  • Cyclefit's founders Jules and Phil examine two pro cyclists in the Giro d' Italia who have very contrasting leg extensions. Jules and Phil have worked with many professional cyclists.
    How have they come to ride in this position and are they performing optimally?

    This provides even more evidence for the 'work it out yourself' method of bikefit.

    Great content by the way - there’s so many people chucking out content on bike fitting these days, so it’s good to see stuff from real experts such as yourselves

    From my observations on the video. The blue guy on the rear could possibly; 1. Going forward to the saddle to incorporate his Glutes more while drafting and giving the hamstring a fair recovery from previous efforts, 2. His Saddle fore & aft position isn’t complimenting the Cleat Placement could have the cleat placed far more forwards on the shoe for the toe dipping.

    The Red Guy in the front could possibly have; 1. A high saddle position, 2. Cleat placement is on the rear-end near the midfoot placement for stability (hence the leg reach is shortened and needs to lower the saddle), 3. The saddle tip of the nose is level or tilted down a bit, hence the rider is sliding forwards.

    you've got to take into account that some riders may not be nearly as flexible as other riders. or maybe way more flexible. as a rider that's not very flexible myself, alot of the ideal angles aren't something i can easily achieve. as long as i feel good smooth power going through the downstroke, and a very slight stretch in the leg, i know it's going well.

    This was awesome! I hope to see more of that in the future. You touch upon, but can I put in a petition for doing a video on muscle recruitment/activation when pedaling (I don't want to call it pedaling technique)? I have to admit that its of personal interest, I seem to have a hard time with hip extension and pushing down on the pedals and not pulling up too much. I think I'm getting some anterior knee pain from the pulling up.
    Regarding Sagan, his right hip is "off". He has physio working for him fulltime to keep him on the bike. He more or less says himself that if he didn't have him, he would not be able to ride nearly as much.

    Thanks guys - 2 top like fitters and anytime I'm put within their specs. I get lower right back pain but I had an x-ray and I have a femur shorter on the right side. I have custom-made Orthotics and I have to have the suit lower than specs say I should that's the only way I can put out power. I think all my life my body adapted to the shorter femur since I was born with it and now I'm older my body want adjust. I'm very competitive and I run also Marathons

    I am alsp experiencing the same as the rider in red is having on the clip. I did correct the saddle tilt by tilting the tip of the nose upwards by 2 degrees more from the “level” and moving the Hoods upwards towards the flats of the drop bar. I hope I hear from you guys about my insights as well. Great video and observations for a static bike fit from the two pros.

    Yep. Do bike fitting myself and agree with your comments. Interesting ,I have noticed also that entire teams seem to share bike fit issues,for example last year AG2R team appeared to all be sitting 10-20 mm too low!

    the idea knee l angle at full extension should be between 145- 155 degrees, for optimal power and to avoid knee problems.. there have been several studies on that.. so the seat height of the first rider is perfect not wrong at all

    Curious, does it seem backwards the way each of their ankles are angled? Wouldn't the one who is over extending generally also toe down more and vice versa for the one under extending? It seems like both of them are exaggerating their extension issues with how they are using their ankles...

    Rider 2 too small a frame for sure. He looks a far larger rider than rider in red. Would to reduce saddle bar drop on rider two if on a bike size up and increased leg extension as he has to ride elbows out due to his closed off hip and boxed torso?

  • @Lemond75
    @Lemond75 3 года назад +1

    Re the guy in green, aside from his bike being too small in terms of reach, what do you think about the bar height? What are your thoughts on the saddle to bar drop that many riders employ these days, compared to the 80’s and 90’s where riders were still able to ride with a very flat back, albeit riding in the drops with significant elbow flexion (perhaps relates to one of your blog posts about modern frame geometries?). Many thanks.

    • @cyclefituk2622
      @cyclefituk2622  3 года назад +3

      The positions from the eighties and nineties set the saddle further back so the only way to keep the hip angle open (where possible) was to keep the bars higher. Now that some riders employ a more forward position they can ride with a lower bar as they tip forward, like in a Tri position, it keeps the hip angle open and engages the glutes. However, the current trend now is improved aerodynamics at the expense of good posture and bike handling and high saddle pressure on the perinium. I should also mention that this rider has a low bar drop but his head is sticking up in the wind and costing him 30 watts, it doesn't always work.

    First chap has incredibly flexible hamstrings, second chap has a bike too small, and has to reduce saddle height to feel comfy reaching bars.

    Pro cyclists tends to use smaller bike frame and get very very long stem !! We see stems long 120 + !! My question is why ?? Bike weight saving maybe ?? 🤔

    • @pjetrs

      smaller bike means shorter wheel base, so you'll be more agile. I think thats the main reason ?
