yo que soy amante de las naves ese fue un detalle que me molestó, los Clase Imperial II no existían aún y ya te venían con las torretas óctuples, eso arruina el canon.
To be fair, it's Thrawn's flagship. Yes, it's not an executor-class star destroyer. But if The Chimaera (His Ship) has class II Turbo lazers, it is a hybrid.
Its actually a really smart play by Thrawn. Give the rebels the illusion that their shields can withstand the bombardment so that they would remain inside of the shield area and not spread out or try to seek better defensive positions.
I always felt like the bombardment from all those Star Destroyers to be a bit lackluster. Turbo laser fire could do way more damage. If you look at the destruction of Kamino from 3 Venator class star destroyers, the explosions and destruction was phenomenal and those were just medium turbo laser cannons. Now imagine the firepower from several Imperial class star destroyer that dwarfs the armament of a Venator class raining hell on a planets surface. It’s not shown well in Rebels the pure destruction of turbo laser fire. These explosions was more like grenades in comparison to the destruction of Kamino seen in The Bad Batch.
Thats because for some random reason Rebels animation is on a lower budget, as a result everything looks toned down in comparison to what it actually looks like.
Those Venators were blasting Kamino at point blank while Thrawn was firing from orbit. It’s possible the laser fire dissipated and lost destructive power upon entering the atmosphere. It makes sense anyway as Thrawn wasn’t trying to kill the Rebels as he was ordered to take prisoners.
Thrawn was such an awesome character, he would have been the perfect villain for the next trilogy, too bad Disney made the mistake of throwing that away.
These are pretty bitch-tier Turbolasers. We hear in comics (canon and legends both.) That turbolasers such from Republic Era-Imperial could start a forest fire with just one shot from a Turbolaser and devastate buildings along with SLAGGING planets with full bombardments. But here we see fucking Kanan Jarrus just dodge em and the Lasers not even creating a damn dent in the sand/dirt or glassing this shit. This just shows how damn shit-tier and unmotivated the Designers were. Edit: I'd also like to add Star Destroyers were MEANT to do these Base-Delta Zero tactics. So definitely these turbo-lasers pack WAY more of a punch than even shown here. Just a poor display of an awesome scene.
The drum beats during the orbital strike had me thinking of a soundtrack from Wolfenstein 3D. I wished the orbital strike held for longer for the music to continue. It sounded as dark as "Wolfenstein 3D Soundtrack - P.O.W." The more I look at Agent Kallus, and his history throughout the show, he resembles Agent Blaskowitz to me. Especially with how he is working undercover as a spy for a rebellion opposed by an authoritarian government. In the "Behind Imperial Eyes" episode, Ezra had the plan of starting out as if Agent Blaskowitz would've done in the first mission. Getting ready to ambush a single guard for a weapon, to perhaps proceed out from his cell with a captured weapon. During this season finale, I've imagined as if Agent Kallus has escaped from the Star Destroyer like a level in Wolfenstein. What if Grand Admiral Thrawn is like a boss in Wolfenstien and Agent Kallus has to face him, again. This episode has me very interested in Agent Kallus now. Because he is not some space wizard with special powers infiltrating bases and what-not.
You can see how Syndulla is resisiting to accept that she is having fear. In the moment her conviction got broked, Thrawn stopped the fire. Good use of symbolism 1:23

Thrawn had all of them dead to rights. If it wasn't for Tarkin ordering him to take the leadership alive, he would have flattened Chopper Base and killed everyone on the surface.
1:08 this staring contest between Thrawn and Hera is so good. Thrawn is just confident the entire way through. Hera is defiant, but slowly loses it and blinks just as the shield is about to give out.
You know, that is still a very impressive shield. I mean, sure, the laseres had been trabeling through a bit of atmosphere, which cyphenes of some of it's energy, and I think more so through Bendu's cloud. But it still held up for a long time, even they would've been gonors a few seconds later
I always imagined turbolasers to be more powerful than that. Like, any one of those near misses should have killed Kanan. A shot that is designed to take out capital ships that are shielded would be much more lethal. This is what I imagined the smaller weapons to be, maybe the point defense or anti-meteor weapons.
There is a lot of inconsistency in terms of turbolaser strenght In one comic 3 imperial I ISD were able to wipe out all cities on one hemispere of mon cala in terms of minutes Or in one book some ISD were able to shake kashyyyk continents The only logical explanation would be that here the energy of each shot has been drastically reduced so that they won't destroy the base by accident
I would have preferred the "orbital bombardment" to be named, "Orbital Strike" like Battlefront 1, and I have been seeing a lot messages about how the laser blast should have more explosive and heavier than the entire sequence shown here, and I agree that just like Battlefront 1, Orbital Strikes actually littered the area with turbo blaster hits and they were more deadlier than these, but since this attack was against a shield generator, if would sustained A LOT more than that.
No it isn't. More like 1/1,000,000. Thrawn was ordered to capture a small facility. Base Delta Zero is wiping out a whole planet's populace. It's the difference between capturing Fort Necessity and bombing all of Earth's major cities.
Lore Wise; the rebels are lucky Thrawn Stopped. In several books featuring the empire; Star Destroyers have fired volleys so brutal they turned what they were aiming at into molten glass. In Star Wars Battlefront II (not the new one; the old classic...) Echo Base on Hoth was hit by bombardments from Star Destroyers to finish off the remaining rebels. According to Star Wars Lore; it only takes one Star Destroyer to glass a city. Had Thrawn not stopped firing; that rebel base would have been turned into a glassy liquid.
The Admiral 9.26K subscribers WOW! Grand Admiral Thrawn certainly knows how to use Imperial I/II-class Star Destroyers in a more reliable, more efficient, very useful, and effective ways such as using them in extremely deadly orbital bombardments above either a planet or over a city, as well as effective fleet formation tactics too. Star Destroyers are NOT as useless as nearly everyone (including me) first thought. Star Destroyers do make excellent Battleships and blockade vessels when used properly in the right way (depending on the commander, an Admiral, or in this case... a Grand Admiral).

I've noticed comments on the effectiveness of Thrawn's bombardment, and why the turbolasers were so "weak" here in comparison to other portrayals of them. Starships throughout Star Wars have always been given the ability to adjust the power output and damage of their weapons. They can be altered to simply give a "taste" of their capabilities or to outright vaporize and char an entire planet, turning its surface into molten slag. Here, Thrawn didn't want to destroy Atollon's surface but provide the rebels a simple demonstration of what was coming for them and to test the deflector shield they were sheltered under to properly administer the ground forces on their strategy. In other Star Wars media, we've seen a warship adjust its output to vaporize small asteroids in Empire Strikes Back, because one of the Star Destroyer's was wiped out by one. Vader's commanders couldn't take such risks despite him wanting the Falcon found; they turned up their turbolasers to destroy any asteroids in their way to not take such casualties again. This was not the case on Atollon. There is also a Republic/Imperial naval tactic referred to as Base Delta Zero, where an orbiting fleet was authorized to administer slag-producing capabilities to their cannons and demolish a planet's surface to bring an enemy out from underground, such as in trenches or buried bunkers. There's also Base Gamma One, a code for a type of bombardment that could cause surface water to boil and evaporate away by heating a planet's atmosphere. The Empire used BGO during an assault on Haruun Kal, but the bombardment had severe repercussions for Imperial troops, such as causing them to convulse from the intense heat produced from the attack. Turbolasers and bombardments aren't always the same level of destruction. And Thrawn used bombardments twice in Rebels: on Atollon and on Lothal, both of which were used to simply invoke fear and send a message to his enemies of his power and what he's willing to do to achieve a victory. Then there was Rampart's aerial bombardment on Kamino, and other off-screen ones that happened in The Bad Batch, where the Empire employed enough power to wipe out entire cities and fortifications. If you want confirmation that starships can alter their yield, General Grievous's Invisible Hand's main cannons have a setting on their cannons that is equivalent in power to a magnitude-10 earthquake, which in real-life would be devastating but impossible.
This music is amazing. My wish is only that the scene was different. How Herra begins to feel that streak of fear and cowers as the bombardment rains down bothers me. Feeling like it would have been extremely telling of her character to instead have her tighten her fist with anger. Looking up and fixated on the lasers pouring onto the base. Instead of cowering like it was her end, she would be angry thinking that Kanaan could be dead and all that she had worked for was about to be gone. Then as the bombardment stopped have her mood unchanged. With the ‘you’re going to wish you killed me’ attitude. That would have been better at least. Also the part at the end with Rex lifting his arms is comical to me. Rex knows that it was a show of military force. If the empire wanted them dead they would be. Showing Rex be like “yayy we won” is kind of stupid.
I'd like to see you face down imminent death without fear, and Rex is a minor character in this series, not a major one like he was in Clone Wars. The scene needed to move by quickly, so having him just shout in joy and raise his hands is a narrative necessity. Since they didn't state anything otherwise, if it makes you feel better you can just say he was putting on a show for Zeb to keep morale up.
If I was Thrawn, I would’ve stood there enjoying the overwhelming power I have the crash such small insignificance. I often enjoy playing as the Empire in Star Wars strategy games.
You know, why hasn't this strategy been used before in previous invasion campaigns? For example the second battle of Geonosis or literally any battle where a Navy fleet succeeded after a space battle. I would love to see everyone's theory as of why
Collateral damage. You don't want to destroy the planet, you want to occupy it and take control of it's resources. Despite how many losses you may suffer, it is still incomparable to the resources an entire planet can supply to your cause and future war effort. Strategically it makes no sense to orbitally bombard most targets since it would be more beneficial to capture the location. Sometimes it was necessary or more beneficial to make orbital bombardments. But not as often as it would be to capture a target. War isn't only about destroying your enemy after all. You have to think about your goals in the war and what comes afterwards.
This was as much a show of force as it was psychological warfare: Thrawn demonstrated that he knew where they were hiding, he had the means to destroy them at any time and he only stopped because he felt like it. On one hand, it's typical Star Wars/Disney villain supremacist arrogance and hubris that is exploited time and again by terrorists (or "the good guys"); on the other hand, it showed a glimpse of his strategic genius. If it were a japanese Anime, he could be either that gloating cardboard villain, an enemy general with honor or even a possible noble defector.
There are two reasons Thrawn didn't win entirely and neither were his fault. He was told to capture them so their public executions would inspire fear; he could have just ended it with a bombardment immediately. And the Bendu was the only reason the Rebels escaped.
I'd kill for a show just about the Empire and its brilliant generals instead of always following the rebels.
You'd see Thrawn and a few others making great strides to secure the Empires control while others bicker and show massive incompetence in preventing and defeating small rebellions. You're right, but that's really sad in itself. Hera is an exceptionally capable pilot and a decent strategist, but she couldn't even hold a candle to Thrawn. The fact that he views her as a rival is just a testament to how dumbed down Thrawn is in Rebels.
@@bakersmileyface he admires her spirit, her tenacity, and while strategically not able to hold up to Thrawn, her inherent leadership quality and capabilities cannot be denied. I honestly can see why he saw her as a worthy and honorable foe

Fav scene in the series. The actual fear in Hera's eyes and the desperation in her voice when the bombardment stopped. Always thought up until now her and her allies were kinda cocky. Thrawn shows up, outsmarts them and then hands them their asses. This I think was when the rebel group got humbled, especially after losing their fleet and having their cell disbanded because the losses were too high
Can I have the music of the darker Thrawn theme when the bombardment gets bad.

As much as I love this scene with Thrawn, Kallus really sells it in my opinion. Every time we see Thrawn during this scene, we see Kallus grow more and more concern for the Rebels. showing how much he's changed.
0:33,last moment of the planet Alderaan.
This is one of the best Star Wars scenes out of any show or movie
Is it me or at the end of the bombardment is like Thrawn and Hera are having a standoff duel of feinting and Hera "lost" ?
It is a visual metaphor of the conflict at this point in time, the rebels' resolve waning, as they cower under the might of Thrawn and the empire. It's solid filmmaking and one of my favorite moments of the entire series.
"And now Captain Syndulla, I will accept your formal surrender."
maybe it's just me but something about the lighting, angles, and situation or something else about this scene is reminding me strongly of kotor 1 when Malak orders the orbital bombardment of Taris.
BeoJack i agree. The scene of thrawn watching the bombardment at 1:08 is exactly how kotor showed malak watching the sith bombardment of taris
sadly will never see something like this in the main movie its far cruel to torch entire cities the burnded out remain would be far better reminder than a blown up planet which will be forgotten in the future.
Thrawn is a bad ass!
Coming from a fleet bombardment I kinda expected a bigger devastation than that
Thrawn wasn't trying to nuke the place, that's why. He wanted to test them, and maybe make them feel feeble rather than outright obliterate them.
if he wanted to kill them all he could have, wanted to capture them for information
I absolutely love Thrawn’s theme blaring in the background. Fucking amazing.
Wouldn't the turbolaser blasts be bigger?
They should, but larger explosions would mean larger rendering times, thus being more expensive to produce. Rebels was on a tight budget.

@@Labyrinth23All Imperial Star Destroyers in the series had the same model. A model that was wrong.
True???
@@Labyrinth23 What do you mean "True?". This mess of a series couldn't even make one of the most iconic ships in Star Wars right.
Its actually a really smart play by Thrawn. Give the rebels the illusion that their shields can withstand the bombardment so that they would remain inside of the shield area and not spread out or try to seek better defensive positions.
If they made a movie trilogy based on the Thrawn trilogy books, I'd implode because of the hype.
This is what we need but don't deserve because instead of fighting Disney united we just fought amongst ourselves
You mean the original Thrawn trilogy?
YEEA.
The Empire didn't need the Death Star, not when a battlegroup of 5 star destroyers plus screen can do this
Thrawn was such an awesome character, he would have been the perfect villain for the next trilogy, too bad Disney made the mistake of throwing that away.
ESPECAILLY if they kept the twist from the book that Thrawn wasn't really the villain..... ;)
Lmao, PREPARE
@@nx9100 Oh, don't worry about that

cry bozo, they don't need 1000 ships, nor do they need a whole planet destroyed. they have a weapon for that
one of my favorite scenes in the entire show
These are pretty bitch-tier Turbolasers.
Thrawns theme is nothing less than awesome, he's the only one, badass enough, to have organs in his theme.
great music
The soundtrack, the whole scene is just so intense and perfect.
This one scene is probably why the space battle showed so little capital ship fire
Those shots that landed near Kanan look in the ballpark of 40mm HE grenades. Disney really nerfed Star Wars firepower sometimes fierce.
And in comic they completly level all cities on one hemisphere in terms of minutes
Part of the reason I don’t consider Rebels as canon
1:07
The music.
Disney good job for once 😩
0:20 this footage of imperial controllers is reused in the series finale when Thrawn orders another bombardment over Lothal city, forcing Ezra to go.
Foot Lettuce that poor guy’s job is to point to a screen all throughout the show
"Thrawn Orders An Orbital Bombardment On Chopper" little overkill but alright
Damn Thrawn is magnificent
You can see how Syndulla is resisiting to accept that she is having fear. In the moment her conviction got broked, Thrawn stopped the fire. Good use of symbolism 1:23
"We have arrived, and it is now that we perform our charge.
In fealty to the God-Emperor (our undying Lord) and by the grace of the Golden Throne, I declare Exterminatus upon the Rebel world of Atollon.
I hereby sign the death warrant of an entire world and consign a million souls to oblivion.
May Imperial Justice account in all balance.
The Emperor Protects."
Imagine this in the clone wars art style season 7
0:24
wtf are you aiming at the rest of the ships are clearly firing directly forward
i like to see that thrawn is smart
01:06 Rooting for the Empire intensifies
I like that when the lasers hit the shield it’s like green rain coming down hard
There is a lot of inconsistency in terms of turbolaser strenght
In one comic 3 imperial I ISD were able to wipe out all cities on one hemispere of mon cala in terms of minutes
Or in one book some ISD were able to shake kashyyyk continents
The only logical explanation would be that here the energy of each shot has been drastically reduced so that they won't destroy the base by accident
Remember this is 1/100 of a Base delta zero
with the established firepower limits for turbolasers and ISDs, it would take more than 5 ISDs to actually do a BDZ.
No it isn't. More like 1/1,000,000. Thrawn was ordered to capture a small facility. Base Delta Zero is wiping out a whole planet's populace. It's the difference between capturing Fort Necessity and bombing all of Earth's major cities.
the last two season3 episodes were badass
When the Turbo Lasers from 3 Venator Class Star Destroyer have bigger explosions and do more damage in Bad Batch than 7 Star Destroyers In Rebels.

9.26K subscribers WOW!

Thats right
THAT'S all a star destroyer can do?
They may as well have been chucking sticks of dynamite out the window.
Thrawn was ordered to take the Rebels alive.
It doesnt matter if he was order to take them alive. The show clearly shows the Star destroyers basically opening up all its weapons but that's all the damage it could do? Lore wise im pretty sure that base and the area surrounding it should be a hot steaming pile of craters. But apparently people can survive a indirect hit and walk away just fine? Not even our modern day weapons are that weak.
Larger explosions would mean larger rendering times, thus being more expensive to produce, sadly.

They don't fire at all.
Imagine if it lasted for 5 more minutes

that theme is my fav
And possibly, just following orders. As Tarkin ordered him to bring the rebels alive.
So... I guess used his assault ability then...
Looking at this from the perspective of KoToR its no wonder Taris never recovered even a millennium after the bombardment.....
