@@electricgiblets not really. Everyone liked Jarvis. Suede and blur hated each other pre-oasis. That was the battle. Jarvis was like the referee that everyone respected.
I love the ordinariness of Pulp songs - they have such a lovely blend of humour and pathos, and always very grounded in a recognisable northern working class culture
Same as what Tom Waits does in depicting America's forgotten and down-trodden in a lot of his songs. Makes the bleak, mundane and everyday glisten with appeal and romanticism and a cloud of sadness hanging over it all.
Fun fact, this song is based on a True stories, Jarvis and Deborah stayed friends until Deborah's sad death. Jarvis even sang this song at Deborah's wedding.
Pulp are a brilliant band. Jarvis Cocker writes lyrics that are like little kitchen sink dramas. Stories of the lives of regular British people told with a little bit of humor and a lot of sympathy. He's a tall gangly awkward regular bloke and we loved him for it. Disco 2000 and common people were their biggest hits but standouts include Babies, Underwear, Sorted for Es and Wizz, This is hardcore and something changed. Also Jarvis mooned Michael Jackson live on stage at the Brit awards show for which we loved him even more.
So many people suggested this song in the comments on Common People. It's definitely one to react to, as you say, with the lyrics! Also, Caught By The Fuzz by Supergrass.
That song always gets me, as I grew up with it, and come the year 2000 I too would be "grown up", and now it's 21 years past that...hell, we're all getting old boys!
Probably elsewhere in the comments, but I can't be arsed looking....wood chip was a type of very cheap wallpaper, which literally had small chips of wood in it to give it texture. My mum used to tell me off for picking the chips out of it. I suspect I wasn't alone.
The album this song is from is called "Different Class" and there are some fantastic songs on there. I think you've already reacted to Common People (also from this album) One of my favourites from the album and (in my opinion) one of their darkest is "I Spy". That's got some lyrics that'll get you thinking! Or even "Pencil Skirt", which Jarvis Cocker has himself described as "a dirty little number" :-D
Pulp recommendations apart from the one's you've done already: Do You Remember The First Time?, Lipgloss, Babies, Mis-Shapes, I Spy, Live Bed Show, Underwear and This Is Hardcore
'A Little Soul' is just gorgeous. Probably Jarvis's least arch, lyrically. Please give it a listen, even if it isn't a recorded reaction one. Your souls will be enriched, fittingly, given the song title.
One fact you might find fascinating - this is song from 1995. Pulp got tohether in 1978! That's 17 years between them starting playing and when he wrote these lyrics. I don't know how old he was when they started (touch of mystery) but right now I'm probably at that age when he wrote the lyrics... Even that I'm not from England or close to anything I could call common people, this song just hurts bulls eye. 17 years. They are still around even now, planning 2023 reunion, and "even if it was the only thing they are known for," they still get singalong of tens of thousands people, because "it's a good song"... 27 years later.
Much of the lyrical content of Jarvis Cocker songs is based on his own personal experiences. 'Deborah' in 'Disco 2000' actually existed, and their respective mothers had been friends since the maternity hospital. Jarvis has admitted though, that he and Deborah were actually born a few hours apart on the same day, but that "within an hour of each other" scanned much better as a lyric. (Poetic licence, anyone?)
Jarvis is great at creating visions from our teenage /early adult times. I don't know if Jarvis still buys his clothes from charity shops but he used to
I was as their concert last night in home city of Sheffield England. This was their 2nd song on the list and everyone in the arena got on their feet (around 10k) and was singing along to the song and common people was towards the end those two songs (also mid-shapes) they send a electrifying vibes though the arena everyone singing to every word what a concert what a night have three gigs left this tour but definitely a group to see live
I love this song, talking about a girl you grew up with and fancied but nothing happened between you. We all have as story like that. Like on the Wonder Years.
Our version of friends was 'coupling' and the theme tune was Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps by Doris Day but i get you. Anyway, loads of suggestions here for their stuff. I think Something Changed and misshapes are my faves of the entry level stuff of theirs.
Coupling was miles better than Friends. Funnier and went far deeper into the topic of adult relationships. Were Friends is a superficial comedy with a story-telling background but always fishing for cheap thrill laughs, Coupling on the other hand is comedy with a deeper meaning that isn't afraid to let the real belly-laughs build up through an intricate story line. For anyone looking it up, I should note that there is a failed US version of Coupling as well. Avoid that at all cost.
I love this song - i love the nostalgia of growing up with folk and seeing how diffierent we all become. Yes, it says 'lets all meet up in the year 2000, wont it be strange when we're all fully grown' - which is funny because i was closer to being the 'baby' in the story than being 'fully grown' back then - i was 5 for most of 2000, 6 towards the end. But its still has the warm melancholy . . . A bittersweet, cynical nostalgia that Pulp do so well.

Love a bit of Pulp, fun nostalgia. Went digging around in my music brain and came up with 3 other bands who fit into this category of story telling, (I'm sure there's many more but these 3 came to mind nostalgically) Squeeze (70's, 80's) 'Cool For Cats' or 'Up The Junction' Our national treasure Jools Holland was in this band. Great video. This is probably sacrilege to say-- but I've always preferred Disco 2000 to Common People (though there's little in it). Babies is a belter as well. Somebody once described Jarvis Cocker as the missing between Mick Jagger and Alan Bennett.
I remember being 21 in December before the Millennium. I was drunk and hungover from my birthday party to Xmas to New Year. Party Animal. Anyway, I recall singing this in the city centre when they let the fireworks off for Hogmanay swinging my platforms around my head as my mates watched me on top of a statue. Then we went clubbing. Those were the days my friend. Don't know how I survived the 90s.
God, this song is so epic...in a tragic, English way. Wonderful times in the UK. 93 to 96. I won't ever get sick of this record.... I feel the US missed out on so much brilliant BritPop of that time.
