- Going All In Active Duty at 34!
A brief video discussing some of the things that I experienced first hand while joining the Army at 34 years old.
I try to cover the mental and physical components.
If this video gets enough response, I’ll post more in depth conversations about everything I’ve experienced so far and give any information I can to anyone thinking about joining no matter what age.
I will always work to give you the most honest and up to date information I can.

I'm 37. I leave tomorrow to Fort Jackson. It's never too late.
Roger that! Show them what’s up💪
yes it is eventually too late. they do have an age cut off. thats when its too late.
I'm 37 as well I'm trying to get down with the get down myself
I'm 33. Just took the ASVAB yesterday. Got a 96. Now, I am trying to figure out what job I want.
I am 36 years old !! Leave July 18th 2022 !! It’s never too late !! Proud about you !! Bro
Im 38 almost 39 and I'm leaving for BMT very soon. Wish me luck! 💪😎
You can do it!
I’m 30 now and have considered joining the military…I regret not joining sooner when I was in my early 20’s but like they say it’s never too late
I joined at the age of 32. There were lots of 30s when I was in and they were way more motivated. The age does not matter.
I'm 30, thinking about. Want to but got to look into it more 🤔
I joined at 33 but did not ship out for boot camp until after my 34th birthday. The younger female soldiers fresh out of high school I trained with were so mean and coldblooded from my experience. Some military girls will even turn people against you like you started a rumor when you really did not. They will were bold enough to try to fight you or do other cruel stuff to you in AIT. And only some of the males were mean, too. They tried to curse out the females soldiers in AIT.
Facts
@brittanyscott3809 I turned 34 in ait there were only a few females in my platoon I got along with all of them. The only female I didn't get along with was one of my room mate who was in a different platoon but nobody liked her because she had an attitude and try to act like she know it all. Nobody wanted to be her battle buddy😂
I really hope there more 30+ like me at the time i get sent to BCT man, that way i wont feel that old 😅
I joined the Marine Corps at 18 and retired at 38. I can NOT relate to trying to start that journey at 30 years old. It says a lot about you that you made it through boot camp without losing your mind. Good luck to all you old timers starting at the bottom.
Lol this is a great comment!
Im 35 and going through the same issues, ready for a change. Sharing your experience has given me even more courage to go through with it.. Thanks for that ............Jeremy
You got this! Wish you the best!
Returning to say thank you. I am 31 and was laying in bed not sure where my life is going and am a single dad in an expensive city. I found your video first when I was wondering about 30+ joining. I did wildland firefighting and do cross fit so I feel I'm in better shape then I was when I was 18. My crew boss fighting fire was retired special forces so he trained us in a way that he did or learned in the forces. Today I feel I am better equipped for the military mentally and physically. My reason joining was for a house for my daughter. Now I see I can get even better career, set my daughter up for better opportunities and show her what a good man is.
You are my Hero bro. Keep it up. Your Daughter has an amazing Father to look up to.
I recently sign !!! 36 years old !! Iam so focus. ! #realman #realgoals
I just turned 30 and I've had this itch that I wanna do something more he apart of something bigger. I got my parents and siblings but no wife or kids. This makes me feel good thinking I am not to late. Thank you
if you decide to try to join, try to join the air force or coast guard before trying to join the army. you will be treated more like an adult in those other branches and you'll be treated more like a little kid in the army. plus if you enlist on active duty, if you join the army you will most likely have to stay in the barracks for probably years longer than you would in the coast guard or air force and that's going to suck even more as someone in your thirties.
@@golfery5119i feel that
I enlisted in the Marines at 29 turned 30 two weeks after completing MOS school. I’m currently a 30 year old lance corporal (E-3) and coming up on my first year as a Marine. I’ve wanted to do this since I was a kid but life just didn’t workout that way. I don’t regret my decision because I worked my ass off to earn the title. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask away. I got you!
I thought the cut out age is 28 ?
Only sucks about it u have to deal with your 22yrs old Sgt but you gonna be fine once you become cpl go for meritorious
@@mandobayasgalan4142 It is but you can get a waiver. I had to get 3. Age, Marriage and having a kid.
@@princeangelobaybayan722 I haven’t met anyone who’s been an asshole yet. I’m sure I will but as of now, my units Solid.
In the same boat.. currently waiting for my waiver to get approved and hopefully headed to basic this summer 🤟🏾
Going to a recruit office today to sign up and start PT. I’m overweight but I know I can fucking do this.
Inspirational man! They say the young have time and the old have experience. Being in our 30s doesn't mean we are old, means we are experienced and still have time.
Thank you! And this is so true, I really don’t feel behind because of my age. It’s actually a blessing to have built up the work ethic and realizing what’s bs versus necessary. It’s almost an advantage
From what I hear I just heard your better in your 30s
I joined at 27. The dealing with the high school mentality is hardest thing to get past in basic. 11B
I joined right out of high school in nov 2019 and the best thing that I found was to find someone that was physically and mentally superior and strive to be better (in a respectful manner). I recommend this to guys right out of high school, because I got to my unit and it was hard because I got here and NCO's and all the specialist's (I was one of like three privates) and physically and mentally I was stronger. Got super un-motivated and gained thirty odd pounds and was just a terrible soldier. Now I'm back down to the weight I was at and now that I myself am a specialist I strive to be one of the good examples for new soldiers so they don't end up like I did, un-motivated, fat as fuck, and hating everything, and drinking way too much.
At least you got to be around hot sweaty smelly 18/19 yr old female recruits.
I'm 31 starting out so definitely expecting this mentality/life experience challenge for basic
@@SirMysticRob Usually guys that are older get more slack from drills just by fact that yall don't give em as much BS off the rip. Best advice if you look generic as fuck blend in and when you graduate be that guy that the drill says "who the fuck are you".
@@Wilinater here's hoping that's how it goes 🤞
As long as they don't take note of me shirtless (unique tattoos tend to stand out) or randomly voluntell me for any leadership roles
Appreciate this video. Currently 36 and going through the paperwork phase for the Army. My wife has started IVF so likely she will be pregnant when I had to BCT. Thanks for your honesty and leading the charge!
You got it! I had a 1 year old and my wife was was 5 months prego when I joined, it was a rollercoaster of emotions but we made it! You got this! Thank you for watching!
I enlisted at 37. The Army is a new job. Learn everything you can. Take what you learn in every area and know that you are still one in a hundred (more like 500 these days). You signed on the line. Learn from the more experienced (age has little to do with Army / military experience), but you will learn more technical and leadership lessons than most of those young dumb kids. Be patient but keep your ears open and be humble to learn. Oh, and all the Army really cares about your PT score, so fix that. Seriously. No matter what else you might excel at, leadership, technical proficiency and more, you will not get promotions or training opportunities if your PT score is not what they are looking for. All the Army really cares about is that PT score.
Hi, Please explain further. what is PT? and is this before you join...is it different than ASVAB? (You are replying to a non Military person who is joining in 6 months, Im 32)
PT means physical training. So, the Army has a fitness test that all Soldiers take. All the Army cares about is how high you score on the test. Literally nothing else matters in terms of moving up and ahead in the Army.
All facts
Is not 35 the age limit ? I am 37 and I thought i could not anymore
Currently 28 and I’ll be 29 in November. I’m going through the paperwork phase for the Navy!
I’m 36 and signing my contract in two weeks. Most likely shipping out beginning of 2025 (I be 37). I can’t wait. But definitely dealing with younger people will be something different for me because I been a construction laborer for 17 years and always worked with people older then me.
36 starting the process now! Walk your path follow your mind
In our reality now, struggle, don't give up, only the people you love will stand by you, and stay away from bad friends
Brother thank you for this video. I’m 32yrs old and I’ve been stressing about my age. I plan of joining this year around November 2022. I want to join and enroll in OCS. I have a lot of weight to lose and studying to do. This was very informative
Hey! You got this! Just give it your all and I know you’ll do great! It’s not that bad at all. I wish you the best!
your age is not a issues . keep in mind that most special force member are in their 30 and close to 40 years , like the jtf2 in canada the avarage age is 37 so to join as a basic infantry soldier you more than good . and also in your 30 you still young and if you keep yourself in good shape and make exercise you still in your prime most mma fighter are in the 30 era and in top of their physical shape and carrier . even a 40 years or a bit more you will still be in good shape for the same reason , age is just a number you can be in your 50 and be in better shape than someone in is 20 ;)
Joining next month to same age let’s do this!
@@88tactics I just enlisted 3 weeks ago. 31 yrs old! I’ll turn 32 in basic
Stop stressing about your age. Ensure you’re running, and doing push-ups, sit ups, and pull ups. Work on your mental fortitude and the rest will fall in line.
Joined at 21 in 2021 though i was too old but you make me proud of all my older battles i had
Thanks man i really apricate this video
thank you brother ! gives me motivation and hope
I'm 34 joining better late than never. My mind set is different then it was when I was younger more mature a lot more experience in life
Whole first of all thank you for joining at 34 years old that took a lot of nerve to do something when you were that old I remember when I was 17 when I went in it was hard I imagine how hard it was for you again congratulations and thank you
So I was 605lbs… started wanting to make a change for my life! Down to 450lbs in 10 months and still pushing harder to finish getting this weight off. My motivation is of course my health for my family and kids, but also because I’m 35 and I regret not having joined when I was 18. Now I that is all I can think of is losing and joining.
My question is, once I am down to weight. Can I still get to Rangers?
At my age and having been this heavy, everyone is saying that I have destroyed my body and that main Army is one thing, but my dream of being a Ranger is gone! At this point I am willing to push to body failure, I don’t care. I just can’t live with regret of knowing that I never tried!
You can do it bro! Put God first and stay focused. Also, listen to David Goggins.
Thanks for making this video. 🙏🏽
Thank you for watching!
Real talk. Appreciated 👏
Thank You! 🙏🏼
Shipping out to basic in 15 days I’m 26 I appreciate you making these videos man. Keep up the great work
Go in there and give it all you’ve got , every step of the way. You’re at a great age to really stand out as leader, go in there and be the best version of yourself!
I joined in the summer of 1998. At the age of 23, I was middle aged. Everybody was 18. We had some 30 somethings as well. We had one soldier that was 29, going on his third time trying to join the military. He got kicked out of the navy for punching an officer. For grabbing his tushie. He then got kicked out of the army cause his recruiter hid his navy discharge. When I met him he was squared away, but suffered an injury. He went to rehab. When you are over 21, you are seen as old. But you may buy beer.
Thank you for sharing! So proud of you !
Thank you so much!!
Thank you for the video, I’ll be on the look out for the more. 👍
Thank you !🙏🏼 I’ll keep them coming!
I went to BCT in late 1976 at age 19. We had a 36 year old with us who did just fine.

I’m 35 and I just lost my job this past February I’ve always wanted to join the air force and do something with my life. I made a lot of money for myself however I don’t feel satisfied. I want to be something in life and thank you for this video
No problem! You seem to have have the motivation to do better , I will say having the right career as a soldier will make you feel like you have a purpose
I'm used to pushing myself past my limits.
Pain, fatigue, stress.. none of it really gets to me.
Detailed cars for 10 hours when I co-owned a detail business, then walked home after missing the bus.. it was over 17 miles. I was dog tired, but only stopped once for about 2 or 3 minutes and refused to beg strangers for a ride.
God bless you. Trust that he will provide everything it is you need.
I am happy that you are happy with your army career.
thank you i appreciated this video
Thank you 🙏🏼 I appreciate you watching it!
great video brother , thank you for your time and service as well. I'm about to turn 33 and just haven't found civilian life as rewarding as I thought it would be , so I'm going to give this a go!
Hey man, I've been trying to do civilian life since I got out at 28 years old, now just turned 33 and am so ready to go back and relinquish the VA disability rating, etc.
Hang in there. You did right by your family. I joined at 27, now retired 2.5 yrs. You won't be bill gates off the check but it's a wonderful feeling to know all the bills are paid and you can focus enjoying life.
Btw if you can go Warrant, do it ASAP. After you get that dot, everyone leaves you alone. Last 8 years of my career was like ice skating. Smooooooth.
I've heard Warrant Officer is a rarity from my roommate who was in the Navy. Is it more common for the Army? I fully understand how NCO and Officer stuff works, but never really understood Warrant
@@SirMysticRob Warrants are almost gone in other branches. I believe air force doesn't have them anymore. Marines I've been told are treated like enlisted. No idea about navy. Army you are considered a subject matter expert. Because of this leadership will leave a warrant to do what they need to. Many times the warrants stay in a unit for years and will be an amazing asset to incoming command for continuity. You get a lot of freedom. After i got mine i was told by my COL to never show up to formation or PT again. But he made it clear that my freedom came at a price. If something broke they expect you as the expert to have it fixed yesterday. It was very hard for me to become a warrant. 3 years building my packet and the first board i went to was a no go. But i wasn't gonna give up and made it 2nd time. Many people can go an entire 20 years and never even meet one. They graduate about 1000 per year so they are not that common. To give you an idea on how much their knowledge is respected i was told by a 1 star. If my entire staff says it will be sunny tomorrow but my chief says it will rain i make everyone bring wet weather gear. Go for it. Well worth it.
Sorry I didn’t see this sooner, but warrant is definitely on my career path. Being here at Irwin is really setting me up for success. I gotta hit that E5(P) ASAP!

Thinking about joining soon, currently 20 years old and in the process of getting army fit for basic training and definitely looking for some guidance on choosing this career path. Have always had a passion for seeing the work our soldiers do. Keep the videos rolling! Thank you for your service
Thank you for watching! It really is a career like no other. It’s more mental than physical as odd as that may seem, but a strong body and strong mind will provide you success in all you do. I wish you the best and hope you make the decision that will provide you peace of mind!
Thanks for the video I am 34 and going to to take the asvab next week hopefully 🤞 can join and pass everything in meps

Trying to go back to the military in a couple years. I’ll be 30 and I’m taking a break from active duty to watch my kids grow up a little more. Looking at other careers that could be long term such as firefighting to stay around them. But the military was the first time I ever loved what I did.
I’m getting there. There are days when I go back and forth with what to do, but I always come back to the stability and security it offers. It’s growing on me the more I realize the amount of opportunities there truly are. Thanks for your comment!

Good video man. It's all about good leadership for success. If you have bad leadership, your time in will be awful.
This video is also very entertaining and informative.
Flying to Moore this week for my 36 (37 in a couple weeks) year old son-in-laws' Infantry graduation. He's the oldest in his company. They call him platoon daddy. Good key points for sure. I'll be 34 this September and doing my asvab right around then. I have a wife and 3 kids I'll be leaving to hold my fort down ages (13, 9, and 2). I'm ready to see where this path takes me and your video is a good added booster. Thanks ; might see you around 🤙
The initial shock of being away from the wife and kids will be harder than anything you do in basic . But let that be your driving force to give it everything you’ve got to make the time away worth it. You’ll come back a stronger husband and father. I wish you all the best!
@@victorgibson8587 most definitely; I appreciate it. My testing is actually getting pushed up to this week. After talking to a recruiter he told me better off knocking it out sooner than later to get an idea of which jobs I'd be able to obtain. I guess depending on the job a good majority are going to want you starting basic around the end of Sept. - Oct.. so he suggested being ahead of the game instead of possibly missing out on an opportunity.
Thanks for the insight
No problem! The least I can do is share my experience
Great video man! Really good advice. I'll be shipping to basic training in September at age 26.
Thank you!🙏🏼 You’ll do great!
I'm talking to a recruiter tomorrow. I had military ambitions since 5th grade living on an Air Force base. I did JROTC and loved it. I gave up on the military because I had asthma. I don't know if that is going to be an issue as I don't use my inhaler any more and I am pretty physical. cross your fingers that a 34 year old like me, can even enlist. I want to serve my country. I want to earn my right to live here. I want the family of brothers and sisters in the armed forces. I want to be a better version of myself. I want the structure, discipline, self respect, recognition, and purpose that I believe the army can help me attain. I'm a hard worker. I love my country. cross your fingers for me please. thank you for your service and for your insight.

I joined the Army in 1990 at the age of 31 years old. The drill instructors abused everyone especially me. Had one that said to me " you don't look like a soldier, act like a soldier or sound like a soldier I'm out to make you drop". He was pissed that I took everything he put out. He didn't even want to shack my hand at graduation. I just held my hand out until he had to. It was a different time then
thanks for your service. How many years did you do and what was your MOS?
I did a three year tour in Germany. Then being out for over three years did the Army reserve for a year. I was a 92A. Quarter Master. They was really pushing for M. I.. I didn't want that
Awwwww crap NTC huh 😂 great video though battle. Keep on feeding them great content man. I went through basic with a guy much older than you right now till this day that is my brother 4 life. Helped me in my toughest days for real.

Hey man really like your video i just turned 30 and im trying to rejoin the military(navy) i did join the army when i was 20 but didnt make it basic training so I thought try again thanks for the tip
I just did the math and my OPFOR uniform is now old enough to enlist in the Army. It's been almost exactly 18 years since I did my last OPFOR rotation before the regiment switched to training for our deployment in 2005. Now I feel old. I think I need a drink.
Congratulations to anyone willing to give it a shot. You’ll do well. Continue to credit your wife and kids for your successes, they sacrifice more.
Im 33 and im going to the recruitment office tomorrow. Im not married or have kids. Been working and working my entire life i feel like i haven't accomplished anything.
Im 32 going to MEPS next week, I hope I get on. I don't have kids and never married and people think im in my early to mid 20's which is funny when my coworkers now talk to me like im a kid. I workout at least 4 days a week, lifting and cardio and eat healthy. I do need a medical waiver so I may or may not be able to join but I am trying. The age thing doesn't bother me considering I have gone through a police academy with 50 year olds and 20 year olds, doing the same thing. Age means nothing, your physical and mental abilities do.
Good man, Gibson. Take care.
Thank you! You too 🙏🏼
I went to basic June 25th, 1998, 20 days after graduating high school. I retired in October 2019. Best choice I ever made. Stick with it put up with the nonsense and enjoy your time. I had more fun than not, traveled the world literally, and I'd do it all over in a heartbeat.
I turn 34 this year and I am thinking about joining the army now.
Hell yeah! We’re here waiting on you!

this helped me out a lot brother , im thinking of joining to serve my country im 32 no criminal record finished school and in peak physical condition
Damn, sounds like you’d be setup for success with anything lol but if the military is on your mind. Think about going the Officer route. They are like the “managers” in the military. Better pay, different point of view of things, but does come with more responsibilities. But you got it, trust me
What's good bro, how you doing? Been a minute since you made a video.
thank you for this video! im working on my paper work to join next year. 33 years old,.

Same here, 33 too, trying to figure it out; many recruiters turned me away due to having a VA disability rating, but never told me until I Googled it on reddit, that if you relinquish your VA rating and can pretty much get a clean bill of health depending on what you were rated for etc., then there is a chance, but recruiters say there is no guarantee and if your disability flares up in OCS or makes you non-deployable then it's game over, and you lose your VA rating at the end of the day. It's a huge risk, but I can't help but feel the nagging urge to get back in. I was AF for 4.5 years and got out due to my performance in aircraft maintenance being subpar... it was toxic to say the least and some said I was set up or whatever. No the Marine Corps recruiter has been talking with me but seems very skeptical that I could actually pass a physical exam by a doctor and all that. Once I told him I have been a clean bill of health for the past 36 months and have been training for the USMC physical fitness test, then he saw I was serious and his tone changed and he said ok, are you ready to do this? Then I started getting nervous because of the aforementioned potential sacrifice of my VA rating required to proceed. Most friends tell me, just keep the disability and find a gov job or let the military past go and start a new life from the bottom up. I've been trying for the past 4.5 years and it has been dismal to say the least. Nothing seems to fire me up like the military. Maybe it is finally time to lay it all on the line and sacrifice it. Essentially it would be the biggest risk I'd take of my life... maybe I'd look back on it and laugh and regret not having gotten rid of it sooner? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!!
@Starbuchs Do what is good for YOU always. It's your life. You can choose anything that is beneficial for you. And if it is good for you, it is good for your family and friends. If you are happy they will be happy too.
I see so many older guys who I’m in with who just do absolutely great and rank up very fast because they’re already mature
This is true for me as well, they understand it’s just work and things could be worse. This life isn’t bad, I don’t miss the civilian world… sometimes lol
Joining active duty army also just waiting for this waiver at 33 I feel like I’ll be the oldest one at bootcamp 😂 this sucks going in old but I can run a lot and I’m pretty active been working in the heat for years so being outside and all dirty don’t scare me lol
Good stuff! You may be one of the few older guys, but you’ll find some comrades that will help you get through it. And you’re going during the best time of year! I wish you all the best, you’ll do great!
I joined late too. The physical aspect wasn't too much of a problem (I myself great at pushups but I'm terrible at running and ruck marching) but now you've got to get through the mental issues, of not just the military in general, but the army specifically. That's why I recommend the Air Force instead because while those issues still exist there, they are not as intense as the Army.
Getting treated like a little a kid because you're junior enlisted as well as being punished for mistakes other junior enlisted, most of whom will be kids in their teens to early twenties, make.
You'll also have to deal with more time away from your family if you have one, because in the Army you will have to go to the woods for weeks at a time, fairly often. More people in the Air Force don't go to the field as much or stay in the field for as long as people in the Army do. Army also has the longest deployments.
If you don't have a family, you'll be in the barracks regardless of branch....but with the Army you'll have to stay in the barracks for possibly many years longer than you'd have to be in the Air Force (E6 with Army vs E4 with Air Force).. Just things you'll have to think about. Good luck. Hopefully if you do join the Army you get a decent MOS.
@@victorgibson8587 shit if I can can get this consult for a waiver I will feel like meps don’t wanna give it to me I might be too old maybe that’s why they’re in no rush to process my waiver
May i asked what the waiver is for? I have had a heart condition in the past and the recruiter said i would have to get a good bill of health before i could enlist. Also im hesitant because i would have to take the vaccine which i have been against since day 1
@@Lserra1433 hey hope all is well. Meps can be a pain in A sometimes. But I will say October is the end of the fiscal year for the Army so they could be trying to tie up loose ends to finish out the year. But don’t be surprised if things start to move really fast when that waiver comes through. Take care and I hope things go well
